Dear friends and colleagues It is my privilege and pleasure to present Politiken Literary Agency’s list for the autumn of 2015. You will find crime, literary fiction, narrative non-fiction and illustrated fiction. It features Erik Valeur's new novel Logbook from a Lifewreck (Logbog fra et livsforlis), Jesper Stein's fourth title about Axel Steen, Aisha (Aisha), and, of course, Jussi Adler-Olsen. Among these strong and bestselling authors I would like to direct your attention to a first novel: The Plan (Planen) by Morten Pape. It is a story about coming of age in a multicultural microcosm, in a culturally deprived environment characterized by violence and crime, the result of the failed integration policies of the 1990s. It is powerful, moving, gripping and has a fantastic drive to it – read it.
The second title is Bo Lidegaard's The White Buses (Redningsmænd), the extraordinary account of a group of Scandinavian activists who saved more than 20,000 prisoners from German concentrations camps, mobilizing politicians, finding a mode of transport and obtaining the necessary consent from leading Nazis. Its approach speaks directly to the current debate on humanitarian relief efforts. Please let us know your needs: sample translations, reviews, information on translation grants, collaboration on marketing plans, organizing visits with our authors in your country – we will be happy to help you! I am looking forward to talking books and business with you.
On our narrative nonfiction list, two titles stand out. The first is award-winning writer Puk Damsgård's The ISIS Hostage (Kan du se månen, Daniel). It offers a detailed insight into the ordeal of the hostages who were held by ISIS in Syria, and a rare glimpse into the secret world of the investigations launched to find them. Drawing on European, American and Arabian history, the book illustrates both how they are linked and how they feed into one of the greatest challenges the Middle East will face in the years to come.

T
he Plan is a coming-of-age story about being a child, growing up, falling in love and trying to find yourself in a multicultural microcosm. At the same time, it is a historical novel about the human cost of the failed integration policies of the 1990s and the hostile immigration debates of the 2000s, which culminated in caricatures of the prophet Mohammed, gang warfare and a capital city that was set aflame. Morten is growing up in Copenhagen’s Urbanplan ghetto, the worst conceivable start in life. He is intelligent, more talented than his schoolfellows, and dreams of making it as an actor. But he’s clinging to the dream under impossible conditions in a sleazy and culturally deprived environment characterised by violence and crime, surrounded by the lower classes’ self-perpetuating ‘who-do-you-think-youare’ attitude, which more than anything else reinforces his and his friends’ conviction that they’ll never amount to anything. When Morten’s parents get divorced, it sets off a chain reaction of disappointments that turns everything on its head, and gradually the quiet, nerdy boy starts to identify more and more with his immigrant friends and their hatred and rage towards society – and not least towards themselves. THE AUTHOR Morten Pape (born 1986) grew up in the Urbanplan development in Copenhagen. He is currently studying scriptwriting at the alternative Danish film school Super16. The Plan is his debut novel.

JUSSI ADLER-OLSEN
THE AUTHOR The first five volumes in the crime thriller series about Department Q – The Woman in the Cage, The Pheasant Killers, Message in a Bottle, Journal 64 and The Marco Effect – have made Jussi Adler-Olsen one of the most popular and widely read authors both in Denmark and internationally. Thus far, the series has sold more than two million copies in Denmark alone. The series about Department Q is planned as an ongoing narrative consisting of ten very different individual novels. Together they tell a comprehensive story about the main characters. The series has been sold for publication in over forty countries, and in many places has printed in astronomical numbers. The film rights for the first four novels have been purchased by Zentropa. The first two are out now. The previous books in the series have won The Golden Laurels (De Gyldne Laurbær), The Readers’ Book Prize (Læsernes Bogpris), The Harald Mogensen Award, The Glass Key and The Ripper Award among other accolades, as well as a number of highly prestigious international awards.

the middle of his usual hard-won morning nap, his legs resting on his desk in the basement of the police headquarters in Copenhagen, Carl Mørck, head of Department Q, gets a call from a colleague on the island of Bornholm. ‘I’m very sorry to bother you, but do you have a moment to listen to me?’ Carl is dismissive, however, when he realizes that a new case is being foisted on him, and on the other end the receiver is quietly put down. Only a few hours later, however, the consequences have spiralled out of control, and Carl’s headstrong assistant Rose is even angrier than usual. Under immense pressure, Carl gets
Department Q involved in an extremely tragic seventeen-year-old case, in which a young, funloving woman who disappeared from her school was found hanging in a tree, murdered. The down-to-earth Carl is now facing a difficult and mysterious case, while a skilled manipulator with an iron will protects himself and those around him by all available means, refusing to let anyone or anything get in the way. Throughout the investigation, Rose, Assad, Carl and newcomer Gordon are challenged in all sorts of ways, finding themselves thrust into an uncompromising world of countercultural groups, while old cases and secrets threaten to topple the foursome.

During World War II, two British pilots, James and Bryan, are shot down over Germany. They know that they will be executed if captured. With an enemy patrol in pursuit, they manage to jump aboard a train reserved for senior SS soldiers wounded on the Eastern Front. In a moment of desperation, they throw two patients off the train and take their places, hoping to escape later. Instead, they end up in the Alphabet House, a mental hospital located far behind enemy lines, where German doctors subject their patients to daily rounds of shock treatments and experimental drugs. Their only hope of survival is to fake insanity until the war ends. But soon James and Bryan realize they are not the only ones in the Alphabet House feigning madness. 21

WASHINGTON DEKRETET
08

The police find a number of clues in the Widow’s room that further their investigation into the missing woman, and as the evidence mounts up it becomes clear that the reason for her disappearance lies many decades in the past: something happened when her sons were children, living on the same street as a group of five friends. One of them was the man in the lighthouse, and it emerges that what happened to him and his classmates back then is inextricably linked to the drama unfolding in the present. Logbook from a lifewreck is a fable, a chronicle of our age and a thriller all rolled into one. It is about children who grow up with idiosyncrasies that are

The story and the plot works, the characters are more nuanced than is otherwise seen in most crime novels, and finally this book not only delivers suspense but also entertaining and intelligent social criticism.
[...] merciless descriptions of cruel acts are glaringly and beautifully contrasted by the glimpses of poetic descriptions of the city of Copenhagen.
Axel Steen is a sceptic by the grace of God, he listens to jazz and has an Egon Schieleposter on his wall; he loves and hates with a violent intensity, is full of longing for women and of love to his daughter. He is a bully, but a bully full of cracks (…) With his poetic pen Jesper Stein knows how to make him a real, reflective human being.
Solid psychological depth and a thorough knowledge of the topography of Nørrebro and life as it enfolds itself here do not only make Bye Bye Blackbird a relevant crime novel, it also makes it first class realistic contemporary literature.

arly one morning Niels Bentzon, a hostage negotiator with the Copenhagen police, is taken to Sikringen, a high-security mental hospital where the country’s most dangerous criminals are kept locked up indefinitely. Handcuffed, he's escorted by four officers in riot gear. His wife, astrophysicist Hannah Lund, is leaving the very same day for a much-needed holiday in South America. Niels should have been going with her – they’re supposed to be spending more time together. Instead, he’s going undercover in the nation’s most secure prison. Getting him in there took some doing, and that's only part one of the plan. Part two – the difficult bit – is to solve the murder of Christian Paludan, Sikringen’s chief psychiatrist. Niels owes Paludan his life, and he’ll do whatever it takes to unravel the circumstances behind his apparently inexplicable death.

No one can know that he isn’t an inmate, neither the staff nor the inmates, but they’re the ones that are most difficult to fool. They know he’s coming, and he finds himself fighting with his back to the wall – literally – in a deadly and far-reaching case whose poisonous thread runs all the way from a rented room in Copenhagen six years earlier to a London hotel in 1939 and back to Socrates’ prison cell in 399 BC. Help comes from an unexpected quarter, almost ten thousand kilometres from Niels Bentzon’s lonely cell. But will it arrive too late? T he Born-Again Killer is, like all A. J. Kazinski’s thrillers, both an intelligent riff on the idea of rebirth and a profoundly tense novel about revenge plots so far-reaching that they might, perhaps, be carried over into new lives.

even artists and scientists are invited on an all-expenses-paid retreat on the uninhabited island by a mysterious benefactor. They are looking forward to spending a peaceful month far from civilisation, but get more than they bargained for when they find themselves living in a glass house cut off from all communication with the outside world, and without any possibility of getting off the island. Is there a murderer in their midst? And who will be the next victim? It soon emerges that their life stories and deepest secrets are closely interwoven with each other, and a broader picture of obsession, exploitation and personal responsibility begins to take shape. shape Where nothing stops the wind is a contemporary thriller inspired by classic mysteries, and a portrait of seven very different people who are forced to face traumas they have long repressed.

THE BOY WHO VANISHED A suspense novel by Christian Mørk
M
artin, 12 years old, hides in the tall grass by his Vermont home, drawing everything he sees. When someone burns the house down with his mom inside, Martin vanishes, too. Everyone thinks he's dead. Gordon, Martin's uncle, finds his drawings near the ruins:
The Boy Who Vanished exists in the same universe as True Detective, in which the most frightening is what is gradually uncovered, rather than gruesome violence. It's a thriller with supernatural overtones, but told in a way that makes the ghosts seem like flesh-and-blood, with human desires. These living ghosts aren't zombies, but look and feel normal.
Martin has drawn a skinny man waving from the woods. Martin's dad, Harold, has been sketching the same image. When a road crew is attacked by a thin man looking like Martin's drawings, Harold joins Gordon, and the clues lead to a small town in the forest: Its inhabitants were killed in a church fire in 1861, but they prayed so hard that ever since, they come to life only while the sun shines on them, and return to the dirt at night. Since then, they have attacked anyone coming too close – including Harold and Gordon, who work on building roads, too. Martin is alive, they find. But without knowing what he was doing, he led the ghosts to burn down his own home. Now he hides from his dad. The hidden town is split in two: one group wants peace with the living and the other wants a war with our modern world. Gordon and Harold must rescue Martin and bring peace between our world and the town. They succeed, in the end. But at a terrible price.

THE AUTHOR Christian Mørk was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He moved to Vermont at 21. He's worked as a reporter for The New York Times and Variety and as a film executive at Warner Bros. Pictures on films like Devil's Advocate, Outbreak, and Michael Collins. He's written 8 previous novels, notably Darling Jim, which sold in more than 20 countries. He lives in Brooklyn, New York, far from the people hiding behind the trees.
WHY ARE YOU SO DRAWN TO THE FARAWAY STATE OF VERMONT? We lived primitively, with no internet. In winter, snow often cut off the roads. This meant everyone had to trust the others to make our small community work. This made me want to write a story of a rural town where survival depends on each member's abiding by the rules and taking their violent punishment if they break them. Vermont is the perfect place to imagine what would happen if these people felt threatened by the outside world.
C
hristian Mørk went to college in the American state of Vermont where this story takes place. The school lay in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by woods and ancient revolutionary war cemeteries with sunken headstones. A perfect setting for ghost stories.
YOUR VILLAINS AREN'T WRITTEN AS SIMPLY EVIL. WHY NOT? As the Rolling Stones once suggested, you must have sympathy for the devil, otherwise it gets boring to read. Each of my books has had a worthy antagonist in it. Who always drives the narrative forward in a suspense story: Is it the hero? No, it's the villain. That role cannot be a mustache-twirling cliché. In The Boy Who Vanished, each villain has an inner moral code that makes as much sense to him as it must to the hero – and to us.
19
DO YOU CONSTRUCT A STORY USING THE PLOT OR THE CHARACTERS? Always around the characters, to start. Otherwise, the surrounding action becomes a loud, empty shell, which you cannot easily insert a living character into afterwards. I actually developed the inner life of The Boy Who Vanished 15 years ago: I wrote a screenplay where two brothers must seek in the forest for something meaning life or death for them both. Not long ago I revisited Vermont and saw the old graveyards hiding behind tall grass and trees, and I thought: what if I rewrite the whole thing and change the brothers' goal? And only then did I invent both the vanished boy and the villains in the woods. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE PAST THAT FASCINATES YOU SO MUCH? That it isn't over. It's all around us, still. Each time I walked around the headstones up on the old mountain, I never felt that the people underneath belonged in the past, before America was even born. I felt them around me. In several of my previous books, I've used the past as a backdrop to the point where it became an invisible, living character. In The Boy Who Vanished, the past is made more living and insistent than ever. It refuses to die. It reaches out from the forest. I don't dare to do anything but listen to what it wants.

up remarkably quickly, and in the blink of an eye the war veteran, under intense pressure, has been sucked into investigating a string of mysterious murders – murders that seemingly only have one thing in common: hanged dogs… The unorthodox intelligence agent Margrethe Franck assists Oxen. Deliberate omissions of the truth and a general mistrust make their partnership extremely difficult, but gradually they learn to work together on the hunt for the murderers, even as the motive for the crimes remains obscure. Hangdogs is the first volume in a new series featuring the traumatised war veteran Niels Oxen. The first three volumes in the series have individual storylines, but are tied together by an overarching plot: Oxen’s struggle for rehabilitation, and his battle with a secretive and powerful elite that has roots stretching all the way back to the Danes Court, the medieval Danish parliament.

She establishes herself as a ghostwriter for popular but burned-out authors, also writing about her own childhood memories, which were anything but picture-perfect. When she gets pregnant, she doesn’t tell the baby’s father. Instead she moves to a slightly shabby part of town full of colourful characters, where she grows especially close to Mr Velázquez, a transvestite who becomes a kind of one-stop-shop – mum, dad, grandma and granddad – for her and her daughter Nadia. After ten years in New York she receives a packet of letters from her now dead mother, who wrote them to her over the years but never sent them. A Year of Funerals is about being homeless in your own family, about finding yourself in a new community and putting an end to running away from life. It is a wide-ranging

hen Beate wakes up in the morning, she turns towards the empty space in bed beside her, slowly remembering that Thomas is really dead. Her sense of loss floods back, hitting her so hard that she’s almost pinned to the mattress. She pulls herself together before she goes into the office and focuses on her job as a defence lawyer. Her close friend Monica is a rather unusual priest, outspoken and with a no-nonsense approach to the parishioners who seek her advice. Monica travels to Guatemala, where she meets a mafioso, a Guatemalan teenage girl who grew up in a children’s home, and a young pot dealer whom Beate also encounters in her capacity as a lawyer. The book follows the two women as they weave in and out of people’s lives, grappling with issues of faith, justice, vigilantism, sorrow, infatuation, forgiveness of murder and – greatest of all – love.

Making the Cut
A Danish psychiatrist arrives in Småland, Sweden, to teach a summer course, but when he wakes up the next morning, there is a white envelope on the doorstep of his rented house. It contains a photograph of a serial killer who took his own life while under the psychiatrist’s care twenty years prior. The following morning a woman is found murdered. What looks like an ideal case for the Danish profiler Robert Strand quickly develops into a nightmare, as it turns out that he only has five days to prevent the serial killer’s copycat from striking again. This is Eva Maria Fredensborg’s debut.
Was it loneliness that drove a female translator to take her own life, or did someone literally guide her hand? There’s a strange post-it note on the fridge, a neighbour who called early in the morning, and a bracelet that doesn’t fit with her smock and wellington boots. Asta Qvist is convinced that Hannah Lundgren did not commit suicide, and when Robert Strand is assigned to the case, it turns out that Asta has good reason to doubt the police’s findings. This is the second book in the series featuring Asta Qvist and Robert Strand.

Joachim Rahn, a premier-league football player is found dead; executed with a single shot to the forehead. The police suspect the victim’s best friend and teammate Alexander Karlsen, who disappeared immediately after the murder of Joachim as he hindered Alexander’s opportunities to sign with a major foreign club and has apparently stolen Alexander’s girlfriend. The case has personal consequences for the investigators, who all have a vested interest in solving it. Especially Carl Pedersen, as he has coached both the suspect and the victim, who was once good friends with his son Emil. The murder leads the police down a complex trail of organized crime, bikers, steroids, hippies and match-fixing.
A masterful plot and a string of interesting characters. There are no quiet passages in the book, it is constantly evolving, keeping pace and power. And well written in a simple, unaffected manner. Christian VII was not yet seventeen when he ascended the throne in 1766. Behind him lay an upbringing marred by cruelty and abuse, while ahead lay life as the absolute ruler of a complex kingdom. His greatest challenge was to keep a cool head in a court riven by power struggles, intrigues and animosity. In the space of a few short years, a series of dramatic events changed the course of the young king’s life, the affair between Queen Caroline Mathilde and the royal physician Struensee being only one of them.

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF THE MAN WHO STOLE THE GOLDEN HORNS The Golden Horns were stolen in 1802 and melted down. But who was the man who, out of pure greed, cynically destroyed this unique relic of the past? His name was Niels Heydenreich, and he was the son of an alcoholic parish clerk in Jutland. The family’s lot worsened after his parents got divorced: his mother was heavily in debt, and had to take her children and move to another part of the country. Trying to save his family, Niels began to print fake banknotes, but was caught and thrown into jail in Christianshavn, a district of Copenhagen. Here he taught himself to work with gold, and after being released he set up shop as a goldsmith, but once again things began to go wrong for him. Ulrik Langen’s The Thief is a gripping tale of gold, pawnbrokers, prisons, counterfeiters, inventors, honour, self-obsession and
much more. Depicting the most famous thief in Danish history, it traces a unique story set during Copenhagen’s Golden Age, written by one of Denmark’s best-known, most authoritative and popular contemporary historians.

THE AUTHOR
ll Danish people know Lars von Trier. At least, they think they do: he is Denmark's most famous and infamous artist, with his phobias, camper van and almost ritualised provocations. In the world at large he is admired as an original filmmaker, while in Denmark he is notorious as a professional neurotic. As for the man himself, he says he's the world's greatest film director. For the first time, Lars von Trier talks in detail about his life, his fears, his films and his thoughts. For the best part of a year, Politiken journalist Nils Thorsen shadowed and interviewed the director and his friends, family and colleagues, bringing us closer to him than ever before.
Nils Thorsen is a journalist at the Danish national newspaper Politiken, where he has become well respected for his biographical interviews, among other pieces. He has twice been nominated for the Cavling Prize for his series of interviews: in 1999 for the series Angels and Demons (Engle og DĂŚmoner) and in 2003 for To: On Becoming and Being (Til: Om at blive og vĂŚre). He is the author of a number of books, including the critically praised collection of interviews RoundAbout (OmVeje) and, in 2010, The Genius: Lars von Trier's Life, Films and Phobias (Geniet: Lars von Triers liv, film og fobier).

Leading from the Front As a leader, you need to have the courage – especially at difficult moments – to put yourself on the front lines, choose a way forward and say, 'Follow me!'
SPECIFICATIONS: 176 pages, September 2015 RIGHTS: All rights available
Kim Kristensen has been in the most demanding situations a leader can experience. As an officer, he led Danish soldiers into battle many times, where decision-making is literally a matter of life and death. Since then he has applied his leadership experience to the worlds of industry, local government, diplomacy and the Danish Royal Household, where today he is the Master of Ceremonies. The power of leading by example is clear and compelling, writes Kim Kristensen. You have to lead from the front. You have to go first, inspiring trust and confidence in your staff, so that they know you'll always be there – not just when the going's good, but also when things are at their worst. Building on his own experiences, Kristensen offers a variety of effective tools to create a unique strategy, with a constant focus on hard graft and the will to put together a dream-team. This is fundamental to world-class leadership. The book also lambasts Rambo-style leadership and harsh discipline. 'Love your employees' is his provocative message. In the end, they are the ones who have to get things done, and only when they realise you care about them will they be willing to follow you through fire and water. THE AUTHOR Kim Kristensen (born 1964) is Master of Ceremonies at the Royal Danish Court. He has previously served as adjutant for Her Majesty the Queen, and has led military operations in Croatia (1995) and Kosovo (2005). In 2007 he was promoted to the rank of colonel, and put in charge of Danish forces in Afghanistan. Kim Kristensen was chosen as Leader of the Year in 2009 by the Danish Association of Managers and Executives, and he holds lectures on leadership around the world.

THE DANISH WEREWOLVES A DANISH POLICEMAN INVESTIGATES A LITTLE-KNOWN PIECE OF HISTORY DURING THE OCCUPATION, UNCOVERING A STORY OF WICKEDNESS AND TREASON. The Danish Werewolves is the tale of Inspector Erland Leth Pedersen, a retired Copenhagen policeman, who made an unusual discovery in a dusty attic at the Copenhagen Police Headquarters one early summer’s day in 2012. In the attic he found a package, the contents of which led him to an under-explored corner of the Second World War – the story of the Danish Werewolves.

Their purpose was to further the cause of Nazism using violence, terror and propaganda, continuing even if Germany was defeated.
This is the dramatic account of a group of traitors who, in 1944 and 1945, attempted to help the so-called ‘Werewolf

" A Danish inspector has been digging through both earth and archives seeking new information on the Danish Werewolves, who were preparing to commit terrorist attacks in the wake of the Occupation. The result is a comprehensive and well-written book on everything we were lucky enough to avoid. Inspector Erland Leth Pedersen has been hard at work, digging through the archives and – quite literally – the soil, detailing the Werewolves’ many hidden stashes in the book. His excellent account tells the whole story, including images and descriptions of the Danish terrorists, several of whom were executed in 1945. No one is forgotten – not Henning Brøndum, for instance, whose gang was behind a whole string of murders. He wears a characteristically broad smile in nearly all the pictures of him in this rogues’ gallery."
"[Erland Leth Pedersen], a self-described amateur historian, offers a colourful account of the hunt for the Danish Werewolves, arguing convincingly that there genuinely was a network of Werewolves, and that they buried a large number of weapons caches. But first and foremost the book should be read as an entertaining description of the hunt for the old Nazis’ network."

RUM BOOK R
umbook was written by two rum nerds who tell you everything worth knowing about this new favourite drink. It is aimed not only at beginners, but also at seasoned rum-drinkers, and it’s the book the writers themselves wish they could have read when they were first getting interested in the golden liquor. The days when rum was associated exclusively with rum-and-coke or other such dubious beverages are long gone. Today, rum is considered a premium spirit, on an equal footing with whisky and cognac. This book therefore focuses on aged rum, which is drunk neat. It features a general introduction to rum, as well as the authors' take on forty different kinds of aged rum, all of which are highly recommended, guiding the reader through all the important rum-producing countries, styles and types of rum. In addition to a fascinating historical account, the book includes a description of the production process, with sections on sugar cane, fermentation, distillation, aging, blending and the different styles of rum.

The White Buses
IN
1944, activists in occupied Norway and Denmark realized that their compatriots held in Nazi concentration camps were facing extermination as the Allies closed in on Germany. Information was leaked that Hitler had issued orders for all prisoners to be executed and the concentration camps destroyed before Allied troops could seize them. Appalled by this prospect, activists sought ways to identify and eventually evacuate Scandinavian prisoners from the camps. Despite orders from the Allied Supreme Command in September 1944 that no civilian prisoners held in Germany were to be released before Allied forces had secured the entire country and established
firm control, groups of civilian activists from Norway and Denmark continued their push to reach some kind of understanding with the Nazi leadership over a gradual release of prisoners. Eventually, through a concerted effort, a major rescue operation building on these initiatives was planned and launched in February and March of 1945 by the Swedish Red Cross, under the leadership of Count Folke Bernadotte. It was a unique humanitarian operation. Over the course of a few weeks, volunteers driving hundreds of white buses through the scattered roads of the collapsing Third Reich managed to rescue more than 10,000 prisoners. The White Buses traces the origins of this fascinating operation and reveals
the details of the diplomacy that made it possible. Based almost exclusively on contemporary accounts, the book offers a revealing insight into the SS's leadership during the final months, weeks and days of Nazi Germany. Richly documented and featuring firsthand accounts from the activists who negotiated with leading Nazis and visited the concentration camps to secure the release of prisoners, the story is both compelling and moving. The White Buses is fully illustrated with contemporary photographs documenting the operation and its main participants.
