elcome to our Imagine Issue! We want you to imagine a beautiful world of fashion where everyone works with passion creating fashions infused with love. Imagine store owners, designers, garment and textile manufacturers all working together to create spectacular designs that let each wearer express herself. Imagine we have the power to preserve beautiful traditional handcraftsmanship. Imagine we simultaneously use modern technology to invent new designs that enhance our well-being and make our world a better place to live.

Edward Kwang, our Managing Director, interviewed store owners who have worked with us more than 10 years. He asked them to imagine an ideal collection for the future and to recall a favorite JSong piece from the past. We would love to continue Edward’s conversation with everyone. So please chime in on facebook, twitter and at jsongteam@ jsongway.com. We are excited about the future. We remain committed to making the highest possible quality fashion. We will grow our NYC Made On Demand Collection while using sustainable fashion to preserve the resources of our planet. We aim to nurture and support the future generation. Our JSong Internship Program allows future fashion talents to practice what they learn in school; and allows JSong to get a fresh point of view from the younger generation. In the future, we will all use even more technology. To prepare for this new reality, JSong is inviting you to join our computer courses. We will post the schedule of computer classes at JSongway.com starting in March 2016. The courses are free and you should reserve early. We want to move forward together. Finally, welcome to our 2016 JSong and . . .Way Spring/Summer Collections inspired by the incredible deep beauty of fresh, ever-changing, rippling water. The collection reflects sparkling inlets, bubbling streams, and rushing rivers by using puffy white frothy ruffles, abstract water drop cutouts, and the water symbol on our NYC map dresses. These features all reflect the glory of our amazing water. My best to you!

Dear Way,

Way Mail

Your show today was outstanding. I hope you don’t mind me pointing out some of the elements I found truly stunning. Of course, your incredible workmanship is always in everything you do. Your choice of white really brought the materials, the pleats, the tucks, the embroidery and the texture into full focus. The asymmetrical wraps and the transformable dresses were very bold and even a little edgy but still elegant and feminine. The delicate v-necks, tiny straps and sequins (yours are complex and understated) are so right-on.You should have a very sale-able collection this year. This is one of your most artistic collections. Thank you so much for inviting me to see it.

Expert’s Way

Clotheslines By Marylou Luther Dear Marylou: Of all the prints you see on the spring runways, which look the most innovative? – J.J.,Kent, OH. Dear J.J: Spring prints are all over the map, from faces at Marc Jacob to designer logos at Lanvin and Loewe, but the map itself resonates with me as being both creative and wearable, even helpful. The bias-cut hand-painted New York City map dress illustrated here is by Way Zen for JSong, who says it was inspired by “the vibrant spirit of New York City, the diverse culture in the neighborhood and the street art, including the art map by Jason Logan.” Think of it as your own personal GPS. The dress, size 4-18, comes in yellow/blue, orange/blue and cream/black for $180. The length of the dress is 42 in., but it can be customized to the length of your choice for an extra $50. The fabric is cotton gauze. For store information, go to jsongway.com. Dear Marylou: Of all the prints and patterns ahead for spring, which do you think has the best chance of lasting? – N.M., Littleton, CO. Dear N.M.: The stripe gets my longevity vote. And it has, in fact, been liked for almost two centuries by those who wear “the sailor shirt.” This horizontal-striped threequarter sleeve jersey shirt in navy and offwhite first turned up in Brittany, France, in 1820 when seamen started wearing these sonamed Marinieres. It is said that the stripes were essential so that men overboard could be spotted more easily. In 1858, the French made the shirt part of the naval uniform and most French sailors still wear them. So do a lot of Americans - on land as well as sea. The French sailor shirt has been worn most famously by Pablo Picasso, Brigitte Bardot, Coco Chanel, who is credited with bringing the style to women’s fashion, and Jean Paul Gaultier, who has made it his uniform, especially for his runs down the runway after his shows. Many fashion historians credit the sailor shirt as the genesis of the “all-American” T-shirt. Because the French jersey shirt is a pullover, the only key differences between it and the T-shirt is the neckline and the horizontal stripes. The striped French shirt has a bateau neckline and the solid-color American T-shirt has a crew neck. Versions of the sailor shirt appeared on many runways for spring, especially in the collections by young designers.

Dear Marylou: What is your pick as the best jacket for travel? – E.D.D., Newark, NJ. Dear E.D.D.: My choice is the new high-tech bomber jacket with individual pockets for a smartphone, passport, sunglasses, blanket, tablet, charger and special sleeves for a cup, headphones and stylus. The hoodie has an eye mask built into it and the sleeves come with built-in gloves. It also has a neck pillow that inflates like a life preserver. This 15-in-1 BauBax travel jacket is the brainchild of Hiral Sanghavi, who conceived it during his many flights from Illinois’ Northwestern University to his home in Berkeley, Ca., where he lives with his wife, Yoganshi Shah. The two drew up a prototype which they put on Kickstarter. In early September, when the Kickstarter campaign ended, they had raised $9,192,055 from 44,949 people in 81 countries, breaking Kickstarter records as it’s most-funded piece of clothing ever. The jacket comes in four styles, ranging from $89 to $120. For more information, go to Kickstarter. com. Dear Marylou: A few months ago I read a quote from designer Tom Ford in which he said Americans are afraid of style. Do you agree? – M.M., Baltimore, MD. Dear M.M.: I think Americans “of a certain age” are afraid of fashion (not style, there’s a difference), but not the Millennials or those in Generation Z. What intrigued me about his statements, which were reported in Lynn Hirschberg’s cover story in the New York Times Magazine, was his quote that “Anything with edge feels wrong right now, but I doubt that will last. The fashion world thrives on irony and bitchiness and meanness.” As the spring/summer runway shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris would seem to prove, clothes with an edge – as Ford expresses it-do indeed seem wrong. At least they were largely missing in a season filled with user-friendly, comfort-driven, don’t-rock-the-boat clothes without a trace of bitchiness and meanness.

IMAGINE JSong by Edward Kwang

We interviewed ten customers who have carried JSong Collections for over 10 years. These partnersin-trade were asked to imagine an ideal collection for their stores. They were also asked to describe their all-time favorite JSong piece.

Odessa Grant - A Touch of Africa, Savannah, GA: Ideal Collection: JSong dresses and suits because, to my customers, JSong represents quality and beautiful embroidered clothing. Favorite Piece: Floor length sleeveless slip dress covered with blossoms used as a wedding dress. This is the first version of on-demand design which cost over $1,000.00. Favorite Piece: #7568 Embroidered dress with beads which JSong produces in another version this season. Good styles are timeless fashion. It came in Black/ white and Chocolate/beige. I own one in Black/white. Mae Buzhardt - Mae’s Boutique, Batesburg, SC: Ideal Collection: Sportswear, dress sets and casual dresses. White linen suits are always the best. Favorite Piece: #11507CS Yarn Embroidered 3 pc suit. Beautiful unique embroidery and the fit is excellent.
