Tom’s side adVances to victory Last round jitters (choking) crept in for the four leaders of the Buderim Prestige Men's Fours on Sunday as all failed to win their games. However, Buderim's Tom Vance escaped with a last end draw which enabled his team of his son Brett, Paul Green and Barry Mitchell to take the major prize. Vance lost the first game of the six-round tournament by 16 shots but then strung together four wins, albeit by the small margins of 7, 1, 10 and 3. The four wins and a draw edged out the other four game winners. Barry Ashby's team of Chris Bird, Ken Collins and David Eckersley was favourite going into the last round with four wins plus 47 shots but Peter Woods (Buderim) upset the plans. Woods won by eight shots. Ashby (4 wins plus 39) was able to grab second place. The Kandanga squad of Johne Horne, Peter Worth and Mooloolaba imports Glen Lynch and David Green jumped into fourth place with a last round win by 12 shots. This win
was against Mooloolaba's Wesley Hedges, who was another leader to bite the dust. Des Wilson (Pine Rivers) dropped his last game to Ian Dufty to move from leader to the loser bracket. Peter Johnston picked up third place and Keith Turvey rounded out the place getters with fifth place prizemoney. The Buderim's men's fours was the last one to be held on grass. The club is installing new synthetic greens commencing mid July.

president’s report by Ken Wright Another busy month has come and gone for the members of your Management Committee. The Social Night held on the 7th of May was an outstanding success thanks to the huge effort of Jnr VP Jeff and his willing band of helpers. The interesting thing about the night was the large number of non-members who enjoyed themselves so much that I'm sure they will be back for more next time around. Some very interesting examples of the dress for the 60's-70's theme - some obviously prepared to spend a little more to ensure the night's success. Members should look for the next night and book early to save disappointment. The Buderim Invitation Fours on the 28th and 29th of May was another great success for our Club. The greens were full for the weekend with many visitors from south-east Queensland and the high standard of bowls was exceptional. Maybe when our new greens are in place and bowling as well as we expect, we will be able to run more similar invitational events at our Club. That will really be something for us to work on. Games Director, Richard, has put a big effort into the organization of this event and he should feel quite proud of his success. Our Sponsors for this event, Realway Buderim and Kruger Law must be sincerely thanked for their much appreciated contribution. As mentioned in the last Bulletin, the Club now has a formal Business Plan and a framework for future Club development both in Membership and facilities development over the next 3 years. Members may be interested in reading a
2
copy of the Plan and, if so, contact any of the Committee Members for a loan of the document. A Plan such as this requires regular updating and amending based on changing circumstances. Input from all Members will be welcome for when the next update occurs so don't ever hesitate to put forward any ideas for Club development or any concerns you might have about where we are heading in the future. Some Members have already spoken about some of their concerns and I welcome that input. It has become quite apparent in developing the Business Plan, that the future success of our Club depends very heavily on the numbers of bowlers using our greens whether they be members or non-members. Apart from the green fees, the spin off in bar trade, pokies and catering, is very important to our cash flow, particularly now that we have loan commitments for the synthetic greens. If any of you have different ideas as to how we might attract more bowlers to our Club, please do not hesitate to raise them. We will be seeing a lot of changes at the Club after the end this month, with the front green being dug up in early July, only one green available for play for about 8 weeks, the new Club shirts being in stock in July, and foundations for the shade structure on the back green being constructed. Further, we welcome Hans Van Roy onto the Management Committee as Snr VP after he volunteered to take up that role. I trust you will give him your full support.
two heads are better than one by games & greens director Richard Meacle WEATHER FINE AND TOURNAMENT RUNS LIKE CLOCKWORK A great time was had by all 112 bowlers last weekend 28/29 May. Teams came from South Australia, Hervey Bay and various other clubs. Numerous helpers from the weekend (too many to mention) "Thank You". Without each and every one that helped the weekend would not have run as smoothly. I was personally pleased when bowlers came to me and said what a great weekend they had. A special thank you must go to our sponsors, John Kruger of Kruger Law and Jarred McCarthy of Realway Buderim. Without their support we would have struggled to make the weekend a financial success. *****
who will have to play at different times. Will leave this up to the individuals to work out. ***** The mixed pairs and mens triples are still to be played. I will have this organised by July. ***** With a lot of games being played over the winter carnival, can I urge you to consider playing at other clubs. We get players from other clubs when we have a tournament so it is natural we should reciprocate. ***** Later in the year I will be organising more tournaments along the lines of last year. Two bowl triples and 3 bowl pairs. We will need sponsors for these events so if you know of a business willing to support please let me know.
The finals of the pairs has been held and the winners were Jon Herriot and David Green with Paul Green and Merv McNeil the runners up. ***** The nominations for the handicap singles has closed and the draw has been done. Please check the board for playing dates. The first round will be Sunday 19th June. Players will be called AM & PM. Because of the Winter Carnival there may be some 3

The Singles final between Chris McFarlane and Helen Young was held on May 3rd. It was a very close game with some super bowls being played. Chris eventually prevailed but had to work hard to win. I was lucky to be the marker of such a high class game. President Ken Wright has explained that coaches and umpires should be on the look out for players who dump their bowl during delivery. This will be unacceptable on the new greens as it will damage them. Players are encouraged to use a fixed stance or a bowling arm to aid delivery. Ladies if you are having problems please approach one of our coaches. Our Club Members Fiesta was held on May 17th and sponsored by our loyal supporters Century 21. We were blessed with a beautiful day and the ladies who played really enjoyed the format of a morning game, a break for lunch and an afternoon game. Anyone not able to play two games was given a partner to share the day. Our ladies in the kitchen,
Assistant Providor Alma and Han produced a scrumptious afternoon tea which was enjoyed by all. We were sorry that Tony was unable to attend to present the trophies. The skilful winners were Elaine Bienholz and Laurel Learoyd with Jan Hagan, Jan Muir and Alva Ogden as runners up. The innovative third prize went to the team who lost the first game but had the highest score in the afternoon. This was won by Jan Harvey, Heady Sanderson and Moreen Hoey. The highlight of the afternoon was the raffle of Joan Grant's knee rug which she had crocheted for our club. The lucky winner was - - -me! The final of the Pairs Championship was held on May 24th between Lesley Christian and Jan Hervey and Jeanette Burke and Elaine Bienholz. It was an extremely close fought game with Jeanette and Elaine just managing to get across the line on the 21st end. Congratulations to both teams for playing such excellent bowls.
KITTY AND JACK My husband took up bowling and he bragged upon the phone about some dame called Kitty whom he couldn't leave alone He played with Kitty he stayed with Kitty he picked her up without a hitch

He missed Kitty he kissed Kitty he even layed beside her in the ditch So I took up bowling to win my hubby back and found that what he could do with Kitty, I could do with Jack

The Singles Championships have now been completed with Chris McFarlane our champion for 2011 with Helen Young the runner-up. It was a well contested final but Chris's experience won the day. The final of the Pairs Championship went to Jeanette Burke and myself with a win over Lesley Christian and Jan Harvey in a tight and intense game. A great final. The Consistency and 2 Bowl Triples are now under way with 16 nominations for the Consistency and 8 teams for the Triples. Pennant practice commences on Monday 6th June and this is an important factor in not only the selection of teams but to build up rapport, consistency and motivation. Please make the effort to
attend these sessions. It is intended to hold some information sessions late June/early July to update measuring skills, knowledge of the laws and the etiquette of the game, especially when playing at other clubs. These sessions will be open to all players not just those selected for Pennants. The Member's Fiesta was played on 17th May with a very ordinary turnout of 31 players (6 of whom played 1 game). This is another event which needs to be reviewed to ascertain whether it is worthwhile holding in the future. Other special days planned for 2011 are the Laima Shield and Veterans Day both of which we plan to make round robin - do you have any other suggestions/ideas?
behind bars by ‘The Oracle’ Monica Muir Keep looking for some new wine specials, Jon is on the trail for some good drops, they should be landed sometime soon I hope. If anybody has a request for a certain drop, speak to me and an arrangement can be made. It's nice to see a Victorian leading the footy comp after many years of drought on their part. Theo's only problem now is keeping ahead of everybody else and ha has had his bonus round so he could be in for some tough competition in the weeks to come. Happy picking, till next time. 5

Just for a laugh Old George went for his annual check-up. He told the doctor that he felt fine, but often had to go to the bathroom during the night. Then he said: “But you know Doc, I’m blessed. God knows my eyesight is going, so he puts on the light when I pee, and turns it off when I’m done!” A little later in the day, Dr. Smith called George’s wife and said: “Your husband’s test results were fine, but he said something strange that has been bugging me. He claims that God turns the light on and off for him when uses the bathroom at night.” Thelma exclaimed: “That old fool! He’s been peeing in the refrigerator again!”

Shock-jock tactics COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA ANTI-DUMPING PROTOCOLS Harris Tweed exported from Scotland World Trade Organisation (WTO) prohibition against the imposition of tariffs on textiles imported from ThirdWorld countries threatens the destruction of Australia's life support system (quarrying). To avoid the importation of this fabric the Federal Treasurer (a Black Swan) proposes that all bowling greens not remaining under grass shall henceforth be replaced by reinforced concrete to a standard set by the Federacion Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) for aprons at capital city airports. Essentially such construction will require high density triple-reinforced mirror-finish concrete not less than one metre thick. (Full specifications may be obtained from Paris for 10 euros plus $500,000 for a translation by Kevin Rudd plus $0.60 postage). Such fiscal fortitude will be a substantial contribution towards meeting the National requirement for solid infrastructure and a level playing field, and without deviating from your Government's 'Moving Forward' policy in this case advancing from pink batts to dingbats.

In the unlikely event of the financial failure of a bowling club then the foundations for a high-rise car-park or high-temperature incinerator will already be in place. In the even less likely event that neither of these facilities is required, then some further under-slab quarrying will provide bomb-proof shelter for Politicians. Should there be any right-wing, far-out fascist bowlers who:(a) employ the lob-shot and are concerned for their bowls being damaged on impact with the new surface (b) paid their last dues in good faith without being aware of the advent of instant (one minute) greens (c) fear that joint-ill, shock arthritis or other structural failure may result from protracted parading on hard standings They are advised to contact Strangeways, Wickie & Blewitt (Lawyers for Losers)
School/Junior Bowls The second year of our All Schools Bowls is drawing to a close with the finals for the Steve Dickson Trophy being held on Wednesday afternoon, 15th June. It has been quite a successful year, with the students enjoying their games. We entered a pairs team in the District competition: two other clubs entered teams but they both withdrew, which means that our team will now represent the district in the State final on 17th and 18th September. I would like to thank Ian Hazell for organising the coaching and all the ladies and men who have come along to help. I would also like to thank Pam Mitchell for assisting Ian and organising the ladies to come coach. They have all been a great help in assisting our Committee members who have put in a lot of effort.
JUNIOR BOWLS We now have a Junior Division of our Club. Ten have now signed up as members and have been issued with Club numbers. They play on Saturday mornings under the guidance of Ian Hazel and Pam Mitchell. Once again all our Committee helped out and our thanks go to a few other coaches who have assisted.

The players are all very keen and some are showing a lot of promise. Two members of the District Training Squad came along on Saturday 21st May with a lot of playing aids and the kids enjoyed the variation in training. They will be coming back again on Saturday 20th August. The Sunshine Coast District entered a team of ten in the Inter District Championship conducted at Yandina on Sunday 29th May. Six of our players were in the team and Paul Cardenti and Pam Mitchell acted as managers for the team. Four districts - Maryborough, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Sunshine Coast participated. Some of the teams had a few State Squad players in them but, even though our players have only been playing this year, they came third. This is a great effort and the kids and our coaches should be congratulated. My wife and I went up on Sunday afternoon to see how they were going and we were very impressed with the standard of bowls played. Look out senior players! These kids could be playing against you next year. David Adrian

a few select words by ‘Head Selector’ Ted Field
Playing positions THE LEAD My advice is to play lead whenever you get the opportunity. A leader should play up and down on the same side of the rink, providing the green is true. It is usually better to play the narrow hand. This leaves the wide hand open to the following players particularly the skip. Try to draw two shots, leave the positional shots to the second. Look at your skip to see if he wants a different length of end. Leads should never get set ideas of lengths to play. Do not change your hand unless advised to by the skip. THE SECOND The player taking over the second position, who previously used marks on the bank for the draw shots, is going to find this method useless. Gauging the angle from the mat is the only basis on which to build up consistency. When playing a position wood, to a displaced jack, look at your feet, make sure they are turned out to the wider green" otherwise you may bowl too thin. Also the wider "green" usually has less draw, and allowance for this must be made for this difference, plus a little more power. Further, to play around a block, move to the outside of the mat, alter your delivery point, make the shot along the wider green, which takes the bowl around the block. As a final hint, in positional play, the on-shot and the drive win many games and should be mastered.
10
THE THIRD Confidence should never waver. Watches every bowl sent down. Never has time to talk to people on the bank or next rink, until the game is over. His responsibility is to be thoroughly familiar with every change of position in the head. Advice given without a request is interfering and could put the skip off his concentration. Still working for the "boss" and should have no ideas of his own importance. Play each shot with loyalty. THE SKIP The selection of a player as a skip is not governed entirely on his skill and ability as a bowler. It is well known that if a skip coverts, saves or adds to the score say five times in a game, then he has done well. His team is expected to contribute also. Of course he must have a thorough knowledge of the game, but there are other important considerations. He should have a personal appreciation of the individual qualities of his players, and be able to direct them to deliver shots which he knows are within their capability. The successful skip will try to develop within his team the qualities of co-operation and comradeship. With these attributes comes the confidence which is the foundation of every successful team. Often during some games a skipper will cross over two or three shots down nearly every end. This where a good skip should assert himself and try to hold the team together until they find the pace of the green. Growling at team will not help. Encouragement should. Finally, skips should practice with their team, organise a time to talk to them, discuss a game plan, talk about concentration, be inspirational, be a winner.
