Francois (Frans) Roos was the son of Johannes Roos and Elisabeth Roux of Drakenstein. The Roos family were a well known Cape family. In the last quarter of the 18th century his grandfather Tieleman and father Johannes were members of the Patriot rebellion against the Cape administration. In 1805 he married Maria Elizabeth Furstenberg. The rebellious spirit in the Roos family emerged again in 1798 when Frans Roos, his brother and a few other young Cape men told the British government George Macartney that they refused to declare their oath of 1

allegiance to Britain, because it would mean they would be required to reject their motherland. While working as a clerk in the Cape magistrates court he befriended Willem Fredrik Hertzog, who was employed as ‘landscaper’ in Stellenbosch district. Hertzog was renowned for his accurate town map of Stellenbosh. On 23 January 1818 Frans Roos bought the farm Coetzenburg, where he owned a larger home, slave quarters (he owned 13 slaves), a stable and other buildings. He later sold Coetzenberg. In 1835 the family went by boat to Natal where they joined the Voortrekkers, shortly after the murder of Piet Retief. When Dingaan attacked Port Natal on 23 April 1838, Frans Roos and family, were among the Voortrekkers and English traders who took shelter on the ship Comet. After the Battle of Bloodriver Roos joined one of the Voortrekker lagers, where he later become the secretary of the Natal Volksraad. In September 1839 he became the Magistrate of Port Natal, and later began to practice as an attorney. In September 1840, he was responsible for subsequently filing an application for the Volksraad, to Governor Sir. George Napier to request that the Boers be recognized as a free and independent volk, by the British Government. He was subsequently awarded an erf in Congella in payment for his work on the Volksraad; and subsequently owned one in Pietermaritzburg. He died in the home of his son-in-law W.J.H. Schultz on Kliprivier, later Ladysmith.
[C.6] Elizabeth Cornelia ROOS (25.05.1817-1883) and James Augustus JOHNSTONE (1810~1851) Elisabeth Cornelia ROOS was born 03/11/1805 (from Laings Nek, Natal); and married JOHNSTONE, James Augustus on 20 September 1837 in Port Elizabeth. James Augustus JOHNSTONE was born circa 1810 in Edinburgh (Dumpfries?), Scotland), and was an 1820 settler. The wedding was witnessed by M. Borcherds and S. Heugh. After the birth of their first son in 1841, they moved up to Natal, where they got involved in sugar farming. On 16 May 1847 he left her. He was nursed in Somerset West on the false name of Augustus James SCOTT in 1849. The following newpaper report was filed in the Natal court archives of their divorce: £5 REWARD To any person giving information to the undersigned respecting the death of AUGUSTUS JAMES JOHNSTONE alias AUGUSTUS JAMES SCOTT Who came from PORT NATAL to CAPE TOWN in 1849, was confined in SOMERSET HOSPITAL, under a FEIGNED NAME, and supposed to have DIED there. he was then about 39 years of age, had light hair, and blue eyes, projecting eye-teeth, irregular teeth on lower jaw, about 5 feet 7 inches high, slender and rather reserved in his demeanor. He left his wife and family at Port Natal, who have not since his departure heard from his. P.J. HAUPT & Co. (*The South African Commercial Advertiser and Cape Town Gazette* of Saturday 19 July 1856). On 27 November 1851 she filed for divorce. According to her affidavit she was of the opinion that he went to East-India. Except for one letter two months after his departure, she never heard from him again. She brought up the children and told them that he drowned on the way to Mauritius. They had three children: Francis Augustus Robert, 1840 Port Elizabeth; Maria Charlotte, 1841 Pietermaritzburg; Bernardus Pieter, 1843 Pietermaritzburg.
[D3] Bernardus Pieter JOHNSTONE (08.07.1843-20.08.1914) and Margaritha Aletta MOLL (17.08.1864-23.08.1928) Bernardus JOHNSTONE was born in Pietermaritzburg and lived in the Utrecht district. On 17.09.1865 he married Magritha Aletta MOLL; daughter of Jacobus Cornelis Nicolaas MOLL (*07.04.1820 +17.06.1896 x 09/01/1843) and Maria Elizabeth Rachel VAN NIEKERK (*07.05.1824-?). They had eight children: On 30.08.1888, he married her cousin (exact same name) Margaritha Aletta MOLL in Wakkerstroom (*17.08.1864, Riversdale, Cape; +23.08.1928 on Dassiesfontein); daughter of Johannes Cornelius MOLL (*16.01.1826 +25.09.1901) and Magdalena Jacomina JANSE VAN RENSBURG. [F1] Clive Henry JOHNSTONE (28.10.1935) and Ann Elizabeth BOSMAN (14.2.1946) Clive JOHNSTONE was born on 28 October 1935 in Volksrust. Clived married Ann Elizabeth BOSMAN (daughter of Andries Willem BOSMAN and Elizabeth Gertruida KOLVER on 11 February 1966. They lived in Volksrust and Newcastle while farming on the Johnstone farm ‘Gerizim’, subsequently selling the farm to retire to George. Clive Henry JOHNSTONE was born on 28 October 1935 in Volkstrust, and was the son of John (Jack) Henry JOHNSTONE and Charlotte THOM. Ann and Clive have four children: (1) Lara, (2) Graeme Henry, (3) Wendy and (4) Andre Bosman.
