(20) This scholarly article was incredibly useful in learning the culture and social “stigmas” that are associated with body piercings. In the article it goes takes a look at body piercings within a professional setting and informs the reader that any visible body piercings, except for women having their ears pierced, are absolutely frowned upon by any type of interviewer or person of importance. It also stated that numerous companies actually have rules against having or receiving visible body piercings. The information in this article gave us some prospective on the inplications of getting body piercings and the effect they have on a job status. (28) This was quite an interesting article, taking a look at some of the underlying reason why kids and young teenagers get their bodies pierced. It explains that because body piercings are legal at the age of 16 opposed to tattoos in which kids have to wait until 18, teenagers are more likely to experiment with and often abuse piercing for reasons that are deeper than self expression. Some teenagers are piercing their skin as a form of self-mutilation in order to relieve stress and inflict pain on to their bodies. This article was quite shocking to me simply because I had no idea that could have possibly been a reason for someone receiving a piercing.
