FIRST BREAK

WORDS: Robyn Wilder PHOTOS: Joseph Branston

Rediscovering cycling, taking a first dip in the Subtropical Swimming Paradise, learning about the delights of The Pancake House… it’s all part of the joy of being a Center Parcs newbie. We follow the Wilder-Heritage Family as they venture into the forest

“D

addy, we’re going to stay in a FOREST HOUSE and we might see a SQUIRREL and there is a SPECIAL TRAIN and I am going to ride on a SLUGWAY!” “Segway,” I correct Herbie, who is excitedly wordvomiting on his father, who’s just come in from work. “And you’re not riding on a Segway this time; you’re too little, I’m afraid.” We are all off for three nights to Longleat Forest – me, my husband, Stuart, and our two small sons: Herbie, aged five; and Ned, who’s two. The boys and I have been watching Center Parcs video diaries on YouTube all afternoon, which has apparently whipped them up into a state of mania. And, while Ned is stomping around shouting “BOWLING! BOWLING!’ and Herbie has already named the duck and squirrel we’re apparently definitely going to meet outside our lodge (Duck and Super-Squirrel), I’m on the Center Parcs website, registering our details so we don’t have to check in when we get there, and prebooking our meals out and activities online. I’ve booked this break partly to banish the ghost of Horrible Family Holidays Past. I don’t know if it’s just our family, or this is generally what happens when you have two children under five, but every time we’ve tried to go away as a family, disaster has struck.

Above: the family are entranced by the birds of prey on the Baby Owls activity. Below: Ned has fun in the forest

There was the time our buggy was detained at Customs en route to France because it ‘tested positive for explosives’, which still mystifies us to this day. There was the ‘familyfriendly’ beach house where, instead of doing anything fun like rock-pooling, we spent the weekend physically restraining the children from leaping off the back step because of the deep concealed lagoon just beyond it. Without mentioning the sixth-floor apartment with no functioning lift, or the 17-hour flight with a wriggly baby on my lap, I’ve been rapidly coming to the conclusion that you can either go on holiday with small children, or you can enjoy yourself. I’m really hoping Center Parcs can prove me wrong. “MUMMY! We got you a child’s cycle because YOU’RE SHORT!” Herbie comes crashing joyfully through the undergrowth on a balance cycle, followed by Stuart who’s steering what I assume is my cycle alongside his own, for all the world looking like a cowboy bringing home a riderless horse, while Ned sits primly in a trailer behind him.

Forest adventurers After arriving at Center Parcs in what felt like the middle of the night, thanks to the silent, dark forest all around us – but was only 8pm – everyone sprang awake early on Saturday morning to explore our very lovely ‘forest house’, including the fully equipped kitchen, outdoor sauna and

– the best part – the wraparound windows surrounding us with dappled sunlight and birdsong.

Testing the water

It’s only after we depart by cycle for this morning’s activity – pedalo adventures on the Watersports Lake that lies at the other end of the village – that I realise how unfit and unused to cycling I am. The last time I rode a cycle I got startled by a bee and fell off (true story), and now I keep having to get off and walk the cycle uphill so often that I quickly lose sight of Stu with the children in the trailer – and get hopelessly lost. But weirdly, I don’t mind. Perhaps it’s all the fresh air in my lungs, or the spacious way the roads and pavements are laid out so nothing feels crowded, but I really feel as though I’m away from the stresses of everyday life. I’m happy to wend my way down to the lake – finding my speed and my bearings, taking a few wrong turns but knowing I’ll get there eventually. And when I do, the pedalo ride is just finishing. Stuart and the children are tumbling onto the jetty, laughing uproariously – they’ve been round the lake three times, apparently, having challenged every other boat to a race. Whatever activity you’re doing at After careering through the maze of Center Parcs, we’d love playgrounds that circle the lake, we head to see your photos. to The Pancake House for lunch – again, Share them and tag I fall behind with my slow cycling, but in #MYCP doing so I briefly meet a friendly doe nibbling at something on the roadside, and she doesn’t even shy away when I say hello. We spend the afternoon larking about in the Subtropical Swimming Paradise – the children aren’t quite big enough for the water slides, but everyone shrieks in delight as we bob around the lazy river and roll about in the wave pool. Stuart and I wind everyone down in the warmth of the outdoor pool as the sun sets, then we tumble the children – who’ve fallen asleep in the trailer – straight

We should live at Center Parcs. The next day, it’s our first activity, chosen by Herbie and Ned. They were so excited about Baby Owls – right up until the keeper introduces the owls in all their big-eyed feathery reality, and then they become wary. However, they’re soon won over as Stuart and I let the beautiful birds land on our gloved hands.

5 Have a disco in the bath! Executive Lodges come with their very own jacuzzi baths

We spend most of Sunday following the children’s lead as they mooch through the forest. We pursue them as they romp around the nature trails where, I suspect, they learn nothing about tadpole life cycles, but do act out an intensely imaginative saga involving The Hulk and several Jedi Knights. We meander down to the lakeside beach, hitting every playground on the way down, and then, on the other side of the lake, walk through the forest, climbing the twistiest looking trees and pretending to be wolves. The boys sleep in the cycle trailer in the afternoon, so Stuart and I take the opportunity to go for a relaxing ride around the village, only heading back to the lodge when the sun starts to go down and the tree-lights began to click on.

12 VILLAGE LIFE • S P R I N G 2 0 2 0

After a home-cooked dinner, much fun is had in the ‘disco bath’ – turning the internal bath lights on while running the jacuzzi function – and, after the children go to bed, Stuart and I enjoy our last evening at Center Parcs. Family holidays with small children aren’t an impossibility, we decide – marvelling at the idiocy of all our misguided previous excursions to unsuitable apartments and death-trap holiday lets, when all this time Center Parcs has existed. I am amazed at how relaxed and at peace I feel here, and we vow to return. We should also get cycles once we get home, we tell each other, and trailers, and get around that way. We haven’t, of course, because life has got in the way – but that’s fine, because it just gives us another reason to return to Center Parcs. As though we needed one!

W

ith acres of vehicle-light roads and woodland paths, Glenn Regan’s first visit to Whinfell Forest allowed him to test the old adage, ‘You never forget how to ride a bike.’ “I hadn’t been on one for 30 years!” he says. “I was a bit wobbly as I set off, but the lack of cars gave me the time and space to find my balance and I soon got into my stride.” Glenn visited with his wife, Karen, son, Andrew, daughter-in-law, Lindsey, and grandchildren, Amelie, aged seven, and Louis, four. As well as rediscovering forgotten skills, the break was also an opportunity to learn some new ones.

Spotting squirrels During their stay, Whinfell guests might be lucky enough to glimpse a rare red squirrel. Despite dwindling numbers in the rest of England, Cumbria has a thriving population of reds. “We spotted them throughout our break,” says Glenn. Inspired to learn more about the creatures, the Regans’ first activity was the Red Squirrel Family Adventure. “This was a brilliant way to get the younger ones involved in nature. The Ranger told us facts about the squirrels and their forest habitats as we walked around a nature trail. The grandchildren got really excited at the end when the Ranger handed out cuddly squirrel toys,” Glenn recalls. Next up was the Den Building and Decorating activity. “We had to construct a waterproof den using sticks we found lying on the forest floor. Amelie and Louis especially enjoyed gathering the different-sized branches and sticks,” explains Glenn. “Karen and I showed them

CENTERPARCS.CO.UK

how we used to build dens when we were children, explaining how to lean the branches to create a structure and weave smaller sticks in between. It was nice to pass on those skills. Once the den was finished, the look of pride on their faces was a joy to behold.” The family then had to name their den. “The grandchildren called ours ‘The Drey’, which we’d learnt was the name of a squirrel’s nest. It was lovely that they were putting their newfound knowledge into practice,” Glenn says. Then the children crawled inside the den while the instructor threw a jug of water over the top to check if it could hold off the rain. “It wasn’t totally waterproof, but it was all good fun!” laughs Glenn. But Glenn’s favourite activity of the day was the Family Ball Wall, which sees guests throw balls at computergenerated targets projected onto the squash court wall. “We didn’t want this session to end,” he says. “It combined fitness and fun and we’ll definitely do it again.” Louis agrees, “My favourite activity was the Ball Wall,” he says. “I loved trying to beat Grandad.” Amelie’s top activity was Den Building. “Grandad was acting really silly and made me laugh,” she says. “Grandma told me all about weaving twigs into the den to make it waterproof because that’s what she did when she was little. The activity was very exciting and fun.”

Sharing good times Glenn and Karen are already looking forward to the next chance they get to visit to Center Parcs. “We have two other grandchildren, so it would be great to go with them,” he says. “The whole break was just a wonderful experience. The activities you can do as a family of three generations make it extra special.”

way from the excitement of our villages is an enchanting oasis, designed especially for our very smallest guests. It was here that Ruth and George Riley headed when they took their daughters Hannah, aged four, and Lucy, five months, to Center Parcs Longleat for the first time. Ruth and George wanted to ensure Lucy got a treat too, so booked in for the Sensory Play Babies activity. When you’re parents to two young children, it can be hard to fit in activities especially for you and your littlest one. “I call it Second Child Syndrome,” laughs Ruth. “I did loads of baby classes with Hannah, but it’s tricky to find the time to do them with Lucy. That’s why it was great to come to Center Parcs – you get a bit of breathing space and the opportunity to do things you can’t in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.”

A little world full of wonder Entering the Sensory Play room was like walking into another world, says Ruth. “I was struck by the beautiful coloured lights. Lucy was amazed by it all – it was lovely seeing her eyes widen in fascination.” As soothing music gently plays in the background, babies get a chance to interact with their care-givers and other babies, while exploring textures and coloured lights. “Lucy particularly loved gazing at herself in the reflective balls, feeling the fibre-optic lights and touching the crinkly space blanket,” recalls Ruth. “Afterwards, Lucy and I felt calm, relaxed and ready to get stuck into the rest of our day.”

eenagers have a reputation for wanting to get as far away from their embarrassing parents as possible. But there’s nothing like swinging through trees and balancing on ropes in the forest canopy to make you appreciate the support and encouragement of the older generation.

were having just as much fun discovering the maze and Watersports Lake. “They also did a bit of nature spotting and were thrilled when they saw a heron on the water,” says Ruth. But ultimately, it was all about the swimming for Hannah. “She was blown away by the Subtropical Swimming Paradise,” says Ruth. “She must have gone down the slides in Venture Bay 20 times!” Creating happy memories, whatever your age, is what the Center Parcs experience is all about and the Rileys are looking forward to returning so they can create even more as their daughters grow. “On the way back to the car park, Hannah turned to me and said: ‘Can we come here every day when I’m not at school?’”

That’s why, looking for a bonding experience to share with their teenage children, James and Claire Houston booked a family Aerial Adventure when they visited Center Parcs with Louis, aged 15, and Claudie, 13. Even though everyone gets hooked up to a safety harness and is led around by a qualified guide, it’s a great way to enjoy a few nerve-jangling moments. “It can be demanding in places, so it’s ideal if you’re looking for something that will leave you on a high,” recalls James. “I was worried Claire would be out of her comfort zone and there was one point at the beginning when I thought she would bail, but she and Claudie encouraged each other all the way round. “The staff manning the trek were great,” he continues. “Really well trained and supportive.” Louis, an Army cadet, was in his adrenaline-seeking element and

relished the chance to show off his climbing skills to his parents, while Claudie, who is completing her Duke of Edinburgh Award, found the activity a fantastic confidencebuilding tool. The Aerial Adventure culminated in a thrilling zip-wire descent over the Watersports Lake. “There’s a little jolt as you get to the end – Claire went first and she knew what was coming so thought it was hilarious when I reached it,” recalls James. In fact, bonding, laughter and encouragement sum up the Houston family’s entire trip. “The children couldn’t believe we’d never taken them to Center Parcs before and they can’t wait to return. There was one point when I was playing Adventure Golf with Louis and I remember thinking ‘we’re closer than we’ve ever been in the past year,’” says James. “The break really did bring us together.”

here’s no hiding from technology today. It’s everywhere and there’s a new generation growing up who won’t know life without it. In 2018, the UK’s communications regulator Ofcom found that 19% of three-to-four year olds owned a tablet and 52% went online for nearly nine hours a week. Many of the children surveyed, aged three to 15, were looking for “content and creativity” online, and often used vlogger sites to find it.

“When it comes to language development, you can’t beat face-to-face interaction and crafting is a great way to encourage creativity, as well as nurture social skills” There’s no denying that there’s plenty of creative inspiration to be found online. But when it comes to language development, you can’t beat face-to-face interaction and crafting is a great way to encourage creativity, as well as nurture social skills. Lindsey Newns has harnessed the power of digital technology to make a name for herself in the world of craft. Yet she’s still passionate about spending as much time as possible crafting in real life with her little ones. She’s the creative talent behind the inspirational Instagram account @lottieandalbert, and the commissioning editor of Mollie Makes magazine. Lindsey is mum to Rosie, aged five, Charlie, three, and baby George and, despite a busy schedule, she always finds time to craft with her children as she says the benefits for them – and her – are huge.

1 A shared learning experience

“I’m always amazed when we craft together,” reveals Lindsey. “They give me so many ideas for projects. They think outside the box and approach things in a way that adults don’t necessarily do.” She goes on to describe recent birthday parties she’s thrown for Rosie and Charlie, during which they’ve held craft sessions to decorate princess crowns and safari hats.

“Even the children who didn’t do much crafting at home really enjoyed it, and it was so nice to see them give each other ideas about what to do.” Craft is great activity for groups of any size, Lindsey enthuses. “Even if you have bigger village hall-type parties, if there’s a crafting table the kids will always migrate towards it, to make face masks or to colour.” At Center Parcs, instructors understand the importance of shared learning so while some sessions are designed for parents and children to attend together, at others – such as the Silk Painting sessions – you can drop off your child and let them craft under supervision, as well as make new friends.

2 Exploring and expressing creativity Although Lindsey loves the convenience of craft kits, she reckons the best craft activity is to give children the freedom to express themselves. As we get older we put labels on ourselves, she says – whether we’re artistic or not. But as a child you’re uninhibited. “Rather than dictating to them what they need to stick where, let them explore materials and what they want to make,” she advises. “I like to mix it up, sometimes bringing out a bag of fabric scraps – which they can cut up and stick down – then the next time, a jar full of buttons. “You’ll find some children will end up threading buttons onto string in a really organised way, while others will just stick them down haphazardly, but it allows their personality to come into it.”

3 Educational and fun

As well as helping to improve basic mathematics through counting and measuring, craft can be

CRAFT AS THERAPY While she loves crafting with her children, Lindsey does make time to craft herself. “It’s my therapy. Some people go for a run, but if I can squeeze in a bit of crafting it makes me feel better.” She used to sew a lot, but finds that a sewing machine is not ideal to leave out with three little ones at home. “Try a craft that you can easily transport,” she recommends. Something that can live in a bag, that you can carry around with you. “Crochet is ideal as you can pick it up and do a bit, then shove it down the side of the sofa. You can also get really simple patterns that are quite melodic to make. It’s a bit of escapism. I find it very relaxing, but I also get that sense of achievement from having created something.”

“Center Parcs’ Nature Detectives sessions are designed to help little ones enjoy nature as well as learn about the wild world outdoors and its inhabitants”

Village insider CREATION STATION Rob Wood, Willow Workshop Instructor, says: “Craft sessions teach children to be creative and also to plan and to be realistic in their expectations. “In all my sessions, children attend with a parent. They either work together to create something or they compete with each other. “Using natural materials appeals to everyone and it’s a real pleasure to move away from plastic. When people create something they love with their own hands there is a genuine sense of achievement, regardless of age.”

educational in other ways. Lindsey often enjoys combining woodland walks with her crafting, which gives her little ones opportunities to learn about nature. “We take an egg box out on a walk and look for treasures or sometimes do a nature trail,” she reveals. “We try to find, for example, one red leaf, one gold leaf, one feather, and so on. Then when we get home we stick them all onto paper with glue and it creates a kind of record of our day. It means we get out and get some fresh air, as well as some new materials to craft with when we’re back at home.” At Center Parcs, our instructors are aware of the benefits of outdoor activity and the Nature Detectives sessions are designed to help little ones enjoy nature as well as learn about the wild world outdoors and its inhabitants.

Developing problem-solving 4 skills

Using limited resources to create a sculpture or picture requires a lot of innovative thinking. It’s great to watch children in action, says Lindsey. “I found it amazing to see my three year old stick things down in the shape of a car. I wouldn’t have even thought he would be able to think of the shape of a car, let alone find the pieces and then replicate it.

“Or my daughter will say, ‘Well I was trying to make something else, but now it looks more like an elephant so I’ll carry on making that.’ Craft feeds their imaginations and encourages them to think freely.”

5 Shape it to suit their interests

Lindsey is adamant that you don’t have to go out and spend lots of money on crafting equipment and that, in fact, you can incorporate the toys your children have already into craft sessions. “As you’re allowing them to explore it’s nice to try to build their interests into the craft,” she says. Create space-scapes if they like rockets or underwater worlds if they are into mermaids. “If children are more interested in playing with cars, you can get them to put their car wheels into paint and make tracks on paper,” Lindsey suggests.

“ The dawn chorus is one of nature’s most powerful and captivating spectacles”

Illustration: Muti – Folio Art

Warmer weather awakens the forest, stirring nature to start a new cycle, says Tiffany Francis-Baker The first days of spring always remind me of being little. My grandparents once lived in an ancient woodland between Hampshire and Sussex, and each spring the trees would swell with new life. We would dangle on rope swings and eat lunch outside, while birds would sing and nest all day long in the canopy above. Spring was also the season for our family visits to Center Parcs. I remember sitting by the back door of our lodge, watching a flock of ducklings paddle about. Twenty years later, my sister now has a daughter of her own and we have rekindled our annual trips to Center Parcs. The place is still full of happiness – the sound of nuthatches in the trees as we whizz along on our cycles, the warmth of the rapids under the stars, and the satisfaction of a belly full of pancakes. And there, floating in the pond behind our lodge, are ducklings. A new generation ready to meet my niece, Meredith. She is learning about the cycles of nature, the arrival of new life and the seasonal magic of growth and decay. There is nothing so reassuring as feeling the earth wake up after its long winter sleep, when the frost thaws and leaves begin to unfurl. We wander through the forest together, listening to woodpeckers and other woodland birds who come alive in the bright, fresh days after winter.

CENTERPARCS.CO.UK

TIFFANY FRANCIS-BAKER

The dawn chorus is one of nature’s most powerful and captivating spectacles at this time of year. Deep within the mottled canopy of a silver birch, velvety notes begin to float through the air. For a few moments a male blackbird has the stage to himself. But soon he is joined by the bold melodies of the wren and robin, the wheezing greenfinch, pat-a-cake song thrush, whistling starling, dunnock, goldfinch and sparrow, until the air is ablaze with the beautiful chaos of birdsong chiming through the forest like a thousand silver bells. They time their breeding to coincide with the warmest part of the year, when food is plentiful and any eggs laid will have a greater chance of survival. It’s the perfect time to spot garden birds like long-tailed tits, who look like black-and-white lollipops with their round bodies, and chaffinches with their peachy-red chests. Closer to the ground, look out for bluebells, lesser celandines, wild garlic, primroses, snowdrops and daffodils. These early spring wildflowers provide nectar for the butterflies and bumblebees who have hibernated over winter. Elsewhere, fox cubs are born in March and will start exploring above ground from April onwards, while Britain’s only three hibernating mammals – bats, hedgehogs and dormice – will all have woken up to embrace the warmer weather.

here’s something about breathing in the fresh forest air that really works up an appetite. And if you’re feeling hungry there are some truly outstanding dishes you should try during your stay at Center Parcs, from the Fallin'-offthe-bone Pork Ribs at Huck’s American Bar & Grill to the Flaked Ham Hock Hash at Sports Café or The New Yorker stack at The Pancake House. And who better to ask for a recommendation than the man who dreamed them all up, Group Executive Chef James Haywood. Whether he’s scouring smokehouses in the deep south of America or cooking up innovative recipes at home, James never stops thinking of new ideas for crowd-pleasing dishes. Working in the Center Parcs development kitchen, he creates menus for restaurants across the six villages. As a child, James always dreamt of becoming a chef – he started washing up in a hotel kitchen just three days after his sixteenth birthday. Since then he’s developed his skills as a high-flying chef, working at Michelin-star restaurants in London, a six-star resort on Hayman Island in Australia and in pretigious establishments across the UK. On his first visit to Elveden Forest 14 years ago, dad-of-two James “fell in love” with Center Parcs and decided to put down roots. Now, he says he has a story to tell about every dish on his menus. Avocado and Fried Free-Range 4 Bacon, Egg on Toast at Sports Café

“One thing I particularly love about the Sports Café menu is the breakfast selection, especially the brunch dishes,” says James. “We serve a delicious bacon, egg and avocado on toasted crusty bread. It sounds simple but we add a lovely light tomato and pepper salsa and fresh olive oil, which really lift the flavour.”

New Yorker Stack 5 The at The Pancake House

“I have a lot of fun creating The Pancake House menu and it’s evolved over the years,” says James, whose pancake creations include a record-breaking stack (see opposite page). “I think my favourite is The New Yorker Stack, which is smoked bacon, American pancakes and maple syrup. It’s the best-selling dish at Center Parcs.”

6 Crispy Onion Bhaji at Rajinda Pradesh

If you've been put off by the offering at your local Indian restaurant, James is on your side. “Don’t get me started on onion bhajis!” says James. “I was fed up of going out and getting a claggy mess of greasy fried onion, so I developed a recipe that uses tempura flour and gram flour to lighten the bhaji up. It’s a light, crispy onion surrounded by a nice, crunchy turmeric batter, with fresh coriander through it. And we serve it with a spiced mango dressing. It’s really very good.”

Mixed Tandoori at Rajinda Pradesh

“The tandoori selection at Rajinda is fantastic,” says James. “It’s chicken tikka, lamb chop, salmon and prawns in a lovely marinade, served on a skillet of vegetables, with a naan and a coriander sauce, plus fresh lemon to bring out all the beautiful flavours.”

Pork Ribs at Huck’s 3 Fallin’-off-the-bone American Bar & Grill “I did a huge tour of the States to learn about smoking – the meats, cuts and service,” says James (see also box on page 24). “So this dish is very close to my heart.” The careful preparation of this dish showcases the knowledge James picked up during his tour of America's south: the ribs are lovingly marinated, smoked, roasted and basted to give them the tangy, authentic taste of the American BBQ.

Ham Hock Hash or Smoked 7 Flaked Salmon Hash at Sports Café

“If you’re hungry, we have two different types of hashes in the Sports Café,” says James. “These are fried potatoes and caramelised onions, combined with ham hock or smoked salmon and then bound with béarnaise sauce. So you’ve got a nice rich vinegar cutting through the fat and the aftertaste of tarragon, with a freshly fried egg on top. They’re both absolutely lovely.”

A TASTE OF THE STATES To achieve the authentic American flavour of the menu at Huck’s Bar & Grill, James Haywood (pictured below) journeyed to the deep south of the USA “When I’m looking for inspiration, I eat out a lot,” says James. “I go to loads of places, from top restaurants and hotels, to markets and street food vendors. Social media is superb too, it puts all these ideas at your fingertips. “I could see smokehouses were becoming a trend in London and I wanted to learn how to do it properly,” says James. “So, I immersed myself in that environment.” James travelled from New York to Kansas, where “smoking is almost a religion”. He then headed to Las Vegas, via Texas, to look at the commercial smokehouses there. Working with a renowned consultant pitmaster (or BBQ expert, to those who don’t smoke), James said they tried lots of different wood chips and cuts of meats as part of the long process of recipe development for the restaurant's menu. “It was quite a journey but it’s something we’re really pleased with,” says James. “We’re smoking our own meats and baking our own breads. I’m so proud of the teams, the service and standards of food we’re producing.”

“ So much of the enjoyment of cooking and eating is about sharing your experiences”

Illustration: Muti – Folio Art

From lentil pakoras in Bangladesh to just-caught prawns in Portugal, Nadiya Hussain shares her tastiest holiday food memories When I book a family holiday it’s all about what we can eat. I think it’s the same for lots of people, especially these days. We’ve been eating since the beginning of time, but now I think food is more important than ever – it’s not just our fuel, it’s part of our mental health and well-being too. We always went to Bangladesh for our holidays when I was a child. It was the same for everyone I knew – we all went to see family in India, Pakistan or Bangladesh. I used to think it was annoying, but when I grew up and had children of my own I realised how important it was. You can’t get any more immersed in local culture than in a rural village in Bangladesh. My grandad was a rice farmer and grew pink rice, which isn’t readily available any more. I remember saying to my dad, “I can’t eat this.” His reply was a firm, “You’ll eat what you’re given.” It tasted a little like red rice, but more like brown rice. It’s absolutely beautiful and part of me wants to go and bring it back from the few villages that still grow it. I’d pay good money to eat some of that pink rice now. On one of those holidays, my father sneaked me into the village market where girls didn’t usually go. All the men were drinking sweet tea and eating lentil pakoras, which came wrapped in a bit of greasy newspaper. They were the best thing ever. No matter

CENTERPARCS.CO.UK

what I do, I can’t recreate that taste; because it’s not just the taste – it’s the smells and the sounds and being an 11-year-old girl with my dad. When I’m away with my family now we usually end up eating delicious seafood or vegetarian food. On a recent trip to the Portuguese coast, there were fish and prawns literally coming off the boat into the restaurant. We ate prawns for 10 days straight, cooked with just olive oil, garlic and a few chilli flakes. Cooking things simply is wonderful. Having grown up in a house where a curry could take hours, I find it incredible to eat something that cooks in minutes. Today, family breaks are special because they are the main opportunity we get to spend quality time together. Food is such a big part of that. I’m lucky because my children are quite adventurous eaters. Part of me wants to go on holiday somewhere where they’ll say they don’t like the look of what’s on offer, because I’d like the challenge. It’s difficult to choose, but my favourite food memory from filming The Chronicles of Nadiya is probably eating the little coconut samosas that I used to have when I was a child. It was lovely to give a new lease of life to something that my grandma cooked for me. So much of the enjoyment of cooking and eating is about sharing your experiences.

Wake up and smell the coffee… just make sure it's hot and freshly roasted. You can’t beat a classic – especially when it’s made by someone else – but one of the best things about going out for breakfast is shaking up your morning drink routine. Sure, you can order a traditional breakfast tea if that’s your favourite way to start the day. But if you fancy something out of the ordinary, you’ll discover a delectable range of drinks at all the Center Parcs eateries. From freshly prepared

smoothies and juices, to luxury hot chocolates and creamy milkshakes – there’s plenty to whet your appetite. And if you’re seeking a change from the usual background of news headlines and traffic reports, just imagine sipping your favourite coffee to the sound of birdsong and the sight of trees. It’s your wake-up drink made better.

2 Make a plan of action

Our best-laid plans are often made over a hearty breakfast. When you go out for the first meal of the day, your body and mind are rested, your favourite people are with you around the table and you’re kick-starting your brain with mouthfuls of pillowy pancake. It’s the perfect moment to plan the day ahead. Perhaps you’ll draw-up a cycle route to explore every nook and gnarl of the Center Parcs forest, work out how to fit a Wildlife Walk and a High Ropes Challenge into one afternoon, or plot a Twilight session at Aqua Sana spa. Whatever plans you make, a breakfast strategy session over a perfectly poached egg will help you maximise your holiday fun potential.

3 A sociable way to start your day

We all know that sitting down together for family meals is important. But with the inevitable morning dash (after just one more snooze), how often do we get quality time to talk at breakfast? That’s what makes going out for breakfast so smile-inducingly brilliant: there’s no washing up, no holding a piece of toast in one hand and an iron in the other. You just get up, get dressed and step into the forest. As life barrels past, it can be hard to find time for those meaningful, face-to-face conversations with the people we love. But going out for breakfast makes us slow down and gives us a chance to just enjoy being in the moment together. Yes, the food is important – it's very important. But the experience of going out for breakfast is about so much more than just the food. And who knows… it may become the start of a delicious new family tradition.

Show off your grill skills by cooking up a hearty feast on the barbecue or – as the weather heats up – stretch out on one of the comfy loungers. On the other side of the lodges, you’ll also discover a hot tub where you can take a soothing soak after a busy day of activities or dip into after dark to watch the stars come out.

Life on the water’s edge Waterside Lodges are no less awe-inspiring on the inside, where the décor continues the nautical theme. As you enter, you’ll find three bedrooms – two doubles and one twin – each with an en-suite bathroom. Two of these bedrooms have rustic balconies overlooking the lake: sip your morning coffee while watching the wildlife in the lake, and the forest around it, wake up.

Above: with plenty of dining options, take time out to relax with your partner after a fun-packed day. Below: head to the Leisure Bowl for friendly competition and cocktails. Facing page: relax with glass of wine

as you recline in your cosy robe. Or explore one of the many nature-inspired spa experiences rooms. The Twilight Taster for 2 spa session is the ideal option for couples who are looking to spend time together after a day of fun-filled activities. Greeted with a glass of bubbly and a complimentary robe and towel hire on arrival, you’ll have access to the spa from 4pm to 9pm. That’s plenty of time to unwind and even pamper yourself with a special treatment for the extra ‘ahhhh’ factor. If you’re celebrating a special occasion – or just want an excuse to pop the cork on a bottle of Champagne or Prosecco – why not enjoy a glass of something sparkling or a fruity cocktail in the spa’s exclusive Vitalé Café Bar? The menu has plenty of tempting meals and light bites too, including the Vitalé Platter, which is perfect for sharing. And best of all, you can wine and dine while still wearing your robe.

Whether you’ve got your own embroidered bowling bag or you haven’t played the game since the nineties, rediscover the joy of friendly competition at our lively Leisure Bowl locations. Cheer to the clatter of pins and sing along to your favourite pop classics as you battle it out on the lanes. Winner takes it all, loser buys the drinks. And you won’t need to go far to get them – you’ll find cocktails, beers, soft drinks, bar snacks and more on the new menu in the Leisure Bowl bar.

Dinner for two, uninterrupted If you have children, it’s likely you won’t have completed a conversation with your loved one at the dinner table – or maybe at any time – in several months. And even if you don’t have little ones, it can still be hard to find time in a busy working week to really connect. So, what better way to enjoy the end of an exhilarating day on your break than over a delicious meal… just the two of you, with no interruptions? You’ll find a variety of dining and drinking options across Center Parcs. But if you’re seeking a spiceinfused colourful creation in a contemporary setting, head over to Rajinda Pradesh. This Eastern-inspired restaurant serves freshly made dishes, from mild and creamy to rich and fiery. The classic Rajinda Bhuna comes highly recommended, but if you’d like to savour the experience with your partner for a little longer, why not plump for an Experience Banquet? For starters, you’ll share a Poppadum Platter followed by a selection of all-time favourites, including chicken tikka, crispy onion bhaji and butternut squash samosa. You can then choose a main Rajinda curry with rice and naan bread – plus a cool pint of Cobra beer, a glass of wine, or a soft drink. Beyond the Indian cuisine, you’ll discover a host of Far Eastern dishes. Tuck into the tender fried Korean BBQ pork ribs or Japanese-style tempura vegetables, followed by a Malaysian braised beef rendang. And for the perfect pudding, there’s a refreshing lemon sorbet made with real lemon zest. Two spoons? Let’s not take this date night too far.

“A BIT OF BLISS AFTER A BUSY WEEK” Katrina Ravn sampled a slice of serenity with a spa session at Longleat Forest’s Aqua Sana with boyfriend Alex Kelly It’s not often that my boyfriend Alex and I indulge in a spot of self-care, but after our spa session at Longleat Forest's Aqua Sana, we can’t wait to do it again. With its Grecian pillars and forest surroundings, this certainly wasn’t the leisure centre spa experience I’ve had before. In fact, I think I undersold it when I first described it to Alex. A spa newbie, he’d had his reservations. Would it be too busy or make him feel uncomfortable? Those concerns were soon soothed away after we slipped on our complimentary robes and entered the sigh-inducing loveliness that is Aqua Sana.

From the Moonlight Steam Room to an ice cave, there were 24 luxurious spa experiences for us to enjoy. In the three hours we were there, we drifted dreamily between the hot spring tubs, saunas and steam rooms, occasionally taking a dip in the heated outdoor pool which sits at the centre. The spa allowed us to chill together and have a bit of bliss after a busy week at work.

Treat your senses In the Forest Glade steam room, we were transported to the tropical rainforest, as cooling mists hydrated our skin. Alex enjoyed jumping from the sauna to this room and playing with the rainforest shower settings – with different sensations, scents and temperatures. In the Nordic Forest,

we braved the Ice Cave, then cosiedup under blankets in the Scandinavian Snug. While in the Forest Meditation space, we gazed up at a skyscape that sweeps from dappled day to sparkly night. Our ultimate room was the Salt Steam Room. It smelt amazing and we spent a long time reclining on the comfy chairs in this dimly lit pod. After sharing a bottle of wine in the Vitalé Café Bar and congratulating ourselves on an afternoon well spent, we stepped back into the forest, carrying a new-found glow throughout the rest of our break. • For more see aquasana.co.uk • Book at spa session through your Center Parcs online account

HAPPY DAYS Experiences make us happier than material things do. But what kind of experiences should we focus on? And how do we make sure we get the most out of them? WORDS: Charlie Lyon

ENRICH YOUR CENTER PARCS EXPERIENCE Use James’s seven rules to maximise happiness on your break

1

OUTSIDE AND OFFLINE Getting outside is easy; getting offline can be trickier. Try leaving your phones in the lodge while you go out for the day. Arrange a rendezvous time and place in case you split up.

40 VILLAGE LIFE • S P R I N G 2 0 2 0

2

CREATE A STORY TOGETHER If you’ve not cycled for a while, hire a cycle and head out for a ride in the forest. Make it more of an adventure by putting your map away and seeing where you end up.

3

TRANSFORM YOURSELF Experiences can help you grow as a person. Try an All Archery Experience to hone your strength and stability, or a Bollywood Dancing activity to learn a little Indian culture.

4

ENHANCE RELATIONSHIPS Hiring a Family Cabana at one of our Subtropical Swimming Paradises will help make sure you spend as much quality time together as possible… in between dips in the pool.

W

ould you rather upgrade your car to a flashier model or treat your family to a break they’ll never forget? Today, more and more people are choosing to invest in the experience economy and no one is more excited about this shift in attitude than author and speaker James Wallman. His first book, Stuffocation, focused on the problems of materialism. His second, Time and How to Spend it: The 7 Rules for Richer, Happier Days, which was published last year, was born from answering readers’ questions on how to become more ‘experience intelligent’. “I started to think more about the seven rules for happier days,” says James. “We have 86,400 seconds in a day and the way we spend them matters. You know that awful phrase, time is money – it illustrates how wrongly people think about time. You can get more money, but one day you’ll go to the time ATM and there won’t be anything left.” James started thinking about how fast his two children were growing up and how he wanted to use his leisure time to create enhanced experiences for him and his family.

“The more an experience challenges you or pushes you out of your comfort zone, the more likely you are to connect with and inspire others” if you charge your phone outside of your bedroom, you’ll sleep better.” He is also a huge believer in the power of biophilia – the affinity between human beings and the natural world. “The data’s really clear about nature,” he says. Because our species has spent 99% of its existence in nature, we’re hard-wired to find the sights, sounds and smells of nature pleasant and relaxing, he believes. Creating stories is another key factor in enhancing happiness and success for James. And the more an experience challenges you or pushes you out of your comfort zone, the more likely you are to connect with and inspire others when you regale them with the story later. “Even though we think we’ll be happier when we’ve got our feet up and are relaxing, we’re actually happiest when we’re in ‘flow’ – when we’re fully engaged in a task or activity,” he enthuses. Although, he does admit there is need for everyone to ‘flop’ from time to time. “If you’re whacked and have run out of energy, then you can flop,” he admits. “But do it in a way that is restorative for you. Then go and do something interesting.”

The golden rules Getting ‘outside and offline’ is one of James’ rules. “In our society people work hard Monday to Friday,” he says. “Then they get to the weekend and end up scrolling through social media and watching rubbish on TV. When my family is together at the weekend it’s time to get outside and offline. I’ll take them to the park, but I’ll leave my phone behind because then I’m more focussed.” Indeed, putting more space between you and your phone will help increase your enjoyment levels in many areas of your life, says James. “There’s data that shows

5

MAKE THINGS MORE INTENSE “Select intensity,” says James. “Don’t just have a soft massage, have a hard one.” Aqua Sana spa's Elemis Freestyle Deep Tissue Massage will leave you feeling grounded, focused and relaxed.

CENTERPARCS.CO.UK

6

DO THINGS FOR OTHER PEOPLE If you’re not interested in crafts or paddle boarding, but someone else is and wants a companion – go with them! You can never predict when or where new life passions will be ignited.

7

Get outside in nature, spend time with family and friends and take on new challenges to get the maximum enjoyment out of your experiences

MAKING MEMORIES We remember through snapshots, which tend to be the beginning, the end and the extreme moments. Get things going with a bang, schedule in highs, such as Laser Combat, and leave the best till last.

People power Making sure experiences enhance relationships is also crucial, says James – “relationships not only with other people, but with yourself too. Having a sense of belonging and connecting with your friends and family is key.” Experiences can help you feel connected to others – even if they’re solitary pursuits, such as running or painting – as they give you this sense of belonging, insists James. That said, he also recommends joining a club as there are benefits to be had from sharing your passion with others. Then there’s doing things for other people, he continues. “The thought of doing something for someone else may feel annoying because time is short. But if you can do something for someone else, you’ll get a sense of time affluence and you’ll feel happier.”

Tracy Ralph, Elveden guest If you asked my sons, Miller, aged nine, and Hudson, six, if they wanted to go abroad for their holidays or to Center Parcs, they’d always choose the latter. We’ve stayed at Elveden four times now. The children appreciate the freedom they get and love swimming, riding their bikes and trying out new activities. Adventure Golf and Footgolf – where you use your feet as clubs – are particular favourites. In 2014, I contracted sepsis and had to have both my legs amputated below the knee; I also lost my fingers. That’s another reason Center Parcs is our happy place – it’s fantastic from an accessibility point of view. Elveden is spacious and flat, and all the staff are friendly and welcoming. When I come here I see other people with disabilities and it fills me with confidence. I often hire a trike and go cycling by myself – it’s so liberating. My husband Bradley adores it here too. He sometimes worries about me so it’s nice for us all to be in a safe environment where we can relax as a family. It’s like a home from home for us. I recently got a pair of prosthetic aqua legs, which allow me to swim, and I can’t wait to try them out in the Subtropical Swimming Paradise – that’s next on my to-do list.

Kay Durrant, Health and Safety Technician BOOK IT If you have accessibility needs, we can plan your stay to ensure complete comfort at all of our villages. Dedicated parking and ramps make getting to your accommodation easy. Lodges are open-plan with fully equipped kitchens that have lowered worktops, while spacious bedrooms feature electric beds and bathrooms boast walkin/wheel-in showers. In our Exclusive Adapted Lodges, you’ll find hot tubs that have hoists, and saunas and steam rooms with wider access. Find out more at centerparcs.co.uk/ discover-center-parcs

We always encourage people with additional needs to visit our site before their stay so they can get a feel for our set-up. Elveden is especially good for wheelchair users as it’s flat and we have a range of accessible lodges and hotel rooms, featuring wider doorways and lower counters. Plus, we make sure all of our restaurants meet Disability Discrimination Act requirements. Making everyone feel included and welcome is very important to us. If guests let us know their needs beforehand, we can gear particular activities towards them. For example, we can open up the roller rink especially for wheelchair users and their families – including lights and music, of course! We often get parties of children with disabilities visiting the village and it’s great to see how much they enjoy it. I’ve worked at Center Parcs for 15 years and my favourite part is the amount of job satisfaction I get. Often, I’ll meet up with guests who I’ve taken around before their break. Over coffee they’ll tell me what a fantastic time they’re having. I also get lots of emails saying thank you. It’s lovely.
