The importance of

PROTEIN

WE ALL NEED PROTEIN FOR BREAKFAST!

In addition to assisting in the body’s growth and development, protein is essential in the creation of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and noradrenalin. Neurotransmitters influence our mood, alertness, attention span, memory and learning. Children who skip breakfast or have a breakfast that contains inferior amounts of protein are more likely to be easily distracted, irritable and hyperactive. Protein (along with complex carbohydrates) also helps to moderate blood sugar levels which can also affect brain function. When kids consume sugary foods for breakfast (including corn syrup, sugar, artificial sweeteners, manufactured cereals, white bread), they can start their day on the behavioural roller coaster as the brain can be quite a “sugar hog”.

“SUGAR HOG”: “Sugar Hog”: refined sugar is detrimental to the functioning of your brain, it affects your short term memory, attention span and your mood stability. It is no secret that when it comes to breakfast in our household, my kids don’t eat cereal. We all know the type, the ones that come in either a “bix” or are “puffed” and have a whole aisle dedicated to them at the major supermarket chains? My kids are only allowed to eat cereal on the school holidays. They dream about what type of cereal they would like to eat and “count down” the weeks and days until the school holidays so they can choose their box. The novelty doesn’t last long and they usually resort back to eating their regular cooked whole breakfast half way through the break. It amazes me what parents consider a healthy breakfast for their kids, considering it is just that. A BREAK….FAST. You are breaking the fast. When they wake up, your kids have not eaten for 12 or so hours. They will need foods that are nutritious and sustainable, so that their bodies can have the energy to be active and their brains can function until their next meal. Major cereal companies do a great job in convincing you that your puffed cereal is high in nutrients. However, they are not. They are loaded with fortified vitamins, which if I may quote my Nutrition Lecturer “are empty calories”. As a general rule of thumb it is better to satisfy your daily vitamin intake from natural whole foods rather than synthetic vitamins, where your body may or may not be able to recognise and process the synthetic vitamin. 4

NOURISH OUR KIDS

Protein satisfies our appetite for longer and we should not feel as hungry as frequently, which also makes it a better choice over “junk carbs”, such as white bread, sugar, processed foods. They are absorbed quickly by the stomach, making us hungrier sooner.

SOME SUGGESTIONS Some suggestions for a good start to the day are a combination of the following: • • • • • •

Scrambled eggs or Scrambled tofu Whole yogurt with little or no sugar Whole grain pancakes A fruit and yogurt smoothie Veggie omelet Whole oats or breakfast quinoa with yogurt

Check out the chart on the opposite page for a guideline of how much protein your kids needs.

Fish Oils

Omegas!

Brain food for Kids! Do you find your child can’t sit still, has difficulty concentrating on the task at hand and suffers from a lack of sleep? Omega-3 fatty acids or Fish oils can help! As many as 37% of school-aged children never or rarely eat fish. With Omega-3s found in fish oils playing such a significant role in the structure and function of the brain as well as the immune system, it is not surprising that learning difficulties and allergies in children are some of the major challenges that parents now face. Let alone the age-old concerns healthy eating and overall wellbeing. Every child experiences poor concentration at some point. Whether they are in prep or year 10 at school, children may struggle at times to keep their mind on the task at hand. Stress, poor diet and a lack of sleep are certainly contributing factors. However, sometimes it may seem more than this. Poor concentration may lead to low confidence, inability to apply oneself and can result in poor performance at school.

FOOD SOURCES OF OMEGAS Salmon, sardines, mackerel & tuna, dark leafy vegetables, walnuts, flaxseed, cauliflower, oregano, mustard seeds, broccoli, cabbage, kale, spinach, turnip greens, strawberries, collard greens, winter squash, summer squash, soybeans, green beans and brussel sprouts 12

NOURISH OUR KIDS

A study published in the American journal of Pediatrics found that some 40% of the children made dramatic improvements in reading and spelling when given supplements high in omega-3 essential fats. Changes to diet and environment can make a huge difference for these children, and so does essential fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids such as fish oils can assist with poor concentration in children as the body will obtain the nutrients it needs in order for the nervous system to function properly. It’s no secret that fatty acids are key building blocks to a healthy brain. The main ingredient of fish oils is Omega-3 fatty acids, known as EPA and DHA, which the body cannot make on its own. The brain matter consists of about 60% fats, especially essential fatty acids such as omega 3 and omega 6. Fish oils help to improve the functions of the brain, therefore it’s believed that fish oil is useful in the normal development of the brain, along with helping your child concentrate on their studies. It has also been found that when pregnant women are given regular doses of fish oil, their toddlers display enhanced hand eye coordination. During pregnancy, the growing baby relies solely on its mother for its DHA supply. DHA is required for the healthy development of the baby’s brain and eyes. Once baby is born and begins breastfeeding, mums should keep up their DHA intake to ensure an adequate supply through their breast

milk. Maintaining healthy DHA levels will benefit the development of the baby and help to replenish the levels of new mums. As Naturopaths, we encourage foods high in Omega 3 on a regular basis for our kids such as salmon, flax seeds and walnuts. Refer to recipes in our recipes sections on ways to increase these foods in their diets. Omega 3s are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and should be stored in dark glass, tightly closed containers in the fridge as they are susceptible to damage from heat & light. It’s best not to cook with these oils but instead using in dressings after meat has been cooked. Fish Oil supplementation is a great way to increase beneficial levels of Omega 3s. However, not all fish oil products on the market are free from heavy metals and toxins therefor we recommend seeking advice from a Naturopath for the best product for your family.

HOW MUCH FISH? For healthy children, Australian and New Zealand authorities recommend the following intake of omega-3 fatty acids.

MUM & OWNER BUBBLES ORGANIC… www.bubblesorganic.com.au

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF

I am someone who loves being around other people – I love anything outdoorsy like camping, going to the beach, picnics, and I especially love my new stand up paddle board! I love being a mum who is also living her passion at work and I hope to inspire other mums to do the same.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE BUBBLES ORGANIC? I created Bubbles Organic because I wanted something that connected me back to Kate the person after becoming Kate the mum. So much of your life once you have kids is about their needs and so it should be too but I felt I needed some balance and deserved something for me so I turned my little home made product range into a full retail range of products and it grew from there.

DESCRIBE YOUR PRODUCTS IN 1 SENTENCE I cannot believe I am finding this question the trickiest! NOURISH your skin, energise your mind and invigorate your soul with Bubbles Organic – skincare that works on the inside and out!

WHY ORGANIC? Over 90% of our range is organic – I didn’t specifically set out with that intention as for me as long as its natural I am a fan. I was just able to formulate using organic and still maintain an affordable and justifiable pricepoint for my market so I decided to use organic where possible. I am more concerned with my products being safe to use than I am about the word organic. I always use my ‘can I sleep at night’ test and if I can – then I have made the right decision.

WHERE DID THE NAME BUBBLES ORGANIC COME FROM? When I had a home salon it was called Bubbles Skin Clinic. The word Bubbles was based on my personality and a good friend and I came up with it when we were brainstorming salon names one night and it has just stuck.

HOW DO YOU NOURISH YOUR KIDS? I nourish my kids from the inside out! I think nourishing their minds is SUPER important and making sure that they believe in themselves and in the power of positive thought. My kids are 3 and 5 and they both already have vision boards! We also encourage them to eat healthy too of course but anyone with kids knows that this is something we have little control over until they get a bit older. We avoid anything sugary, no cordial, juices, soft drinks etc in our house. We keep it simple and play outdoors as often as possible.

HOW DO YOU NOURISH YOURSELF? I am a huge fan of meditation and do it daily sometimes twice. I have a way of meditating really effectively in only 10 minutes which is fabulous! I work on a rule of 90/10 so 90% of the time I eat healthy and exercise and 10% of the time I treat myself. I love reading positive books and blogs and surround myself only with people who take me higher.

WHERE TO FROM HERE? My passion has always been to help other people see that you really can have the life you imagine and live the life you dream about so I would love to start working on that some more… as far as Bubbles is concerned we are only just beginning – we are going to continue to spread the Bubbles love far and wide because our dream is to positively change the lives of everyone we come into contact with so the more people we meet the better!
