T h e C i t y o f M o n t g o m e r y Wo r k i n g fo r Yo u On March 12-13, the City of Montgomery’s Development Department led the Madison Avenue Gateway Charrette. The Development Department teamed with Dover Kohl and Partners, who have created several plans for Montgomery areas, to examine the public and privately owned areas along Madison Avenue from North Ripley Street to Vonora Street. The goal of the charrette was to focus on improving assets in the community: assets such as Paterson Field, Cramton Bowl, Sportsplex (under construction), New Municipal Court (planning stage), the Learning Arts Armory, the Curb Market, St. John AME Church, and the potential to promote construction of supporting land uses to these assets. During the two day charrette, the team examined the area, taking an inventory of structures and their uses, as well as the land between the buildings. On Monday night, there was a opening presentation and hands-on session in which the public was invited to give input by drawing on maps and by discussing openly with each other and the designers. During the two days, the team of designers met with over a dozen stakeholders in the area to discuss the future of the corridor. These meetings provided 5 big ideas: • Make it greener: street trees, trail, small park • Continue to support & improve existing assets: Paterson Field, Montgomery Curb Market, Armory Learning Arts Center, other businesses • Provide multiple transportation options: inviting sidewalks, trail connection, possible streetcar • Create gateway feel: create a sense of arrival, two-sided main street, signage, branding • Unleash private investment: government partnership, market plan to developers These ideas were consolidated into an illustrative plan that showed how new buildings or renovations to existing ones could conform to urban form, providing an enjoyable pedestrian environment and viable commercial potential. Improving the street section will increase the appearance of the gateway to motorists and pedestrians.

The 2012 Biscuits Baseball season is cooking up some new fun! There are many new features at Riverwalk Stadium to be welcomed this year, highlighted by the addition of a state-of-theart video board and ribbon board which will revolutionize the fan experience. The video board is one of the biggest in all of minor league baseball, and the ribbon board is the only one in the Southern League. The stadium will also include a closed circuit TV-system, Video Board as seen from the stands. where 4 new cameras will allow the game to be broadcasted to the suites, the Club Car Bar and the Biscuit Basket team store. The boards were installed by Daktronics, which has outfitted 26 of 30 major league teams. The Biscuits will open up the 2012 season on Sunday, April 15th, at 5:35. Working out is a lot more than getting on a machine and pressing start, or lifting weights up and down, especially if you would like to see results.
in a routine so that you get bored and quit exercising altogether. If you don’t know what to do, ask for help. You can hire a personal trainer, ask the fitness trainer at your gym, or join a class. People are there to help you reach your goals. All you have to do is find that right person, ask for help, and make it happen.
When I was at camp the other day, I was watching Resolution Campers push themselves. I was thinking, when is it time to push yourself out of your comfort zone once you’ve built more endurance and strength than you could have expected in such a small time?
How to keep yourself from going through the motions? I have said it before and I will say it again and this probably won’t be the last time either.
It’s not realistic to expect to continuously lose, tone, and tighten doing the same routine, in the same manner, same amount of weight, and the same amount of repetitions. Not to say that you are not working out hard, but I find myself at times in the gym going through the same routine over and over again. Nothing is wrong with that, but if you’re striving to change your physique, you MUST stop exercising comfortably, and stop “Going Through The Motions.”
You have to stop and ask yourself, “What do I need to do to get the results that I want?” Make small goals to help you reach your ultimate goal. Small goals keep you motivated and focused at the same time. Too many times I have seen people with an ultimate goal, but have any small goals to help them get there. The important thing is not to get complacent. Always strive to do better, and you will never be just “going through the motions.”
If you want to push yourself to a higher level of fitness, it’s beneficial to exercise with one or more individuals that are on a higher fitness level than you. I understand that it’s difficult to get your mind focused to push hard every single day. If you TRY to run faster within your sprints, long distance run, faster pace walk, do two more push ups or pull ups, you would get much more satisfaction. You will know that you pushed yourself to do more, and it’s all about trying to push yourself out of a comfortable state of exercise.
What do you do if you find yourself “going through the motions?” You go work out and realize that you can complete your workout with your eyes closed. You know your way through out the gym without thinking, and then wonder why you can’t see results. There’s nothing wrong with being familiar with the gym or your workout, it is great. However, in order to progress to the next level, you have shake it up. What do I mean by shake it up? It means to get out of your comfort zone and try something different. Different is good. You never want to get stuck 10

Last November, my car was hit by an eighteen-wheeler. I was in the hospital for most of December and January, where I went through dozens of tests and procedures. During this time, my eyesight had worsened to the point of being legally blind. Medical doctors were unsure whether this was a reaction to all the testing or injuries from the accident, and it was then I was referred to Primary Eyecare, where I saw Dr. Fredrick Jackson. Back in 2004, a group of local triathletes organized to start the Montgomery Multisport website and club. On September 1st, 2010, five club members opened the doors of Montgomery Multisport, the Triathlon Store. By March 2011, our store expansion allowed us to deepen our investment in the running community, while adding new diagnostic equipment and four additional shoe manufacturers. Currently the club has over 200 members, a masters swim group, and various racing subteams.

Smiles of All Styles I’m the youngest of three children. My brother, Robert, and my sister, Jane, both live in the bay area of California with their families. My parents, both in their 70’s, live in Washington state. Being so far away, its always a very special occasion to see them. Last week, my mother and father came to visit for a few days. It was a great time and I enjoyed being with them.
The beautiful thing about family is that for better or worse there is nobody else we’ve known so well for so long. My mother always wakes up the earliest, makes breakfast and sips tea while she waits for the others to stumble into the dining room. Conversations begin and somewhere somehow the first smile breaks through the heaviness of waking. The first morning they were there, I dutifully stumbled into the dining room and was met with the toothless grin of my father. My mother, seeing that he’d forgotten his dentures and, having not put in her own, smiled her own smile with one tooth missing 14
in the front. I laughed, then she laughed, then he joined in too. Two generations of people, one generation with teeth. I remember my parents when they had all of their own teeth. Nothing’s changed. Just the shape of their smile. Every day I talk to people who, for one reason or another, have lost some or all of their teeth. To them, it’s debilitating. Their ability to eat, speak and smile proudly is diminished. To many, its a symbol of their vibrance and wellness. Having a full set of healthy shiny teeth is important not only for our physical well being, but for our emotional and social well being as well. Today’s dentistry allows us not only to keep our teeth longer, but also gives us options to replace missing teeth that can function well and look just as good as natural teeth. Today, there are three good options to replace the absentees: 1. Removeable full or partial dentures. The first known denture was made back in 700BC. Although the materials and construction of custom dentures have progressed tremendously (thankfully!), the basic look has not changed very much from some of the earliest wooden dentures traced back to the Japanese in the 1500s. They’ve been around for a long time and have served millions of people well. Today, the benefit of full or partial dentures is still very available. It is the most economical way to replace missing teeth and although we don’t use wood, ivory or human and animal teeth anymore, the modern denture looks good, is strong and functions well.
2. Fixed bridges. The same society, the Etruscans, who made the first known denture in 700BC were known to create the first dental bridge around the same time. Using gold wire, they weaved in human teeth into the spaces where teeth were missing. Today, a dental bridge can replace a missing tooth by preparing the teeth on either side of the missing tooth for crowns which secures a pontic or dummy tooth in between them that fits into the toothless area. This is not meant to come out of your mouth like a removeable partial denture. Dental bridges can last for decades and with today’s materials, they look and feel very close to a natural tooth. 3. Dental implants. Over the last few decades, dental implant technology has become the best way to replace missing teeth. The first known implant was found by archeologists in the jaw of a Mayan woman from around 600BC. It was made of pieces of shell that was shaped to resemble a tooth. In the late 1900s, Dr. Branemark, an orthopedic surgeon discovered by accident that titanium and bone love each other and they fuse together solidly. He called his discovery osseointegration. Other materials were tried with less success including gold, silver and even human teeth from donors. By the mid 1980’s and after hundreds of scientific tests, titanium implants were proven to be a phenomenal success in replacing teeth. In the years since, the titanium implant has evolved into a simple one or two piece design that has made replacing teeth quick, simple and painless.
Sights to See When I was in college, I went over the handlebars of my mountain bike. I lost four of my front teeth in the accident and wore a denture for four years until I was a junior in dental school; then I got dental implants myself. Today my implants are still doing well even though the technology has evolved so much in the fifteen years since mine were placed. The long-term success rate of a dental implant surpasses any other dental option and there is no other way to replace a missing tooth that more closely looks, functions and feels like ones we were created with. All of the options that we’ve discussed here have their benefits and challenges and the best option for you may be one or a combination of these. Talk to your dentist about which option is best for you.
That’s what my parents did. Both of them wear removeable dentures now. Both of them talked to our old family dentist back in Washington state and sometime this summer, my mother and father will both have dental implants. I’ve got to admit, I’m going to miss the little black squares in their smiles in the morning. I’d love for you to meet them someday, but this week they’re all mine. Toothless grins and all. He has worked with numerous dentists and specialists and has lectured in communities on the subject of dental care throughout the United States. Gigi’s Cupcakes
Jennifer and Patrick Cooper are the owners of two locations of Gigi’s Cupcakes, which are located in Auburn and in Montgomery. Before opening Gigi’s, Jennifer was a seventh grade science teacher in her hometown of Memphis, Tennessee; while, Patrick, who is from Fort Payne, Alabama, worked in a textile mill. The mill was a family business of twenty-six years, and Patrick worked his way up from purchasing to upper management. The couple, who are both graduates of Auburn University, met in college and was married in August of 2005. Patrick’s family mill closed in June of 2009, and he was on the hunt for a job. He decided to run his own business and happened to come across Gigi’s home store in Nashville and later came across a franchise in Chattanooga. In November 2010, the Coopers had their first baby. The Coopers met with Gigi’s in December 2010, and then moved to Auburn in March 2010. By August 2010, the Coopers opened their first Gigi’s franchise in Auburn, Alabama. The Montgomery location opened in December 2011 and the business has been booming since day one. When the Auburn store was just getting off the ground, Jennifer spent all day in the kitchen. Now, she is the head of personnel and marketing. Patrick does all the bookkeeping and takes care of the financial end. However, that doesn’t mean he won’t grab a whisk and get down to business! Gigi’s offers a wide variety of delectable creations from Margarita inspired cupcakes to Hot Fudge Sundae flavored cupcakes. Of course, more traditional cupcakes are available as well including the Wedding Cake, the Midnight Magic, and the Carrot Cake. The spring and summer menus are available now. Ordering is as simple as a few clicks or a quick visit to their store. By liking Gigi’s on Facebook, you get a heads up about specials too! The Shelton Family
Finding Hope in their Heartbreak by Halee Harrelson
On January 14th, 2000, Brian & Carolyn Shelton and their two sons, Hunter and Hudson, welcomed a new addition to their family. Delaney Elizabeth Shelton was born a beautiful, inquisitive, and playful child. She was a girl who loved Jesus, her preschool, her friends, and especially her family. When Delaney was 4 years old, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor: gemistocytic astrocytoma. The tumor was so rare, there was only one other known case at the time in Europe. The Shelton’s world was on the verge of collapse. On May 12th, eight days after the diagnosis, Delaney passed away during a brain biopsy. The family was devastated but was able to find solace in the fact that Delaney’s organs saved the lives of three critically ill people. Delaney’s lungs, liver, and kidneys were a blessing for the recipients: a young man in the Montgomery area, a woman in Mobile, and a young woman in Nebraska. The Sheltons never experienced a lack of support from their family and church. When asked about his faith, Brian replied, “I know God carried us through it. I correct people who say that God took her. I tell them he caught her. I also think that this was a peek at God’s great working in our world. We often don’t see it. His ways are so outside of what we can understand that we often say ‘Why?’ or ‘Why me?’ What I saw was God take something horrible, dark and dreadful and make something good out of it.” The following year the Sheltons chose to become a foster family for two young girls, Ariel and Brittney. The girls were instantly accepted as family. Carolyn and Brian made the decision to adopt the girls on no set day as Brian says, “kind of evolved.” The adoption was finalized on January 15, 2008, which would have been the day after Delaney’s birthday. Soon after adopting the girls, the youngest Shelton was born. “I like to say God has a sense of humor in giving us two girls and then Benton eleven months later,” says Carolyn. With Easter being right around the corner, Brian’s message ties in with the Easter celebration beautifully. “I always like to point out this is exactly what God did in Christ. He took the black day of Good Friday, and turned it into a bright and glorious Easter. The death of Christ turned into the defeat of death, sin, and the devil on that first Easter Sunday. I’m not comparing Delaney to Jesus by any stretch, but it was a glimpse of how He works good out of the trials of life.” Since that time, the Sheltons have championed the cause of organ donation, bringing awareness to the critical need of hopeful recipients, and the need for adults to seriously consider becoming registered donors. As a registered donor, you are choosing to make a difference in someone’s life and to create a legacy that will live on long after you’re gone.

As an art teacher and a mom, I am always searching for creative and stylish ways to display children’s art work. There are tons of ideas out there, but I tend to lean towards quick and easy. Below are a few ideas that I just love. They take just a little bit of time to set up but then you’re set! When your little one comes in with their newest masterpiece, you now have the perfect place to display it beautifully! 1 The key here is matching 1. white frames, white background, and the grid style display. What could make this even easier is the front loading frames from Target. No more taking the picture off the wall to change out artwork! If you aren’t so keen about putting this many nail holes in the wall, check out Command Hanging Strips which leave no holes or residue on the walls. 1
2 This shows that you don’t have to 2. have a ton of wall space to get this look. You can find any nook around the house. As long as the art is protected by glass you can even do something like this in the bathroom.

The American Veterinary Medical Association estimates that more than 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have oral disease by the time they are three years old. Not only is oral disease common, if left untreated, it can affect the overall health of your family pet. This is because bacteria thrive in the plaque and tartar that build up along the teeth and below the gums, causing gingivitis. Gingivitis, as it progresses, causes periodontal disease, a painful inflammation that leads to gum recession, bone infection, loosening of teeth, and ultimately tooth loss. However, the bacteria that causes gingivitis does not stay in your pet’s mouth. It spreads through the bloodstream and infects other internal organs. Thus, periodontal disease can be a source of recurrent infections in the liver, pancreas, heat valves, kidneys, and urinary tract. The initial sign of periodontal disease is often bad breath. Many pet owners associate this odor with “doggie breath” and believe it is part of normal aging. However, bad doggie breath could be more than just “normal aging.” Bad breath may be a symptom that needs to be addressed. Periodontal disease is a problem that can be prevented with proper care. Regular dental care through tooth brushing and using appropriate diets designed to minimize the accumulation of plaque and tartar can help. In addition, regular veterinary visits for dental examinations and complete cleaning and polishing help prevent the long-term affects of periodontal disease. Dental disease in pets is a serious health risks for our pets, in part because it is a “silent” disease. Our pets cannot convey to us their teeth hurt. Therefore, we must look at our pet’s teeth often, brush those teeth, and visit the veterinarian at least twice per year so that he/she can look for evidence of gingivitis and/or periodontitis.

As spring unfolds here in the south, there is an increase in the amount of toxic substances that can harm our household pets. Many different flowers and plants are used to decorate our houses; however, many of these can do permanent damage to certain organs or can even kill our pets. Knowing which plants are toxic and keeping them at a safe distance from animals is a vital step to keeping our pets safe. During February, love is in the air. Women and men alike are showered with gifts from their “crush” or significant others. As you ride down the streets of Montgomery, you can see vendors setup on the side of the road selling balloons, teddy bears, candy and flowers. They also will be selling CHOCOLATE! Everyone loves to divulge into a heart-shaped box of fine chocolates, especially a curious, hungry dog or cat. Theobromine, the active ingredient in chocolate, stimulates the central nervous system, cardiac muscles, and induces smooth muscle relaxation. Different types of chocolates have varying levels of theobromine, with cacoa beans being the highest concentration and milk chocolate being the lowest. No matter how much chocolate your pet ingests, always consult with a veterinarian for a treatment plan.
Everyone has heard the phrase “April showers bring May flowers.” Beautiful lilies adorn many people’s ornamental gardens. Many people enjoy white Easter lilies during the month of April. But did you know that this could be deadly if ingested by your pet? All parts of the Easter lily are considered toxic and can cause acute renal failure. Ingestion of this plant should be considered a medical emergency and should be taken immediately to a veterinarian for treatment because of a high mortality rate associated with this toxin. Palm trees remind us of the beach and relaxation. Well many people have the smaller version of the palm tree in their homes. It is the sago palm. Although it may represent something beautiful and relaxing, it can be deadly to both humans and animals. The toxin is cycasin and it causes liver and kidney damage. The seeds are the most potent part of the plant and should never be consumed. Treatment is only supportive, as there is no antidote available for this toxin. All of these things were created for us to enjoy. However, all of them can be harmful for both humans and animals. Be careful what you make available to your pets. Always consult your veterinarian with questions regarding toxicities.
As March arrives in Alabama, so does warmer more humid weather. As many know, the south is known for beautiful flowers, one of those being the azalea. Azalea bushes have beautiful flowers that bloom in the spring. However, consumption of the leaves and flower nectar can cause cardiovascular effects that can be lethal.

He has a special interest in orthopaedic, soft tissue surgery, radiology and ultrsaonography. VW vs. Chrysler This year, the Volkwagon Passat beat out the flagship Chrysler 300 for Car of the Year, which is strange if you think of the stigma attached to the price of German autos. In this category of car, you have: the Toyota Camry (a longtime staple with Toyota fans), the Chrysler 300 (363 hp and offering over 30 mpg), the Nissan Maxima (the ultimate sedan sports car), the Dodge Charger Sedan (recently revamped and greatly improved) and a few others. To think that Volkswagen can beat out the likes of these with price and quality is a tough one for me to swallow. The four billion dollar plant outside Chattanooga has allowed this German auto company the ability to bring to market an exceptional vehicle without having to fight the value of the Euro. They have models (TDI) that are averaging over 43 miles per gallon. The base model is averaging at 30 mpg. A couple of perks are the great gas mileage the first 3-years and/or 36,000 miles of free maintenance. You are receiving a great deal and the amenities of an Audi starting at less than $20,000, with the most loaded models pricing out around $28,000-$30,000. The main problem is that Volkswagen has never been known to produce a really reliable car. Imagine how many Bugs, Bajas, Buses, and Things that are nowhere to be found anymore. The quality has greatly improved over the last few years, but that stigma will be difficult to overcome despite the newly improved products. Another possible issue is the reliability at resale value.

The 18th Annual Scott & Zelda Fitzgerald Museum Gala took place on March 3, 2012 at the Fitzgerald Museum, 919 Felder Avenue, Montgomery. The Gala was catered by King’s Table Catering, and jazz was played by Henry Pugh and Ted Mann. A silent auction and a Scott and Zelda look-alike contest highlighted the night and as the pictures suggest, a great time was had by all!

The Shopping Spree Before I ever opened It’Za Gift & Interiors, I prayed over the empty store front with a friend. I longed for it to be more than just a place of material goods. I prayed it would become a place of prayer, hope and friendships.
It’Za Gift & Interiors opened their doors in April of 2008. Sherry DeBray, owner, began as a gift and home décor neighborhood shop. “I have always had a love for design, people and sharing the Lord with my customers. I dreamed of creating a place where people felt at home – a place to shop where you are known.” Sherry said. It’Za Gift has become the place she dreamed of, with a few growing pains that produced the shop of today. “I never dreamed I would be selling apparel. It was not part of my original plan. I first decided to introduce apparel to my shop when the request from my customers kept rolling in…and am I glad I listened! We were able to secure several top lines such as Comfy USA, Chalet, Tempo and Oh My Gauze.” Boutique New to the industry of fashion, Sherry jumped right in and redesigned her store to house a boutique in the back half of the shop. “The more I ordered cute tops, pants and dresses, the more my customers asked for…it’s been exciting watching it grow. We’ve added scarfs, a larger line of jewelry and handbags, too. ” Sherry smiled. It’Za Gift & Interiors also carries Jaunty rugs, lamps, mirrors and special order furniture. “If the customer doesn’t see the lamp, table or mirror they are looking for, we can order it for them. We have wonderful catalogs for them to choose just the right piece for their home or office.”

When I first opened, I discovered Donnie Sasser at an art show. Donnie’s Faceless Angels have touched many hearts. It’s over whelming how well these special angels have done in my store. So much so, I felt I couldn’t keep him to myself. I introduced him to three large companies who became very excited about his work. Signing with one of those companies, Donnie’s work is now mass-produced and loved by people throughout the nation. And to think it all started at It’ZaGift. Of course, Donnie’s original work is still only sold at my shop.” “Working with several artists: oil portraits, pet portraits, angels and landscape artist, have become a very important part of my business. I love art and enjoy painting and writing, myself.” Sherry is a columnist and author of The Teacher’s Gift and Desperate Christian Women. She also has two new books in the works. “The shop has given me the opportunity to work, serve and love my community.
How blessed I am to see my dream come true. It’s not unusual for someone to ask us to pray for their family member who’s sick or a husband that lost his job. I’ve watched friends meet in the store to shop together and listened as they laughed and shared stories. It’Za Gift is more than just a store – it’s, as one customer put it, the neighborhood gathering place.” The customers love not only the atmosphere of this special shop, but the greeter that meets them at the door. Sherry’s little dog, Daisy, welcomes each guest as they enter the store. “The customers love her. In fact I have a few customers that will call first to make sure she is at work before they’ll come to shop.” Every year Sherry and the staff throw Daisy a birthday party in September at the store, but instead of Daisy receiving the gifts she gives gifts to her guest. “We love giving door prizes for Daisy’s birthday party. We do, however, have some sweet ladies that bring her treats and cards.”

Witness of Destruction and the Strength of the Human Spirit An Artist Reflects on the Tuscaloosa Tornado April 26, 7 p.m. Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts One Museum Dr. 334-240-4363 Artist Caleb O’Connor left Chicago in 2009 to undertake a mural commission for the Federal Courthouse in Tuscaloosa. Caleb was working on a scene of Moundville when the city was ravaged by a tornado on April 27, 2011. Moved by the nobility of spirit of the citizens of Tuscaloosa who helped each other across lines of race and class, Caleb reworked his mural design
to commemorate the event. The artist relied heavily on images and eyewitness accounts of the five minutes following the devastation along with his own documentation. The result is a composite of many scenes envisioned to celebrate the courageous and selfless acts in Tuscaloosa. mmfa.org
