NATIONAL SCHOOL BUS SAFETY WEEK Submitted by Mr. JJ Calhoun, Management & Program Analyst DoDEA Pacific West Community Superintendent Office - Guam 4

Observed annually during the third full week of October each year, National School Bus Safety Week is an active and evolving public education program and an excellent way for parents, students, school administrators, teachers, motorists, school bus drivers, and our other DoDEA stakeholders to join forces and address the importance of school bus safety. While the school bus is and remains one of the safest ways for students to get to and from school, there are now added precautions in place to support a safe and

healthy environment on the school bus due to COVID-19. These include, but are not limited to, the wearing of masks, the use of hand sanitizer, and open/cracked windows to improve the air circulation within the school bus. National School Bus Safety week is an ideal time to reinforce DoDEA’s school bus safety rules with our student bus riders and show your appreciation to your school bus driver and staff for their hard work and professionalism.

DID YOU KNOW?

School transition and deployment support is a military readiness and retention issue. The military benefits from having forces who are able to focus on their duties, whether ashore or deployed. • Military families move their children an average of every 2.9 years. • Children of military personnel attend up to nine different schools by graduation. • Military families are reluctant to disrupt high school youth in their senior year. • Deployments can impact educational outcomes of children. • Many families decide to “separate geographically” to keep children in their current school. Military and Family Life Counselors (MFLC) Child and Youth Behavioral (CYB) Program Compiled by School Liaison Do you or your child need a little extra support due to moving to a new location, deployment or reunion adjustments, or daily life issues? Military and Family Life Counselors (MFLC) are available to support you and your children. Contact the Child and Youth Programs (CYP) or the DoDEA Guam School office during the school year to ask to speak with the Military and Family Life Counselor. Military and Family Life Counselors (MFLCs) are licensed professionals with Master’s Degree or higher who provide shortterm, non-medical, problem solving support to military children and families. MFLCs understand the issues military children and families face and can be especially helpful during challenging periods, including deployments and PCS moves. Services are available at no cost and augment existing military support services. Services are private and conversations stay between the child and the MFLC or between the parent and the MFLC. The only exceptions to this rule are cases of domestic violence, abuse, and suicidal or homicidal issues. TOPICS COVERED • School Adjustment • Deployment and Separation • Reunion adjustment • Sibling and parent – child communication

DODEA GUAM HIGH SCHOOL NJROTC

REMEMBRANCE–TWENTY YEARS SINCE 9/11 Written by Guam High School NJROTC Cadet Pimrapat Paisarn

On Tuesday September 11, 2001, at 8:46 AM Eastern standard time, the tragic incident which consisted of American citizens, terrorists, and buildings in New York city had come to a catastrophic ending, killing 2,996 people and breaking the bonds between the Twin towers along with the many souls inside those buildings. It has now been twenty years since this tragic event has happened. Although it has been twenty years since this horrendous event happened, it has been a painful and sorrowful time for others who have lost their mothers, fathers, husbands, spouses, and children. Today, in honoring all of these souls that have suffered both today

and on the day of the disastrous event, the NJROTC program along with Guam High School have created a ceremony honoring the loss of those who have passed away in the unfortunate incident along with all the scars that are never to be healed of those who lost their loved ones forever. Therefore, staff members will raise the American flag in honor to show pride to our country and in honor of those who have passed away. And in the remembrance we will take the time to pray for all the souls hoping that they will rest in peace, safe and sound.

Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) schools offer eligible homeschooled children the opportunity to take one or more classes and/or to use or receive “auxiliary services”. However, homeschoolers must meet the same eligibility requirements as dependents enrolled in the DoDEA schools. Auxiliary services include the use of academic resources (including scheduled standardized tests, etc.), access to the library (information center), after-hours use of school facilities, participation in music, sports, and other extracurricular and interscholastic activities. • Read DODEA Administrative Instruction 1375.01 HomeSchool-Students April 10, 2018. www.dodea.edu/Offices/ PolicyAndLegislation/upload/DoDEA-AI-1375-01-Home-SchoolStudents-Change-1.pdf • Bring a copy of the military sponsor’s orders (and page 2 for Navy) and the dependent’s proof of identity such as birth certificate, passport, DoD identification card to the school to establish eligibility. • Contact the DoDEA School Office in your area to register to take classes, participate in sports, music and to ask about other school resources and activities. To inquire about Dual Credit Enrollment, contact the school guidance counselor. FMI view www.dodea.edu/Pacific/Schools/index.cfm, call (area code 671) or Facebook. Naval Base Guam Fleet and Family Support Center Family Advocacy Program staff take part in the Wrap-Up Domestic Violence Awareness Month Wave.

FLEET AND FAMILY SUPPORT CENTER Submitted by Dolores Naputi, Naval Base Guam Fleet and Family Support Center Family Advocacy Program Educator Domestic abuse is a worldwide epidemic that affects people of all races, nationalities, sexes, ages and socioeconomic backgrounds. Sadly, the U.S. military is not excluded from this

global crisis. The Navy remains committed to using its best efforts to eliminate domestic abuse and to break the cycle of violence in military families. The Navy Family Advocacy Program, or FAP, is identified as the program to facilitate a community response to domestic violence.

October is nationally recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, or DVAM. Each year, the Department of Defense provides a theme, used across all service branches, that directs the planning of awareness and prevention activities throughout the month. The theme for DVAM 2021 is “United to End Domestic Abuse”. This year’s campaign is designed to promote the idea that preventing domestic abuse is a shared community responsibility that starts with a message of support for victims and reminds victims that help is always available.
