Cover Story

Humane Society of Alamance County WOOFSTOCK 2012

O

n October 6th from Noon to 5 PM, the Humane Society of Alamance County (HSAC) will host Woofstock 2012, featuring the 14th annual Tour de Tailwaggers mass dog walk at Burlington City Park Amphitheater. It will be a day for music, dogs, peace, love and harmonies.

8

Woofstock attendees are encouraged to get out their tasseled jackets, beads, headbands, peace signs and hippie wigs (all optional, of course!), and bring along dogs, children, grandparents and lawn chairs for this family event. What could be better than the biggest dog event of the year combined with mindblowing music and awesome attractions? Here is a rundown of the exciting music, events and attractions for Woofstock 2012. Graymatter will perform acoustic renditions of 60s and 70s rock and folk classics with a generous dose of multi-part harmonies. Members: Barry Gray, Brad Gray, Bev Gray Gude and Dave Gude have been playing acoustic guitars and harmonizing together for more than 30 years. The family group will expand to include younger generation guest stars Chloe Gray Gude on violin and Derek Gray Gude on accordion. (www.facebook.com/graymatternc) The Sticky Wickets are lead by Woofstock Master of Ceremonies, Will Baker. The band was formed “out of a need for humanity to have a group of men to provide entertainment, and great music for the world.” It’s a tough job, but they have been successful thus far in their efforts, with their special blend of good humor and high spirits. Members: Will Baker - Guitar and vocals, Dan Chegash - drums, Jeff

September 2012 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

Taylor - Bass and vocals, Terry Hackett Harmonica. (www.reverbnation.com/thestickywickets) More musical acts are expected. You can stay tuned to www.hsaconline.org and also www.facebook.com/hsac.for the final line-up. Special Attractions include the following... “Blessing of the Hounds” will kick off Tour de Tailwaggers XIV. Tour de Tailwaggers XIV mass dog walk takes you along beautiful shaded paths and over scenic bridges throughout Burlington City Park. Children and adults can all make a difference for the animals. Prizes will be offered for best fundraisers, child and adult, plus free event tee-shirts for everyone who raises $25.00 or more. A Walker Form is available at www.hsaconline.org. The Dog Costume Contest is always fabulously fun and a sight to behold. Animal Rescue Groups including Biscuit Foundation, 4 Seasons Boxer Rescue, Carolina Care Bullies, Burlington Pet Adoption Center, Alamance Kennel Club, NC Greyhound Rescue, and Chatham Animal Rescue and Education will bring their highly adoptable animals and information about their organizations. A Rabies/Microchip Clinic will be provided by Alamance Veterinary Hospital (limited hours, final schedule to be announced at www.hsaconline.org). Food and Beverage Vendors will offer delicious and thirst quenching treats. Games and Crafts will include a popular tee-shirt tie-dye booth, Putts for Mutts, facepainting, a photo booth and the irresistible

Spin-to-Win Wheel Game for fabulous prizes. Every spin is a win. All of this happy activity will help to combat a very serious problem. Pet overpopulation is a devastating fact of life in Alamance County, as it is across our nation. To combat this tragic situation, friends and neighbors will join together for a few hours filled with music, fun and a relaxing stroll through the park with their dogs to support the good works of the Humane Society of Alamance County. Woofstock 2012 is free and open to the general public, and bringing a dog is entirely optional. But the 14th annual Tour de Tailwaggers dog walk is an important part in the event, allowing concerned citizens and animal lovers, young and old alike, to show their love and active support for local animals and the families that care for them. Participants will bring their dogs, ranging from Toy breeds to Giant breeds, and will be raising awareness and funds to change the lives of Alamance County animals. Funds and proceeds of the Woofstock event will benefit the overall work and support the programs of the Humane Society of Alamance County -- working to help those in need through low-cost spay/neuter, foster/ rescue, and humane education. Remember that this is local people helping local animals, and 100% percent of funds raised will help HSAC in their important work right in Alamance County. The Humane Society of Alamance County is making a difference, whether it’s responding to a family needing emergency pet food assistance, giving information and referral services to someone just moving to the area or even providing important spay/neuter surgeries to stop out-of-control

breeding, which will help decrease the number of animals being killed at the city shelter. Or services sometimes include rescuing an abandoned animal or one that has lost its home due to an owner’s illness, death or loss of job or home. To participate in the walk itself, simply find the Walker Form at www.hsaconline.org, collect donations from friends, family members and other sponsors and bring your form and funds raised to the registration table at Woofstock at 12:00 Noon on October 6th at Burlington City Park Amphitheater. The Humane Society of Alamance County has offered its low-cost spay/neuter program to local residents for over a decade. HSAC operates independently, without a penny of tax money, thanks to generous contributors and volunteers. HSAC facilitates spay and neuter surgeries through partnerships with the majority of Alamance County’s veterinarians and veterinary hospitals. Their spay/neuter packages can include rabies vaccine, other important vaccinations, surgical pain medication, fecal testing, dewormer and flea treatment, all at no additional cost. Since 2001, HSAC has operated a foster/ rescue program. The numbers of animals they can save depends on funds they have available to cover the cost of rescue as well as volunteers willing to act as foster parents until permanent homes can be found. HSAC is very fortunate to house some of their foster cats and kittens in cubbies at the PetSmart Adoption Center located on University Drive in Burlington. PetSmart has been a valuable partner to HSAC.

Education is a key effort of HSAC. They strive to increase public awareness of pet owners’ responsibilities through their Companion Quarterly newsletter, Quick Bark, email updates, the HSAC Facebook page, www.facebook.com/hsac.page and information booths at public events. They also offer a slideshow presentation about HSAC to civic groups. Finally, volunteer Humane Educators conduct programs for school, church, scout and other children’s groups teaching young people about responsible pet care. HSAC invites everyone to join them for this really great community event. Woofstock 2012 is an opportunity for everyone to show that they really care about fighting pet over-population and contributing to the vital programs for which the Humane Society of Alamance County has been known for over 40 years. You can contact the Humane Society of Alamance County at 336-438-2023 or visit them online at www.hsaconline.org and at www.facebook.com/hsac.page to learn more.

Faline.

I was found in a car dealership parking lot. A nice guy took me to an HSAC volunteer and they learned I’d already been spayed. See, I was someone’s special baby at one time. They must have moved on because I ended up scrounging for food and a warm place to stay. They also tested me and I was positive for FIV. It is not contagious to humans, nor to other cats unless an infected cat is a biter. I am very gentle and sweet. I will need to be an indoor kitty for the rest of my life, just to make sure another mean or sick cat does not pick on me and compromise my health, but I am happy as a clam indoors. And if you have a kitty who is FIV+, I would make a great companion to him or her! Call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net to adopt me.

Bonnie.

Looking for a family seeking a fun and friendly challenge. I am house-broken and do my business outdoors, never inside. I adore being outside in a large fenced-in yard. Currently, I share the dog lot with other dogs but it took me a little while to adjust to the company. It’s ok for now...but at first it was a little overwhelming if you want to be top dog, or maybe share the glory with one other dog. Some of my passions are hiking, eating and lounging in the yard. I’m 8 years old and I love kids, although smaller ones sometimes get knocked over by my affection. Call 336-438-2023 and leave a message or email hsac@netpath.net to find out more about me. n

Q A

Attack of the FLEAS!!!

We treat our dog with flea control meds during the warm months, but what about winter? Are fleas dangerous? As a veterinarian in North Carolina, I see my share of fleas in practice. Some dogs and cats can have a “flea circus” living on them and appear perfectly unshaken, while others suffer incredible allergic reactions and severe illness, even death in some cases. If you want to beat fleas, then you have to understand the flea and their life cycle. Next, you have to treat your animal with a safe and effective product that fits your pet’s lifestyle.

Fleas are responsible for several diseases that make our animals sick and can also make us sick. Pet allergic reactions and skin infections from flea bites are very common and often require multiple medications to treat and relieve the inflammation and infection. Another disease is flea bite anemia. This happens when a pet has so many bites from these blood suckers that it causes their red blood cell count to be low, requiring supportive care and a possible blood transfusion. Feline Infectious Anemia is caused by a life threatening blood parasite carried by fleas. Tapeworm infections are most commonly caused by fleas and although they typically cause little or no harm to your pets, they are considered a possible threat to humans. Another human disease linked to fleas is Cat Scratch Fever (Bartonellosis), where the cat does not become ill, but people can become very sick. The take home message is simple, fleas can cause serious disease and death, and this can be avoided by prevention.

Fleas are very adaptive, their life cycle is active throughout the year. A common misconception I hear from people is that fleas “die off ” in the winter. Not true, especially in North Carolina! While

the temperature outside does determine how fast the fleas go through their life cycle, it does not stop the life cycle. So what does that mean for pet owners? Simple, attack fleas when they are at their lowest numbers in the cooler months and not have nearly the struggle in the warmer months. This is why flea prevention should be given year round, even if your pet is an indoor only pet. Prevention is important. The market is flooded with topical flea products, some are good and others not. When you are trying to decide what to put on your pet, listen to your veterinarian and decide together what will be the safest product for your pet. And while not all over the counter products are bad, I’ve seen some awful reactions, some because the wrong product was applied and others because the animal was sensitive to one or more of the ingredients. When choosing a flea product, remember, you do often get what you pay for and if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is not true. Don’t be afraid to ask your veterinarian what they use on their own pets. I use Parastar™Plus and Sentinel® for my dogs and Revolution® and Program® injectable for my cats. These products work great for my household, but I sometimes recommend different products for my patients based on the pet’s lifestyle and situation. Frontline® was the mainstay number one prevention for a long time, then came Frontline® Plus and now everyone, it seems, claims to have a comparable product. Well, the truth is that there are products available that seem to work faster and more effective than Frontline, but there are many that don’t seem to be able to live up to their claims. Hang in there, flea control is possible, but it will take persistence and patience.

Ciera and Cece, two sweet little sisters that are up for adoption at AARF. They are ten weeks old as of August 22nd, and love to play with toys and each other. We believe they are Border Collie mixes and both are a little shy, but warm up quickly. Both little girls play hard and nap hard, typical puppies. is Manny and my foster mom says I am quite the man. I am a tiger striped kitty with beautiful white markings on my face, chest, and all four feet. I am quite the outgoing kitty with an adorable personality. I am confident and I am not afraid of anything. I have been around children and dogs. I love to play with toys, run, jump, and climb my cat tree. My siblings have already found their forever home and I hope to have mine soon.

(aka Chris Paul) was found on the WFU campus. He’s about the cutest brown tabby we’ve seen at AARF and has a personality to match. Here’s what he has to say: “I am the biggest of the Wake Forest kittens, but my sisters run all over me. I love to be snuggled but wrestling is the most fun ever! Jingle balls are fun too when my foster mom throws them for me. I can be a little pushy when I want something but I am so cute I can get away with it.”

Frehley

Jagger. The Rolling

is not the party cat that his namesake, Ace Frehley of the band KISS, was. This little guy is much more mellow. Not that Frehley doesn’t like to play with his brothers, Jagger and Bowie. He sure does. He also loves his kitty toys and batting around a ball of paper, too. But, you just might find Frehley sitting or laying somewhere watching the antics of his 2 siblings, just as much as you might find him joining in. Frehley was born 5/1/12 and would do well in a home with another easy-going cat or as a single cat just chilling out with his family. Won’t you come by and see this handsome fellow next time he is at the adoption center.

Stones sang “...You can’t always get what you want, But if you try sometimes well you just might find... You get what you need..”. This strikingly handsome little guy thinks once you meet him, you will be ready to make this song come true. Jagger, born 5/1/12, loves to play with his brothers, Bowie and Frehley. They spend their time enjoying all of the great kitty toys in their foster home. When Jagger is not having a blast with his brothers or his new toys, he can be found lounging in the window seat watching all of the interesting things in the yard. Help Jagger make these lyrics a reality for him and you might find you get what you really need too...a really cool kitty to call your very own!

Minnie

is a sweet, 2 year old Chihuahua/ Terrier mix who is ready to move in with someone who will promise to love her forever. She weighs 8 lbs., but could stand to put on a couple more pounds. She is crate trained, spayed, and up-to-date on her vaccinations. Because of her background, Minnie is having to learn to walk on a leash. Other than that, she has adapted quickly to her foster home. She is “low maintenance,” loves to be loved, and has the waggingest tail in town. Call ARFP at 574-9600 if you are interested in adopting Minnie. n

Dupree.

Tanner

was also born sometime in May 2012. She is a calm (relatively speaking) kitten that is quick to break out in a purr. She puts up with her foster mate Rico’s “attacks”, but will put him in his place when she has had enough of his silliness. Please call ARFP at 574-9600 if you are interested in adopting Tanner. n

Griffin.

Meet Dupree! What a sweet boy he is! Dupree and his siblings were rescued after being abandoned in High Point. Now he enjoys the comforts of his foster home and lots of play time with his siblings. He is a Boxer mix and was born on 6/18/12. Call us to learn more about making Dupree part of your family.

Born on May 15, 2012, this little girl is a small package of everything FUN. Griffin loves to play with other dogs and enjoys any toy that comes her way. Do you have room for a bundle of sugar, spice and everything nice? Griffin is up-to-date on shots and will be spayed soon. Griffin would love to find a place in your heart and home.

Jack.

Coco

When Jack was initially brought to our clinic to be neutered, it appeared that he only had one eye and was about 3 months old. It turned out that he was older, but just extremely tiny for his age. His eye was damaged from an upper respiratory infection and when given a choice of leaving his eye as is or having it removed and the eye socket closed, we ultimately chose to leave his eye alone. Little Jack has no problems with his eye as it is and he is very happy, doing all of the things a kitty loves to do. Just having turned a year old, Jack is very playful and affectionate and loves to spend time with his foster family, just hanging out in their sunroom.

has just turned a year old this month. She is an adorable, affectionate and loving girl and is happiest when receiving lots of attention from her foster family or visitors. She is a talkative kitty and has the most endearing habit of sitting up and pawing at the air with both front feet. She is a very unusual kitty and promises to keep her new family members entertained.

Fern will purr and make biscuits all day, as long as you give her lots of attention. She enjoys having her beautiful flowing coat combed every day. Fern would do well in a quiet household where she would be the “Queen” and the center of attention. Call 378-0878 if you are interested in giving Fern a loving home. n

Java is a very sweet boy who is outgoing and playful. He just had his first birthday this summer. His antics are loads of fun for anyone watching him. Tinkerbelle

white cat with a black tail and the most strikingly gorgeous golden eyes. He and his siblings were rescued at 5 weeks of age from a restaurant parking lot. He is a very sweet boy who loves to play and when he is tired, he will jump up in your lap and purr himself to sleep. He has a wonderful PURRsonality and will not hesitate to tell you when he wants something, usually something to eat. Raja would do well in a home where there are not a lot of other cats so that he can get all the attention.

is a beautiful 6-yearold torbie and white cat with expressive green eyes that are enhanced by her gorgeous color pattern. is a solid grey fuzz ball, with butter cream tips at each end. She has a few beige toes, a streak on her nose, and a spot at the very tip of her tail. She is the calmest kitten of the bunch, but still loves to wrestle and play with all her foster brothers and sisters, especially Tiger Lily. She may be small, but she is big at heart!

is such a mischief maker! Her silly antics as she plays are quite entertaining—you will truly laugh out loud (LOL). She loves her sister, Tippy Toes, and when her foster momma tries to make the bed, both kitties are right there to help her! Be careful though! RED DOG FARM ANIMAL RESCUE NETWORK www.reddogfarm.com

Harrison

Dutchess is an 8 year

came to Red Dog Farm after his owners discovered that they were allergic to him. He is a cute little guy who LOVES his wheel. Like a typical hamster, he spends his days sleeping or lounging about his home and his evenings playing and interacting. Harrison also enjoys his food, treats, and chew toys. Hamsters make excellent pets for folks of all ages but do best with children who either just like to watch or can handle them gently with adult supervision.

old Tennessee Walking Horse mare who came to us as a referral from animal control. She is a sweet, social girl who loves human affection. For someone with the experience to work with her, she will make an absolutely fabulous horse. Our veterinarian examined Dutchess, gave her all of her vaccines, floated her teeth and gave her a clean bill of health. She has also had her feet trimmed. One of our volunteers test rode Dutchess and though she was a good girl, it was obvious that she was nervous. So, he will be working on ground work with her for now to develop more confidence before we restart her under saddle. She is a very sweet, social girl.

If you are interested in adopting Harrison, please go online and visit www.reddogfarm.com. n

Luke

Boone

came to Red Dog Farm after being found as a stray. He is a very sweet puppy who aims to please but is still working on his basic manners. He is learning to sit, stay, and come. He is housebroken and crate trained. Luke gets along with everyone he meets, including dogs, kids, and cats. We are still getting to know him a little since he just came to us. However, he has been vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped so he is ready to start meeting potential adopters today. In fact, he is already packing his bags and is really ready to go to his new home.

came to Red Dog Farm after his owners could no longer keep him. He is a typical husky in that he loves to be with his people or dog pack. He has quite a bit of energy and is always up for a walk. However, a good cuddle nap with you works too. Like other huskies, he does “talk” to you simply because he wants to tell you about his day. He would do best in a family that enjoys good long walks and can make sure he gets enough exercise. Boone is a giant love bug and is looking for his forever home. Boone is up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered, and microchipped so he is ready to go home today!

Fritz

Peter Pan is a hand-

came to Red Dog Farm after jumping onto the wheel well of a stopped car in the middle of an intersection. Fortunately for him, a nice lady was able to get him out from the car and take him home until he was able to come to us. Fritz is a very well-mannered kitten and has a fantastic personality. He was bound and determined from the get go, to go home with someone and be their forever kitty. Fritz gets along with everyone he meets, loves the dogs in his foster home, and enjoys other feline friends as well. You couldn’t ask for a more perfect gentleman. He has received his first two rounds of vaccines and has been microchipped and neutered.

some 10 week old kitten that was found abandoned on the side of the road with his two sisters. Thanks to a Good Samaritan they all made it to a local vet’s office and eventually to Red Dog Farm. When they originally came to us, they were just 3 weeks old and still needed to be bottle fed. Peter gets along with everyone he meets and loves other animals. He has received his first two rounds of vaccines and has been microchipped and neutered. Peter is the last of his litter to be adopted but this sweetheart is adorable and won’t be around much longer.

Healing with Touch By Beth Blair, LMBT

A dog uses seventeen muscles to move an ear! Dogs work and play hard! Navigating life on all fours creates muscle tension in different places. Most humans may know one of the many benefits of massage is relaxation. What is less obvious is that the body cannot heal in a stressed state and will naturally heal when in a relaxed state. This is true for all living things. Whether seeking healing or improving wellness, massage therapy for dogs is amazing. Massage will release muscle tension, reduce adhesions and scar tissue. It also reduces anxiety and nervousness. From the Beth is dedicated to Wellness wellness perspecfor humans and canines!

tive, massage treats the whole being, canine or human. That is physical, mental, spiritual and social. I decided to add canine massage to my practice after my neighbor inquired about massage for her dog, Fawn. You may laugh, but what Fawn did was jump into my lap to get some TLC. Like many Dachshunds, Fawn, suffered from back pain. My TLC sessions and trained hands identified places of muscle tension and spasms. With massage therapy, the symptoms were reduced and Fawn had greater mobility. Massage also supported Fawn when she suffered the loss of Deacon another Dachshund. Massage can calm the anxious pup. I recently met Abby at the local shelter. She was losing her hair and drooling excessively from stress. I offered her a loving touch with stroking to relax the head and neck. Abby calmed down! With regular massage, Abby’s anxiety can be reduced and her beautiful personality can shine through.

Myo anticipating his next massage!

Massage has many benefits for humans and canines. Offering massage to your canine companion is a wonderful way to give back for the unconditional love the dog gives you and it supports the overall wellness of the dog: mind, body and spirit. by Donna Gardner, Feral Cat Assistance Program o we are all superstitious, right? Maybe a little? I probably jumped over a crack or two in my day to make sure my mom didn’t get a broken back. No harm, no foul, right? But let’s talk about a little superstition that actually does cause harm. Specifically, the one about black cats being

bad luck. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), 70 percent of the cats who enter shelters nationwide are euthanized. Unfortunately, due to myths and other factors, the number of black cats that are euthanized can be twice that of tabby cats according to a 2002 study done by The Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science. Wow. Looks like that superstition really cuts deep. Let’s take a moment to look at the facts. It is possible these may just convince you to abandon your myths and superstitions! First, the bad luck myth is not a worldwide belief. In the UK black cats are actually considered GOOD luck, and in Scotland finding a black cat on your doorstep indicates prosperity is heading your way. Well that might be reason enough right there to change your mind. Still need more? How about the fact that in all the surveys of cat owners, black cats consistently come up as the friendliest, most loyal and laid back cats of any color cat. Black is also the most prevalent color of cat, and researchers have been asking “Why?” In attempting to answer that question, they

have identified that the gene for black fur may actually also be a gene that fights infectious diseases more readily, thus leading to a higher survival rate in the wild. So, let’s sum it up. Black cat equals friendly, laid back, loyal and healthy. Now what more could one want? Still need more? No worries, below is the comprehensive list of why a black cat is the perfect accessory. Pick one up today at your local rescue or animal shelter. Your black cat will thank you forever! Reasons to own a black cat: 1) I mean, everyone needs a little black dress or tuxedo and a cat to match! 2) They go with any décor. 3) Toss your lint brush, no light colored hairs on those black pants. 4) Holding a black cat will make you appear slimmer. 5) How else can you own a mini Carolina Panther’s mascot? 6) When the room is dark you won’t even notice they are there. 7) To go with Scotland-who doesn’t want a chance at some prosperity? So go forth and be crazy. Step on those cracks, open an umbrella in the house, walk under a ladder and run right down to your local rescue or shelter and adopt a black cat. Your friends and neighbors may end up being amazed at your good luck. And your shelter employee or rescue worker might just hug you, so be ready!

Nika is house trained, crate trained and although she doesn’t seem to know much else, she is German Shepherd Rescue & Adoptions very food motivated and should be a quick learner. She is not good with cats, seems to be a little fearful of other dogs and has not been around kids. Nika is playful, loves toys, very people oriented and is full of love to share with some lucky family. Visit www.gsdrescue.org for more information. n

Training Your Pet

Learning to Focus by Pat Muhammad, Carolina Dog Training Club

A

s a dog trainer at Carolina Dog Training Club (CDTC), I have heard the phrase, “My dog always does this at home,” thousands of times, but at home it is just you and your dog in your normal surroundings. The benefits of training classes is that your dog will be in a group with other dogs and because dogs are social animals, they can learn from each other. In class, your dog must learn to pay attention to you (focus) in a group situation which includes distractions of other dog’s scents, barking and even treats or toys. The fact that your dog pays attention to you with all these distractions can give you a real feeling of accomplishment. We help you achieve this by using a command to help your dog focus on you. We provide distractions, as well as how to accomplish this feat with your dog. Having your dog focus on you when you are away from home can be very important. Consider the trip to the dog park when your dog is much more interested in another dog than he is in you. By giving your dog the command to focus on you, you might be able to eliminate a confrontation. If your dog happens to get loose, your dog will know the command for focus and this might keep him from getting run over. In a class, you have the support of fellow classmates who are doing the same exercises that you and your dog are. In a class, you don’t feel like you or your dog stand out with any problems since others have some of the same issues. Not only do you learn how to take care of your problems, but you’ll also hear explanations on how to handle other problems that people experience with their own dogs. A class also gives you and your dog a chance to be around all types of dogs, large and small. Originally, CDTC classes were oriented toward individuals wanting to show their dogs

38

in Obedience trials, but in the past few years our classes have moved more toward the “everyday” or “family” dog. We want our dog owners to learn what is necessary to co-exist with their dog so that both the dog and the owner are happy. We always hope that our students will go on to compete, but are happy with whatever they decide. Our main objective is to have a happy, well-trained dog. Dog obedience is a team sport, the team being you and your dog. Obedience exercises are a great way to spend time with your dog and get a real feeling of accomplishment as you bond with your dog. We as a Club are always as excited as the owners when our “four-legged” students graduate along with their “two-legged” owners. Your dog will always be your best friend and favorite teammate. Following are a few of the classes that we offer: Our Puppy classes are designed to learn appropriate puppy socialization while also covering the basic obedience commands. The Beginner I classes are for older puppies and dogs that have not had prior training. This class focuses on building the bond between owner and dog by learning how to get and keep your dog’s focus, as well as a series of obedience commands. Manners class is for dogs that may need a bit more individual attention and a lower stress environment in order to forge the owner/dog bond. This is a wonderful course for people who have acquired an older dog from a rescue or shelter and are having difficulty gaining their new addition’s trust and building a bond. It is also good for owners that are having some mild behavioral issues such as a nervous or shy dog. The Beginner II class is a continuation of the basic obedience skills learned in

September 2012 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

Beginner I class. It is always fun to return to the Beginner II class and see your fellow classmates from Beginner I. The Canine Good Citizen class is designed to cover the exercises required for the AKC Canine Good Citizens certification. This class also addresses situations we run into in everyday life, such as meeting another person and their dog in the park and what to do in that situation, or taking your dog to be groomed or to the veterinarian without them being anxious. Rally class is an introduction to AKC Rally obedience where a handler reads signs set out at different places around the ring and shows their dog what to do at each sign. We also offer advanced classes oriented toward qualifying in different areas of AKC obedience trials. CDTC has been in existence for over 75 years. We have worked with all types of breeds including pure breeds and rescues in all sizes and ages. We have had thousands of individuals and dogs participate in our classes. CDTC is an AKC affiliated club and holds a two day trial in March each year. We also offer a fun match each year, which allows dog handlers the chance to practice with their dogs as if they were at a real Obedience or Rally trial. CDTC offers classes four times a year. Our next session begins on October 2, 2012. Applications are currently being accepted. You can obtain an application, as well as additional class and event information at our website, www.carolinadogtrainingclub.com. We look forward to seeing you in one of our upcoming classes.
