LGBT Editor’s Letter Hello and welcome to issue 3 of Irish LGBT Weddings. We are having so much fun putting this magazine together. We just love the variety of weddings that are featured, some intimate and small, others extravagant and elaborate. We can guarantee that you’ll enjoy reading all about them. We’ve also packed in some fabulous articles on how to make your wedding that bit more fun and colourful. Here is a little bit of info on our couples so grab a cuppa (or a glass of wine) and jump right in guys and girls. While sharing a passion for music, Louise and Deirdre fell in love and although it took two decades of knowing each other before they finally tied the knot, their wedding was so special. The girls just recently upgraded their Civil Partnership to a legally binding marriage so they are over the moon. (Pages 6-8) And how about Eoin and Gary’s romantic Christmas wedding. Keeping in with the theme of their jobs (they both work for Aer Lingus), they had a departures board made up that doubled as a seating plan. Now that’s what we call creative! (Pages 12-14) Stunners Emma and Bianca turned their March 2015 Civil Partnership into a marriage in December with a big wedding celebration surrounded by family and friends. Check out Emma’s stunning House of Mooshki ivory dress with blue underneath the layers of tulle. She bought this in Frilly Frocks in Drogheda and it’s one of our favourite wedding dresses of all times. (Pages 20-22)

Lorna and Carrie’s wedding was amazing. It all started with the most amazing of proposals (well two proposals) and everything grew from there. This is one of our favourite all time proposals. You will enjoy this one. (Pages 38-41) Joe and Jason’s love knows no bounds. They had a wonderful intimate wedding at the stunning Annebrook House Hotel in March and the day was captured by the very talented DMC Photography. (Pages 46-48) So what happens when a lieutenant in the Irish Naval Service meets a nurse? You get a great front cover. Grace and Carol are just beautiful, I’m sure you’ll agree. After an amazing, thoughtful proposal at Cork’s Fota Wildlife Park, plans fell quickly into place and they had a fabulous wedding at the Riverside Park Hotel in Enniscorthy. The whole day was captured by Evelyn McNamara of Pinhole Productions. (Pages 53-56) Tony and James are just adorable. We love that they went with matching suits while still incorporating the rainbow colours subtly throughout their big day. We also loved their dance routine involving their families. How special! (Pages 60-62) And finally last but not least Matthew and Sean, this wonderful American couple who were so touched by the passing of the marriage bill last year that they came to Ireland, to Kerry, to get married. We just love their story (and their Aran sweaters). (Pages 64-66) Have a lovely summer and enjoy planning your special day. We look forward to our next batch of couples in our fourth issue but in the mean time keep up to date with couples on our website www.IrishLGBTWeddings.ie

David and Declan’s wedding day oozed elegance and glamour, just check out their attire. Black, white, gold and the initials D and D dominated the personal touches and we also loved their unique seating plan- “Our seating plan was a jigsaw with a picture of us on a beach in Donegal and each piece had a guest’s name on it. The guest then had to find their piece and when they turned it over their table number was on the back.” (Pages 28-31)

PRIDE & JOY

Songstresses Louise Brady and Deirdre Duffy met two decades ago in the Mourne Road Church Choir where both girls shared a passion for singing. They are both from Drimnagh in Dublin and after 21 years their friendship turned into a loving relationship seven years ago, following the sad passing of Deirdre’s brother. “We think he had a helping hand in bringing us together,” Louise remembers. It was Deirdre who popped the question to Louise in February 2014 at the couples’ ‘place’, Carton House. The theme of love and laughter was applied to their wedding date which was set for September 10, 2015 in their favourite venue. Their Carton House ceremony was shared with 75 of their nearest and dearest. Once the venue was decided, it was time to sort wedding attire. Louise talked us through their wedding looks. “I got my David Tutera dress from Fiona Todhunter in Old Bawn.” Deirdre got a beautifully tailored suit made especially for her by Jonathon in A Suit That Fits in Pembroke Street, Dublin.

7

The stunning brides began to plan all other aspects of their day once their attire was sorted. “My friend Anna Hendy Hayden who is a florist in The Shelbourne created our beautiful centerpieces, unity candle display and bouquets. She is amazing.”

Romy McAuley from A Beautiful Ceremony officiated the ceremony for the girls and Creative Cakes in Blanchardstown provided their fabulous three-tiered cake. Louise and Deirdre added their own personal touch to their day with some DIY favours and décor. “We made the candy buffet ourselves. I had great fun buying jars and vases and the sweets, of course! We also created the arrangements for the mantelpieces in the fabulous Morrison Room where the ceremony was held.” The day was also sewn up with heartfelt memories of those passed. “Deirdre’s sister in law Noreen lit a memorial candle at the beginning of the ceremony for Deirdre’s dad Patrick and brother Brian who have both passed away.”

The day was also full of fun aspects, with the girls working hard to impress their guests. “We named each table after a movie we love and then printed photographs of all our guests and attached them to the back of the movie poster corresponding with the table they were on. The photos were all standing on little heart shaped stands and Deirdre’s niece Aoife painted a sign saying ‘find your face to find your place’. All the guests loved them and took them home as souvenirs.” For the girls, good entertainment was key to the perfect day, so they booked a band called Voci, to perform. “Bobby, Sabrina and Jim were one of the highlights of the day. They played for us during the ceremony, pre dinner drinks in the grounds of Carton House and then got everyone up and dancing after dinner.” All of the amazing moments that unfolded throughout the day were captured by Aga from White Tea Photography and recorded discreetly by videographer Brendan from Make My Day Productions. Looking back, the whole day was extremely special for the married pair, with Louise’s dad’s speech being one of her favourite moments. “The entire day was the best day of our lives. The ceremony Romy created for us was so special, the wonderful music all day, being able to declare our love for each other in front of our closest family and friends. My dad’s speech also completely blew me away.”

8

Following a day of love and happiness, the girls flew to Italy and celebrated in the stunning locations; Florence and Lake Garda.

On April 11th, Louise and Deirdre were legally married. “It was very low key. No dressing up. We literally just did the paperwork. As far as we are concerned our wedding day was on the 10th of September but I did shed a tear,” shares Louise.”

We named each table after a movie we love and then printed photographs of all our guests and attached them to the back of the movie poster corresponding with the table they were on.

By Kelly Hynes If you want to be even more stressed as you plan your wedding, look no further than organising wedding favours! For those of you who haven’t a clue what wedding favours are, they are a small gift or token for your guests to say thank you for coming to the wedding and supporting you through a journey that may have brought out the best and understandably, the worst in you! Wedding favours are by no means compulsory, but can add another special touch to your big day. We have put together many different ideas for you to compare and adopt to your own specific tastes and personalities. Ideas that range from sweet treats to alternative DIY projects to give wedding favours an alternative twist. Mini hangover kit These wedding favours are taking the internet by storm! Two painkillers, a packet of chewing gum/mints, a vitamin C supplement in sachets, a mini bottle of water, and a small packet of Alka Seltzer popped into a bag or tin will definitely be appreciated by your guests the next morning. Pot of gold (at the end of the rainbow!) For the couples who would love to incorporate rainbow colours into their wedding theme, this idea works a treat. Fill small plastic cups with chocolate coins (these will be your pot o’ gold), then use different coloured pipe cleaners to create “rainbow” handles for the cups. Lotto tickets/scratch cards Place them in a decorated envelope or card, it could have you and your fiancés names and the date of your wedding perhaps. This will make the lotto tickets more visually appealing and help you to keep your favours in check with your overall wedding theme!

A deck of playing cards is an ideal wedding favour for the classiest of weddings. This favour can be personalised with the couple’s names etc. printed on the deck, and would be ideal for a casino themed wedding. Tuxedo strawberries Strawberries can be decorated with dark and white chocolate to resemble mini tuxedos or mini wedding dresses. Tasty and beautiful to look at! Shot glasses “We tied a knot, now you can have a shot”. Get the party started for your guests by ordering shot glasses with a special message printed on them. “The perfect match” Matches are an all-round classic wedding favour, and it’s easy to see why. Practical, dainty and ready to order, match boxes can be personalised into every wedding theme with whatever details you want. Your names, the date and special moments can be printed on your very own match box.

Low cost wedding favours Plant seeds Buy plant seeds in bulk, then distribute a small amount of seeds into little bags/envelopes etc. Write a quirky pun like “Watch Our Love Grow” on the bags and there you have it, plant seed wedding favours for your guests to plant and you will be remembered for a long time after your wedding.

After meal mints Exactly what it says on the tin, guests will appreciate a mint after a large meal. You can go about this in many ways, if you buy your mints in bulk you can distribute 1-2 mints in little boxes/ tins/bags. Sunglasses Ideal for summer weddings! You can buy sunglasses in Penney’s for as little as €1.50. Put them on display in a box or tray, get a piece of card and write a message that directs your guests to take them! Sweets Simply distribute Ferrero Rocher sweets (or any sweets of your choice) on every person’s seating place on each table. Coffee Buy a large bag of quality grounded coffee, (Bewley’s blend of coffee is popular) and distribute enough for one cup into little brown bags decorated however you like. Wrap them up with a little bit of string or ribbon and you have a rustic party favour. Donation to charity Guests may not always take much notice of wedding favours. To avoid seeing your favours being left on tables, why not make a thoughtful gesture to a charity. Some charities send out personalised cards that state your donation, which you can then place on your tables of your guests. If you or your partner has been directly affected by a particular charity, this can be a very special and meaningful acknowledgement to make on your wedding day.

PRIDE & JOY

Photos courtesy of Sarah Tracey Photography

For Eóin Curran and Gary Martin, a work night out in Dublin was more than they bargained for and all in the name of romance. Eóin is from Dublin and Gary is a Belfast native but they are now living in Ashbourne, Co. Meath. They both work for Aer Lingus. Eóin is a Safety Instructor and Cabin Manager while Gary is a Team Manager for inflight Services. They own two furry friends, Lois, a whippet cross breed pooch and Jet, a parson russell terrier. The prospect of marriage was hinted at throughout the relationship. Gary: “I said to Eóin on a night out in Belfast that I’d love to get married.” Eóin: “Gary beat me to it, I was planning on asking him in the summer of 2014 but he surprised me at home in September 2013.”

PERSONAL TOUCHES The couple went for a colour scheme of purples and silver, and as they are both Aer Lingus employees, the theme of aviation made an exclusive appearance in their ceremony leaflet, seating plan and invitations. “We made a departures board which was projected onto a screen in the dining hall to advise our guests what table (destination) they were seated at.” The invitations were designed by Serendipity Beyond Design. The lads got their suits in Hugo Boss, Dublin. “We got our groomsmen and best men suits in Next and we got our groomsmaid’s dresses online. As Eóin and Gary’s wedding took place in the run up to Christmas, they also included this theme in their flowers. “We love Christmas and went for small bouquets and button holes of acorns, holly/berries and some other flowers I couldn’t name from Ashbourne Flowers by Freda.” Eóin’s aunt Noeleen specially made the wedding cake for the grooms to be. The cake topper was by Top Art cake toppers. “Eóin’s cousin Ciara also made some lovely favours for us, which included her flying to London to get some personalised M&M’s for the cake and small Lindt chocolate figures like snowmen and Santa surrounded by M&Ms for the favours, which was our little nod to the pride flag as we had colours from the flag through the M&Ms.” When it came to music, Eóin and Gary mixed and matched throughout their day. “We used a string quartet in the chapel called Bohemian Strings, our harpist for reception was Orla Fallon from Celtic Women and our band was the absolutely fantastic Early House.” The first dance was “about 30 seconds of Celine Dion’s “If That’s What it Takes” (Gary’s choice) which mixed into “Shut up and Dance” by Walk the moon (Eóin’s choice).

13

A date was set for December 12, 2015, and the Brooklodge and Wells Spa Hotel, Aughrim, Co. Wicklow was their chosen venue. Miriam Fitzgerald from Spiritual Ceremonies officiated their ceremony and the day was captured on video by East Coast Video and their photographer was Sarah Tracey Photography.

CHERISHED MOMENTS Gary: “Seeing Eóin at the chapel, seeing Lois and Jet and getting some photos with them, dancing, dinner, and having a brilliant time.” Eóin: “The ceremony, the music, the speeches and all the dancing and memories we made. And of course Lois and Jet swinging by.” The grooms planned to go all out for their honeymoon, “we had a mini-moon which we booked on Aer Lingus, and flew to Vienna. We stayed in Vienna and Bratislava. We’ll soon be heading from London to Vancouver and taking a celebrity cruise up the Alaskan Coast and then flying home from Anchorage via a brief stop in Seattle.

14

“My mam and dad, Catherine and John, were fantastic in all of the help and support they gave us. Gary’s brother Dave who also married his partner Colin in 2014 were a great help to us too,” shares Eóin.

“The most wonderful experience of my life. Best ever!!! ” xx David “Loved it” xx Stephen

How to keep the

party going all weekend

By Kelly Hynes As if planning one whole day of celebration wasn’t hard enough, it is custom to plan festivities and entertainment for the following day. There are two main arguments for and against organising a party the day after the wedding:

18

Argument For Your family and friends are all in the same place at the same time! We all know how rare it is to gather all your loved ones together so why not make the most of this opportunity and party on together without all the stress of what was yesterday. It can be sometimes said that the day after the wedding is “better craic” than the actual wedding! People who met at the wedding are still getting to know each other. You have something to look forward to after the hype of your wedding is over, you can unwind and it also means you can spend extra time with your friends and family before everyone goes home.

Argument Against Expecting your guests to pay for another night out after your wedding is unfair, everyone is tired, and they’ve forked out on an outfit and present for you already. The couple have already had to organise their wedding and the last thing they want to do is organise and pay for another day out. Both arguments have good points, but organising a party for the day after your wedding does not have to be a strain, simply telling everyone to gather in the local pub the following day can be the best solution to the day after your wedding. Weddings on bank holiday weekends are ideal for partying the day after, as no one is in a rush back to work. Having said that, there are loads of ideas out there to suit all your guest’s schedules and budgets. The most important thing to remember when planning a do for the day after- is to keep it casual!

Some popular ideas for the day after your wedding •

Organise a lunch or a brunch for family, friends etc. perfect for small weddings

Refreshments or canape reception in a hotel

Have a barbecue at your own home or a friend’s house

A karaoke night is a sure way to give everyone a great laugh and means no one can be shy for too long!

Organise traditional music/a band/DJ for your local pub

Eight adorable

LGBT wedding trends of 2016 By Kelly Hynes

1

Two thirds of LGBT couples are signifying their engagement with two rings-one for each partner. Whether you go for two rings or one makes no difference, it totally depends on if you want to have that ring on your finger! There are plenty of styles of engagement bands out there to add a special touch to you and your partner’s left hands. Proposing with a watch is also a popular trend for many LGBT couples.

2 3

Showing your personality-whether it’s choosing different styles for each of your suits/dresses, wearing different coloured shoes or just adding your own unique flair. 2016 couples are contrasting their wedding attire and accessories to express themselves.

Ceremony seating: You may have come across rustic signs outside ceremony venues with phrases such as “Choose a seat, not a side, either way it’s for a bride” or “grooms side” with two arrows pointing at both sets of seats to show that the new couple are becoming a unit of one, and it doesn’t matter which side the guests sit at. Prepare to see a lot more of this trend at LGBT weddings. Personal signs are all the craze! What will yours be?

4 5 6 7 8

Walking down the aisle together at the beginning of the ceremony-why not show your unity from the very beginning? Instead of deciding who to give who away, modern couples are opting to link each other’s arms and go all in.

Mixing up centrepieces: Your centrepieces don’t have to be the exact same for each table, you can stick to one solid colour scheme and feature different décor in each centrepiece. Once the main theme of the centrepieces is consistent, the heights, textures and materials don’t have to be exactly identical. Designs with a strong font and wording are dominating images on invitations. Fancy words and graphics are taking the world by storm and they’re being designed as the focal point of wedding invitations. Naked wedding cakes. LGBT couples are going back to basics with keeping the cake icing free and decorating with fresh flowers, showing off the fabulous sponge, cream and jam in the process.

Using candles instead of flowers for decoration-LED candles are making décor possibilities limitless. Between bespoke centrepieces, tall candelabras, and even floating candle decorations-it will make your lighting soft and romantic which is an added bonus.

A Christmas wedding joining two families together was the perfect celebration Emma Behan & Bianca Soares Martins December 28, 2015

20

PRIDE & JOY

Photos courtesy of family members

The place where all good love stories start; Emma Behan and Brazilian native Bianca Soares Martins met on a night out at the George in Dublin and instantly knew they were right for each other. In March 2015 Emma and Bianca had a civil partnership after the Brazilian beauty popped the question. Unfortunately Bianca’s family couldn’t come to Ireland in March so the newlyweds decided to have a second ceremony in December while the family were visiting for Christmas. The marriage equality bill passing in May meant that the girls could make the wedding official and everyone was there to celebrate. They booked Cellbridge Manor Hotel for December 28, 2015.

21

The excitement was building in the lead up to the wedding. The couple decided to go for a rainbow theme with a “bit of a winter wonderland feel to it too.” Bianca designed the invites, printed them and sent them out to 100 of their family and friends.

For their day, Bianca chose to wear a stunning two piece ivory suit with a blue silk top underneath. It was made in The Bridal Lodge in Athy. Emma wore a stunning House of Mooshki short ivory dress with blue underneath the layers of tulle. This dress was bought in Frilly Frocks, Drogheda. Bianca carried a white rose bouquet and Emma opted for a rainbow rose bouquet. There were a few special touches throughout the couples’ day including Caipirinhas (a Brazilian cocktail) for the guests, made by Bianca. They also had a fingerprint tree as their guestbook with rainbow fingerprints. Emma’s dad made a rainbow photo booth for people to use with rainbow and Christmas props. The pair also had charity pins for Down Syndrome as their favours.

Emma’s favourite memory of the day is “coming down the stairs in my dress, seeing Bianca so beautiful waiting at the top of the aisle and finally being married.” For Bianca it was when she recorded a special video before the wedding to send to her sisters who unfortunately couldn’t be there. She also shared that when she “saw Emma come down the aisle looking gorgeous, and when my mam made a personal reading at the ceremony. Those two moments stand out for me.” To officiate the ceremony the girls went with Spiritual Ceremonies and Berenice Farrell was their solemniser. “She put us at ease from the first time we met her. She took time to ask about us both so she could make the ceremony more personal for us. She sent us lots of sample ceremonies and readings and made it all so easy. She performed the ceremony beautifully and all of our guests commented on how lovely the ceremony was.” Both Emma and Bianca had the perfect day and shared their first dance to Jesse Glynne, “Hold my Hand.”

22

For their honeymoon the pair jetted off to Rome for a long weekend in February.

How was your experience with Frilly Frocks? “All the girls at Frilly Frocks were so lovely from the first time I went there. They went out of their way to give me a choice of the Mooshki range which I loved and were able to make any changes to the dress I wanted. I would highly recommend them both for their selection of dresses and their lovely reception they gave us whenever we were there,” shared Emma. www.frillyfrocks.ie - Drogheda

7 reasons why the idea of having an engagement photo shoot is a good one

There are plenty of reasons that can be found for choosing to have an engagement photo shoot and we want to share some of them with you. And as “seven” is believed to be a lucky number, we think it should be enough to make you think twice and call your photographer.

#bondwithphotographer

Just imagine that during one of the most important events in your life you can be photographed by someone you trust. S/he knows which perspective is more beneficial, which pose is not to be taken and that funny-looking smirk you do signals you are deeply touched and will start crying in a second. How do you know that? Well, you have those beautiful pictures of your engagement at home (or used as an element of the wedding décor).

24

#bondwithcouple

#completeness

Having one good thing usually makes you want more. We believe using one photographer to shoot your engagement photos and wedding photos form a wonderful whole.... becoming the first two chapters of your family-life album.

Now try to imagine yourself in your photographer’s shoes. It’s much easier to take pictures of people you have become acquainted with. You became familiar with their reactions, specific gestures and best photo profiles which can be built in from the engagement shoot. You know what kind of photos they prefer from discussions following the first shoot, which enables the photographer to add a personal touch. Last but not least, you become somehow invisible to the couple you photograph and it helps both the couple and you get deeper into the atmosphere of the moment. And now you are ready to tell the story of their big day in a more emotional way.

#lessformal

Having beautiful wedding photos is a must. The special moment shared with the closest ones requires outstanding memorisation. Yet, why not have more casual, warm and intimate images of the significant moment which led to the big day (which you could later show your grandchildren!). Photos of a couple when they feel more relaxed and in more natural situations make for a wonderful and memorable wedding gift to yourself. You’ll appreciate them in the future, we promise.

#may22referendum

Luckily, since May 22 2015 (thanks to the results of the Referendum) a growing number of LGBT couples have decided to get married. Well, the obvious reason to have an engagement photo shoot is simply that now you can!

#intimacy

Almost everyone wants to have something special. Although each wedding photo shoot is unique, an engagement one has more variety to offer as you are not bound by traditional outfits and guests. It offers you both a moment filled with intimacy to be captured, showing the special and unique love that grows between two people who have just decided to make a big step in their relationship.

#weddingelement

Photo presentations, wedding invitations, wedding décor or guestbooks are a significant element of a wedding reception, so why not enrich them in professional and unique snaps from the engagement photo shoot, or treasure them for yourselves of those moments before your big day.

Incorporating the

rainbow

theme into your wedding

By Roisin O’Donoghue

If you and your wife or husband to be want to add the rainbow to your big day but have no idea how to, don’t worry! We recently posted this question on our Facebook page and we received some great responses. Below are a list of ways to bring the colours of pride into your celebrations. Some are subtle, some more extravagant so add as little or as much as you like!

Clothing

This can be something small and simple such as wearing rainbow coloured shoes for either the brides or grooms or for the bridesmaids or groomsmen. Rainbow coloured veils, ties, boutonnieres, socks or even rainbow coloured dresses for the brides or bridesmaids. As for accessories adding rainbow coloured bracelets, earrings, hair clips, cufflinks, sunglasses if the weather is nice or rainbow bouquets can look fabulous.

26

Food

If you haven’t purchased the cake already why not consider a rainbow one? It can either be covered in rainbow icing or one that has a rainbow coloured centre. Or maybe a plain cake decorated with a rainbow coloured ribbon or other little touches such as rainbow flowers. If you decide against that you can always add it to the other parts of your menu. Perhaps a batch of cupcakes, macarons, fizzy drinks or cocktails one in each colour of the rainbow can really brighten any dining table and when set against a plain table cloth can be incredibly eye-catching.

Party Favours and Invitations Something as simple as rainbow wedding invitations and stamps can add a cheerful vibe to the occasion. As for party favours or gifts for bridesmaids, groomsmaids, groomsmen or bridesmen rainbow candles, alcohol flasks or little boxes of rainbow sweets will make for a lovely gift.

Décor

Again this can be as subtle or as over the top as you and your future spouse want. Wall art, lighting, ribbons, lanterns and balloons are simple yet beautiful ways to add the rainbow to the day. You could also have clear balloons filled with multi-coloured confetti that way if they burst you get a lovely colourful explosion! Table runners, cards displaying seating numbers or having the tables and chairs in each colour of the rainbow are also good ways to add the rainbow. If you want to include the rainbow but feel that the shades are too much you can always try pastel shades as these can be less overpowering. Remember it is your special day and you could have everything mentioned above or just one, it’s completely up to you.

By Kelly Hynes Whether its rain, hail or shine, summer is here and it’s officially wedding season! Why are summer weddings so popular? We’ve put together a list of our top reasons why we adore summer weddings, so seize every sunny moment and read on!

Longer days

Time flies when you’re having fun, so it’s no wonder we try to stretch out a wedding day for as long as we can. Having a long stretch in the evening means everyone can savour a lot more of the day. There is nothing more magical than a beautiful sunset melting across the sky to get the night going. Longer days also mean lots of light, which provides some fabulous imagery for your photographer to capture!

Outdoors

Outdoor photos, outdoor drinks reception, al fresco diningnothing can compete with the beauty of nature. If you love the great outdoors, summer is the ultimate season to celebrate your wedding. Whether it’s a marquee, barbeque or garden party, you can rest assure that everyone will enjoy the laid back atmosphere and freedom that comes with an outdoor event.

Flowers

You can’t guarantee sun in our Emerald Isle but you can guarantee a gorgeous, blossoming bouquet of flowers. Summer is high season for accessing flowers in a range of colours and styles so go wild. Your flowers may also be less expensive in summer if it is their season, which is an added bonus!

No jackets needed

There is nothing more thrilling than revealing a bit of flesh without freezing to death in Ireland. It is so liberating to be able to get away with a light clothes in warm weather and nothing puts a stop to your fun like having to carry a jacket around. Summer weddings are the best for ensuring that everyone can wear whatever they want in the hope that they won’t get hypothermia.

Bright colours

People are more open to trying more daring colours in summer like yellows, coral, oranges and blues which can brighten up even the dullest of receptions. Whether it’s your décor, wedding attire or your guest’s outfits, summer colour palettes are bright and cheerful. Even if the darkest cloud in the sky threatens your day, you can relish in the knowledge that your overall look will be bright.

A night out in the big smoke leads to a touch of Irish luck on St. Patrick’s Day David Casey & Declan McFadden February 21, 2016

David Casey, a Waterford native, met Declan McFadden, from Killybegs in Donegal, on a night out in the country’s capital which lead to a romantic walk along Howth pier. Sparks flew and the rest is history. It was a touch of Irish luck on St. Patrick’s Day 2011 when Declan, a sales assistant and comic improviser, proposed to Dave, a dental professional. “My brother and both our friends and family were over for St. Patricks Day. We always have a few drinks and nibbles as the parade passes our apartment and there is a great view from the balcony. That day in front of family and friends, Declan asked me if I would marry him. I was shocked initially being the day that was in it, I was not expecting it but my answer was yes! We were in no rush and had a few holidays while saving for four years before the big day.” The lads set a date for February 21, 2016 at Finnstown Castle, Co. Dublin and in front of 90 friends and family David and Declan professed their love for each other on this winter afternoon. Miriam Fitzgerald of Spiritual Ceremonies officiated the special day and a ring warming ceremony was held where everyone passed around the rings. A sand ceremony was also part of the celebrations. Miriam, who had interviewed the couple separately, read out their answers at the start of the ceremony having people reaching for tissues.

“We tried to keep the scheme classic and elegant. Black white and gold featured strongly, from the invites, suits, flowers, candles and decor. As both our initials start with “D” , D and D ran throughout our wedding, from the invites, to the cupcakes, to the napkins, the decor and signs around the room, we had the barman Damien at Finnstown brew up a special “D&D” cocktail for our guests at the drinks reception. We even had our faces on D&D warm cookies with our canapes and bubbles at our drinks reception.” Andy Moloney from Box Barbers came out the morning of the wedding to style and touch up the couple’s beards and hair.

29

Both gentlemen wore matching classic white tie suits from Aston Formal Wear. “We loved how we looked and felt in them and they were classic black and white, which never dates or ages when you look back on a photograph.” The suits tied in with their classical vintage glamour theme, the colour palette was gold and ivory with touches of black.

PERSONAL TOUCHES The seating plan was creative and unique for Dave and Declan. “Our seating plan was a jigsaw with a picture of us on a beach in Donegal and each piece had a guests name on it. The guest then had to find their piece and when they turned it over their table number was on the back”. “We had Molten Brown favours for everyone. We had signs and quotes that we made up and got printed that were personal to us. I liked our black and gold D&D napkins and we had nice blankets for the smokers with a little note to ‘keep you warm’ when they went outside. A tip would be we added food when the band stopped at 2.30am, everyone loved the extra platters at this time of the morning. Even though they had canapes, a meal and evening food… there’s always room after for a pick after a drink and dance so people thought this was a great idea,” shares David in detail.

30

Their first dance was a spectacular choreographed routine, which received over 25k views on her.ie and the Irish Independent online. “We came up with a mash up of about nine different songs including songs that meant something to us or were by our favourite artists (Michael Jackson and Britney Spears) We had a few dance lessons from Veronica at MyDublin Art.” The following day a buffet and music was organised for the newlyweds and their guests. “It was great fun and everyone was in great form. I would definitely recommend doing something the next day as it keeps the happy buzz going.” Dave and Declan topped off the celebrations with a honeymoon trip to Iceland. “We went to Iceland to see the Northern Lights, and it was the perfect choice, so romantic and lots to do, covered in snow. So lovely...like nowhere we have ever been.”

Declan and David hired the very popular wedding band the Bottle Brothers to entertain their guests and afterwards they also provided the DJ. “the dance floor was full all night, they were absolutely super.

FAVOURITE MEMORIES “I had a few! Just before the ceremony both Dave and I and our two mams got to spend fifteen to twenty minutes in the room chatting and laughing. The ceremony itself was so special; finally getting to marry the man I love in front of our family and friends was a moment I will never forget. And of course our first dance which was such great fun to do especially as none of our guests knew what we had planned,” recalls Declan

31

For David his favourite part was” our mams walking us up the aisle and our dads signing the register. I liked the photo slideshow we had running at the drink reception too. The moment sitting at the top table looking down at our family and friends was pretty amazing too.”

Tell us about working with David Mclean Photography “David McLean was a gentleman to work with. From our first meeting to our pre-shoot (which I would recommend couples do as it saves time on the day), to the day itself. He was professional, un-intrusive and captured all of the natural moments of the day. Wonderful to work with. He printed and framed a picture of us and handed it around during the dessert for people to sign as our guest book.” www.dmcphotography.ie

Location, location, location! Traditional weddings are typically held within the bride’s home area. For LGBT couples, choosing a venue may be more difficult as there are more options when there are two brides/or grooms concerned. If you and your fiancé are from different counties/countries, it can be a challenging decision to make. Here we outline some of the things you can keep in mind when choosing a location.

1. Compromise. Do you want a wedding or a marriage? A marriage means that sometimes sacrifice will have to be made to ensure the happiness of your new spouse. However, this doesn’t mean you should let your wedding dreams be completely dashed! You may find other ways of including different themes into one wedding.

32

For example, if you hope to get married near the sea, but your partner wants a chic ceremony in the city, there may be a possibility of taking your vows near the sea and travelling to a nearby city to enjoy your reception. This depends on the distance of course! If the perfect location cannot be found to suit both partners, a compromise might be to let one person choose the location and the other person select a different aspect of the wedding they care about, e.g. the cake.

you are inviting elderly people or guests with young children who might have to be entertained throughout a long journey. Organising transport home after the reception can be difficult if it is a long distance, which can prevent your guests from relaxing and enjoying your day to the full. Despite this, some travelling will always be necessary and it is impossible to please everyone. Choosing your location may be one of the ultimate decisions in your overall wedding plan, but it is the personal touches added by you that ensure you have the time of your life whatever the location! Irish LGBT Weddings works with some of Ireland’s best wedding venues so check them out today.

BOTTLE BROTHERS

2. Have an open mind when it comes to choosing your location. You have fantasised about your special day since well, forever. Think you have the perfect location already? You might be pleasantly surprised to find what shopping around can offer. Your engagement is the perfect opportunity to explore the various locations and venues. Visiting these venues together is a perfect way to discuss and find out what both of you want for your wedding. Visiting venues also offers the opportunity of meeting their wedding co-ordinator who can be of great assistance and offer valuable information to enhance your big day. Who knows, you might find the perfect location where you least expect it!

3. Consider how much travelling your loved ones will have to endure to make it to your special day. The presence of your families and loved ones at your wedding adds a special touch to your day. When choosing your location, bear in mind that your guests may have to travel a long distance. This is important if

Inspirations for your

Wedding Vows By Roisin O’Donoghue

Wedding vows can be surprisingly frustrating when writing your own. You might think that when it comes to telling your one and only what they mean to you that the words just come naturally. However this is not always the case. While there are the traditional vows of ‘in sickness and in health’ writing your own has become increasingly common particularly among LGBT couples. So if you are struggling to find the right words to express your love there are lots of places to take inspiration.

34

Movies

Romantic films as you might guess are a goldmine for quotes about love. Titanic, The Notebook, Love Actually and Ghost are just some examples. It doesn’t even have to be a romance flick, there are other genres of film with romantic elements that have lovely quotes too. For example Terminator, yes you read that right. The scene where Kyle Reese and Sarah Connor are in the motel and he admits he came across time for her is incredibly romantic. Okay you may not be able to use that exact line but something similar such as ‘I would travel across time for you’ could have just the same effect.

Books

Think of the classics like Sense & Sensibility, Pride & Prejudice or something by the Bronte sisters. If classic literature isn’t your thing think of the novels you read as a teenager or the ones you read now. Maybe Marian Keyes has the answer to your writer’s block. It doesn’t have to be a romantic novel or even a line about love, just one that means something to you.

Poetry

It might seem like an obvious place to gain insight and for good reason. Shakespeare, Pablo Neruda, Maya Angelou or Elizabeth Barrett Browning are popular choices for romantic quotes. You can recite a whole verse or just one line, whatever feels right. Poems can be interpreted in many ways so don’t worry if you think you’re using the wrong quotes in your vows. If it means something to you and it describes your feelings just go for it.

Your Heart

It’s really that simple. Just write from the heart! Think back to when you first met them, was there an instant connection or were you two just friends? What about problems you both faced in your relationship? There are still so many people prejudiced against the LGBT community, you can mention the bigotry you may have faced and how you overcame it together. Look back through old Facebook messages or texts from when you first started dating to help you start thinking.

The above can also be used for the wedding ceremonial passages as well as the vows. It doesn’t have to be a literary masterpiece it just has to be true to you. You could have quotes from every poem and film you know as long as it means something to you it will be great. If you’re still really baffled you can always ask friends and family for some advice.

A mutual interest in theatre e ven tua l ly l ea ds to t wo marri age prop osa ls Lorna Geraghty & Carrie Graham June 23, 2014

PRIDE & JOY

Lorna Geraghty from Bray, Co. Wicklow, first met Carrie Graham from Ballymun, Dublin, online over six years ago and after chatting for a couple of days the pair agreed to meet for a date in Temple bar. They got to know each other through their shared interest in theatre.

In 2011, Lorna and Carrie decided to go on a working holiday to Perth, Western Australia and fell in love with the area so much they have made it their permanent home. After some time there the marriage conversation arose. “After being in Perth for a while we’d been legally recognised as much as we could through Australian law by being registered as defacto partners, but we believed in the sanctity and ceremony of marriage so knew at some point this would be what we wanted to do.” One day, in the first apartment they rented together, Carrie asked Lorna to marry her - of course she said yes! But what Carrie didn’t know, is that Lorna had been planning a proposal of her own! Lorna organised a mystery day for Carrie – sending flowers and lunch to her office, sending her secret addresses to be sent for a massage and then arranged for a driver to pick her up in a limo to bring her on a mystery drive. Lorna was waiting for Carrie under a tree in King’s Park with tea lights and lanterns where she proposed. Again, it was fate as fireworks literally went off as part of another celebration.

39

Sparks were flying on that faithful night as the couple enjoyed a meal, a production of their favourite play, followed by drinks and dancing until early hours of the morning! “I think we both knew from the first date, it was fate,” recalls Lorna.

Lorna and Carrie tied the knot on June 23, 2014 in Horetown House, Co.Wexford surrounded by 90 of their family and friends. Their theme was inspired by the glam of the 1940s. They used pink (Lorna), purple (Carrie) and green (love) as their main colours and incorporated different textures into their day such as burlap, lace and paper (referrals to theatre and scripts). They also included lots of florals and love birds in the décor. The couple looked amazing on their big day. Lorna wore a beautiful dress from Luv Bridal in Perth. Her mother’s pearl necklace was her ‘something old’ and ‘something borrowed’, her ‘something new’ was a tiffany bracelet Carrie gave her on the morning of the wedding and her ‘something blue’ was a lovebirds infinity anklet engraved with both of their initials. Both her veil and earrings were purchased from etsy. Carrie wore a white shirt by Charles Tyrwhitt, a burlap bow tie from etsy and a pair of trousers from Seed in Perth. Carrie and Lorna designed each others engagement rings before they proposed, coincidently using the same designer – a mutual friend, a jewellery designer at Rosendorff in Perth. The couple chose their wedding jewellery on a cold Christmas evening at Weir and Sons on Grafton Street in Dublin: Lorna choosing a diamond and platinum wedding band, Carrie choosing a gold watch.

40

During the ceremony, the violin was played by David O’Doherty accompanied by Catherina Lemoni-O’Doherty on the piano. The flowers dotted throughout the venue were from the grounds of the house and arranged by the venue. Their amazing cake was made by The Cake Cuppery in Lucan, Dublin.

During the cocktail reception, entertainment was provided by the Bugle Babes, a 1940’s harmony trio. They performed the billboard hits from the golden era of swinging and jive in retro military uniforms. The guests danced the night away to the band, Soul Purpose, followed by a DJ from Dublin DJs. They ended the night with a bang as they pressed a red button to kick start a spectacular fireworks display.

Personal Touches: Lorna and Carrie designed the invitations together and did an amazing job. They also handmade the ceremony booklets. Lorna and her work friends spent days and hours cutting out confetti from scripts of Oscar Wilde (the playwright that originally united the couple). The pair also had small postcards teamed all around their venue with small sayings about them and their relationship. They created directional signposts with their wedding colours and continued the love birds and bunting theme. These signposts started at the nearest town and continued at every turn to the venue, to direct guests to their special day.

41

The happy couple are expecting their first child in October of this year. They will be returning to Ireland for a family Christmas and baby Tadgh’s naming ceremony.

Tell us about your experience working with Savo Photography

Both Lorna and Carrie hope someday that they can be legally married in both countries.

As we live in Australia we do not plan on getting a marriage ‘up grade’ from Irish Civil Partnership as we feel we will only be truly equal when we are legally recognised in both countries. We look forward to the day when our future little one can join us in a small ceremony marking our legal marriage in Perth.

“I don’t think the day would have gone as well as it did without the great support from Eric. We met with him two times prior to the event to coordinate the style and type of photography we would be doing on the day and took time to get to know him, this really helped to settle our nerves and helped to get relaxed and engaging photos. Eric was an absolute legend. He went above and beyond to make us laugh and enjoy ourselves, and our guests mentioned throughout the day how much craic he was – and you’ll have to agree he took some stunning shots. We would highly recommend him to any LGBTI people in Ireland and overseas.” www.savo.ie

ASK THE EXPERT Big Day wedding videography

What should we base our decision on when choosing a videographer? Your choice of videographer should primarily be based on their previous work. Do you like their style, the way they frame shots or the way they edit the final films. It’s so important to be excited about their work. Another aspect to consider is their personality. They’ll be spending a whole day with you, so it’s important you’ll get along! Of course, price is also a consideration but I don’t think it should be the main reason for your choice. But do get a video! In a recent survey, not getting a video was listed as a wedding couple’s biggest regret! I’m concerned about it being a distraction, how can you guarantee that the camera/cameras will be discreet?

42

Firstly, most couples are so engrossed in their day that they seldom notice a videographer. Secondly, I shoot with zoom lenses so I don’t have to get too close and I can observe moments more subtly. I don’t like to pose shots or be too formal. My style is to capture the day naturally, on what is always a very happy day.

Do you interact with the guests? I interact with guests if they interact with me. It would be rude not to! Some people are up for a laugh and like a bit of banter or do a few fun poses but some people get embarrassed by cameras. My job is to notice which type of person is which and adjust my filming accordingly. I don’t want to make people uncomfortable. How much of the wedding do you video? I shoot pretty much everything that happens and then make decisions on what to use during the editing process. I take special effort to capture both sound and vision for the key moments of the day and will shoot these moments with at least 2 cameras.

Castle Durrow By Emma Doran For many people, pets are part of the family so including them on your wedding day adds that personal touch. Nestled in the heart of the Irish countryside, Castle Durrow is one of Ireland’s most luxurious country house hotels. They have become one of the leading wedding venues in the country yet are still one of Irelands best kept secrets.

44

The Castle’s pre Palladian design, formal gardens and breath-taking views are the perfect backdrop for the fairy-tale wedding that you and your guests will never forget. Castle Durrow has 46 beautiful rooms, each individually decorated and an exquisite function room with silk panels and crystal chandeliers, which holds up to 195 guests comfortably. A champagne reception, surrounded by candles and flowers will delight your guests. The Castle’s unique interior with its magnificent staircase, overlooked by a stunning stained glass window is a photographers dream for your wedding photos. Here is a list of some fun ways to include your pets on your special day. Include them in your “Save the Dates” If you’re including a photo on your invitations why not choose a photo that features your pet. It’s a unique and fun way to include them in your celebrations. Have them walk you up the aisle You could start a new tradition and have your dog walk you up the aisle, or at least have them accompany you up the aisle. Can you image the gushes from your guests. Include them in the ceremony as a ring bearer Why not tie the ring around their collar on a piece of ribbon? It’s a sweet way to include your furry friend and is sure to capture all of the guests’ hearts. Or include them as a flower girl escort Having your pet walk down the aisle beside your flower girl is a simple way to include your pet and a bit of fun for the flower girl. Why not attach ribbon or flowers to the lead to make it more chic! Include them in the photos If you don’t think your pet is well behaved enough to be included in the ceremony why not include them in some of the photos afterwards instead. Just make sure it’s ok with the photographer first! In your décor Like John and Wayne from our last issue, why not include your pet in the cake topper? It’s a nice way to include them whether they have made the guest list or not, they won’t be completely forgotten!

Offaly natives Jason and Joe declare their love for each other in Mullingar Jason Bryan & Joe Westman March 23, 2016

PRIDE & JOY

Jason Bryan and Joe Westman began their love story six years ago. It just so happened they were in the right place at the right time, or so they recall. Jason, from Daingean, Co. Offaly is currently studying and Joe, a Tullamore, native is a psychiatric nurse. The pair first set eyes on each other in their local town just over six years ago. After chatting, it wasn’t long before sparks were flying and they arranged to meet again for a date. They went to the cinema to see “Letters to Juliet” followed by a few drinks in a local pub and the rest is history! The pair are now living happily together in Kilcormac, Co. Offaly. One day while romantically strolling around the grotto on the grounds of Charleville Castle, Jason proposed to Joe and of course, he said yes! After five years a date was set and the stunning Annebrook House Hotel in Mullingar was the chosen venue

Joe and Jason shopped locally for their wedding outfits and wore suits from Galvin’s in Tullamore on the day. The groom’s ladie’s dresses were bought in Menarys and My Fair Lady in Tullamore. Surrounded by friends and family, their ceremony was full of love and officiated by Romy McAuley. “Romy made us feel at ease from the very beginning. She was able to make the ceremony fun and enjoyable but at the same time, highlighted the important bits and always emphasised that it was about love.” Their chosen flowers were miss piggy rose (coral) and navy orchids supplied by Aoife from Sheefin Flowers. The wedding cake was made by Orla from Kildare Treats and the invites were sourced from Partyloons. Joe and Jason organised entertainment that kept the floor full all night. “During the ceremony we had a very talented local young lady named Kerrie Penrose accompanied by Jacqui O Meara. The band for the afters was “The Secrets” from Clara, Co. Offaly. They were fabulous and everyone loved them. Every single song they played had people on the floor dancing and they knew how to keep the crowd going. They also provided the DJ.”

47

WEDDING DETAILS

CHERISHED MOMENTS “There is so many, it is hard to pick one. I guess we would have to say the ceremony for two reasons, the first being that we were able to marry the person we loved with all our family and friends around. The second reason is down to Romy Mc Auley from A Beautiful Ceremony Ltd. She was just brilliant and one of the nicest people you could ever meet. We could not have asked more from her. Guest came up to us after the ceremony to tell us how much they loved the ceremony and how they had loved the job Romy did. We highly recommend her to anyone.” The couple chose the song “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz for their first dance. “We chose this song as we felt the words of the song say so much.” Jason and Joe’s wedding guests were in for a very special treat. “For our wedding favours we got Yankee Candles with our names and date of wedding on them.” Also, the unity candle had their family crests on them.

48

A Surprise Proposal at F o ta Wi l d l if e P a r k l e a d s t o a s t u n n i n g spri n g w e d d i n g Grace Fanning & Carol Brady May 6, 2016

Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford.

Grace Fanning, a lieutenant in the Irish naval service from Ballon, Co .Carlow first set eyes on Carol Brady, a general nurse from Cahore, Co.Wexford eight years ago! The pair were playing football against each other and spotted one another across the pitch but it was later on a night out that they got chatting.

54

They had spoken about getting married for a few years and Grace had always wanted to propose. Carol’s favourite animal is the giraffe so Grace bought Carol a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of Fota Wildlife Park as her Christmas present last year. After Grace got the go ahead with her plan from Fota Wildlife Park, the giraffes were the last port of call. As Carol posed for a photo, Grace got down on one knee and asked Carol to marry her. The tears were flowing and “it was an amazing day.”

The date was set for the May 6 and the chosen venue was the stunning Riverside Park Hotel in Enniscorthy,. Invitations were sent out to 190 of the couple’s family and friends. Both ladies looked stunning in ivory dresses. Grace got her dress in Embrace Bridal, Gorey and Carol bought hers in B Couture, Arklow. The flowers were provided by Down the Aisle Designs who were amazing and even helped to incorporate lego men into their nephew’s buttonholes. The cake was very kindly made by Grace’s friend Grace Downing-Pierce, “a four tier cake which included a fab rainbow layer!” The ceremony music was performed by the Quaid Quartet and Noeline Long officiated the ceremony. Grace and Carol shared their first dance to Kodaline’s, “The One.” The reception music was performed by Fiesta and Wexford DJ as all of the guests danced the night away.

Although the ladies chose not to have wedding cars, Grace certainly arrived in style! A brand new John Deere tractor which was kindly provided by TempleTuohy Farm Machinery. Grace’s favourite memory of the day is seeing Carol at the top of the aisle as they hadn’t seen each other’s dresses before. Carol’s favourite memory was “finally getting to marry the girl of my dreams in front of all the people we know and love.” Grace and Carol provided hangover kits for each of their guests which included fizzy drinks, paracetamol, strepsils, chewing gum and most importantly, teabags! They also had a caricature as their guest signing board, “we wrote our own vows and set up our own sweet table.”

55

The couple are just back from their ‘mini moon’ to Alcudia, Mallorca where they spent a week in the sun. They shared that they “are planning a big honeymoon near the end of the year.”

Tell us about your experience with the Riverside Park Hotel. “We honestly cannot speak highly enough of the hotel. From the moment we arrived to the ceremony, until the dancing finished in the early hours, they were fantastic!! Nothing was a hassle and they went above and beyond for us. Our guests have all commented about how professional and friendly the hotel were all day. We would recommend the hotel for all couples getting married.

Hag and Sten dos: The new way to celebrate By Roisin O’Donoghue

58

Hen and stag nights are a tradition of brides and grooms however in the past few years a new trend has developed. Hag and sten dos are fast becoming the chosen way to celebrate the last night of freedom for LGBT couples. So what exactly is a hag or sten do? Well basically they’re a combination of a stag and a hen party where the couple combine their group of friends for one big night out. The groups don’t consist of all men and all women; the couple can celebrate with all of their friends. Common practice is for the group to separate at the start of the night and then reunite at the end or vice versa.

How would you describe the service you provide for LGBT couples getting married? Professional but mostly Fun, Fun, Fun. What are popular dance tunes for weddings these days? It really does vary from couple to couple, but at this particular minute Gala “Free from Desire” seems to be rocking the floors in most situations but again it really depends on the crowd. Gloria Gaynors “I Am What I Am” is also a reliable track.

What advice would you give to a couple when choosing a wedding Dj ? Meet with them, explain exactly what it is you require from them, whether it be to play music after a band or a full day affair with ceremony systems and grand entrances etc. I’m afraid not every Dj has the confidence and M.C. skills to deliver on these services, I would personally also ensure they would have a min of 5 year’s experience as a working Dj . What other services do you provide? Dj’s / Mc’s Up lighting Personalised projected monograms Ceremony P.A. Systems Reception background music Confetti cannons Starlight dance floors Illuminated LOVE sign Contact info John Connolly 086 319 8680 or 01 5584240

Your destination wedding in Italy or Spain... “It takes two to make a dream come true” photo by Desi Lama (desilama.com)

So why should you combine the parties? Well for a few reasons, first being it saves time. As anyone can imagine planning a wedding can be stressful and very time consuming so it’d be better to lessen the headache and just have one big party rather than two separate ones. Second, it saves money. Much like the reason before weddings can be expensive! Stag and hen parties can be too so it makes sense to combine the two as it usually works out cheaper. Third, it brings friends together and the gay community more often than not have a lot of similar friends in common. Alternatively, a hag or sten do is ideal as it may be a chance to get to know your significant other’s friends if you don’t already and if you do you can get to know them a bit better which makes for a more enjoyable time.

Tell us about your business. At soundandlighthire.ie it’s all about the client. Our aim is to bring to reality the expectations of those clients with our various services and products, paying attention to detail is key in delivering the wow factor at any event whether it be a chic vinyl retro Dj with some soft room up lighting or a big rig gig we have the equipment, knowledge and experience to deliver those expectations.

What really gets the crowd going? Interaction Is the key in my opinion, whether it be choosing some well thought out chosen words for a first dance or hyping up the crowd for a grand finale, the various forms of interaction tends to keep a good flow to the evening reception.

Hag and sten dos can be incredible fun as long as you organise some party games to keep everyone entertained. Obviously you shouldn’t be too organised as that will take the fun out of it. Consider things like a dance class or a scavenger hunt or ask your friends for some ideas on what they’d like to do. This will ensure that a good time will be had by all. It’s your last night of freedom so it needs to be fabulous. Some ideas we like are the following: •

Organise a surprise trip.

An ‘ugly’ dress party

A murder mystery weekend

Jumping out of a plane or hot air ballooning

Zorbing can be fun

A night in front of the telly leads TO a future of happiness Tony Mc Cann & James O’Brien February 20, 2016

PRIDE & JOY

ONLINE ROMANCE Tony Mc Cann and James O’ Brien had no idea what fate had instore for them when they got to know each other almost 18 years ago. Tony had moved from Dublin to Wexford as his family had relocated. James is originally from Wexford and so it wasn’t long before they found each other. “We got chatting on ICQ, (an instant messaging type programme like MSN).” After chatting constantly for a number of weeks, the couple finally got to meet each other in person, and ever since that day, Tony and James are inseparable. James works for a mobile phone store and Tony is a security trainer. They are now living together just outside Enniscorthy in Co. Wexford with their four dogs, one cat and a spider!

On that remarkable night, the couple set the date for February 20, 2016 at the Upton Court Hotel, Co. Wexford.

WEDDING PLANS The lads had three significant themes throughout their wedding. First their colour scheme was purple and gold to tie in with the Wexford county colours. Secondly their table plan had a Route 66 theme, as James and Tony have travelled the route twice and last but definitely not least, they incorporated the rainbow theme. “Our cakes and socks were rainbow colours and we both wore “yes equality” cufflinks as well as a lapel pin. Our guest book was one of the large yes equality posters.” The flowers consisted of rainbow roses for the button holes, the best women’s bouquets and the flower girls arrangements. “Our table centre pieces were purple and gold with rainbow roses.” The lads went all out with their wedding cake. “We had two rainbow cakes from “Rakes of Cakes” in Wexford town and our main wedding cake was a two tier chocolate biscuit cake that was made to look like a wedding suit with again the Wexford theme of purple roses and gold dicky bows, this was created by “Daphnes Crazy Cakes” in Bunclody. The wedding attire was a feature of the gold and purple Wexford theme. “We rented all our wedding party suits from Murt Walsh Menswear in Enniscorthy, our wedding outfit consisted of white shirt with white waist coats with purple and gold swirls on it. Our suit was a dark grey suit, both grooms wore gold cravats and the best men, Tony’s father and page boy all wore purple cravats. The best women wore purple dresses.” The groom’s outfits were topped off with their rainbow coloured socks. Tony and James’s wedding rings are titanium with dual black enamel bands which were purchased from Fields jewellers In Dublin. The grooms hired David Waldron who travelled from Arklow to give all the male members of the wedding party a cut throat shave the morning of the wedding. It was a surprise from the loving couple to Tony’s father, the best and the groom’s men. “It was a great buzz just sitting all together in a room in the hotel chatting and having a glass of champagne while being shaved and it certainly helped relax the nerves.”

61

Most engagements are a surprise for only one half of the couple, but for Tony and James it was a surprise for both of them. It was a typical night in front of the telly that got them thinking seriously about making it official. “We were at home one evening watching a program on the forthcoming marriage equality referendum and Tony said that it was something he would like to get involved in so I said go ahead and Tony asked me if it passed would I like to get married and of course I said yes, so Tony said does that mean we are getting married and I said yes it must and then within half an hour we had decided on the date! As a result Tony had not one, but two big announcements to make to his parents, the first was he was getting married and the second was that he was gay and marrying me!” recalls James.

SPECIAL TOUCHES “In the place names cards we hid a scratch card inside and a lucky penny. This was a little thank you favour from us to our guests. We also has a small quiz on how well our guests know us with a prize bottle of champagne.” The couple chose “Stand by Me” as their entrance song, followed by “To Make You Feel my Love” which was sung by Tony’s niece Emma between the readings. While signing of the register, “Run” by Leona Lewis was played and the grooms walked down the aisle to “Over the Rainbow.” The wedding photographer was by John Walsh Photography Enniscorthy and the couple’s videographer was Kamil Films. Invitations were provided by Liz Doran burke of LDB Designs Enniscorthy. Tony’s brother lives in Key West in Florida, so Tony and James visited Key West on their honeymoon. “We booked our flights online and travelled over a week after the wedding to Key West, Tony’s brother had travelled over for the wedding with his friend Carol so we spent our honeymoon being pampered and spoiled by Derek and Carol. We had wanted to go to Las Vegas but changed our mind to a relaxing holiday in the sun, and Key West is amazing for gay couples.”

62

FAMILY AFFAIR The couple went out of their way to involve both of their families as much as possible in their wedding day. “We tried to involve family and friends as much in all aspects of our wedding, from friends creating our handmade invites, seating plan and our wedding cakes, to Jimmy’s sister Catherine who transformed a normal room into something wonderful with her flowers and extra special touches.” “We did a special dance routine. It started with our families, then the two of us separately and then at the end our families joined in again and by the end we had all of our guests on the floor as well. It was created and choreographed by Alan O’ Brien, a well-known dance teacher and we performed it to ‘Just Say Yes’ by Snow Patrol (the yes equality song).” James’s nephew created a box in which Tony and James sealed two letters written to each other the night before the wedding, this box shall be opened on their tenth wedding anniversary. The couple reflected on their favourite memories from the day, Tony’s was “When we both started crying during the ceremony and hugged each other.” While James’s cherished moment was “sitting at the wedding table as a couple now legal in the eyes of the law with all our families and friends clapping for us.”

Our hearts were in Ireland IT’S WHERE WE’D LONGED TO BE... MARRIED! Matthew Skelly & Shawn Quish December 15, 2015

Civil Registration Office, Killarney, Co. Kerry.

64

PRIDE & JOY

Photos courtesy of Tara Donoghue Photography

After a short visit to Ireland, Shawn Quish, a meeting and incentive planner from Tulsa, Oklahoma, was so inspired by Ireland voting yes in the same-sex marriage referendum last May that he returned to his hometown of Dallas, Texas and suggested to his fiancée Matthew Skelly, a self-employed Oracle software consultant from Key West, Florida, that Ireland was the perfect destination for them to tie the knot. A date was quickly set for December 15, 2015 in Killarney, Co. Kerry. They were introduced through a mutual friend and their love blossomed in a restaurant in Dallas, Texas, many moons ago. They have since moved to Dallas and their lives are busy with a constant brood of rescue dogs from the pound. On a romantic skiing trip to Big Sky Resort, Montana in March 2015 Shawn proposed to his partner of 17 years at the top of Lone Peak Mountain in the snow. Matthew said Yes!

65

Shawn recalls, “I was visiting Ireland the week after the vote and joked about Matthew and myself getting married in Ireland while talking with local friends, but it was not legal in the United States. A month later the United States Supreme Court ruled to legalize marriage and the planning started for our big day after 17 years of being together. We had already booked and planned to visit Ireland to research and track Shawn’s family lineage in December of 2015 so it only made sense to get married in Ireland during our visit.”

Sure enough the wedding preparations began. A decision was quickly made to have a small and intimate ceremony with just four of them in attendance on December 15 2015, in the Civil Registration Office in Killarney, Co. Kerry. The Yes vote was a significant event for the couple as “It meant that we were finally able to marry each other in a country that supported equal rights. And we were happy to support Ireland since they support us,” said Shawn. Uniquely, neither of the men decided to wear suits on the day. As the theme of their special day was Irish heritage, they opted for sweaters, shirts, slacks and boots. Perfect for Irish weather in December! For Matthew, the highlight of the day was when a red robin appeared during their photoshoot at Muckross Abbey. “It was very personable and singing and stayed very near us until we left.” The night before they left Ireland, the couple spent a romantic evening in the Radisson Blu Hotel in Galway.

That conversation put both of us at immediate ease with the process as a whole. We were very comfortable with the photo shoot and the process being very natural and at-ease for people who are naturally discreet, like us. The pictures turned out beautiful and the entire event was as natural and relaxed as it could possibly have been. It also didn’t hurt that Dave and I share the same sense of humour. Relaxed, funny, natural, artistic and overall an absolute pleasurable experience made possible by Tara and Dave.” www.taradonoghuephotography.com
