Letter from the Editors
Some of our readers suggested we print this reminder to watch out for the animals living outdoors during winter. Thanks!
Winter Tips for Taking Care of Our Animal Friends Of course dogs and especially cats need to be inside during cold weather. Animals are susceptible to freezing if not provided adequate shelter. However, some people still keep their animals outside. Here are some MUST’s to help them through the winter. These suggestions can also be used for feral cat colonies.
1. Provide sturdy housing for outside animals. These can be purchased or homemade. 2. Make sure the shelter is waterproof and the door is covered to block wind and rain from blowing in. Door covers can be purchased or improvised using carpet strips. Tarps are good for extra protection. 3. Shelters should be placed off the ground with a space between house and ground. The space beneath should be blocked from drafts. Insulation, styrofoam or straw are some good options 4. Always place straw in shelters as they provide warmth and help to retain heat. Do not use blankets or carpeting inside shelter as they retain water. 5. Mylar blankets can be used and purchased at outdoor stores or through Amazon.com.
6. Remember water can freeze very quickly so it is very important to check water very frequently. 7. Keep bowls in a sunny spot and use dark colored wide and deep bowls which help to absorb the sun’s heat. 8. Keep bowls off the ground by doubling them up or providing insulation under the bowl such as a small styrofoam cooler. 9. Refill water bowls using warm water and a pinch of sugar which slows the freeze time. 10. Cats sometimes seek shelter in a car’s engine so bang on the car hood before starting engine. 11. Don’t shave your dog in the winter. A long coat helps provide needed warmth. 12. Never leave your pet in a car as the temperature can drop quickly, practice the same caution you would in summer heat. If you observe or suspect an animal is not being properly provided for contact animal control. They can do a welfare check.
Project B.A.R.K. is a good resource for dog houses. Alley Cat Allies is a great resource for cat shelters. Both provide ideas and instructions on how to build inexpensive shelters.

Donate Locally! By Caitlin Daly
A
s the Holiday Season comes to a close and everyone is thinking of New Year’s Resolutions, consider adding this one to your list: DONATE LOCALLY! Many of the rescues that you know and love receive no funding from the state or federal governments. We also do not get funding from larger organizations, such at the ASPCA. We all rely 100% on the generosity and compassion of our community supporters! That is why donating locally is so important. Not only are you donating, but you are going to be able to see firsthand the good that your donation has accomplished. Take Love Bug, our recent news-star Chihuahua, who lost an eye due to traumatic injury. The donations we received from the community made it possible to afford her surgery, and she is now healthy and happy in her new forever home. The great benefit to donating locally is the fact that you can go to your local rescues and shelters and actually see that money at work, doing some really amazing things. A $2 donation is a heaping bowl of Thor, a sweet and playful 18 month old Plott Hound/Lab mix looking for his forever food in the cage of a starving animal. A $5 home. He asks that his future owners be hiking enthusiasts, as that is his favorite hobby! donation is enough to give one animal her He also loves swimming and giving kisses. first round of life-saving vaccinations. Cover Story well-being of our animal companions. It is proven that animals who receive exercise and affection are happier and healthier. The donation of even a few spare minutes could be the difference between a happy dog and a depressed dog. The staff here at the SPCA makes it a priority to spend time with each animal every day, but with our limited finances, it makes it difficult to hire enough people to give every individual animal daily doses of TLC. That is why our volunteers are SO important to us, and why we need more people to join our family! We have many opportunities to volunteer, and jobs to fit each individual. We have pet fairs every weekend, and the more volunteers we have, the more animals we are able to bring to these events. We need people every single day out at our shelter to spend time and share love with our furry friends. We have an ever-ringing phone that we need help with, as well as several other office tasks. Your time and efforts will not go unrewarded. The adoring look that a puppy or kitten gives to you during a session of cuddles is payment enough, not to mention the happiness of the staff, knowing we have one less task to complete.
Please think of us as you decide what your New Year’s Resolution will be this year. Not eating chocolate is a great idea- but is it something you can commit to? Working out every day for 20 minutes sounds great right now, but will it fall by the wayside by February? Why not make a resolution you can keep- to volunteer in your community and donate locally. Not only will it make you feel great- it is something you won’t want to give up! Clockwise from top right: Blake, a 6 month old handsome kitty who loves giving bear hugs; Cesar, a 1 year old Terrier needing a companion who loves throwing the tennis ball as much as he loves retrieving it. Expect tons of kisses and adoring stares! Sherlock, an energetic lab mix puppy who would love a big back yard of his own. He loves showing off his intelligence and chasing after toys.

Min Pin. Her foster mom describes her as very animated, friendly, and outgoing! She’s a bundle of energy and would do well in an active home. Bella gets along so well with people and other dogs! She is really playful and loves her toys and being in the yard . Everything she finds is something fun to her. She needs a home without small children due to her small size. Interested in a little more fun in your life? Bella told Santa she wanted you!
Dots. This beautiful girl is Dots. Dots was rescued from a bad situation in High Point. Fortunately, she and 5 of her siblings are now safe in ARFP foster homes! Dots is looking for a nice family to come meet her, fall in love, and make her a permanent member of their family. Looking for a new 4-legged friend? We know you’ll just love Dots! Dots was born on 8/25/11 and lives with other dogs and children in her foster home. Doesn’t she look cute in her holiday setting?

Harley.
Need a best friend that will never leave your side? Then JD is the doggie for you. This sweet Carolina mix has never met a stranger. He loves being around people and other doggies. His hobbies include playing in the backyard, getting lots of belly rubs, and giving out lots of kisses. JD is 1 year old and weighs around 35 lbs. He was homeless and wearing an old John Deere collar when found. Searches for his home turned up unsuccessful. Sadly he was abandoned. But JD would rather not dwell on the past. He is looking forward to having a Forever Family of his very own. JD sat and sat under his tree waiting for Santa to bring him a new home...
Approximately 8 years ago this little girl found her forever home. For 8 years she lived in the lap of a senior citizen that gave her everything she needed. Treats, medical care when needed, and lots of TLC. Harley has lost her true love and her real home. Her mama was recently put into assisted living and Harley was not welcome so ARFP stepped in to find her a new home. She is now living at the Next Step Adoption Center and adjusted almost immediately. She has won all of our hearts and we are determined to find her another wonderful home. Help us find that home for Harley. Harley’s adoption fee in January is $50.

Little Joshua, where did you come from, and why were you abandoned at such a young age in the woods? Only this cute tabby knows the answers to those questions. We’re all just happy that someone saw him wander out of the woods that day several weeks ago. This is a precious boy that deserves a warm home and all the food his little heart wants. Can you give him those things? Joshua is approximately 12 weeks old and is ready for his new life to begin!

The FDA has approved the use of adult stem cells harvested from an injured animal’s own adipose (fat) tissue to repair and regenerate damaged joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones. This new cutting edge technology is commonly called regenerative medicine because the stem and other bioactive cells can differentiate into many different types of tissue. Once activated and introduced into the affected joint or tissue, the healing begins. Within two to four weeks, over 85% of animals receiving stem cell therapy show dramatic clinical improvement, decreased pain, increased range of motion and have either discontinued or decreased pain medication. PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma is a natural derivative concentrated from a pet’s own platelets. Platelets are necessary for wound healing because they provide hemostasis, inflammatory modulators and a variety of growth factors—all necessary components for tissue synthesis and repair. By injecting PRP into acutely injured joints or tissues, we can speed your pet’s recovery rate. This procedure is safe, drug and chemical free and can be quickly performed with light sedation in one visit. PRP can also be used as a temporary measure for chronic arthritis patients who may not qualify for stem cell treatment.
Q A
Where can my pet receive this type of treatment? University Animal Hospital of Greensboro currently offers both adipose derived stem cell and PRP therapy for dogs and cats. The stem cells and PRP are harvested and activated using our inhouse state of the art equipment and the patients receive same day treatment.
Q A
Can any animal receive stem cell therapy? Animals with active cancer or an active infection should not receive stem cell therapy. Before an animal is scheduled for treatment, a pre-anesthetic diagnostic workup of survey radiographs, blood count, blood chemistry profile, urinalysis, thyroid and a tick screen should be completed. Any animal with a pre-existing infection or positive tick screen should receive appropriate antibiotics prior to the procedure. Animals with malignant tumors would not qualify for stem cell therapy. Animals with other neuromuscular diseases may not benefit from stem cell therapy.
We are currently treating a young Pomeranian for hip dysplasia and a partial ACL tear who also has Alopecia X, a hereditary skin disorder characterized by severe hair loss. In addition to resuming his goat herding job (yes, he is a farm dog who has not realized he is only eight pounds), he has also begun to regrow his fur. There is currently no known effective treatment for Alopecia X.
Q A
How much does stem cell therapy cost? The cost of stem cell therapy is directly proportional to the size of the animal, the number of sites injected and whether or not cells will be cryo-banked for future use. The cost ranges from $1800 to $3000. Cryobank storage is $150 per year. PRP therapy is also dependent on patient size and number of sites injected, with costs ranging from $800 to $1250.
Q A
What is the recuperation time? As with any surgical procedure, the recovery period is approximately 10 days. Patients also experience pain and discomfort for about 36 hours after the joint injections. During this time, they should receive regular analgesics and NSAIDS. After that, they begin to show very rapid improvement with most animals almost completely pain free by the time their sutures are removed. We would like to encourage anyone to call for more information or visit our website.

What are some of the newest techniques for managing degenerative joint diseases such as osteoarthritis, immune mediated joint disease, damaged cartilage and muscle, tendon or ligament injury?
The qualified patient is anesthetized and 20 grams of fat will be surgically removed from either the shoulder fat or from the falciform fat just below the navel. The tissue is processed to concentrate and activate the stem cells. The patient is lightly sedated for the intra-articular injections. Patients also receive IV stem cells, which help with other areas of inflammation in the body. We have anecdotal reports nationwide that animals with other concurrent inflammatory diseases such as chronic bowel disease, feline stomatitis, allergic dermatitis, asthma and liver disease have shown dramatic improvement.

The other cats in her foster home think Tia is very special, she is the one everybody wants to cuddle with during nap time! She is a real charmer with her cute little round face and stocky body shape. Here she is chill’n at a pet fair, not a care in the world! Tia is spayed, vaccinated, FeLV/FIV negative and microchipped. Her adoption fee is $60 during our adoption fee special.
Houdini was found wandering around in a restaurant parking lot. He was very sweet and it was dangerous for him to continue to live there. Unfortunately. Houdini tested positive for FIV. Otherwise, he is very healthy and happy. A cat can live a normal life span and a happy life even with FIV. His immune system is not as strong as it should be, so his new owner would have to make sure he stayed safe and healthy. FIV can be transmitted to another cat, but only through deep bite wounds. Houdini is a very sweet, gorgeous boy. He loves lots of attention and lots of rubs! He is very well behaved and a joy to spend time with. He is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and leukemia-negative. His adoption fee is $60 during our adoption fee special.

Noel is a beautiful, sleek Tuxedo kitty who loves to play. Her acrobatics will positively astound you, and you will find yourself applauding her show! She is intelligent and inquisitive, and really enjoys “hunting” her toy mice. Because she keeps herself spotlessly clean, her fur looks as if it is glistening. She would love to be your entertainment in 2012 and forever too!
Rudi was found hanging out at a gas station, and the teller pitied him, so she fed him. When Rudi spied one of our foster moms, he walked right up to her, crying. Now, he is so happy to be in a home, he purrs and even makes biscuits during his bath! He absolutely loves being petted too. Can you give Rudi a home in 2012?

Jolly is a handsome orange tabby boy who was lucky to be found by NC CAT. He is the foster brother of Holly and thinks she is the cat’s meow! It is so sweet to see him following her around the house, and though he would be okay adopted on his own, he would be even better with Holly. Holly and Jolly would make a great pair for your new year!
Faith is a sweet, round, rolypoly baby girl who loves to play. She tries so hard to jump in the air to catch the feather toy, but her fat tummy weighs her down! She is the twin sister to Joy, who is just a tiny bit more serious than little Faith. They make a purr-fect pair, and who wouldn’t want some more Faith and Joy in their life?

Nancy.
Angel came to us very
Yes, we at Red Dog Farm care for all creatures great and small. Therefore, meet Nancy the fancy mouse. She is 5 months old and was born with a mole (that’s fancy for spot) on her back. Our veterinarian says she should be able to live a happy, healthy mouse life. Nancy loves to be held by adults or kids. She will sit very patiently in your hand. Nancy requires a safe cage away from predators (that’s fancy for cats) and will require fresh food and water daily. She will also need some exercise and attention from you to continue to stay sweet. Nancy would make a wonderful addition to any home.
skinny and suffered with a broken pelvis at some point in life and therefore may not ever be ridden or bred. She is comfortable in her daily life but her pelvis is not strong enough to support a rider or a pregnancy. Angel continues to amaze us, she gets stronger every day and loves to gallop around the pasture in her foster home. She absolutely LOVES humans, especially anyone who will scratch her or brush her mane. Angel is a big fan of children petting her too! Angel is now sharing a pasture with a gelding, they get along beautifully, she enjoys the company of other horses.

She loves her toys and is ready to pack them up and move in with you.
Red Dog Farm after being abandoned on his neighbor’s doorstep. Fortunately for him, the kind lady took him and called RDF for help. T.C. has now been vaccinated and microchipped! He is a happy, loveable cat who enjoys getting loved on. His name T.C. stands for Tuxedo Cat. His foster mom can’t say enough good things about him and we think he has a purrfect personality!

brother Shakespeare (not pictured) came to Red Dog Farm after her owner lost his home to a major fire. Fortunately for Juliet, she has no medical issues as a result from the fire. Juliet is quickly warming up to her new foster home and is just the sweetest cat we have met. Juliet has been vaccinated, spayed, and microchipped so she is ready to go to her new home. Juliet is confident enough to be adopted by herself or friendly enough with her brother to go to a new home with him.
two girls came to us together and are very bonded, so we’d like to keep them together. They have been vaccinated and are now adoptable. They are a bit timid but will come up for treats. I’m just starting out in life, only 1-1/2 years old. I’m hoping to win you over with my beautiful large green eyes and my soft coat of brown and black fur. But if that does not do the trick, I will surely win your heart with my affectionate purrsonality. Yes, I love to love. Cuddles are my most favorite thing in life! Problem is, I have no one to cuddle with. Could you possibly help? Are you looking for a girl who gives lots of TLC? You must be looking for me!! Come visit me and see! Boomer. This beautiful boy was returned to us because his owner developed severe allergies. She was so upset when she dropped him off to us and we can really understand why. Boomer is so smart and fun to be around, not to mention he has the most amazing turqouise eyes we have ever seen. He gets along quite well with all animals and peope. He is patient and sweet, allowing us to dress him up in holiday costumes and clip his nails without any problems. If you are looking for a oneof-a-kind companion, Boomer is your man!
This pretty lady is our welcoming committee, always in the front office sitting on our laps while we answer phones or type e-mails. She is quiet and loving with no greater wish than to find her forever home. Punkin was returned when she had some problems urinating outside of her litter box, but those issues cleared up since we began using “Cat Attract” litter. Ellie.
Poor Ellie was purchased from a pet store as a puppy. Since that day, she has been tied to a tree or kept in a basement. Ellie has never known the joy of running free in a yard until now, and she is not wanting to lose this new found pleasure! Ellie is an expert at fetch and knows most commands. She is crate trained and learning to walk well on a leash. Because she had no socialization, Ellie is not great with other animals. She will need socialization and training, something that is so worth it for such a cute and loving girl. Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 to adopt Ellie. n
Daisy.
This sweet girl was found wandering down Lee Street with a heavy chain hanging from her neck and no meat on her bones. Hesitantly we pulled the car over and knelt on the sidewalk, hoping she might approach us. Not only did she spot us and come running, she did so with a joy in her eyes, the joy of knowing she was rescued and would never have to spend another day tied to a tree wondering if she would be fed that day. Daisy is such a wonderful girl, testing well with other dogs and loving all people. She is very ready for her forever home and hoping you might be the one! Punkin.
Sammie came to the SPCA after being spotted at a homeless compound. Her owner, homeless himself, did not have the money to treat her heartworm disease or her skin condition. Luckily, he was kind enough to allow us to take over. Sammie is now healthy and happy, waiting for her forever home. She is fine with all other animals but does prefer her space as she is an older girl. She would do best in a low-key home. Please give this senior gal a chance! Phinneas. I was born early May 2011. It’s hard to tell me apart from my brother Pherb but somehow my foster mom always knows which is which. My brothers Pherb and Remy and I were picked up by our foster mom about a month ago from a colony. We were all really sick and our eyes were stuck shut. Thanks to the nice people and vets with AARF, we’re all better now and love to run and play and eat a whole lot! I love cuddle time with “mom”, kisses, rolling over to get belly rubs, and playing with our big foster brother. I would love a furever home especially if I could have playmates and even better if they were my brothers! Pick me! Pick me! Pick me!

Sam was rescued from a small colony along with his sister Stella. Although he is the strong athletic type, he was nervous at first because he had never touched a human before! Once he decided to make friends, he jumped in with all 4 feet! When you get to know him he will snuggle up under your chin when you hold him. He likes to walk under your hand for a rub on the head. Tortie’s mission in life was to comfort Jane. Few cats have such a clearly defined mission as Tortie during her time with Jane.* Hymn 146 All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all. Each little flower that opens, each little bird that sings, God made their glowing colors, and made their tiny wings. Psalm 36:6 Thy righteousness is like the mountains of God, Thy judgments are like the great deep; Man and beast thou savest, O Lord.
*Tortie, found wandering down Spring Garden St., was adopted as a companion for a lady who has Parkinson’s. Constant companions until Tortie’s untimely departure across the Rainbow Bridge.

Peanut. Some folks know him as “Sergeant P” due to the fact he was rescued while “hiking” down the middle of Hwy. 87 in Graham late one night by a K-9 officer with the Sheriff’s Dept. Being the friendly guy he is, Peanut, a 1 year old Dachshund mix, hopped right in the front seat of the police cruiser as if he had always belonged there. After Biscuit Foundation unsuccessfully trying to locate his owners, we felt Peanut deserved a second chance to find a home where he was loved and cared for. Sargent P loves people, is great with kids and other pets. He has never met a stranger and welcomes you into his heart at first sight. Won’t you do the same for him? Peanut is 1-1/2 years old, neutered and fully vetted. His adoption fee is $125. To meet Peanut, contact us at www.BiscuitFoundation.org. n www.triadhappytails.com January 2012

Tortie-Girl.
Hi, I am a petite, sweet, female tortie kitty. I was found as a stray on a cold and rainy winter day. I was very thin and very hungry and I didn’t feel well at all. Since being rescued, I have been fed and cared for, and now I am all better, and ready to find my forever home. I’m looking for a home where I can be an indoor kitty and if I could find a family that is looking for a sweet girl to love on, well. . .life would be purr-fect! I have been fully vetted and spayed. If I sound like your kind of girl, let’s meet! Tortie’s adoption fee is $85. Call 336-438-2023 and leave a message or email hsac@netpath.net to find out more about Tortie-Girl. n
Bonnie.
Looking for a family seeking a fun and friendly challenge. I am house-broken and do my business outdoors, never inside. I adore being outside in a large fenced-in yard. Currently, I share the dog lot with other dogs but it took me a little while to adjust to the company. It’s ok for now... but at first it was a little overwhelming if you want to be top dog, or maybe share the glory with one other dog. Some of my passions are hiking, eating and lounging in the yard. I’m 8 years old and I love kids, although smaller ones sometimes get knocked over by my affection. Call 336-438-2023 and leave a message or email hsac@netpath.net to find out more about me. n

Faline.
I was found in a parking lot where a nice guy took me to an HSAC volunteer and they learned I’d already been spayed. See, I was someone’s special baby at one time. They must have moved on because I ended up scrounging for food and a warm place to stay. They also tested me and I was positive for FIV. It is not contagious to humans, nor to other cats unless an infected cat is a biter. I am very gentle and sweet. I need to be an indoor kitty, just to make sure another mean or sick cat does not pick on me and compromise my health, but I am happy as a clam indoors. If you have a kitty who is FIV+, I’d make a great companion to him or her! Call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net to adopt me.

for her forever-home. Inky and her sister Minky are a little on the shy side, Inky more so than Minky. They have come a long way, socially, since first being rescued together as kittens over 2 years ago. They have been strictly indoor pets, both are healthy, spayed, and up to date. Once feeling comfy, Inky will come around and talk to you--usually in the evening (she knows the vet’s office is closed for the day). She likes to be petted, but not picked up and hurled over your shoulder like Minky does. Because they are practically joined at the hip, the girls must be adopted together.
Minkyis looking for a forever-home with her sister Inky. She’s quite social so it won’t take her long to acclimate and coax Inky to play. Minky will politely follow you around, hoping to get noticed for being such a good girl. She loves being rewarded with a good rub down or brushing. Minky and Inky are a very nice, quiet pair and they get along well with other cats. Because they are practically joined at the hip, the girls must be adopted together.

Velvet. How could a beautiful, 6-month old, mostly-basset girl wind up in a shelter? I have no idea, but there I was until CBHR came to rescue me. They named me Velvet for my soft, shiny coat. I like to play with the other dogs, but my most favorite thing to do is lie next to foster mom on the sofa for a cuddle. In fact, I like lying on the sofa even when mom’s not there! I’ve got that house training thing Carolina Basset under control, and I don’t even mind hanging Hound Rescue out in a crate. Foster mom has some cats that I like to chase. “Princess“
“W
hat the heck is she doing?”, I thought. It was June 30th and the day was near perfect. After a seemingly endless wave of insufferable heat and humidity the temperature had plummeted and the air was deliciously drier. As expected it was a perfect evening to be out in the garden, especially after a day inside an office. What had not been expected was the sight of a neighbor across the street doing an Irish jig on her front stoop!
She just wanted to be inside, and my Florida room beaome her new quarters.
Fascinated, I couldn’t help but watch this spectacle! Slowly my puzzled smile began to fade, replaced with a deepening frown and then anger. My neighbor wasn’t dancing, she was trying to kick something in her shrubbery. . . and that something was a poor little cat desperately trying to get into the safety of a house! To my relief, the little cat was too quick and agile to be in much danger from my large neighbor’s ungainly movements. It’s truly a wonder she didn’t fall on her butt! Finally she gave up and went inside. Sighing heavily, memories from last year flashed through my mind. You see, last October I’d made a promise to myself – no more rescuing animals on my own! Why? Early December 2009 saw me rescue two middle-aged cats named Chance and Bandit, abandoned at a high-kill shelter simply because their owner was moving. A small fortune spent on their vet care and ten long months later, a wonderful family adopted both cats. Don’t get me wrong! The experience was definitely rewarding, but also left me and my budget the worse for wear. Now here I was facing a similar situation yet again.

Bovi was scheduled to be put down and we were asked if we had room in our rescue for him - we gladly said yes. Bovi is a quiet, well mannered dog who loves children. He enjoys going for Finding Great Homes walks, car rides and playing for Jack Russell Terriers fetch. Bovi is smart, house trained, crate and leash trained and he gets along well with the other dogs in our rescue. Bovi is up-to-date on all of his shots and is microchipped and neutered. Bovi’s adoption fee is $200. To give Bovi a great home, contact Robin at 336-414-1373 or Robin@insightrecruiters.com. n

Joe spent almost all of his life on the end of a chain. He wasn’t always fed. He didn’t always have water. He never got exercised. Joe just sat outside by himself and existed. Thank goodness a kind-hearted neighbor noticed his situation and helped to get him out. A very active two year old, Joe is house trained, crate trained, does well on leash and is good with bigger dogs and kids. His high prey drive makes cats and German Shepherd Rescue & Adoptions small dogs a no for him. This sweet boy has already learned sit, down, high five and wait. He loves to run, swim and basically anything that involves moving. If you are looking for a handsome, trusting, affectionate, active best friend who will happily keep up with you on all of your adventures, then Joe is your boy. Mac's Foyle. Almost pure white, I am one of the most handsome greyhounds at the kennels, with really cocky ears! Officially, my name is Mac’s Foyle, but my friends call me Foyle. I’m young, only two years old, so I can be easily trained. I am friendly and energetic. I love being petted, and being with people and other greyhounds. Cats…not so much. If I may be part of your family, I promise to be a cuddly friend. Won’t you take me home?
For more information, call Blanche Fedor at 336-601-7810, or email greytvolunteer@earthlink.net or visit the Greyhound Friends of North Carolina website, www.greyhoundfriends.com. n
Morgan is making great progress and is ready to be adopted to a home with a fenced in yard. He is a striking example of a chocolate lab and turns heads everywhere he goes. Morgan may be around 7 years old but he still has the energy and manners of a puppy. He is working hard on his manners and now he sits for his food, comes when called, and fetches on NC Lab Rescue command. Morgan wants to play and cuddle at all times though. He needs a good run or play session to settle down. Morgan hates to be alone and will bond quickly with his forever family. He needs patience and time to settle into new situations. He’s always on alert to meet new people and loves activity and to play, play, play! For more info on Morgan, please contact www.labrescuenc.org. n
Specific Breed and Various Local Rescue Groups Please see contact information listed with each featured animal. Chopper is about 6 years old. He is great with other dogs and children He does have allergies and is currently getting two medicated baths a week until his system stabilizes. He also requires special food. Like many other pugs, he has dry eyes and Pug Rescue of NC requires drops twice a day. Chopper knows commands such as: sit, lay down and up. He would be a wonderful family member. He is up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered, microchipped and heart worm negative. Please submit an online application for Chopper at our website: www.pugrescuenc.org.
Angus, (NCSR #353) is an energetic, 2-year old Schnauzer who was relinquished to NCSR when his family could no longer afford to keep him. Angus still has a lot of puppy left in him and loves to wake up first thing in the morning and start playing with NC Schnauzer Rescue his toys. He’s very sweet and has a great time playing with his foster siblings. He will also go into his crate and sleep quietly. Angus was raised with young children and has no problem with them, he will do best in a home where there is another dog to play with and bond with, as well as help him work out some energy! Angus tends to be on the alpha side, so a home with a more submissive dog would be the best fit. For more information email rescue@ncschnauzers.org. n
I am a beautiful, young, female torti. I am very sweet and want attention all the time. I get along most of the time with other cats but can get jealous if I’m not the center of attention! Malcom’s Manor I was a stray with a litter of new born kittens when a kind person took me in. My babies all have homes and now I need a permanent home. Alessandra is a big beautiful blue cream tortie stumpy Manx. Born about 2007, she’s about 10.75 pounds, the more to love! They are a beautiful copper when she’s happy and relaxed, and change to bright yello when she’s active, interTailless Cat Rescue ested, or concerned. She gets along well with other cats and dogs. Training Your Pet
Better Relationships Between People and Dogs
T
Dog Training Tips
raining a dog is an exercise in love that also requires a lot of patience, consistency and know-how. When dog owners put in their best efforts, they can often build better relationships with their dogs that create the foundation for a lifetime of faithful companionship. Many new dog owners, however, require dog training tips and professional assistance to get them off on the right foot. Behavior problems can range in scope from minor annoyances like jumping on visitors, to severe problems such as biting. Other common difficulties are not listening, door dashing, chewing, barking, begging, anxiety and hyperactivity. Many behavior problems can be addressed quite easily. Practice good behaviors – What has been learned needs to be practiced. Keep reinforcing the commands and rewarding the dog as often as possible. Good habits will quickly become ingrained in your dog’s behavior. Don’t make exceptions – If you’re working on training your dog to stay off the couch, don’t make exceptions to the rule when you want a good snuggle. Establish boundaries and stick with them. Dogs don’t understand inconsistencies and the “exception” can open the door to undesired behaviors. Praise good behaviors – When a dog executes a command perfectly, reward him - big time. Whether it’s with a kind word, a scratch on the head or a treat, do something

to let him know you’re pleased. When good behaviors are constantly reinforced, they become part of a dog’s natural actions. Be firm – Do NOT lose your temper, yell or physically punish a dog to undo bad behaviors. It is necessary to be firm in your commands and to withhold praise if an undesirable action has taken place. Use consistent commands – Dogs and their owners learn certain commands for desired actions in training. Make sure to use these consistently to reinforce behaviors. Don’t confuse a dog by using three different words for the same desired action. There is nothing quite like a relationship between a dog and its owner. When that relationship is founded on love, and fostered with a healthy dose of understanding and the right kind of training, magic results. New Family Member - Remember when you first bring your new companion home you both have to adjust to this new life. Allow at least 2-4 weeks of learning habits and surroundings. You want a happy, smart, well-adjusted friend. Your pup wants that too. If you let your pup get away with bad behavior for a while, they’ll be confused later when you suddenly start to correct them. Starting immediately is key (Puppies age 8-13 weeks), because just as training your pup is habitforming, non-training is habit-forming too. While it’s certainly true that raising a puppy/dog can be fun, exciting, hair-raising and exhausting, it’s also extremely challenging. This is a commitment and sometimes more work than expected, mentally and physically. The simple reality is puppy/adult training is often vital for a successful ownership experience. This is because “puppyhood” is the

Growing up on a farm, I learned about all animals and how they communicate. I could call my horses and ride them without bridle or saddles. All animals were trained by my voice/ signal command. most important formative stage of your dog’s life. It’s worthwhile to take care, learn all you can, and put in some extra effort in those first stressful few months to ensure you start your new companion’s life off right. You need to focus on the importance of pack structure and how to socialize your pup. As a lifelong animal lover and experienced dog trainer, I understand just how difficult puppy/adult dog training can be for a new owner. To put that another way - it’s not the puppy’s/adult dog’s responsibility to become trained, it’s your responsibility to train them in a loving way that builds a family relationship. Employ training methods that make sense to your new fur child. And, very importantly, you have to start right away. Dogs are injured or die every year as a result of behavior problems that their owners are unwilling or unable to deal with. Once owners lose patience, “problem” dogs are often surrendered to shelters where they could receive a death sentence, dogs with aggression problems are routinely euthanized. The sad truth is how preventable many of these deaths are; with proper training and/or behavior management most problems can be corrected.
