Some exciting news for this month, we want to welcome Alamance County into our publication! Three wonderful organizations are adding animals to this issue, and we hope to add even more in the coming months. Our goal is to be truly a regional magazine and offer space to anyone who needs it. We all have a lot to be thankful for every day, but the focus is especially intense during the month of November. Forsyth Humane Society On Track for the Future By Mark Uren

ew people know the history of the Forsyth Humane Society (FHS). FHS exists because of the love Dee Dee & Lydia Schouler had for their dog. D.D. Schouler was a wealthy merchant who owned a department store on Liberty Street. Mr Schouler loved animals, particularly dogs. He had a dog that he trained to go the corner and wait for the streetcar. When the car came, he hopped aboard and gave the motorman a nickel that he held in his mouth. The dog would then ride to the square where Schouler’s store was located. In addition to the nickel, the dog would also carry Schouler’s lunch. In 1908, the street car-riding dog died. A friend of the family decided to give the

grief-stricken couple another dog. True animal lovers, the Schoulers could not resist feeding and housing any stray that came their way. In 1910 D.D. Schouler died and in 1926 Lydia Schouler died. She left a handwritten will and left her grandmother’s antique clock to the friend who gave them their dog after they lost their streetcar friend and instructions to establish the D.D. Schouler Fund for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals administered by the Winston-Salem Foundation. Since 1939 money from this fund has gone to support FHS and in 1941 FHS was chartered and has worked out of several locations. The grand opening for the current location at 61 Miller Street was celebrated on May 7, 1998. In 2003, a rededication was held to celebrate the expansion of our Adoption Center to approximately 1200 square feet. Today FHS is lead by a small Check out Amore, left, approximately eight months old; below is Leo, still young at four years old. caring professional staff and hundreds of volunteers. We operate out of an 1800 square foot adoption center with limited parking and very little kennel and public space. However, these limitations have not hindered FHS. FHS facilitated over 800 dog and cat adoptions last year with the help of 1200 hard working and dedicated volunteers. FHS staff and volunteers are committed to our mission and fulfilling the Schouler’s legacy by caring for homeless and neglected animals, advocating for their rights and facilitating second chances for both humans and animals. Celebrating 70 Years of Making a Difference in Our Community The Forsyth Humane Society (FHS) is the oldest animal welfare organization in Forsyth County. This year we will celebrate 70 years of promoting responsible pet ownership and caring for homeless dogs and cats. The heart of FHS is a community of staff, volunteers and donors, who serve in various roles, all helping our four legged friends in Forsyth County. “Blessed with a rich history rooted in the love of animals, FHS is privileged to mark its 70th anniversary with a deep appreciation for our donors and volunteers, and as a community, we are committed to making Forsyth County a more humane one. And so, we will celebrate our past, present and future at the FHS 70th Anniversary party, Furr Ball Unleashed!” said Mark Uren, FHS’s Executive Director. As part of our 70th Anniversary Commemoration, FHS is combining two of its biggest and most successful signature fundraisers of the past, The Furr Ball and Art Unleashed!. Furr Ball Unleashed!, is Saturday, November 12, 2011, at The Millennium Center in downtown Winston-Salem. Furr Ball Unleashed!, our platinum celebration will be a fun evening of dinner, dancing,

From our basset hound, Bella, who was with me in my wedding photo, to our dachshunds to the tiny kitten that we heard mew outside our mountain cabin that lived with us for 13 years, they all gave us dear memories and laughter. We have been great supporters of the FHS. Although FHS is a small organization, the ripples of their work go out into the community and beyond. People are becoming more and more aware of the responsibilities of pet ownership and of the importance of spaying and neutering. I am more than happy to help in any way with the Furr Ball Unleashed!” stated Harris. Honorary Auctioneer, WXII 12 Weather Plus meteorologist, Austin Caviness will host the live auction. The live and silent auction will feature both a large and two small dog statues and a large and two small cat statues, designed and decorated by the winning artist, as well as some other wonderful one- of- akind items. An array of other special offerings will include memorabilia from such famous celebrities as Betty White, art from national and local artisans, jewelry, personal services, and gifts for yourself or to purchase just in time for holiday giving. Furr Ball Unleashed! will raise funds and awareness for animals who are homeless, neglected and in need, and will support the FHS ‘no kill’ Adoption Center, Educational

Outreach Programs, Sick and Injured Animal Fund, and Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Voucher Assistance Program. By supporting Furr Ball Unleashed! you can help end animal overpopulation and promote responsible pet ownership in Forsyth County.

Looking Forward As FHS celebrates its 70th anniversary we are already making plans for the future. We have started planning and assembling a team for our first ever capital campaign. Our goal is to raise money for a much needed new adoption facility. Although we are in the beginning stages, there is a ton of momentum. Our community sees our need for a new facility and supports our vision for the future. With a larger, more open adoption center, we can house more dogs and cats in a more natural environment and better serve the community. We recently were approved to conduct a capital campaign by the Winston-Salem Forsyth county capital campaign coordinating committee. This is first step to conducting a capital campaign in Forsyth County. We are now working looking for leadership and working on organization. We will officially start the public phase of our campaign in January of 2014; we will hopefully be ready to break ground on our new facility soon after, stay tuned.

Winnie was born on 8/25/11 and is a Terrier mix. Unfortunately three, out of nine, of her siblings died before they were rescued. Now Winnie and her five remaining siblings are safe, healthy, and looking for new homes! She is quite a charmer and will easily worm her way into everyone’s heart with her cuteness. Winnie is a smart girl so don’t be fooled by her seductive ways.

Bastian was born on 8/29/11 and has four siblings also up for adoption. Bastian is sure to capture everyone’s attention when you take him on walks because he is so stinking adorable. He loves his sister and brothers and lives with larger dogs in his foster home so he is a well rounded little boy.

Have you ever seen anything quite this cute? Bella is an Aussie Border Collie mix with the sweetest personality. She makes you want to just grab her up and squeeze her! Bella is one of five puppies and the only girl so she can be somewhat of a tomboy. She was born on 8/29/11 in Denton, NC and is now a bigger city girl in Greensboro. Bella lives in a foster home with other dogs so she is very well socialized and ready for a new home to come and meet her!

Owen was born on 7/31/11 and is a long-haired Chihuahua. He and his sisters were rescued by ARFP when their owner passed away and there was no one else to care for them. Owen is truly a sweet boy with a big heart. His personality is awesome and he loves nothing more than for his foster mom to play with him. Now that leaves are falling one of his favorite toys are leaves. Owen is crate trained and sleeps through the night. Owen is hoping a wonderful family fills out an application for him soon!

Meet Cody! This handsome 8 lb. long haired Chihuahua came to ARFP after being rescued with 8 other long haired Chihuahuas. Cody is very thankful that ARFP stepped in because now he and his brothers and sisters are getting everything they deserve. . . lots of love, laps to curl up on and regular meals. Cody is a devoted and playful young guy who loves toys, playing with other dogs and a good romp in the yard. He is quick to learn, wants to please, and enjoys attention. Cody is less than a year old and was born on Thanksgiving Day! Let’s find him a home for this Thanksgiving!

This was Wallace’s first photo shoot and he wondered what in the world was going on. Then he said if I sit near my foster mommy that camera won’t be so intrusive. Wallace is a sweet boy born on 8/25/11. We’re not sure who daddy was but mommy had some Boston Terrier in her and some Terrier mix. We don’t really care because we just think Wallace and his siblings are super cute. Wallace and his siblings were rescued from a tough situation where three of their siblings had already died. Thanks to kind people and ARFP, Wallace will find a great home.

Dr. Ho is a graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University. She decided to specialize in feline medicine two years into private practice as she found feline medicine to be more challenging and rewarding. FELINE ARTHRITIS PAIN -

My older cat is moving in a stiff and painful fashion ever since the weather has turned colder. Could she have arthritis and if she does, what can I do to help?

Q A

How do you diagnose arthritis in cats? The most common way of diagnosing arthritis in cats would be to take an x-ray of the affected joint. The x-rays may show excessive bone proliferation around the joint and even in some severe cases, changes in the shape of the bones forming the joint itself. Just like people who suffer from arthritis joint pain, chronic arthritis in cats may cause the affected joint to be more swollen, firm and painful to the touch.

What causes the pain from arthritis? When arthritis is present, there is usually excessive bone buildup around the affected joint. Through chronic wear and tear during the course of the cat’s life, there is loss of cartilage in joints. Cartilage acts as a shock absorber for the joints, when it wears thin, bone begins to grind on bone. The body regards this as an unstable joint and tries to correct it by depositing more bone around the joint, thereby aggravating the problem further. The process is further worsened by the fact that the joint fluid also becomes thicker and loses its lubricating properties once cartilage is lost. Because of the large number of nerve endings in bone, pain is triggered each time the joint is used and the bones in the joint grate against each other.

Finally acupuncture is also a safe and effective treatment option for arthritis pain. The only disadvantage is the availability and accessibility of this treatment in certain areas.

What can I do for my cat at home to make it more comfortable? Firstly, try to provide a heavily cushioned surface for the cat to sleep on. A small orthopedic dog bed is ideal as the foam padding in the bed provides excellent cushioning for the cat’s joints. There are also slumber pads available at pet stores and online that contain a heat reflective layer within the bed that help reflect the cat’s own body heat while it’s sleeping. Heating pads may be used, but exercise extreme caution to prevent the cat from burning itself while sleeping. A safer alternative is a product called “snuggle safe”. This is a microwaveable gel pack that will retain its heat for about twelve hours once it’s heated and can be tucked next to your cat while it is sleeping. In short, even though your cat may be suffering from arthritis pain, there are many options to help treat and alleviate its discomfort. Have your cat examined regularly by your veterinarian and be alert for the first signs of arthritis. Treating your cat early in the course of the disease will help ensure your cat stays comfortable and pain free.

Is there any medical treatment for arthritis in cats? Yes, there are several treatment options for arthritis in cats. Most importantly is, never administer any human arthritis medications to your cat. Most, if not all, of these medications are extremely toxic to cats and may lead to death. You can try to correct cartilage loss by starting your cat on glucosamine supplements. Glucosamine is a building block for cartilage formation and over time it is possible to help rebuild some of the cartilage that has been lost. There are human and veterinary formulations of glucosamine on the market. You may try using the human supplements but your cat may not be able to absorb all of the available glucosamine which will decrease its effectiveness. If your cat is in extreme pain, there is an anti-inflammatory medication called Metacam that may be helpful. This medication, in its oral formulation, is currently licensed for use in dogs only, but it has been used in cats successfully to control arthritis pain. It is very important to use this medication only under the direct supervision of your veterinarian. Metacam has been shown to cause severe kidney and liver problems in cats and should be used cautiously and only as needed. Various prescription diets target joint pain specifically. All of these diets are supplemented with naturally derived anti-inflammatory agents and have been shown to be effective in alleviating joint pain. The latest treatment option for arthritis pain in cats is laser therapy. The laser treatment helps by decreasing inflammation in the joints, stimulating cell regeneration and decreasing the viscosity of the joint fluid. Several treatments are initially required, spaced within the span of three to four weeks, followed by maintenance treatments. There is no pain or discomfort associated with this treatment and cats are very tolerant and accepting of the laser therapy.

Connor was surrendered by his owner to FCAP. He was adopted to a couple, but they returned him when he had issues with one of their other cats. He does fine with other cats at his foster home, so it must have just been this one cat that did not get along. Connor’s personality is wonderful. Hannah was one of four kittens born to a feral Mom. She was very scared when she was first rescued, but she’s now a purr machine that “makes biscuits” and stands on her tiptoes for her foster mom to pet her. Hannah loves to play with her sister Haley and enjoys the company of other cats. She greets people with a soft “meow” and loves to touch you with her big soft paws. Hannah was adopted in 2010, along with her sister Haley, but the owner was forced to return them due to financial issues. Hannah is a big girl that loves to be rubbed and talked to. She weighs 11.75 lbs now and has a gorgeous flowing thick coat. She loves to be combed, which needs to be done a couple of times a week.

Rooster was surrendered to us when his owners sold their farm. He is a gorgeous paint who was a bit shy when he came to us. Apparently his original owner was not particularly nice to him, so Rooster came to us apprehensive about being handled. Thankfully, he quickly learned that all of us just wanted to scratch him, and he now loves attention. Rooster is now being ridden at a walk and trot by one of our volunteer trainers and is even trotting over ground poles. This little guy will make a great hunter, eventer or trail horse! He needs an experienced, confident rider as he is still learning, but he is a great horse waiting to happen!

Hannah was found at a local pool. She is a very sweet bunny who loves to hop around the house and stay right near your feet. Her favorite pastime is to play with her wooden carrot toy and chew sticks. She is a good eater and loves to try new veggies. Hannah is almost a year old and has great bunny manners. She has had regular nail trimmings and holds very still for them. Hannah would make an excellent pet for anyone looking for their first bunny or another bunny to add to their family.

1 year old American Staffordshire who came to us after being severely abused. Due to this abuse, he had an injury that could not be fixed and therefore he had to lose his front leg. This has not slowed him down at all, though. Wren has many dog and cat friends who he loves to play with as well as tons of human friends. Wren has not met a person or animal that he has not loved. The doctor who did Wren’s surgery said they don’t foresee him having any future complications, and deemed him the best dog ever.

Pumba is a little cutie with tons of personality. He came to us with his 3 siblings and is the last one waiting to be adopted. This little guy loves learning new things and catches on very quickly. He likes to go for long walks and run around outside for hours. If you are an outdoorsy person, you will love this little guy.

Alex. OK, here’s what happened. I was walking along the side of the road looking for my wallet. I had recently left a bad relationship, and in the process, all of my belongings were scattered up and down Murray Rd. My wallet contained all of my identification and my passport. Without my identification no one would be able to assist me should I become lost in a foreign country. Anyhow, this well meaning individual gave me a ride to this giant hotel full of animals. They asked me for ID. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any. The next thing I know, they’re putting toys all over me and making me pose for pictures. Somebody please get me out of here!

Mack. Come get me! It all started when I was rollerblading at the Dixie Classic Fair. I’m too short to ride anything so I got upset and tried to steal a sausage. I was chased around the midway until I found a hiding place behind the game where you shoot water in a clown’s mouth until an unidentifiable object rises to the top. I heard the sausage vendor coming so I crawled in back of a trailer. I stayed in the trailer with a picture of Justin Bieber for eight hours. I’ll never get that image out of my mind. I need a safe place to go, where I’ll be treated with kindness and an occasional sausage.

For years she pulled carts and carried flags in parades. She was emaciated when she came to USERL in July of 2010, but has since gained her weight back. Malina is The US Equine Rescue League somewhat swayback and should only carry light weight riders using a thick blanket under saddle. I was found in a car dealership parking lot. A nice guy took me to an HSAC volunteer and they learned I’d already been spayed. See, I was someone’s special baby at one time. They must have moved on because I ended up scrounging for food and a warm place to stay. They also tested me and I was positive for FIV. It is not contagious to humans, nor to other cats unless an infected cat is a biter. I am very gentle and sweet. I will need to be an indoor kitty for the rest of my life, just to make sure another mean or sick cat does not pick on me and compromise my health, but I am happy as a clam indoors. Jada was just about ready to give birth when she was dumped at a shelter this past April. She had nine pups and the caring people at shelter called us to see if we could help. Even though she is only around 3 years old, we are pretty sure she had been used a a breeder before she was dumped. A big talker, this girl growls, grunts and chortles her way through every activity. ogs rescued from the streets or the pound often repay this second-chance kindness with years of gratitude to their saviors. Our home was no exception as one memorable nighttime occurrence on Muirs Chapel Road proved. Kindness begat not only kindness, but fierce loyalty as well. The canine situation in our household was different from most. We had a very large pack of dogs (2 of which were 3-legged) who shared our home with us. All had been rescued from one place or another, and no dog in need of a home had ever been turned away. Each dog was very special in its own canine way. And yet, we were not hoarders. All of our dogs received excellent medical care and through our efforts, we had had several dogs live to be 20 years-old. Most people driving on Muirs Chapel Road had no idea that a house even existed at our locale. Our home sat 1500 feet down a long, narrow gravel driveway, overgrown on both sides with thick dense brush, shrubs, and very tall pine trees. Only a battered orange mailbox revealed our homestead’s hidden existence. We lived deep in the woods surrounded by a 6-foot tall wooden plank fence with a gated-door at the patio entrance. It was the closest thing to country living while still residing in the heart of the city. On that fateful summer night, streaks of light crackled through the war sky like sparklers flashing throughout a major 4th of July celebration. Some of the dogs, always uneasy during electrical storms, paced restlessly inside the house while others ignored the storm and slept peacefully on. Outside, the racoons and possums maintained their nightly ritual of food- foraging and nocturnal mischief. Being so far away from the actual street, our power, phone,

and cable lines traversed the lot through the trees until they attached to the wooden utility pole adjacent to the house. At 2 am, the pack started barking to be let out to answer nature’s call, or so I thought. Being a light sleeper I arose to open the side door to the backyard. To my dismay, the patio gate was ajar—a fixture we always made sure was latched to prevent the dogs from escaping into the surrounding woods. Then, to my absolute horror, I looked up and saw two men dressed in black standing in the backyard—both had large handguns drawn and aimed at the dogs. All of the dogs surrounded the strange men. Even the little ones joined the big dogs in the foray, keeping the intruders at bay. The dogs’ pack instinct kicked in to protect me, our property, and their own territory from these strangers. Shouting at the men, my voiced pierced the night with its urgency, “Who are you? What do you want? Please don’t hurt the dogs!” I could hear nothing because of the incessant loud barking. The taller man came towards me with his gun lowered to the ground. As he approached me, I gave a sigh of relief. It was then I saw his hat, his nightstick, and his badge which glistened, reflecting in the moonlight. I knew he was one of Greensboro’s finest. The young police officer asked, “Are you all right?” I replied, “Yes, why shouldn’t I be?” The officer explained that they had received a 911 call from our phone with static on the line. When they tried to return the call, it rang busy. Since their patrol car was in our neighborhood, they were dispatched to investigate. First, they didn’t even realize that a house

existed at the end of this long gravel drive. Second, when they arrived, they saw my old red Jeep with the banged-up back end and they thought the worst. Also, in the beams of their flashlights, the thing that probably set the dogs to barking, they could see that our screen door had been torn up. (With dogs versus screen doors, dogs always win.) At that point the two young officers agreed that this looked like trouble. After the dogs had gone in and relative calm was restored, I spoke to both officers and thanked them for remaining calm during the stampede. We later learned that a racoon had probably bitten through our phone line causing a short which triggered the 911 call. At the time it was a very scary situation---the darkness, the men, the guns, and the potential for a disastrous outcome. But the next day, we all laughed about it and we knew that the policemen had a good story to tell too. For us, it was just further proof that dogs do protect what they love. They were my guardians as much as I was theirs, and with the policemen watching over us, we were that much more secure. We were truly safe on all bases. Training Your Pet

Dog Owners Need Training Along With Their Dogs

ow many times have you admired someone’s calm, sweet, quiet, well-behaved dog? Did you growl, “Arrrgh! I wish my dog behaved that well” ? Often, dog misbehavior can be traced to one factor: an inexperienced dog owner or a dog owner that needs training along with the dog. Like children, dogs need guidance. They need to be taught from the time they are puppies the difference between right and wrong and who’s the boss. They need to learn specific behaviors that please the owner, and they need to be taught the appropriate ways to get the love and attention they crave. Dogs may appear disobedient for a number of reasons, primarily because they need to be taught that the owner is the leader and that what the leader does and says can be counted on consistently. When the owner exhibits consistent behavior, the dog learns a pattern of good behavior followed by expressions of praise from the owner, such as “atta boy” or “atta girl,” or a tasty treat followed by “good boy” or “good girl” and a pat on the head. Before you decide to buy or adopt a dog, plan the items that you will need to raise a puppy to be a responsible, healthy dog. Food, check. Food and water bowls, check. Collar and leash, check. Crate, check. Dog

No regular exercise, dog daycare or boarding arrangements? They should be near the top of the list after the dog is a few months old. If not, you can end up as a frustrated dog owner and the dog can develop behavior problems early because it is confused about who’s in charge of its life. Also, a dog that gets regular exercise is a healthy dog and an obedient dog. If a dog is allowed to romp and play all day, it will tend to rest and be a calmer dog for a few days. Dog care centers can provide that exercise if the owner doesn’t have time for it. Daily obedience training— for even for 10 minutes a day — is a great way to maintain a healthy dog-leader relationship with your dog. Without any regular training, a dog will slip into the role of leader in the home. You don’t want to live by dog rules, so have fun with training while maintaining the leadership status in your home. If you want your dog to be a great house pet and companion, it needs obedience training. Your dog doesn’t need to be an awardwinner in class. But at a minimum, you need to learn to teach them the basics, such as sit, down, stay, and come, for your dog’s safety and so that he or she is controllable in and out of the home. You’ll be glad you took the time and effort. There’s nothing quite like
