The project investigates the notion of the public ‘face’ through movement and changes in the building's skin, engaging with and separating inhabitants from the public realm. It deals with the corner condition (located at road cross-junction) by creating an anti-corner, detaching itself from traditional ideas of the physcial icon or gateway marker to create a courtyard which serves the inhabitants of the apartment more than it does the public. Such internalization of common space, hidden from view of the very public cafe, becomes the unifying entity and a shared identity of the inhabitants. Responding to the presence of a heritage listed building behind, the proposed building maintains a low built up height whilst using a restrained material palette so as to not overshadow adjacent buildings.
