uly is a milestone for Triad Happy Tails Magazine. Our first magazine was published in July 2010, we can’t believe a whole year has gone by. It hasn’t been an easy year for any business and at times we questioned the sanity of starting a new magazine in the worse economic climate either of us has ever seen. They say print is dead, and new companies fail by the score, but still here we are. We had a dream of putting the homeless, helpless unwanted members of our society out there and giving them a voice. Hoping, just maybe, to improve their lives. We have helped a few, but thousands are out there asking for just one thing—a chance to live. Both of us are convinced there is no way to adopt our way out of this situation, spay/neuter is the answer in the long term. But in the interim, we want to give some of these forgotten members of our society a hope that they may find a forever home. We urge anyone out there who reads our magazine to open their

homes and hearts to the most innocent and helpless members of our world and if you cannot adopt, try and volunteer at our local shelters. Offer a temporary home by fostering for one of our rescue groups. Help educate people to the importance of spay/ neuter. Together, we can make a difference. What in the World is AARF? The Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation by Janice Freeman

ARF is a non-profit 501(c)3 founded in 1995. From the time the group was formed until 2004, all work was done from the homes of volunteers. Adoption fairs were held on Saturdays wherever a pet store allowed the group to set up. In June 2004, the organization moved into its present home, “The AARF House” at 311 Harvey Street in Winston-Salem’s Hanestown. The small white house with its bright red door serves as headquarters for all kinds of activities, from meetings to adoption fairs to fund-raisers. A few resident cats also call the AARF House home, but most of our adoptable animals are cared for by volunteers in their own residences. Volunteers are also responsible for animal rescues, adoption fairs, fund-raising,

cleaning the AARF House, and almost anything else that comes along. Our only paid employee is our part-time director, Rebecca Kennedy, who does an excellent job keeping our operation running. It has often been said that AARF stretches every dollar “like a rubber band”. With the help of many local veterinarians who volunteer their time to treat our foster animals, and through discounted fees for services, we are able to rescue many more animals. The vet community has been extremely supportive of our efforts. The animals that come into the AARF program come from a variety of situations. Cover Story owners who can no longer care for their pets due to personal illness, financial woes, or a variety of reasons. Animals are often found abandoned in parking lots, vacated apartments and houses, or even city streets. Many are starving, neglected, sick, or abused. Some come to us from high-kill shelters, the police and sheriff departments (from spousal abuse cases, etc.), and a few from fire-damaged homes. When a dog or cat, kitten or puppy, comes into the AARF adoption program, an examination is provided by a vet, and age appropriate vaccinations are administered, as well as other medical tests. At the time when the animal is ready for adoption, the potential new owner is required to complete an adoption application and is counseled about the new pet and its requirements for care. In the case of dog adoptions, a home visit is made. In other words, every effort is made to ensure that the animals being adopted will be well cared for, and the home is a proper “fit” for both the new owner and the animal. It takes a lot of money for AARF to operate. Adoption fees ($100 for cats; $150 for dogs) do not even come close to covering all our costs. During the year a number of fund raisers are held, including a huge rummage sale, dog washes, rabies clinics, a doggy Easter egg hunt, “Friendly Feasts” (friends and neighbors are invited into homes where they enjoy a meal and make a donation), Bone Appetit, Lights for Loved Animals (held each year at Christmas), an AARF calendar, and several smaller events. We depend on volunteers and donations from the community. We care deeply about rescue and adoption, and we try to be the voice of those who cannot speak for themselves. Our work is sometimes heart-breaking, often difficult, but always rewarding. That lick on the face, a soft purr in the ear, or a warm-eyed look of appreciation can make it all worthwhile. MEET TUX

ux knows all about life in a loving home. He used to live inside with his owner who adored him. . . until she became ill. Under doctor’s orders, she tried her best to find another home for him. But no one had “room in the inn” and she had no choice except to keep him outside. Tux was not happy with his new “outdoor life” and he continually cried at the door to come back in. A few days later, Tux’s owner made a short trip to the store and heard Tux cry out upon arriving. Tux jumped out from under the hood of the car, his side and back leg badly burned from the motor. She immediately took him to the vet, but because of her health, she was unable to keep him

inside and tend to his wounds. She was going to make the hard decision to euthanize him, but the vet asked her permission to treat Tux and look for a home for him. The vet then called AARF and asked if we could help. After spending several weeks at the vet’s, we picked him up and he was well on his way to recovery, but still had quite some time before the large wound would heal. He spent several months in a foster home receiving excellent care, and once his side healed, he came to live at the AARF house. Tux is a gem, a very gentle-natured, playful, loving cat looking for his forever home. If you would like to give Tux a loving home, please call AARF at 336-768-7387.

Kelley Gebhardt, DVM

Dr. Kelley Gebhardt graduated from North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005. While in veterinary school, Dr. Gebhardt worked with cardiologists in researching feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, one of the most common heart conditions of young, male cats. Because of her interest in emergency medicine and alleviating pain in pets, she devoted extra time during veterinary school to studying with emergency/critical care specialists and pain management specialists at the NC State Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Since graduation, Dr. Gebhardt

has worked in both general practice and in emergency medicine. Her passion for emergency medicine inspired her and her family to open the Happy Tails Veterinary Emergency Clinic in February 2008. Dr. Gebhardt is happily married to her husband, Lee Allen (Clinic Director of HTVEC). They share their home with their five furry children – two dogs (Ruby and Nugget) and three cats (TJ Meow Meow, Uno, and Nimbus). Talullah, born in April 2011, was rescued from a situation of neglect, along with her 2 sisters (Twig and Twinkle). Her 3rd sibling had already died. They had been eating scraps and strips of paper to try and survive. Dehydrated and hungry, their chance of survival was slim. Talullah is full of love and purrs. She purred and rubbed against her rescuer the whole time the tech drew her blood and cleaned her ears and vaccinated her. Sweet is an understatement when describing this gorgeous little girl. Grasshopper. This is Grasshopper…he was in Triad Happy Tails before and we are really surprised that he hasn’t been adopted yet. Grasshopper is a very loving kitty. Elmo.

Tuesday was found running through a parking lot when she was just 5 weeks old. She was starving and very frightened. After she was rescued, she became very sick. It turned out that she was so hungry, she had eaten a package of mayonaise and it was blocking her stomach. Luckily she survived that experience and is a happy and healthy little girl. Tuesday is the adventurous type but also loves to be picked up and fussed over. She will make someone a fun companion. Tuesday will be spayed and microchipped prior to adoption. She has been tested and is negative for FeLV/FIV. She will have age-appropriate shots when she is adopted.

Once Elmo gets over being shy he turns into one funny, energetic, playful little clown. He was rescued last summer from the campus of NCA&T and was born in April of 2009. He doesn’t do anything half-way - he’s one all-out fellow who loves to play with his pal Rosie or any of his other kitty friends. He doesn’t have much time to spend hanging around in a lap, but he does squeeze in a few minutes to be affectionate and lick the closest human nose. She did not move an inch. I guess she was so happy to be saved. We put her on a lead and her tail wagged and wagged as we walked her to the car. Keila, 6, is mature and self controlled. She absolutely loves to be in the company of humans. One of her favorite things is to sit beside her human and gently lean against him. Ambrosia, 4, Doberman Rescue of the Triad is very much like her, not only in behavior but in good looks as well. Both love to be touched! He loves to snuggle in bed with you at Tailless Cat Rescue night, and on the couch during the day. He does have chronically watery eyes, but aside from a couple of supplements that may help, he doesn’t need any vet care or medication for it. Austin is neutered, wormed, vaccinated, microchipped and FeLV/FIV negative, and has had his teeth cleaned.

Why I Rescue

started to name this “Why We Rescue”. But, it occurred to me that I can’t speak for anyone else. I tend to be far too philosophical to be useful. So, I speak for myself in the belief that animal rescue people share some common motivations. Not saying that I know what those are. My wife became involved with N.C. Pug Rescue a long time ago. She loves pug dogs. I got caught in the undertow. I can’t remember the year exactly. It was before our first rescue adoption, Hardy. Maybe 1990-ish. Back then, if I had my way I would never have become involved in rescue. I’m glad I didn’t have my way. Good old Hardy..maybe his story can explain why I rescue. In the early nineties my wife’s friend told her about this man who had a pug that needed to find a home. The story, as I understand it, was that Hardy lived with a single man a few miles west of us. Apparently, some neighborhood kids thought it was good sport to repeatedly take Hardy from his fenced yard, down the street to their house, where he was thrown over their fence to face off with their pit bull. Hardy was overweight which only aggravated the damage done to his legs from the flights over the fence. Just like for us, the emotional damage would outlast the physical. It was late in the day that spring evening when we met Hardy for the first time. He was friendly, chubby, smelly and nervous. His owner didn’t want to give him up, but

just didn’t see that he had a choice. He loved Hardy. I will never forget the moment we backed out of the driveway. Hardy was sitting on my lap, losing fur like crazy, and feeling something this side of terror. I looked at the man who began to cry as he spun around, walked into his house and closed the door. Sometimes life doesn’t give us good options. When we got home it was dark. We walked Hardy in a harness that would barely fit his cube of a body. His little legs were functional, but between the bad joints and the extra weight, the walks were short those first few weeks. That first night we took him upstairs with us for bed time. We discovered that he didn’t like to be picked up. Go figure. We made him a bed in the floor but, he liked to move around during the night. He would sleep on my wife’s side of the bed for a couple of hours and then move to my side of the bed. During the many nights that he was part of our family we would come to find great comfort in hearing his slow walk. We nicknamed him “chunka chunka”. That’s what his walk sounded like. It was one of those simple pleasures. Throughout the night I would reach over the side of the bed and feel Hardy’s soft coat. He had what’s called a double coat. His fur was softer than Egyptian cotton. When I would reach over and pet him in the middle of the night he would purr and moan. It became the source of great comfort for me. He was such a peaceful spirit. I miss that. Over time Hardy trimmed down. His legs worked much better even if he never had full mobility. Hardy became a joyful, loving and mostly trusting dog over time. At feeding time he would smile, bark and bounce on his front legs. He, like every pug I’ve ever met, loved to eat. He was joyful and brought joy into his world. Watching this “learning to trust” is a wonderful thing. What happens during this process is that we become persons worthy of trust. As Hardy learned to lay down some of his baggage, I learned to soften my heart. I have discovered that as long as we’re alive, this is a continuing process. There is no perfection of a person, or a pug, or anything

on this planet. The object is simply learning to let go, learning to trust. As the years went by Hardy’s body began to fail in a thousand small ways, just like it happens to us, if we’re lucky enough to live that long. At the same time he became a deeply peaceful being. I started to say dog, which he was, but the connotations we attach to that word don’t seem to paint the true picture. We say dog, we think “dumb animal”, inanimate object, which Hardy was not. It’s these connotations, these concepts of reality, that go unchallenged, that create the need for rescue. We do the same thing to groups of people. But that’s an argument for another day. Physical life is tenuous. We look at the world around us and those we love and see impermanence. Impermanence can be scary. And yet it is where we live. The religion that was named after the Buddha exists because of the issue of suffering. In a nut shell, life is unsatisfactory, full of suffering. We must decide what we will do about that, on the inside and on the out. The decisions we make will create or soothe suffering. Failing to make a decision, is a decision. It’s interesting, I think what I have observed is that many of our efforts to find pleasure have actually created suffering and our efforts to alleviate the suffering of others has alleviated the suffering in ourselves. The dreaded day eventually came. Hardy had a neurological thing and he was going fast. We rushed him to the emergency vet. There was nothing that could be done. We said goodby. Our lives were changing again. Impermanence. The act of rescuing implies also being rescued, for we are products of what we have fed our minds and spirits. The kindness we show others is very much a kindness unto ourselves. We become from intention rather than by accident (especially as an adult). The responsibility rests in each of us for who we will be tomorrow. No one (no sentient being) exists in a vacuum. I rescue to make my world a better place, inside and out. Training Your Pet

ody blocking is a method to control your dog without a leash. It requires one to use their hands less and their body more. Dogs use their bodies to communicate and control each other. They do this by controlling the space around them. Herding breeds are adept at space management. A dog will use its body to herd sheep by pushing into them and racing back and forth to move the sheep forward. Humans can use their bodies to guide a dog’s behavior. Body blocking is simply moving into the space your dog is about to occupy. The use of your hands is not necessary and I would recommend crossing them over your chest. Concentrate on moving your entire torso and legs. Think of yourself as a goalie in a ball game. Some examples of behaviors to control are, jumping on humans and racing out the door. The method can also prevent a dog from rushing to a potentially dangerous item on the floor that could be hazardous. It is common for dogs to jump when greeting humans. If you can anticipate when your dog is about to jump, cross your arms in front of you and move into the space he is about to occupy. Most dogs will back up and try again. Continue this method until he keeps his paws on the ground. When he does, reward him! 38

It is impolite and dangerous for your dog to run out a door without permission. Move in front of your dog. Position yourself between the door and your dog. Tell him to wait. If he moves toward the door, occupy his space, (body block). Move into him if you need him to back up. He will scoot back. Continue the exercise until he is successfully waiting in front of you. It also can be dangerous for your dog to snatch an item off the floor that he is not allowed to possess. It can be helpful and sometimes safer to put your body between the item and your dog. This is a body block to prevent him from having access to the item. This is particularly helpful when you own more than one dog. The degree of your dog’s space you need to occupy varies greatly with the personality of your dog. More exuberant, pushy dogs will take a more skillful approach. It may take some time to convince them that you don’t plan on moving out of their way. Less confident dogs, and space sensitive dogs may only need you to lean towards them with your torso or take a step in their direction. It is important to remember, you don’t want to overwhelm your dog, but simply guide their movements. When your dog responds, remember always to praise him. When you are more aware of your

body language and know what works well with your dog, you will better learn to communicate with him. Space management is a safe method that can be used within your home when a leash is not available. It can eliminate a lot of collar grabbing, which in some dogs can cause fear or aggression. If your dog does show any aggression while training, it is best to get the help of a professional.

Roxie at least gave her an identity to the prospective families that came to look at her. People came and went at the Guilford County Animal Shelter. Sometimes they spoke at her as they passed. They were as indifferent as the gray concrete, and wire that enclosed her. One day which started like the others, with the feeding, barking and people walking by looking into her cage, something amazing happened. A lady named Annie, her husband, and her son had decided to come to the Guilford County Animal Shelter to adopt a dog. They had decided that they did not want a puppy; they wanted an adult dog, because it is harder for adult dogs to find homes. Something about Roxie made her different, even though at the time she thought they were just strang-

ers. She did not jump, or bark; she just walked to the front of her cage and sat down. Something in her big brown eyes told them that her forever home was to be with them. They adopted her and took her home with them. They decided to name her Gypsy Shelterdog. The next day she got to experience freedom. She got to take a car ride. She got to be a dog. She got to find the spirit that had left her slowly over the months at the shelter. Her new family saw something different in her eyes than the day before. It would still take months for her to adjust, and trust her new family. She had no way of knowing if they were any different than the people who had owned and abandoned her before. She feared loud noises, even loud laughing, aftershocks of the mystery life she had lived before coming to live with Annie and her family. She was housebroken, but did not know commands. She was skittish, and ducked her head a lot. She trusted no one. She had no reason to, she was abandoned at the shelter by the last people she had trusted. Over the next nine months her family gave hugs and belly rubs when she

got scared. They were patient as she learned commands. She began to hold her head up high, even occasionally greeting guests. The whole house began to be her safe place, and she left the dog known as Roxie behind. Her family even changed her name to Gypsy Rhodes, because she was no longer a shelter dog, she was part of their family. Almost a year later, Gypsy Rhodes has pictures on her Facebook page of her stuffed toys she got for her adoption anniversary. She did not know which one to chew on first. Her coat is healthy, her muscles lean from exercise. She is a testament, to the patience and love her family gave her to grow and trust. Gypsy learned to love and trust again because someone gave her a chance. There are thousands of Gypsy Shelterdogs in shelters right now, with nothing wrong with them, but the situations they came from. Some have had bad lives, bad owners, but they are not bad dogs. They are animals, who are driven by instinct, but mostly by trust because they love unconditionally.
