A Word from our Mayor Welcome to the Capital of Dreams! Montgomery is a city that combines deep roots in history with a dynamic future. As Mayor of Montgomery, I have personally seen the progressive economic growth and development in our great city. Whether it is the amazing and diverse architecture, great weather, or friendly and talented people, Montgomery is a fantastic setting for film production.

Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange

In addition to the iconic residential and civic architecture, there is much to offer in our Capital City: the Alabama Shakespeare Theatre, Hank Williams Museum, Rosa Parks Museum, the Maya Lin-designed Civil Rights Memorial, Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church and Parsonage, the First White House of the Confederacy, the State Capitol, Maxwell/Gunter Air Force Base, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, Biscuits Baseball at Riverwalk Stadium and much more. Best of all, we’ve made it easy to see all of these sites through our Film Montgomery production location photo album.

Whether you’re filming a movie, television show, or a commercial, the City of Montgomery Film Office is ready to work with you to make your production a success. Add in the State of Alabama’s tax incentives and you will find that the City of Montgomery is a film-friendly community committed to making production here efficient and economical.

where six blocks of authenticallyrestored 19th- and early 20th-century structures beckon you to step back in time to the days of one-room schoolhouses, grist mills, and cotton gins--all without leaving the heart of downtown Montgomery. The 19th century village features completely authentic 19th-and early 20th-century homes and buildings that have been saved from demolition, carefully restored, and reopened to the public as a history museum in 1967. Jimmy Loeb and Millow Howard worked closely with the city with a vision to save the historic value. Their vision was to preserve and rent their houses and keep the history in Montgomery. Today, there are over thirty preserved structures at Old Alabama Town with six blocks of historic value. From lavish antebellum mansions to humble log cabins and slave quarters, at Old Alabama Town you will learn how early American of all backgrounds lived and worked in Central Alabama. Old Alabama Town is an outdoor history museum managed by the non-profit Landmarks Foundation for the City of Montgomery. The 19th century village is open yearround and its mission is to preserve, interpret and present Central Alabama's architecture, history and culture. Old Alabama Town is opened from Monday thru Saturday from 9 a.m - 4 p.m. with their last tour ticket sold at 3 p.m. They are closed on Sundays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Health & Fitness Dr. Rho Knows... Gums & Teeth

You do WHAT for a Living? Often when I meet someone for the first time and they find out what I do for a living, the expression on their face looks like they just realized the peanut they ate was actually a live cockroach. “How can you look at other people’s mouths all day?” they ask. It’s actually a good question. For fifteen years I have looked at, examined and worked on other people’s mouths. If I do some fuzzy math, that means that I have looked in approximately 86,400 mouths. Many of my colleagues and mentors have been doing this for decades longer than I have. They’ve seen even more. Our human body is so amazing that if you took one cubic millimeter of any random part of it, you can take a lifetime studying it and still never come even close to fully understanding the complexity and wonder of just that small piece of the miracle each of us are. Today’s western medicine has come leaps and bounds compared to the bloodletting and goose grease of just a century ago, but we’ve still only scratched the surface of knowledge when it come to the intricacy and mystery of what makes us. Take our mouths. Our mouths do amazing things. It helps us to communicate to each other by forming the words to speak and express how we are. The ends of our lips turn up to form a smile or down to frown, communicating without words. With words, our lips and tongues move in perfect synchronicity to form the sounds of our languages. We touch our lips to the forehead of our children to show them how much we love them. We touch them to each other to express our love and passion for the significant one in our lives. You’d think just that would be enough. Mouths are the physical space to the pleasure of eating. We taste delicious foods with it. Savor the texture and flavors of that perfectly baked pie as we chew it and release the burst of sweet, gooey filling and crisp tender crust. Meanwhile, our mouths excrete more saliva which has enzymes to help start break down the food as our tongues manipulate the food to our teeth to chew it into something we can swallow. Digestion has already begun before you can even say “Mmmmmmmm.” Mouths are a window to our health. Dry mouth, irritated gums, bad breath, broken or decayed teeth, and fuzzy 14

tongues are indicators of our general health. What does your mouth feel like when you’re sick? Different right? Uncomfortable. It’s pasty and dry. The taste of food is pale and muted. Textures feel scratchy. How about on the other end of the spectrum when you feel especially alive and healthy or when you feel blissed out like when you first fall in love. Your lips actually become fuller. Food tastes especially amazing. Your teeth even in and of themselves are live organs. They have blood and fluid coursing through them in the movement of your beating heart. They flex when they chew. Each tooth has a specialized function when you’re biting off a piece of the food, tearing it and chewing it. When you smile, they take in light and reflect and refract the beams much like a crystal prism to literally give you the gleam in your smile. They frame your smile and give you the character and characterizations that people remember about you when they think about you. In my work, I get to help to maintain the health of your mouth and I get to enhance the beauty of your smile. Today, I treated a 27 year-old woman who had been ashamed of her teeth and her smile for years. When she was finished and looked at herself in the mirror she burst into tears because she’d never seen her smile look so pretty. My assistant, Kristy, cried along with her sharing the joy and relief of the end of years of embarrassment. She’ll smile more now. Smiles are contagious. She’ll make other people smile more too. The gift goes on. These are just a few examples to illustrate just how cool your mouth is. I’ve only skimmed through just a small part of just a small part of what makes you the amazing human being you were created to be. When people ask me “How can you look into other people’s mouths all day?” I still think it’s good question! Have a merry Christmas and remember what a fantastic gift you already are! Dr. Frank K. Rho received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Loma Linda University in 1997. Beating the

by Corey & Donna Ellis Most people have a tendency to gain weight during the holiday season, and unfortunately, most of us do not lose the weight gained during this time. Not only do we gain weight, but we gain body fat. How many of you feasted for Thanksgiving, and will be feasting for Christmas and New Years? Whether it be through a business party, social gathering, or a family function, I'm more than sure that we all have, and will be, coming in contact with large amounts of delicious food within this string of holidays. You've been pushing yourself within your workouts consistently week in and week out this year, and staying disciplined with your food choices and intake. DON'T allow the holiday bust to derail your progress this year. Of course for most individuals, including us, the choices of food within this period of the year are not the best by any means, but you can definitely control how much food you're allowing yourself to consume. Let's make a conscious effort to try and make the better selection of foods at the time that you're in the presence of it, and control the amount of food that goes on to your plate, or better yet, in your mouth. Beyond that, you have to continue to exercise, and push your body to decrease calories and burn off body fat.

18

Holiday Bulge Preventing Weight Gain

First of all, make a plan to NOT gain weight. Yes, there is a difference. Set it in your mind that you will work on not putting on the pounds. Forget about trying to lose weight: it just may add extra stress to a season that is already stressful for most. Second, do not stop exercising. Let me stress that again, DO NOT STOP EXERCISING. Trying to maintain some type of physical activity will help prevent packing on the pounds. Exercise is your most effective method to not gain weight. If you cannot find enough time to exercise all at once, break it into small 10 minute bouts. Third, it is OK to say “No!” Do not eat out of obligation. I am not telling you not to eat at the holiday parties, but don’t feel pressured to eat something that you don’t want. Be aware of what and how much you put into your mouth. Portion control is the key. If you blow it one day, get back on track the next day. One slip up is no reason to start on a downward slope. Workout a little harder the next day and be more aware of what you eat. Fourth, be a little more scaleconscious. I will be the first to tell my clients to stay off of the scales everyday. However during the holiday season, I recommend to

weigh twice a week. If your scale starts to creep up, you will be able to notice it sooner and take action. Please keep in mind that it takes 3500 calories to gain or lose a pound. Last but not least, and now I am talking to the ladies, wear a snugfitting outfit that does not easily expand. This will be a conscious reminder not to stuff yourself. Also, pair your outfit with a cute clutch. You won’t have two easily accessible hands to eat. We’re not going to stay away from the parties this Christmas, and you shouldn’t either. However, we will still exercise, exercise, exercise. Don’t fall into the holiday trap and gain weight that usually does not come off. Make it a priority to stay active and your New Year’s Resolution won’t be to lose the weight you gained during the holiday season.

Don't Stop! Keep Pushing! Get Results!

Life Lessons

On Respect Dr. Kalai Mugilan, MA, MPH, PHD

I believe respect is greater than love! I know most of you would disagree. Every time that thought is introduced, people around me become upset. Some would even wonder if I love my wife! If love is greater, then how is it that the people who claim to love you can be disrespectful to you? Or, how do husbands who claim to love their wives become physically violent toward them? I know many people who claim to love their siblings or their children, but act or speak disrespectfully to them. Maybe they are not experiencing love for their “loved” ones, but confusing love with ownership or dependence. I am here to tell you maybe respect matters, and maybe respect is greater than love. Conversely, if I have respect for you, but not love, I will be respectful even when you are not around. If that is the case, I think I’d rather earn your respect than your love. Respect continues even in your absence, while speaking or acting disrespectfully to you also disrespects me. I am not sure if the same can be said for love. It is easier to love you even in your absence, because not loving you also means not loving myself. Respect is often mistaken and confused with power. Respect is never earned by exerting power over another. I may be fearful or mindful of you; but that behavior doesn’t mean I am respectful of you. I may have “respect” for you because you are able to punch my teeth out. That translates

to fear. I may even be kind and smile at you, yet I may not respect you. I may act respectfully to someone with a bigger gun, but, really, I just do not care for you or your gun and simply do not want trouble. However, the fearful behavior can be confused for respect and sometimes even misconstrued as love. Respect demands introspection so that we notice our own shortcomings and strengths. Respect demands that we notice the other people’s strengths as well: intellect, attitude, perspective and anything that the other person does to contribute to life. Respect is earned over time. Respect is gained through hard work and diligence. The observer develops respect for the person they have observed. Respect for oneself is what brings about respect from others. As respect is earned and developed; trust and loyalty may follow. Love does not necessarily evoke trust, but love certainly insists trust without evidence. Love does not necessarily insist loyalty, but respect wants you make up your own mind if I am trustworthy or worthy of loyalty. One may argue, perhaps, that with love, respect is born. I say the other way around: with respect, love is born. To my young friends who argue that love is greater, I tell them to find a person you respect, and a person that respects you in return, develop a friendship, and if the rest of the pieces fit, you just might find your greatest love.

PRIVATE DINING

Recipe of the Month: Pasta E Fagioli from SaZa Here's a quick & simple recipe for you that would make a great weeknight dinner for this time of the year. 1/4 pound bacon, (feel free to substitute with pancetta, ham or proscutto ) 1 medium onion chopped, about 1 cup 1 carrot peeled & chopped, about 1/2 cup 1 stalk celery chopped, about 1/2 cup 4-5 cloves of garlic 1/2 cup sherry (optioinal) 2 quarts chicken stock 1 small can diced tomatoes

2 cans of cannellini beans, drained & rinsed 1/2 pound spaghetti, broken in to 1 inch pieces 2 tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive oil Salt & pepper Parmesan cheese Crusty bread

Heat a large pot, 6-8 quarts, over medium high 1-2 minutes or until hot. Add the oil & bacon & saute for 2-3 minutes or until some of the fat begins to render out of the bacon. Add the onion, carrot, celery & garlic. Season with 1 tablespoon salt & 1-2 teaspoon pepper or to taste. Cook 3-4 min until the vegetables begin to soften. Deglaze with sherry if using & reduce until almost gone. Add the chicken stock, tomatoes & beans. Bring to a boil & reduce the heat to simmer. Cook uncovered for 5-6 minutes stirring occasionally. Add the pasta & stir to keep it from sticking together. Cook for 3-4 minutes & check the pasta for doneness. You want the pasta to be a little under cooked since it will continue to cook as the soup cools. Serve with lots of crusty bread & parmesan. If you want to crank up the flavor, feel free to add a 2-3 inch sprig of rosemary, 1/2 teaspoon thyme & a bay leaf to the vegetables just before you add the sherry or chicken stock.

The Wheel

Faith

by Rev. Dr. Wendy R. Coleman

One of my favorite Bible passages is Jeremiah 18:1-4. God sent Jeremiah down to the potter's house to watch the potter work on a vessel. A piece of clay was on the wheel, but it was damaged and didn't quite take the shape the potter planned. So he started over again and worked with the clay until it held the shape the potter had in his mind. I love this story about the potter's wheel because it's so applicable to us today. If we put God in the place of the potter and our lives in the place of the clay, we can begin to understand why it's important to stay on the wheel while God works some things out. He might have to reshape us, remake us, fold us back down to just a plain lump of clay, but when He's done, look out world! We'll be Anointed, dynamite, powerful vessels that He'll use for His Glory. The best thing about it is HE ALREADY KNOWS WHAT THE FINISHED PRODUCT WILL LOOK LIKE! We can get caught up in how we feel while we're on the wheel and what we'll look like when He's done, but I encourage you to stay on the wheel and trust Him while He remakes you. I promise you'll be beautiful when His work is complete. This holiday season as we go about our lives at work, home, school, the mall, or wherever we find ourselves, let's try to focus on the fact that God does still have us in His hands. He is still working on each and every one of us. He is still molding and shaping us into His image and His likeness. It's true for us and true for those we encounter.

I know you might think some folks just don't act like they even know God, much less being in His hands! That might be true, but let me deposit this revelation into your spirit: even if they say they don't know God and don't care to know Him, as long as YOU ARE THERE, God is working on them. Our witness and our testimony are the tools God uses to work on those around us. We don't have to shout or preach or even point out their flaws. All we have to do is be there and "let our light so shine" (Matthew 5:16). Understand that ours are the only hands God has to do His work in the earth. Ours are the only voices He has to speak life into those who are lost. Ours are the only hearts He has to connect with the hearts of all mankind. Ours are the only tears He has to shed when others are going through trials and just need somebody to be there for them. The fact that you allow yourself to stay on the wheel allows God to shape and mold you, yes. But it also allows Him to use you because He knows if you trust Him to make you into what He wants and needs you to be, He can trust you to be a blessing to someone else. When you trust His work in your life, He can use you to work in someone else's life. So the wheel is not just for you. It's for him and her and them and them and him and her and them . . . Stay on the wheel, my friends, somebody is watching God work on you.

and simply " Santa "

by Yvonna Richardson Green Gate School Fifty-five years ago, I became really fascinated by this man with many names. When I was five years old, I sat in his lap, explaining how “good” I had been and how much I deserved the Chatty Cathy doll I wanted so badly. As the first talking doll, Chatty Cathy was at the top of every little girl’s list. My mother had told me that due to her popularity, Santa would need to make substitutions. I looked deep into Santa’s eyes and assured him that should he choose me, Chatty Cathy would be loved forever, and I didn’t want any other toys. As the elf finally had to gently remove me from Santa’s lap, he laughed his “Ho!Ho!Ho!” and reminded me to believe. So I believed with all my heart and Santa delivered. Our Christmas tree seemed to have a special glow on Christmas morning because Chatty Cathy was sitting there in her red velvet party dress waiting for me. I ran to her and immediately pulled her talking string. Her first words were “I love you.” I promised to believe in Santa forever. I never understood why every year during my childhood, there was always some “kook” that would ask my teachers, scout leaders, and other adults the same question, “Is Santa real?” The answer was always the same: “Yes, Santa is real.” I mean, come on already. Why keeping asking, “Is Santa real?” That’s like asking, “Is love real?” Just because you can’t see him doesn’t make him less real. Sure he is surrounded by stories and legends, but that doesn’t make him less real.

36

Remember, Santa chose Christmas Eve to deliver his love to the children of the world. Each time I asked my mother and daddy the question, their answer was always the same, “If you believe in love, you then you believe in Santa.” Since that time, the question, “Is Santa Real?" has crossed my mind. Through the years I have kept my eyes open and I am happy to report: Yes, Santa is real!!! Proof ? I have it; my daughter Karoline’s face when she discovered the Molly doll she wanted so badly under our tree. She cried with joy. When Emily, my daughter, noticed Santa had freckles she suddenly loved her freckles and announced freckles must be magic. When I asked my new son-in-law where he stood on the Santa question Eddie told the story about how his mom had set a trap to catch Santa, only to find a piece of red velvet and a note to “Believe,” so he believes too. My husband’s voice changes when he describes the stockings stuffed with simple and exotic Christmas goodies he and his brother shared. This year was my first year without my parents, yet Santa still came and Chatty Cathy is still with me. I believe… so, “You better watch out ‘cause Santa Claus is coming to town!" . . . and I will always believe in love and Santa.

What Should I Get For the Young Artist in My Life? by Kasey Hope

This book has lots of ideas that can keep your child busy throughout the holidays!

A low-cost super-fun drawing book. This can be found at Michaels or online!

This year skip buying the art sets with hundreds of poor quality supplies. Instead make your own art kit. This craft paint from Michaels works great with bright colors and good coverage. It's not washable but lets face it...washable paint just isn't pretty. So put on a smock and get painting!

Another low-cost drawing book for boys.

Your artist will feel super special if you can splurge on some big canvases! I prefer these blank canvases and paints to any craft kit. This lets your little artist simply be an artist! You can find these at your local craft store!

Bubble art is a favorite art project for all ages. You can get some really cool results with this technique. www.alex.com

Parents, you are gonna want to hijack your kid’s bike with this fun chalk! www. uncommongoods. com

My all-time favorite book for kids. It teaches them to not try to be perfect but to get creative with their mistakes!

38

No need to for a kiln with this air dry clay!

Make your own snow globe straight from the MOMA in NYC. www.momastore.org

Yes, we know these are for cooking but why not ART! Love these mom and daughter matching aprons from www.uncommongoods.com!

Don’t Let Separation Anxiety Take the “Jingle” out of Your “Bells” by Dr. Phil Mitchell, DVM

As the holidays approach, separation anxiety becomes more common in dogs. During the holidays pet owners travel, attend holiday functions or act as host to holiday festivities. All require subtle changes to a pet’s regular routine causing signs of separation anxiety or worsening of an already existing anxiety problem. Nothing can be more frustrating than returning home to find your sofa shredded, door scratched, house soiled, or belongings destroyed. Understanding what causes separation anxiety can help pet owners cure the problem. It just takes a combination of “human” and “pet” conditioning. First, pet owners must understand the signs of “separation anxiety.” It often consist of persistent howling, barking or whimpering when you leave, even if your absence is for a short time. The behavior manifest to destruction of property and even house soiling. In some cases, excessive drooling will occur. Without behavior intervention, separation anxiety can develop into other anxiety problems in dogs including noise phobias and body destruction including excessive chewing of the feet or tail. It is the most common anxiety disorder I see, but fortunately easy to prevent and treat. The treatment is not difficult, if the “human” is willing to change some bad habits they have created. It is important for all pet owners to realize, our pet is an animal and has certain “dog instincts” which we will never be able to remove no matter what our dog’s pedigree.

42

NO EMOTIONAL FAREWELLS. Any excitement created before you leave transforms into anxiety for your dog. This means do not get your dog worked up with your emotional farewell. You should treat your departure exactly like to you treat every day activities like laundry, preparing meals or opening the mail. I doubt pet owners make a big deal about these activities. The best farewell is done when you get your keys and leave. Believe it or not, this type of “good by” is healthier for you dog’s psyche than the “emotional” farewell many dog owners give. PROVIDE A SPECIAL TOY. Before your departure, leave a “special” time consuming treat like a food filled kong toy. This distracts your pet from your departure and gives him/her something to do while you are away. NO EMOTIONAL RETURNS. Ignore your dog when you return if he/ she meets you with uncontrollable excitement. Ignoring your pet can be tough, but it is needed in order to confirm to him/her that it is a normal activity when you return. Once your dog has settled down then give him/her attention. DOGGIE DAYCARE. Consider a fun and interactive doggie daycare if you will be leaving for long periods of time during the day. A good program should provide a safe and loving environment that emphases exercise and socialization. ALONE TIME. Encourage your dog to play with his/her toys without you. This gives them the security of knowing they can still have fun when you are away.

EXERCISE. A build up of stored energy can cause multiple behavior problems in a dog. When owners leave, their dog acts out because he/she does not know what to do with built up energy. If you do not have time to exercise your dog daily, consider enrolling him/her in a reliable doggie daycare program. MEDICATION. If your dog suffers from severe separation anxiety your veterinarian may suggest a medication that increases serotonin production. However, medications is meant to facilitate a behavior modification program not replace it.

Holidays are a time for you and your family to enjoy each other. This often means normal day to day routines change. Pets must understand this change is temporary and not a big ordeal. To ensure a smooth transition exist when separation is necessary remember leaving and returning without emotion is critical. Also, provide several bouts of exercise daily to offset a build up of excess energy. For many pet owners, doggie daycare programs provide an excellent option for exercise and socialization. By providing a little “human” and “pet” behavior modification, hopefully you can prevent separation anxiety in your companion friend and keep the “jingle” in your “bells” ringing this holiday season. Dr. Philip Mitchell has been practicing veterinary medicine for over 20 years at Taylor Crossing Animal Hospital.

Parking Lot

How To Make the Most of a New Car Purchase

by Brett Richardson

W

hen we sit and think about the costs involved in a new car purchase, we know several things. 1) When we purchase a new car, it depreciates twenty percent as soon as it leaves the lot. 2) Three weeks after that, it will have several scratches. 3) Heaven forbid it has been in a wreck, because now, it’s only worth 60 percent of the amount you owe. Very few vehicles ever appreciate in value, especially when they are produced by the millions. What we, as educated consumers, need to know is how to make lemonade out of lemons and create a positive out of a notoriously negative investment.

N

ow, companies like Ford offer a lifetime warranty on powertrains. When you figure out the costs involved in owning a vehicle for 3-4 years, the number is quite different when compared to owning a vehicle 10-20 years. To make the best in a down economy, take advantage of some of these offers. Maybe we should change our views on vehicles and look at a vehicle as an investment for the future.

L

et’s say you have a child that will be driving in a few years. You know that you have the new car itch every couple of years, so look at one with an outstanding warranty. Find a car that you can finance for 4-6 years with a lifetime warranty.

A

fter the burden of a car payment is removed, you’ll have a dependable, reliable vehicle without a car payment and you won’t have to worry about a huge repair, such as replacing an engine or transmission that can cost thousands of dollars. So our current ten-year-old will have a car that is paid for when they run off to college spending all your money.... to the tune of $20,000 a year or more (most likely more by that time). Or maybe a reliable car without a payment can be the difference in pursuing your long-term goals... such as retirement, buying a boat or taking that great trip.

N

ow back to the original point, if we purchase a new car without the worries of what is going to happen within the next few years or, heaven forbid, the next few decades, how does that affect what we spend or why we buy? When the housing market is in shambles, and the market is completely and utterly volatile, the consumer needs every competitive advantage.

I

t is a simple fact that the reward for being in business is profit, but how can the consumer get the most bang for their dollar? How can a vehicle actually be a good investment? No time ever in history have such offers been on the table. For once, the educated consumer can make a good investment by purchasing something that will stand the test of time. So, maybe, just this once, a vehicle can be a decent investment.

Shopping Spree

D’livia Boutique It all started out with a hair bow.

Once upon a time, Voncile Anthony, the owner of D’livia Boutique, worked for Hancock Fabrics. While working at Hancock, she was stunned by a hair bow she saw on a little girl. The little girl’s grandmother taught Voncile how to make the bow. Voncile started out doing arts and crafts shows and hair bows. She started to travel and started to do shows: the Junior Leaque, the Christmas Village in Birmingham and the Cotton Tail in Birmingham. In 1999, she opened D’livia Boutique on Mulberry Street. She then moved to her current location at 1915 Mulberry Street in 2003. She makes all of her clothing except for the smocked outfits. She still hand-makes the hair bows today!

Joe Bonamassa December 5; 8 p.m. Montgomery Performing Arts Center 201 Tallapoosa St. 334-481-5100 As Joe Bonamassa grows his reputation as one of the world’s greatest guitar players, he is also evolving into a charismatic bluesrock star and singer-songwriter of stylistic depth and emotional resonance. His ability to connect with live concert audiences is transformational, and his new album, Black Rock, brings that energy to his recorded music more powerfully than ever before. The tenth solo album and eighth studio release of his career – as well as his fifth consecutive with producer Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Black Crowes, etc.) – the disc adds an enlivening dose of ‘world’ vibes to Bonamassa’s virtuoso mix of ‘60s-era British bluesrock (à la Beck and Clapton) and roots-influenced Delta sounds.
