Revised K-10: yay or nay? By: Stephanie Lagutom

I

n 2012, the Philippines followed the K-12 curriculum during the administration of late president Benigno Aquino III. On August 10, 2023, the Department of

of Education (DepEd) launched the revised curriculum called the 'Matatag' curriculum or the revised K-10. It aims to focus on prioritizing fundamental lessons rather than unnecessary workloads for both teachers and students, hence decongesting the curriculum by 70%. There are five subjects instead of seven which are: Language, Reading and Literacy, Math, Makabansa (Nationalism and Patriotism), and Good Manners and Conduct (GMRC). Schools will adapt the revised curriculum gradually but there are already pilot implementations this school year. "There are competencies that are only nice to know but not a must to know. That's why we aim for essential learning competencies," said Jocelyn Andaya, the director of the DepEd Bureau of Curriculum and Development. The department stated that they want to remove workloads that only burden the students rather than polishing them for the real world. They want to emphasize 21st-century skills like digital literacy, critical thinking, non-verbal communication, and informed decision-making.

Will revising the curriculum improve the education system in our country? Statistics found a decline in the performance of Filipino learners; will removing subjects like mother tongue and implementing new ones like GMRC and Makabansa improve the learners' performance? Many people, especially educators from the provinces, stated their dissatisfaction with the removal of Mother Tongue as a subject. They believe that removing this subject will disregard their life's work and insult the principles that they advocate. In our educational system, learners undergo conditioning where they are accustomed to certain learning styles and, in some cases, reinforced to follow a path laid out for them with no ifs and buts. The revised curriculum wants to target improving the learners' fundamental skills and math problem solving. They believe that these are the lessons that would be useful to them and to society. Would this revised curriculum aid the development of our learners? Or would this cause a major public dispute? What are your opinions on the implementation of the Matatag curriculum? reach out to us on jhsthescroll@gmail.com

H

ave you ever experienced 'Déjà Blue"? On August 14th, the Frosh Night marked the beginning of Jose Rizal University (JRU) academic year 2023-2024, extending a warm welcome to all fellow Rizalians inside the campus. Numerous participants unleashed their inner stars, along with other fans paying tribute to one of their favorite pop stars, which was met with immense hype and excitement.

The evening was a resounding success, featuring the talented members of the JRU Dance Troupe who showcased their dance skills. The theme revolved around a blue and gold color-coded style, infused with a touch of inspiration from Taylor Swift, as envisioned by the Rizalians who organized this remarkable event. Frosh Night is primarily intended to extend a warm welcome to first-year students, allowing them to relish and enjoy the school year ahead. The Rizalians hoped and supported the newcomers in their incoming journey of finding their path to achieve their dreams. The campus hosted various booths that resembled the experience of a Swiftie fan at a Taylor Swift concert. For instance, there were bracelets and souvenirs featuring every Taylor Swift album, thoughtfully prepared by JRU's student organizations. 'Taylor Sheesh' also made a grand entrance to perform at Frosh Night for every Rizalian that were eagerly waiting for her to make an appearance, she was considered to be the star of the show when in fact, the whole concept is similar to a Taylor Swift concert. There are some people who aren't likely to be known themselves as ‘Swifties’. However, the community chose to be more welcoming about it and also to let them know that things can be experienced and discovered. This event was a major highlight of Frosh Night 2023, creating unforgettable memories on campus. The occasion also featured entertaining cosplayers, including the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. It is a sign for the first-year students to look forward to the university's monthly events. Giving them the invitation to join in and savor the moments as they last to experience the 'Déjà Blue' feeling. Jose Rizal University JHS - The Scroll

Taal ‘s shroud: smog forces class suspensions BY HANNAH EURESE B. BRIGUERA

O

n September 22, 2023, Batangas residents living near the Taal Volcano faced an unexpected environmental phenomenon: the eruption of Taal Volcano caused a peculiar meteorological condition known as "Taal smog," a mixture of smoke and fog. In response to the environmental disaster, local governments made the tough but necessary decision to suspend classes.

The local government's unprecedented decision to stop school completely altered the educational landscape in Metro Manila. What are they? They were just as transparent as the smog was thick. Top of the list were concerns for people's health and safety due to the hazardous chemicals and tiny particles brought on by Taal Smog. These contaminants could damage respiratory systems and irritate eyes when inhaled. Morning commutes became dangerous and the possibility of accidents increased with vision down to a whisper. In reaction, school authorities suspends classes in order to protect kids, teachers, and staff from potential risk

Taal smog, an acronym coined to characterize the odd combination of smoke and fog, is caused by volcanic eruptions. Taal Volcano erupted, spewing not just ash and volcanic debris into the skies, but also hazardous gasses. These gasses, when combined with moisture and sunlight, produced a thick, hazy cloud that engulfed Metro Manila. This unusual weather pattern sparked major worries about air quality, visibility, and public health.

Furthermore, right after she received her diploma, she dove headfirst into the world of education as a Junior High School (JHS) teacher in Taguig. Remarkably, it was the same year that she actively prepared for and triumphantly passed the licensure examination for English, therefore solidifying her commitment to teaching. Meanwhile, we can all agree that everyone needs inspiration to keep going. As for Ms. Datuon, the driving force behind her decision to pursue education was her mother. Her unwavering belief in the importance and beauty of education resonated deeply with Ms. Datuon. Her mother, unfortunately, couldn’t complete her studies due to financial constraints, which fueled her determination and perseverance to make most of the educational opportunities before her. In addition, selecting Jose Rizal University (JRU) over other schools in Mandaluyong was a tough decision. She added that JRU provides an environment where she could flourish as an educator. She believes the university’s mission and vision align closely with her educational philosophy and teaching strategies. Ms. Datuon is a firm believer in making learning an enjoyable experience for her students. She achieves this by applying various games and technology to her lessons. These are some of her strategies that not only enhance her student’s understanding but also broaden their horizons while they’re having fun.

In essence, her students’ success is an integral part of her success as an educator, and that’s what motivates her every day.

The Kingdom of Therondia, a onceprosperous kingdom known for its citizens' love for literature, is now ruled by an arrogant and selfish tyrant, King Rhya Alderidge. Decades have passed since the Alderidge Clan started ruling and wreaking havoc on the said kingdom. In the heart of the kingdom, the city of Naroa, lived a man named Neige. Neige was an ordinary man; at least that's what he thinks. Growing up in an orphanage, he believes that his whole existence is a curse. Otherwise, his parents wouldn't have abandoned him. He's been working as a baker for 4 years after he got out of his so-called home, earning just the right amount of money to survive. One fateful evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows over the castle grounds, Neige was closing up the shop. Suddenly, he heard heavy pants and groans coming from an alleyway. His blood ran cold, and his gut told him to ignore the sounds and go home as curfew was nearing. But something in his brain was telling him to see what was going on. Not every day does something interesting happen in his life. The young man sighed, walking slowly towards the alley. He unconsciously placed his hand over his mouth; his heart was pounding in his ears. As Neige took a peak, his heart dropped. There was a bloodied nobleman with a knife stuck in his chest. Neige froze on the spot, not knowing how to react. The poor man looked at him, his eyes begging for help. As if his body had its own mind, Neige ran towards the injured stranger’s side. He knelt beside the nobleman, his mind racing as he tried to assess the situation. The alley was dark, and the air smelled like rust. He reached gingerly for the blade lodged in the man’s chest. As Neige’s fingertips brushed over the blade’s hilt, the man groaned in agony. The sound made Neige panic more, as he was afraid that one of the guards would show up. Taking the knife out would be dangerous, but leaving it there was also not an option. With one swift motion, he finally pulled it out. Blood started flowing out of the now-open wound. At this point, Neige felt like he was about to lose his mind. "Hey, who did this to you? "Nige stuttered; his voice was shivering. “Winter's heir... beneath the crimson moon... betrayed by shadows... shall rise... soon.” The nobleman croaked weakly. The message made Neige let out a sound of confusion. His eyebrows furrowed as he looked into the nobleman’s eyes, searching for answers. The man’s breath was getting weaker, and so was his body. Neige noticed this as he started shuffling around, thinking of ways to keep the man alive. “Seize! What do you think you're—Lord Adlai? "An authoritarian voice spoke from behind Neige. As if anything could get any worse, it was a royal guard. Given his current position, the guard will surely think that Neige was the one who harmed the nobleman.
