– Behind the scenes with Daphne Greene Job Description: Sales Manager of the Greenhills Hotel Family history: “The Greenhills Hotel was built by my father in 1970 and has been run by the Greene family ever since. My father loves this business and never describes it as work, he always says he is fortunate to love what he does every day. He will never retire.” When did you first get involved? “I started working there during my summer holidays when I was about 14. My first job was in the housekeeping department, which was very tough work, but I was told I had to know how to do every job in the hotel and so I worked through every department.” Did you go straight into the hotel after school? “No, I started a four year degree in economics and politics at Trinity College Dublin.” Do other family members work at the hotel? “My brother Hugh is our director of food, which is the main heart of our business. We have an excellent reputation for good food and this is so important when building a solid wedding business.”
What makes the Greenhills stand out? “I believe our personal attention and service to each of our couples is what makes us stand out from the other hotels. I personally deal with every wedding and I am here on the day to ensure everything runs smoothly for them. There is no such thing as Monday to Friday in our business, we are there when the business is, and I think that is what makes us stand out.” Any recent renovations? “Yes, last year alone we re-invested over €400,000 in our garden and overall landscaping of our entrance, we believe in re-investment and creating a property that will continue on for another 40 years.” Any last words? “We are putting our personal name to our product and service and therefore take our reputation very seriously and we strive all the time to improve ourselves and our product.”

The First Dance – The Limerick Girls’ Choice
Hello Limerick Brides Although I’m three years out the gate I’ve spent the past nine-months living and breathing all things weddings in Limerick. After returning from New York and marrying a Limerick man I saw a big gap in the local wedding magazine market so I jumped right in. This is our inaugural issue and if I say so myself I am very pleased with how it turned out. Here at Brides of Limerick we are so grateful to everyone who made this dream a reality. I can’t even begin to name names but you all know who you are. Brides of Limerick aims to serve the local bride-to-be. We hope you will enjoy our local articles scattered throughout the magazine and get some fun ideas for your own pending nuptials. Our front page shot was taken at the Lakeside in Killaloe. My husband’s parents, Mar and Colum Mooney, got married there in 1966 so it was a no brainer going back to where it all began to do our first photo shoot for the magazine. Thanks to our wonderful photographer from TimTim Media – Timmy Keane – we got some wonderful pictures despite the rainy weather. Our amazing models – Ailish, Susan and Marina, (pages 6, 8 and 10) were just that, amazing. And thanks to Claire Curtin (make-up) and Dawn Adams (hair) the girls were picture perfect. We were offered models for our shoot but we declined. We chose to use real former brides to grace the cover of our first issue – after all it is called Brides of Limerick – and we feel it keeps it real – a local focus for the local bride. We would like to extend a big thank you to all our advertisers who jumped on board with the mere mention of a local magazine and we hope our relationship will flourish through the years. Our wonderful graphic designer, Orla Gilbourne, has elegantly brought Brides of Limerick to life and that we are very proud of. And a big thank you to Cube Printing in Ballysimon for the final product.

WEDDING PLANNING
Affordable Wedding Not all brides have the luxury of time on their hands. Some brides just don’t like planning, other brides want those special touches put into their big day and more often than not these brides hire a wedding planner. Brides of Limerick is pleased to welcome Gill Cleary of Gillybean Events to our local wedding family. Below Gill outlines the duties of a wedding planner, the costs associated with it and the various services she provides. What does a Wedding Planner do? At first, the wedding planner meets with a couple, or perhaps the bride and her parents to verify what type of budget the couple has and what type of wedding they would like. In view of the budget, the wedding planner makes suggestions as to churches or other locations, possible clergy members or others lawfully commissioned to perform weddings, locations for receptions, types of wedding cakes, photography services, musicians or music services, and catering services. The next step is to figure out theme and décor, which incorporates choosing how the food will be served, how the reception area will be decorated, and what sort of flowers will adorn any bridesmaids or groomsmen and wedding locations and reception areas. How much is a Wedding Planner? It is standard for a wedding planner to charge 10% – 20% of the weddings budget. However, I charge considerably less than that. I base my fee off of the budget, also what amount of planning the bride and groom wish for me to partake in.
Gillybean offer three wedding packages: The Guidance Package: If you have the time to arrange your own wedding but would like a little nudge in the right direction then this may be the package for you. My guidance package will help you find the best venue and vendors to suit your wedding theme. The Self-Help Package: This package suits the couple who have planned and organised their wedding, but would like someone to oversee the remaining two days of the process. The wedding details would be handed over to me two days prior to the wedding and I would be on hand on the wedding day itself. The Complete Package: Do not stress, everything will be taken care of!! This package will allow you to carry on with your busy life while I assist from the moment you get engaged. I will assist with the budget, venue visits, meetings with photographers, florists, hair and beauty artists, musicians, church singers. We will draw up seating plans, look at the logistics for the wedding day. I will be on hand for two days, the day before the wedding and the wedding day itself. I will ensure that you have the perfect day that you have dreamed of while you relax and enjoy it!
What constitutes a good Wedding Planner? A good wedding planner is someone who will listen to your needs. It’s also someone that won’t talk over you. A great planner will focus their complete attention on you and your big day regardless of what number of customers he/she might have. A good planner is one who will follow your budget and achieve all your desires. A good planner will make themselves accessible to you any time of the day for any enquiry regardless of how minor. What are the steps to hiring you as a Planner? Firstly I assure the couple that each of my weddings are distinctive. I will offer services dependent on the couple’s needs and their budget. I offer consultations where we can examine the necessities and I will give the couple a quote for my planning service. When a decision is made to hire me, we will sit down and examine the couples budget, colour scheme, theme, and ideas for their big day. We will then sign a contract detailing precisely what a couple will gain from me as their planner and what I will be paid. 50% of the planning fee will be expected at contract signing and the remaining 50% on the wedding. She didn’t and just as well because that following weekend Paudie got down on bended knee at her daddy’s house and asked her to spend the rest of her life with him. She accepted! And then there was no stopping Rachelle. With the help of her 10-year old daughter Megan plans were put in place for a small intimate New Year’s Eve wedding. “We had always wanted a small wedding. Having our close family and friends around us on our special day is what was important to us,” Rachelle told Brides of Limerick. And the intimate wedding of 75 guests paid off at the No 1 Pery Square Hotel. “We got to enjoy everyone’s company and spend quality time with them,” shared Rachelle. Rachelle said it couldn’t have been more perfect getting married at Christmas time in the city that she loves so much.

A DIY Vintage
Summer Wedding Store manager Elaine Keogh remembers Christmas Day 2011 like it was yesterday. It was one of the happiest days of her life. It was the day the head chef from the Absolute Hotel, Wayne Anderson, originally from Birmingham, proposed to her. The couple were together four years and Elaine will admit herself she was ready to start planning her wedding. The pair decided on a civil ceremony at the Strand Hotel in Limerick overlooking the city and later a reception downstairs in the Shannon Suite on July 19, 2013. Next up was deciding on a theme. After falling in love with a vintage style lace wedding dress it became clear to Elaine that a vintage theme was going to have a big place in her big day. She hired a vintage Beauford car. She purchased pearl bracelets for the bridesmaids and incorporated pearls into her wedding cake. Her flowers were pastel vintage in colour. She used cream vintage birdcages, countless candles, old style photo frames, umbrellas, wicker hanging love hearts, vintage style ‘welcome’ and ‘love is in the air’ hanging signs and beautiful cream love tea-light holders. “My favourite out of everything was our vintage themed candy cart which was built from scratch. My brother built it, I painted it, my brother repainted it because I made a hash of it, my mother made the roof and bunting for it, I made all the jar labels and my friend Lorna stocked it and laid it all out the morning of the wedding,” shared Elaine. 18
INSIDE THE BRIDAL ROOM
The Details Wanting to get her hands more dirty, Elaine – a big DIY person – started putting the personal touches to her big day. With the help of her sister Alison, they made dessert flags. From there they decided to make a wish tree, (her mother, June, did a floral display for the base of the tree and Elaine handmade all the wish tree tags and the wish tree poem.) Her sister Lynsey made a chalkboard which told the story of Elaine and Wayne’s blossoming romance. The bride made address labels for the invitations as well as the rsvp cards. She also made bathroom baskets for the guests and personalised thank you cards for the bridesmaids. Not wanting to leave Wayne out of (or away with) the DIY stuff together they made personalised hangers for all the girls dresses. They spray painted them white, wrote their names on them with glitter glue and then stuck on little blue crystals and a butterfly and tied white ribbon around the top of the hanger. Vintage style photo frames adorned the tables with famous authors’ names instead of table numbers and the couple wrote personalised notes for each guest on the back of their place cards. June, Elaine’s mom, also made the floral centrepiece for the ceremony/top table and other floral arrangements. Elaine (with a little help from family and friends) spent hundreds of hours planning, creating and pulling off one of Limerick’s most personalised and entertaining weddings of the year. Congratulations Elaine and Wayne!
The Meet: Through an app on Facebook called Zoosk. They first began chatting and after a month they met up in person and the rest is history. Wedding Date: July 19 2013. Guests: 120. Band: Final Touch (aka The Lollygaggers). Photographer: Darren Kirwan. Videographer: Focus Video Productions. The Dress: ‘Private Label by G’ purchased in Virginias Bridal. First Dance: ‘A Thousand Years’ by Christina Perri. Any Hiccups: “We had a few but the funniest was as we were getting our photos taken in The People’s Park we were interrupted by two winos who felt the need to pick me roses from the park and come over to give them to me along with some hugs.” Favourite Memory: Elaine – “Spending one on one time with my dad in the house and his speech. He’s an incredible dad and when my mother tied me into my dress. She was such a support the whole way through the process.” Favourite Memory: Wayne – Having all his family together on the day especially his grandmother. Honeymoon: Two weeks on the Lisbon coast. Advice for Brides: Try not to let the day overwhelm you. Delegate to your bridal party beforehand and make sure everyone knows where they are meant to be and what they are supposed to be doing so that the pressure is off ye and ye have time to take it all in. It flies past you so fast and I found it so hard to find time to take everything in at the time that I can’t remember half of what happened on the day. Which is why I think it’s so important to have a fantastic videographer to capture it all!

“A list can be very helpful with organising and planning who will be photographed, when and where.” How long does it take on average to get my pictures back? “I aim to have a viewing available for clients within a month, a disk can be provided at that stage. If an album is required the design and binding of album can take up to 8 weeks.”
My parents are separated but I want pictures with both of them, any suggestions? “Don’t put them on the spot during the wedding; speak with your parents beforehand. You’ll see how they feel about it, in my experience they are always happy to oblige. Don’t forget to inform your photographer.” I hate having my picture taken, how can I be comfortable on the day? “I’d suggest booking a photographer who provides free engagement sessions. Nervous clients concerns can be addressed with expert advice offered to ease tension.”

Not just any kind
of treat
Photos courtesy of Darren Kirwan Photography Every bride & groom would like their day to be extra special and that little bit different. Sarah Keane from Coonagh Co. Limerick and her husband Anthony Kavanagh from Walshisland, Co. Offaly most certainly got that uniqueness, courtesy of Brides of Limerick and The HighNelly Bike Company with a 1921 HighNelly ice cream bike service to keep their guests occupied whilst her photographer, Darren Kirwan, did his work. “As our guests stepped out of the church they were treated to the special surprise of Marty and his HighNelly Bikes ice cream experience. My two year old nephew, Anthony’s 82-year-old granny and everyone in between absolutely loved the bikes and the ice cream. Thanks to HighNelly Bikes and Brides of Limerick for making our special day even more memorable,” shared Sarah. With 220 guests to take care of outside the church it was a prize that really counted on the day. All the guests came out to the surprise of fresh handmade local ice cream served from the 1921 tricycle and the 1900’s his and hers Highnellies which have all been fully refurbished in Limerick specifically to service the wedding market. HighNelly wedding services from Cappamore, Co Limerick supplied the vintage ice cream tricycle along with two full refurbished genuine 1900’s HighNelly bicycles, one for the groom and one for the bride. A photographers dream is to have the correct setting and props, what could be better and more Irish than HighNelly bikes, they also have a full range of Highnelly related favours should you want to go bike crazy. Sarah chose to have the ice cream service outside the church but the service can be provided at the reception if the photographer will be spending his time on location there with the bride and groom, the guests will then be looked after with handmade local ice cream. “I was delighted to help with the prize,” said Marty Mannering of HighNelly Ltd. “The response from the guests as they were getting ice cream was fantastic, we always knew we would be really unique when we built the ice cream tricycles for the Irish wedding market but it’s especially nice to hear it from the guests.” For more information see www.highnelly.ie Call 061 381427 or Email Goeco@eircom.net 22

Romantic Wedding by Lough Derg Photo courtesy of Charlie McGeever Kate Flynn married John Kiely on Friday, June 21, 2013 on the banks of Lough Derg in Killaloe. After nine years together, the pair who adore the outdoors got engaged on the top of Keeper Hill with their two dogs present last October. The couple, who live in Sixmilebridge, Co. Clare but both originally from Limerick, didn’t want an engagement that dragged out so they settled for June the following year. They also didn’t want the traditional wedding and were over the moon when they discovered a hidden gem in Killaloe; AnnaCarriga Estate. Kate, a PE teacher in Youthreach, Limerick, told Brides of Limerick they instantly “fell in love with AnnaCarriga the minute we drove in the first day because it was exactly what we wanted – not like anything we had seen before, it was very natural looking, the setting was fab, and it was right on the water. Also there was none of the fuss of a hotel with it.” Due to the natural surroundings of AnnaCarriga, Kate felt “very relaxed” and knew there and then she was going to get married on Lough Derg. On June 21, John, a university lecturer, married Kate on the grass by the lake in AnnaCarriga. It was magical from start to finish. They retired to the pavilion to have their meal, catered for by Masterchefs, and danced the night away with their guests until later into the morning.

a full blown church event – have their wedding all over again including bridemaids but after running her ideas past Keith he felt if they were to renew their vows at some point he wanted it to be a lot more intimate and more importantly have their friend Helen, a spiritual healer, conduct the ceremony. Cathie let it lie for a while but she knew if she was to organise this she would do it to coincide with her hubby’s 40th birthday and it would all be a surprise. A phone call to Helen solidified the date and soon enough plans for a double celebration were in place. “The Wednesday before I told Keith that I had a few people coming round to help us celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary and asked him to write out a few words about what our marriage meant to him,” shared Cathie. The day was upon them, everything was organised down to the candles and food. People began arriving at 7pm. Keith thought there would be a handful coming and was gob-smacked in a good way to see close friends and family pour into their home. “We placed a quilt on the floor and everyone sat around us in our room, we had planned also for my sister to Skype from Australia,” said Cathie. The lovebirds sat entwined in each other’s legs on the floor. Keith spoke a few words about his love for Cathie. “I couldn’t hold back the tears and it seems that everyone that was in that

BRIDESMAIDS Photo courtesy of Icphotostudio It’s the most important job at the wedding, being a Bridesmaid. You’re there to help out your best friend/sister and the Bride relies on you more than you know. Brides of Limerick asked our Facebook family to give us some suggestions on how a Bridesmaid can help alleviate the pressures of the big day for her bride. “I find that sometimes the Brides are nervous during photos so it’s great when the Bridesmaids make her laugh and help her to relax. If you’re having fun the Bride will to.” Brian of Impressions Photography “Get rid of her wedding jitters by creating a distraction – maybe get her sloshed the week before the wedding or if that’s not an option bring her to the spa.” Shannon Ryan “Aside from helping her chose her dress, do the little stuff with her that her finace won’t want to – stuff like helping her chose the room décor and theme, table plans, choosing the wedding car, the flowers etc.” Lilly Lynch “Throw her the most amazing hen party ever!” Laura Landers

They hit it off and a little after two years of going out together Clifton proposed. The engagement was an absolute surprise to Claireann. “It was Valentine’s Day and I was cooking Clifton a nice meal that evening, but all day he was acting very strange, asking what time would I be home,” recalls Claireann. Rushing home with bags of goodies for a romantic Valentine’s dinner Claireann began to get frustrated when Clifton wouldn’t answer the door. “The house was in darkness in my mind I cursed Clifton as I needed help with all the bags.” She pulled out the keys, opened the door and the place was in darkness.

Wedding Flowers Your wedding day … maybe you see it in a cloud of pink roses, a sea of bright sunflowers, or a pretty scattering of sweet peas. Maybe it’s a frosty winter wonderland, or a festival of summer wild flowers. However you see it, this is your special day and the flowers you choose will play a very important supporting role. Maybe you already know how you want your flowers to look, which flowers to use and in which colours. Or you may have no idea where to start and can’t tell a gerbera from a hydrangea! Either way, we are delighted to spend time with you discussing your ideas, exploring possibilities and even making some suggestions of our own. We can keep it as simple or make it as creative as you like.Your wedding day is as important to us as it is to you – it’s our chance to shine too! Brides are all individuals, and every wedding is different, so whatever shape your wedding takes, we have the flowers and the expertise to make it unique, just like you. Browse the floral wedding packages we offer on www.ringoroses.ie, and then take a look at our photos to see examples of what we can do. Call us any time to make an appointment – our time is yours. MOTHER KNOWS BEST
A Mother of the Bride If it wasn’t for Miriam Canty, Morna Canty reckons she would never have pulled off her wedding day. Miriam is Morna’s wonderful mother. They have a beautiful mother – daughter relationship. Wanting her daughter to have an extra special wedding Miriam offered her services to make Morna’s dream a reality. Morna, a Caherdavin lady by birth, married Patrick Ahern, on Saturday May 11, 2013 at the Holy Trinity Abbey Church in Adare and later celebrated at the Dunraven Arms Hotel. “Since we got engaged mom has been so supportive to us as I had the finals of my professional exams on top of organising the Canty/Ahern bash of the year,” said Morna. “I kept saying sure we have plenty of time but little did I realise the time would fly.” Miriam’s first job was to buy her daughter all the wedding magazines she could for inspiration. She would mark out suggestions and keep wedding supplements. “Mom was really helpful in trying to decide our wedding venue trekking with us, no matter what we asked of her she always helped us out.”
who could be a
Wedding Planner
But it was the week of the actual wedding that Miriam was most helpful. “I was sick with my throat, trying to finalise the last minute things for the wedding and with no voice it was definitely a struggle but again mom was there to help.” Although it was Morna and Patrick’s big day the mother and daughter did get to spend some quality time together. “She helped me get into my dress which was very special and we danced like crazy ladies with my sisters to Tina Turner’s ‘Simply the Best.’
While Morna’s attention was on exams, Miriam had the camera with her at all times to snap pictures of everything and anything she thought would be a nice touch to the wedding. She even successfully trolled the internet for unusual bits. Miriam then took charge of the invitations. “She colour coded excel spreadsheets and updated our RSVP list. Mom also liaised with suppliers on behalf of us taking pressure off us as we only had the weekends free.”
A message to my Mom “My mom is a beautiful lady with a huge heart always putting others first. My mom is selfless, giving and welcomes everybody into her world. There is nothing that my mom wouldn’t do for all of us and we are so lucky to have the parents we have, Dad alike. My mom is always volunteering, giving her time to others and being a massive support to all the family and a rock to her friends. Thank you mom for everything all the small things and the big things but most importantly thank you for being my mom.” Morna Canty 42

THE SOCIAL SIDE OF THINGS
We asked on Facebook and you answered: We asked …
What is the most unique thing you have seen at a wedding that impressed you? You answered … Sharon D Hair and Make-Up artist “I am there the morning of many weddings and see a lot of gifts given to brides from there soon-to-be husbands. One of the nicest has to be a pair of socks in case the bride got cold feet.”
We asked … Claire Gubbins “My wedding cake was made to resemble the ‘wedding cake’ building in Rome where my hubby proposed.” Ellie Casey “Pig on a spit for the mojitos drinks reception.” Susan Flemming “My friend had a popcorn machine in the evening great for munchies later in the evening.”
“I’m getting married next year and don’t want photos to appear on social media.... Is this something I should mention on invite or has anyone else any other solution?” You answered …
Christyna Mulcahy “Oxtail soup for starters. Never seen it being served in a hotel and I was nearly raised on it.” Laura Divine “I was at a wedding recently and all of the sudden the waiters burst out in a song. It was excellent. The singing waiters they are called.”
We asked …
What does a bride do with her engagement ring during the ceremony? You answered …
Lee Photography “We photographed a wedding recently that the bride and groom had popped a note on the invites along the lines of ‘we have hired a professional to capture our memories of our special day, and would love for all our guests to enjoy the day and be truly present with us, so we would ask that leave your camera down during the ceremony and refrain from posting any photos on social media’,” Edel Hickey “Was at a wedding this summer where the priest announced on the altar before the ceremony , ‘ just a few formalities to get out of the way- The bride and groom have requested that no photos appear on any social networking sites’,” Darren Crowley “Write it on the invite for sure.”
Vanessa O’Flynn “Someone told me you put it on your right hand until after the ceremony.” Evelyn Walsh “My sister got married last year and she gave it to her maid of honour and after the church ceremony she put it on.” Sarah Clinton Moriarty “I gave mine to the groom and he put both rings on together. Not sure if he was supposed to but we did it anyway.”

HICKEY’S IRISH PUB A home away from home
Getting married in the Algarve and looking for somewhere to celebrate Irish style? Look no further! Hickey’s Irish Pub is renowned for its Irish hospitality to all couples getting married away from home. The pub, located in Alvor, Portugal, is owned and run by Pat Hickey himself; a Kildimo native. The Hickey team also includes Pat’s daughter Jane, her boyfriend David (a Kerryman) and Dublin man John Sheridan. “I was lucky to set up in Alvor,” said Pat. “Ten years ago I found Alvor, a hidden little gem! It’s a small old fishing village that has expanded but has kept its quaint character.” Pat opened his doors three years ago and hasn’t looked back since. Hickey’s Irish Pub is a roaring success. Lots of Irish couples get married in Alvor every year in the local church and usually hold their reception in different venues nearby. Hickey’s Irish Pub has a rooftop terrace which people use as a get together before the big day and to meet future in laws. It is also used for after wedding parties. They offer full bar service and organise food for the occasion which can range from sandwiches to the famous “Chicken Piri Piri” to suckling pig.
Jane does beauty Aside from working in Hickey’s to make sure all Irish visitors have a fantastic experience while abroad Jane has gotten a little closer to the wedding industry abroad. Seeing a big gap in the wedding beauty market in her area, Jane – a qualified beauty therapist – is using her 10 plus years of experience and now making herself available to brides and their bridal parties for their time in the Algarve and the wedding morning. “I am based in Alvor but available for weddings all over the Algarve. I can travel to your hotel or apartment on the morning of the wedding and I can also bring a hairdresser with me if required. Brides love to hear I’m Irish when booking me. It makes describing their desired look much easier,” said Jane. Jane Hickey Tel: 00351925221331 E-mail: uniqueandchicwedding@gmail.com Facebook: Algarve Unique and Chic Make-Up
And in keeping with the party spirit and wanting to make the bar a more intimate venue for weddings Jane decorates the terrace to a very high standard. They use everything from birdcages to buntings to wishing trees and wells, lanterns to solar lights. They also have a popcorn cart, a stunning vintage ice-cream cart and can source many talented artists that can come to Hickey’s to provide wonderful entertainment for the bride and groom and all their guests. The pub has recently received a “Certificate of Excellence” from Trip Advisor and is currently the No.1 Pub in Alvor. “We make sure everyone who comes to Hickey’s and Alvor remembers it forever,” said Pat. What to look out for when
booking a Photographer Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life. We like to play our part in helping your big day run smoothly and capture your unique story to preserve your memories forever. Our style is designed to create a non-intrusive comfortable flow to the day to ensure that you achieve what you deserve – to enjoy yourselves. A second photographer works in the background getting all those candid shots you love. We love meeting all of our couples prior to their wedding day to hear their plans, work with them to understand their needs and to get to know them a little. We provide free, a pre-wedding/engagement shoot on location/studio with all our wedding packages. This all helps to create a more relaxed, fun and friendly atmosphere for you on your wedding day, as we all know each other that bit better, and the results show in the photographs. Tips when looking for a photographer • Always make sure they are a registered business, full-time professional photographer and not just doing it as a hobby. • Ask what insurance cover they have. They should have Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Insurance as a minimum.
• All professional photographers should have their own website and not just a Facebook page. • Keep a checklist of your photographers, so you can compare packages, pricing etc., and take notes, they are used to it. • Make an appointment to meet with photographers you are interested in, view their photo albums, products and check out their style. Don’t rush, it takes time to pick your photographer. • Don’t be afraid to ask plenty of questions and state what you want. Don’t let the photographer dictate to you. • It’s important that you click and have a good rapport with the photographer; you will be together all day. • Once you’re interested, book with a deposit to secure your date. And very important… Always get a receipt. • Finally, all professional photographers should provide a contract. Make sure everything you agree on is in your contract before you sign it. E.g. location, coverage, time, price, package, products. All contracts should also have a cancellation policy. By Brian Arthurs of Impressions Photography 51

Steve Spade Steve Spade was born in Limerick, and has quickly established himself as a firm favourite on the Irish celebrity circuit. He combines top-drawer sleight of hand skills with hypnosis, psychological subtleties and great comic timing. He has wowed many celebrities, including Mike Tyson, Rhianna and Kevin Spacey. No after-show party is complete without his manipulations – just ask Florence & The Machine, Calvin Harris, Metallica, The Coronas, Glen Hansard, and many more. He stunned 10,000 people with his illusions at The Electric Picnic. After watching him perform actor Kevin Spacey just scratched his head, and asked: “Can I have my watch back?” Luckily Steve only picks pockets for entertainment purposes! Steve recently performed at international soccer player Shane Long’s wedding leaving the newly weds and guests astonished. His daring escapes – being burnt at the stake, or escaping from a sealed box underwater – have garnered national headlines as “Ireland’s Answer to Houdini.” (The Irish Times) Steve is no stranger to television and has appeared on The Daily Show (RTE 1) and TV3’s Come Dine With Me. This year Steve was head hunted by the Discovery Channel to appear on the network performing a 100 ft rope escape. Steve is currently in talks with Sky TV about filming his new six-part TV special. INSIDE A HEN PARTY
A Limerick Hen let loose in The Gossip
The Location: Cork City The Hen: Amy Todd Organised by: Natasha and Brid How many Hens: 21 ladies The Accommodation: The Clarion Hotel, Cork How many nights: One The theme: All girls dressed in black with a flower The biggest surprise: Leesa (another bridesmaid) said she couldn’t make it because she just had a little baby so instead booked Amy a make-up artist – which turned out to be Leesa herself. She brought the baby and the boyfriend so she could go out with the girls. Nice touches: A bag of flat shoes for later in the night courtesy of Natasha’s hubby. Treats: Vodka jelly shots, chocolate willies with popping candy Any keepsakes: Amy’s sister made her a flower that she wore all night on her hand like a corsage and later wore it as her wedding in her hair.
Two of Amy Todd’s closest friends, Natasha and Brid from her college days in CIT got together to plan Amy’s hen party, bringing her back to the city where it all began; Cork. 21 of Amy’s family and friends from Kilmallock, CIT, and the Strand Hotel where she works, made their way to Cork for an unforgettable night of fun and devilment. There was only one man allowed on tour and that was Natasha’s husband, Dave. He surprised Amy by taking photos of her hen night. Things kicked off with some fun games at the Bailey Bar. Amy, who also celebrated her birthday the same night, shares some of the details with us. “The first game was where all the girls gave me jokey presents and as I opened each one I had to guess who got me what. There were some funny presents and some normal ones. Such as my sister in law got me a script DVD and I knew it was from her as we had been to their concert together. My mum in law got me a t-shirt saying I went to New Zealand and found my heart in an English man.” What was the craziest present? “ The maddest present was a baby vest with ‘My milk-shake brings all the boys to the yard’ embroidered on it from my friend Sheila. We love that song.” Everyone then sat down to watch a slideshow of Amy’s life and after a few tears were shed it was time to learn how to make some cocktails. When the girls were a little merrier it was off for a fabulous meal at SOHO restaurant. Amy got a nice surprise when she sat down for her meal. Natasha had made up newsletters as table settings that included an interview with Amy and some pictures and poems. When there was enough soakage consumed it was on to Reardens Bar and Havana Browns for some late night disco dancing. There they met a stag. The groom was carrying around an inflatable pig and all the girls on the hen had to sign it. Reardens also happened to be managed by Amy’s ex, Eddie, but the girls had a great time out dancing for the whole night. “It is possible that one of the boys from the stag may have kissed one of the girls from then hen but I am not saying anymore about that,” laughs Amy. It was one of the best girls nights out Amy has ever had and has great pictures to remember it all. By April Drew 57
HEN PARTIES
HenParties with a Difference We’ve all worn the bits and bobs, eaten the nice meals, drank ourselves silly, danced ourselves silly and fallen into bed in a nice hotel somewhere away from home and it was a hell of a lot of craic. The Bachelorette Party is supposed to be epic so if it’s cocktails and cheesboards your into or strippers and shots here are some ideas for a memorable weekend. April (publisher) Themed weekends Murder mystery weekend parties 80’s Rock and Roll get-up A Mrs. Doyle (go-on go-on) and all her old friends extravaganza A low-key pampering spa weekend (Lackmore Estate) A photo-shoot (including hair and make-up applications) Nude drawing classes (Hen Party Hotties) Drive in movie (Fota island- Cork) Scenic flight experience over Cliffs of Moher, Aran Islands and Galway Bay Hen parties on a budget If the bride is low key and doesn’t want to stay in a hotel with her maids why not have a “Cocktails and Cupcake” party in a house big enough to hold those invited. Limerick Cupcakes can do a great deal on specially made cupcakes for the party and cocktails can be made from scratch. Make the party into a sleepover. If the maids wanted to sex it up a bit call into Thelma and Louises for some fun bits and bobs or how about having someone come to the house to do all the girls make up. (Catherine Hickey Hair and Make-Up) Brides could also stay local, book into The George Boutique Hotel for a night and enjoy the city they grew up in.
Activity driven hen parties Why not surprise the Hen with a Draw a Nude guy activity (Hen Party Hotties Limerick). Roller disco party – Roller Jam on the Ballysimon road is the perfect place for a girly day. Have a hip-hop dancer teach the party revelers a dance routine to a popular tune and recreate the dance during the wedding reception. Build a scrap book – get everyone to bring pictures of the bride and themselves going back as far as they can and get everyone to write messages underneath.
58
Draw a nude is the ultimate hen activity If you are organising a hen party and looking for something to do as a unique day/evening activity Draw a Nude is for you! It is a life drawing session – of a naked guy. Hen Party Hotties arrives at your venue and sets up everything and all material is provided. The subject for the session is a live nude male model who poses for the duration. The Craic is unbelievable! For the first ten minutes there are usually screams, howls, squeals and roars of laughter as well as shocked faces. After a few minutes everyone settles and gets down to business and surprises themselves with their unknown ability to draw! The group will draw three different poses in total, there is a prize for the best drawing which is decided by the bride to be and the male nude model. In between the poses ice breaker fun hen party games are played. The facilitator is present to take photos, take drink orders, provide music and keep the session running smoothly while the group sit back, draw and have the time of their lives. Draw A Nude can take place anywhere, from a rented house or bar to hotel room. We travel anywhere in Ireland to give the class and we can cater for any group size. Just this year Amy branched out into the health and wellness area, focusing a lot on weight loss. Wanting to shed a few pounds herself in January Amy did a detox program called Clean 9. “I did a detox in January and lost 7 pounds in 9 days. To say I was impressed was an understatement,” shared Amy. “I decided to do some research on the products and I was blown away; hence why I decided to become a supplier. Our BOL AD.indd products have helped thousands of people look and feel better! The most popular is our Weight Management range. “

HEALTH
Ask the Expert: Barry O’Connell of Destination Motivation Bride: “I’ve a year to my wedding, when should I start dieting if I want to lose 2 stone?” Barry: “I’m not a fan of diets or fad diets. They usually lead to a drastic or unhealthy weight loss but the weight will come back on with interest once the diet stops. The only way to get the wedding body of your dreams is to get a proper routine of healthy eating and regular exercise.” Bride: “How do I delicately say to my maid of honour that I want her to lose weight to fit into the beautiful dress I bought her?” Barry: “Wow that is a delicate situation. But as the bride you should lead by example. Talk to your maid of honour and tell her that you really want to get into shape for your wedding and ask her to join your endeavour. Just don’t turn into a bridezilla.” Bride: “I’m pretty slim all round but I have a big bum? Any tips on making it smaller before my big day (in 7 months)?” Barry: “You’ve pretty slim but have a big bum... is that not every man’s dream!! Seriously, people genetically put weight on in certain places. Resistance exercises such as lunges and squats are great for getting a nice tight and toned bum for your wedding.” Bride: “What are the things I should be doing now to get in shape for my wedding day in 18 months?” Barry: “Find something that you can do, you can enjoy and something you should stick at between now and your wedding. Get yourself a healthy eating plan and make it a part of your life. Some people think that by not eating altogether it will help them lose weight. This is incredibly bad for the body. Get rid of all soft drinks and start drinking nothing but water. You should also look at your alcohol intake. A pint of beer can have up to 250 calories in it. To burn that off, you would have to jog non-stop of 30 minutes.
Bride: “I’m getting married in six weeks, any quick fix exercise plans to tone up my arms and legs?” Barry: “That’s simple, join Destination Motivation. Join one of our 6 week courses and let us help you get you into tip top wedding shape. Our current record weight loss over 6 weeks currently stands at 32 lbs. We give you food plans to work from, we monitor everyone’s weight as well as their body measurements which is hugely important, especially if that wedding dress needs to be brought in! Although the training can be challenging and might not be for everybody, we have had amazing results so what we do works.
Planning for a baby “First comes love, then comes marriage then comes baby in a baby carriage.” It might not be on the to-do list for a few years but you equally might be thinking of trying for a honeymoon baby. Brides of Limerick’s resident doctor, Dr. Michelle Cooper, a mother of two wonderful boys John and Ben, is here to give some tips to all Limerick brides on what needs to be done to get your body ready for a baby. PREGNANCY MATTERS When planning to achieve pregnancy it is important to reduce risk of harm to the baby, as well as lessening the likelihood of pregnancy-related complications. Having experienced two pregnancies whilst working long hours in the hospital and general practitioner setting I understand the importance of striking a healthy balance between work and home life and the importance of taking care of yourself and your baby in the interim. Folic Acid Folic acid should ideally be taken for twelve weeks before achieving pregnancy, until at least the twelfth week of pregnancy. Folic acid taken before achieving pregnancy can reduce the risk of having a baby with spina bifida, as well as conditions such as cleft lip and palate, congenital heart disease and preterm delivery. Vitamin D Vitamin D supplements are recommended for all pregnant women, breastfeeding women and breastfed babies as only a small amount of vitamin D occurs in food. Alcohol, Smoking & Illicit Substances It is highly recommended that pregnant women refrain from drinking when trying to conceive and when pregnant. Foetal alcohol syndrome, which can have serious physical and mental sequel, can develop in babies born to mothers who drink alcohol. Tobacco contains chemicals which can pass to the baby and slow its growth. Smoking mothers harbour an increased risk of miscarriage, premature delivery and stillbirth. Children born to smoking mothers have a higher risk of ADHD, chest infections, asthma, ear infections and sudden infant death syndrome. The effects of illicit substances are not fully known but it is strongly advised to stop taking drugs before achieving pregnancy. Most pregnancies sail along smoothly without complications. It is important, however, to remain alert to potential dangers and to avoid any risks when considering achieving pregnancy until the safe arrival of your baby. 61

Right Away… DECIDE ON A BUDGET Set a wedding date. Book the church (or civil ceremony) and the reception venue (within the budget). If getting married abroad decide on a location and possibly the services of a wedding planner.
Your eyebrows are the most important feature on your face; your brows are responsible for 70% of your facial expressions. All the more reason to treat them with tender loving care. The correct brow shape can define the shape of your face; good brows can make your face appear slimmer and younger. Over plucked brows can flatten the shape of your face. Having a good brow shape on your wedding day is essential for those photographs that you will be looking at for the rest of your life. What are HD Brows? HD Brows are a seven step brow shaping treatment that involves waxing, tinting, threading using specialist HD Brow products. How often will I need to have them done? This varies per person and the hair growth, on average every four weeks. I would strongly advise that you do not pluck between treatments. The biggest problem I see is over plucking.

Will I get the result I want straight away? Most people get the HD Brow look immediately; however, some people may require a few treatments. Stick with the programme outlined and have patience, your will eventually get the look you want.
MONTHS -
I have over plucked my brows; can I still have HD Brows? Yes, you can be put on a regrowth programme that will train your brows into shape over a course of visits. To speed up your growth there are HD Brow products available that stimulate growth and make your eyebrows appear fuller. The cult product “Grow Baby Grow” proving to be a firm favourite amongst my clients. I also highly recommend a powder palette, to fill in the gaps between treatments. Can I choose a shape? Absolutely, brow shapes are tailored to the individual. You can shade them dark, light, medium etc. Although, we are not a fan of the “scouse brow” around here. Your colouring and face shape are all considered when you are choosing your brow shape. Claire Curtin is a freelance makeup artist and HD Brow guru based in the Limerick area. What is a Professional Make-Up Artist
Professional Make Up Artistry
A Professional Make-Up Artist will have their own website. This is a great way to look at the quality and amount of work they have behind them. When you make a booking with a Professional Make-Up Artist you can be assured that they themselves will arrive on the morning of the wedding in plenty of time and help to create a relaxing and enjoyable morning. First impressions are vital. A Professional Make-Up Artist knows the importance of having a trial. A trial gives the bride a chance to see if you are on the same wave length and also it allows her to see the level of professionalism on offer. A Professional Make-Up Artist will always make a list of any products they have used or note any allergies or specific skin conditions at the trial. This will ensure they can recreate the look perfectly on the morning of the wedding. When making a booking a Professional Make-Up Artist will make sure they have all your contact details and any timings or directions they may need for the morning of the wedding. They will always take a deposit and ensure you receive a receipt. They are happy to be paid any deposits or final payments by cheque. Word of mouth is the greatest form of advertising for any Professional in the Wedding Industry. Make sure the Make-Up Artist you choose has a reputation that precedes her. Bride: “I’m having a summer wedding in Italy next year but I really want a ball gown, am I mad?” Catherine: “No if the style is something you have fallen in love with then I would say go ahead as we have many brides who have worn them and once the hoop is worn underneath it allows air to circulate and keep you cool.”

THE START OF THE REST OF YOUR LIFE
years and still going Strong!
A SNAP-SHOT INSIDE THE FRONT PAGE PHOTO-SHOOT
Mary & Brendan (Tex) O’Regan recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. On 1st June 1957, Mary and Brendan married in St. Joseph’s Church on O’Connell Avenue in Limerick. Here is a verse that was read out at their 50th wedding anniversary and may it guide all our brides and grooms into a happy and fulfilled life together.
Together Still Let me hold your hand, as we go downhill, We’ve shared our strength, and we share it still, It hasn’t been easy, to make the climb, But the way was eased, by your hand in mine. Like the lake, our life, has had ripples too, Ill health and worries, and payments due, With happy pauses, along the way, A graduation, a raise in pay. At the foot of the slope, we will stop and rest, Look back if you will, we’ve been truly blest, We’ve been spared the grief, of being torn apart, By death or divorce, or a broken heart. The view ahead, is one of the best, Just a little farther, and then we can rest, We move more slowly, but together still, Let me hold your hand, as we go downhill.
