The importance of sun protection With the completion of the retractable sunshades over both of our greens expected towards the end of April, it brings to mind the importance of sun protection on our bodies. A recent number of known cases of melanoma cancer causing death, particularly a very recent passing of a young lifesaver from Maroochydore aged in his early thirties with a young wife and child, really does reinforce the need for all of us to be very particular with the application of sun protection whenever in the outdoors.

We at the Club cannot control our environment or reduce the effects of the sun, but with the use of our new retractable sunshades we will certainly be helping to reduce the incidence of sun exposure. That was not the sole reason for the project but it is a very real bonus for our members.

Melanomas are not necessarily only caused by the sun, rather, the sun certainly has been proven to be a major catalyst in the development of the condition. One must always remember to be alert for any changes in the skin coloration or any mole growth, as it is most important to have it all checked out early and treated if necessary. Regular skin checks are essential. Email: buderimbowls@bigpond.com.au | blbc@bigpond.com

president’s report by Ken Wright Unfortunately the weather we have experienced since Christmas has not been friendly to our contractor installing our retractable shades. That, and the amount of rock experienced in drilling and digging the foundations for the posts, has delayed the completion somewhat but all going well from here we will have them up and operable by the end of April. There have been additional costs for all of this extra work, but we believe we will finish with costs being close to our original estimates. The next part of the program will be to reestablish the lawns and gardens and open up the carpark to parking. We might lose some space around the shades posts but not too many parks will be lost. The area once occupied by the two water tanks will eventually cleared and a nice comfortable area in which to sit and enjoy watching to bowls will be built. After all of that is done we will need to give the whole area

2

outside the clubhouse a new coat of paint to brighten it all up. It seems that a number of working bees will be needed to achieve that aim so please watch this space for the plans. April will see the Sunshine Coast Council working on the corner of Elizabeth Street constructing kerb crossovers and upgrading footpaths. This work is being done to improve safety for people and children crossing the road and using the footpaths on the way to school. We don't expect too much by way of temporary parking restrictions but of course we can expect reduction in spaces for a short time. It all helps to dress up the area a bit, as well as improving pedestrian access. Your new management Committee is working well and we are all looking forward to another successful year at the best Bowls Club on the Coast.

words from Waz by Junior-Vice President Warren Watson When I decided to stand for committee at the last election I thought that the Junior Vice President would get the junior share of vice that would become available to committee members. How wrong can one be! There is not even a smell of vice anywhere. A bit disappointing, that. On to more serious matters. A Social Committee has been organised consisting of Max Hagen, Tony Dunne, Lee Schimbel, Greg Minz, Gary Barton and Warren Watson. We will be calling on last year’s committee for any ideas on running socials as successfully as they did last year. If any club member has ideas for social nights please have a word with any of the names above. Christmas in July always goes well. The Buderim Sports 150 Dinner will be held on 11 August 2012. Barry Ashby will be

working with the Social Committee to organise this event. Junior bowls and equipment was purchased using the $4000 grant from the department of Sports & Recreation. The Junior Bowls Committee is endeavouring to increase junior members numbers through the schools from Immanuel and Sienna Colleges. The All Schools Challenge will have representation from Buderm Bowls Club again this year. More on this next bulletin. Membership numbers are on the rise and are in line to meet the target numbers set out in the Strategic Business Planning (2012 -2014 of 250 members by 2013. A membership Committee will be formed to make sure numbers of members increase. Any member interested in joining this committee please contact Warren Watson.

the games we play by games director Norm Mackay We are well on the way with the Club singles, with a few surprises. A personal thank you to all the Markers, especially those who didn't compete. There is now a list on the notice board in the foyer for intended Pennant players for 2012. Please put your name on it and indicate if you are unavailable on any dates. Pennants start on Saturday the 4th of August and goes through till Saturday the 6th of October. With some new members and new "greens", which should be to our advantage, 2012 should be a good year.

It would nice, and helpful, if any new member who intends to play Pennants would talk to the Pennant Selectors and talk about their previous experience etc. This month's special thank you goes to Ian Conke. Ian runs, selects, organises Friday arvo mixed bowls and may I say, very well, and in the last few weeks I have asked him for some help on several occasions and he has without hesitation stepped forward, again thank you Ian. Thats All Folks.

president’s report by Marian Richards

The first Tuesday in March was washed out and the poor men doing the work on the shades spent most of their time pumping out the rain water before they could pour the cement work ! We will get there Ladies in the end and have, not only have great greens but shades to keep that Sun off us as well ! Olive Ashby had her 99th Birthday on the 18th of March and we all signed a card for her and Barry kindly delivered it to her for us . It is the BIG one NEXT YEAR , Olive , and even the QUEEN will send her good wishes ! St.Patrick's Day dawned fine and it was great to see both greens full of men and women dressed in green costumes. We had a Spider to start the fun and bags of green sweets for Touchers which were herald with a cry of " The Luck Of The Irish" and the baskets were emptied very quickly ! Tea which was prepared by Jan, Alma and their helpers, was delicious and we had our favorite sandwiches and ,to top that, a sponge cream cake. The tables were decorated in the Irish colours of Orange and Green and now the Scottish members want their Day ,too ! Etta Hall donated the cash prizes for the best costumes and these were won by Val Hill and Bruce Cowan. The main raffle which was a donation from MOUNTAIN CREEK BUTCHERY of a voucher for $ 25.00 was won by Merv McNeil and Jill who I know will appreciate some good quality Toowoomba meat! Thank you everyone for your work and involvement which made it 4

a great day . Now the Scottish members of our Club feel that they should have a St.Andrew's Day ! Having had a real problem with the Answering Machine in the office not recording messages correctly and several adjustments having to be made by the Games Selectors to add players at the last minute and in some cases changing whole teams, we took the initiative and bought a new Phone and Answering Machine combined. This has a free hand set and also a speaker button for the Hard of Hearing. Sandy King was able to get it at a very good price of $62.00 and it works a treat ! Our CENTURY 21 REALTY DAY was enjoyed by all and Tony Dunne gave the Ladies their prizes and offered us an incentive to get our contacts and friends to use their Real Estate company when selling their homes with us profiting as Lady members and our Ladies Club as well. Thank you

shades of green by Jon Heriott Sportcrete are planning to return over Easter to finalise repairs to the greens and stretch the carpet. These works should eradicate a couple of problems on the ditch rinks. Once this has been done we will put permanent line markings on the carpet. This should take a couple of days. Greensafe will be returning in approx. 4 weeks to finish off the shade structures. It

8

should take them two weeks to complete. Because the footings had to be reengineered because of 'rock' problems, mass concrete footings had to be installed. Because of the amount of concrete involved a longer 'curing' time is required, hence the additional delay. Hopefully by mid April both greens and shades will be in full operation.

‘HISTORY OF BUDERIM SPORT’ DINNER We are all aware of the fact that Buderim celebrates its 150th anniversary this year 2012. The B150 (Buderim 150) Committee has graciously given the Buderim Bowls Club the opportunity to hold a dinner on August 18 at the club to be called the "Buderim Sporting History Dinner'. This event will cover the history of sport on Buderim from 1862 to approx 1962. Compilation of the sporting history has been put together by Bill Lavarack who has spent hundred of hours on the project. It has been no mean feat to say the least. For instance did you know that our Club the "Buderim Bowls Club" was not the first bowls club on Buderim? I could take you to the exact location so if anyone wants to know prior to the night it will cost them $200. This is only a minor detail but will cause much discussion I believe. All profits from this event will go to the Buderim Bowls Club, this is a wonderful opportunity for the club to partake and boost its coffers? At this stage of proceedings I have arranged a well known sports and newspaper Journalist to be MC. It is hoped that entertainment in the form of a comedian and magician will also be present. To pay for these personalities we need money and this is where all members of the club can assist. I have planned an Auction of sporting memorabilia on the night. A well known Auctioneer has volunteered his services at no charge. If you have any sporting memorabilia packed away in the shed or spare room that you may like to donate it would be appreciated. Max Hagan has started the ball rolling by donating a cricket bat that is signed by a West Indies and Australian cricket team. That item alone should bring a tidy sum of money. Please contact me Barry Ashby 0418 710 210 or any member of the Social Committee if you would like to donate your special item. Tickets for the dinner are expected to go on sale at the Old Post Office and the Buderim Bowls Club in the near future. 9
