ON THE COVER: Truax Family including Mrs. Lisa Truax (2021 NAYS Parent of the Year)

Lisa Truax

NAYS Youth Sports Parent of the Year (2021, October 25). National Alliance for Youth Sports. https://nays.org/ blog/lisa-truax-nays-youth-sports-parent-of-the-year/ Children participating in sports programs at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam have been enjoying terrific experiences season after season. And Lisa Truax is a big reason why. This mom of two exemplifies what youth sports parenting is all about. Along with supporting her son and daughter, she loves volunteering countless hours to the youth sports programs on base and seeing all the kids being active, learning new skills, making friends, and having fun.

She assists coaches with practices and is an incredibly valuable resource for helping ensure that game days run smoothly. Plus, when coaches are called away for duty she steps up and runs the team’s practices, recalling her days as a young athlete while leading players through fun-filled drills. “I did play sports as a kid,” she says. “I first started playing baseball because that was the only sport that was offered, and then softball. I played basketball, I ran track and basketball was my favorite sport.” Lisa and her husband Michael got their kids into sports early, understanding how valuable they are in helping youth develop key life skills. Their children have participated in basketball, soccer, baseball and cheerleading.

It’s all these qualities, among many others, that led to her being named this year’s recipient of the NAYS Youth Sports Parent of the Year award. Truax stood out among all the nominations submitted by organizations around the country, and U.S. military bases worldwide. Nominations are reviewed for how well the nominee exemplifies the NAYS Code of Ethics for Parents, founded on tenets like placing the emotional and physical well-being of children ahead of a personal desire to win, encouraging a playing environment of good sportsmanship and supporting the coaches and officials of the program.

“What makes me want to give so much time is not just for my kids but all the other kids, too,” Truax says. “Seeing them smile and happy, learning new things, and just being there for them and teaching them. Also helping them learn that it’s okay to lose, it’s okay to be different, it’s okay to want to learn new things, and it’s okay to just be you and have fun and smile.” STEPPING UP

Caring and tireless, Truax steps up and delivers whatever is needed to help ensure positive experiences for all the participants and their families.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

Through the years there have been many memorable moments on the fields and courts. “My son tried out for pitcher and he was extremely scared and said he couldn’t do it and when he did, he was amazing at it,” she shared. “He just needed that little courage and he was just great at it. And after that he came to me and he cried he was so happy.” Humble and hardworking, Truax models good sportsmanship at all times, as she is well-known throughout the community for encouraging all teams while providing endless support to parents and league staff any way she can. Truax’s passion for helping ensure that all kids have rewarding experiences in sports is truly inspiring, and her positive approach in everything she does is one to be embraced and emulated. “My advice for other parents being in sports, or watching their kids be in sports, is just be there for your kids,” she says. “Listen to them. And just be happy with them. They’re going to get discouraged, so have a positive outlook and always turn something into a positive.”

COMMEMORATION

MCCOOL ELEMENTARY MIDDLE SCHOOL COMMEMORATED THEIR SCHOOL'S NAMESAKE Submitted by Mr. Jonathan Blaylock, McCool School Teacher Students and teachers at McCool Elementary Middle School commemorated their school's namesake by having a Spirit week in September. On September 23rd, in honor of Commander McCool's birthday, students and teachers dressed as astronauts or wore something related to space, the planets or Star Wars. “We, the students and teachers, will always remember Commander McCool's hard work and service to our country, especially on his last mission on the Space Shuttle Columbia."

ANDERSEN MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS LEARN FROM AN AUTHOR Submitted by Dr. Tyais Dial, School Principal Andersen Middle School

ANDERSEN MIDDLE SCHOOL CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS Submitted by Dr. Tyais Dial, Andersen Middle School Principal AMS again partnered with the Commissary on a project to make Christmas ornaments to hang in the commissary for the month of December. The school advisory classes worked hard in November to get this task accomplished. Pictured here are the first place (Mr. White’s Advisory Class) and second place (Ms. Williams’s Advisory Class) winners who together, made a total of 460 ornaments out of recycled materials alone.

In October (on two separate Saturdays), two groups of AMS students came to the school information center to participate in a “watch party”, in which they watched a presentation by Rick Riordan, the author of the very popular Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series. The viewing party was hosted by the school’s Information Specialist, Jim Rhodes. The students worked on activity sheets and played a Jeopardy style trivia game based on the Percy Jackson books before watching the interview with Rick Riordan. The winner of Jeopardy game received a “hundred dollar bill”! During the presentation the students learned about Mr. Riordan’s writing techniques, his start as an author, his next book, and the possibility of a Percy Jackson TV series!

HOMESCHOOL TIPS

Written by Andrea Dodd, Homeschool Parent and Andersen Homeschool Point of Contact. Email: homeschoolgu@gmail.com • Be flexible when it comes to curriculum. Just because a curriculum works for one child does not mean it will work for all. Find what works best for YOUR child. • Don't stick to the books. Go out and have fun learning. If you are learning about nature, go outside and experience nature. Take a day and go to the zoo, go to a park, bake cookies, or do something that your family enjoys. Education does not have to be done at a desk or in a classroom. Children learn from everything we do. Make learning memorable. • Don't try to recreate "school". Public school hours are as long as they are to allow for breaks, classroom transition, and other things that take up time outside of learning. • You are enough. Do not doubt your ability to homeschool. At times it may get difficult, but you will get past those times. Homeschooling will be rewarding experience for both you and your child. You chose to homeschool for a reason.

Hobbies: I Enjoy playing sports. (Softball, Rugby, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer) I love coaching and playing with the teams I meet, and creating a bond that helps the players and myself grow and love the game even more! Sports Coached: T-ball, Soccer, Softball, and Volleyball. Favorite Motivational Quote:

START SMART PROGRAMS

The Start Smart program is a 6 week parent and child group activity which performs motor skill tasks that gradually build confidence in children while they are having fun at the same time. At the end of 6 weeks, all youth were rewarded with a medal and certificate for their hard work!

FALL YOUTH SOCCER LEAGUE

The Andersen AFB Youth Sports and Fitness Program conducted a 10 week league along with the Naval Base Guam youth sports program. All youth were put in various age groups to include U6, U8, U10 and U12. At the last week of the season, all youth were given medals for all their hard work.

“Don’t Let The Fear of Striking out Keep You From Playing The Game.” What do you enjoy about coaching youth sports: I enjoy seeing the growth the children have in the sport and in themselves. There is so much love that goes into the sport but behind that hard work and dedication that I see in the kids every time they practice and play. They bring me joy and make coaching fun when I go out and see them smile and working hard each practice and game. Plus when I hear my players call me Coach it’s an honor every time and makes me proud to be their Coach! 15
