Meet Our Guest Editor

This season we have a new column: 30 Days 30 Ways which was modeled and photographed by real people from New York. Every one of them brought something unique to the shoot. We were in such an “On the Town” mood that we started singing “New York, New York, it’s a Wonderful Town! The Bronx is up, but the Battery’s down.”

After the photo shoot in Manhattan, we took our JSong fashions to the Bronx for a community benefit party. Then we rode across town to Queens with our legendary photographer, Gerardo Somoza. He photographed the JSong and … Way Fall 2013 fashions on my balcony. Finally we went down to the Battery area to shoot the cover page with guest editor, Jeannette Josue, Ms. New York US 2012.

Jeanette has been our partner-in-crime who helped turn this into a New York Issue with a New York state of mind: independent and joyous on every page.

While we were traveling all around Manhattan for photo shoots, the JSong New York Team was taking care of business in our midtown Manhattan Office. Our home is your home and we hope you feel New York is a wonderful town every time you visit JSong.

represent this Empire State as Ms. New York United States 2012 and I want to share the true beauty of my home in this issue.

I

was not ready for the surprise of New York City when I moved to an over-priced crooked 200 square foot studio in an 8th floor walk-up on Avenue B. I must admit my “Ramen Noodle”, “Dollar Store” budget was worth the trade-off. Moving to this “Empire City” was a complete game changer.

I grew up in Jersey City, which was 15 minutes by PATH Train to 33rd Street in NYC. Visiting “The City” so often, I thought I knew what it was all about. I didn’t realize that I was jaded and close-minded. When I began modeling, all I wanted to do was attend NYU, move to a studio in Soho and surround myself with the outwardly expressive fashionistas. However, living here made me experience so much more than fashion.

As New York is an abundant blend of opportunity, culture, history, art, fashion and humanity, so is JSong International. The designs are an intricate combination of embroideries, pretty pleats and the classical silhouette of sportswear. In this issue, you will see a wonderful synergy between the fashions of JSong International designs which reflect love, peace and joy, and my dearest “New York”, a state that gave me the same.

Good Old Blue Eyes said “If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere, It’s up to you New York, New York”. “The Nation’s Greatest City” tested me on multiple occasions and taught me life lessons. For this very reason, I found love, peace and joy within myself. In this very city I landed my dream job as a web TV reporter and pursued a very successful and demanding modeling career. This “Big City” is also the place where I found the best of me, which is volunteering with New York Cares.

I found myself enjoying a quiet walk through Guggenheim Museum of Art, listening to the peaceful concerts at Carnegie Hall, joyfully sitting center row at the colorful Broadway shows and the list goes on. There’s cultural diversity and limitless opportunity which, I believe, are the most attractive aspects of NYC.

Your designs keep me very elegant at all my different events here. Last night I wore an outfit that I bought last year. I bought it in two different colors: Light green and rose. It is three pieces with a nice crystal rhinestone to close the jackets in the front.

I was so excited to see Way’s new paths.

The textures, especially the black and white combinations, were elegant and delicate yet so modern. The silhouettes are very now: the tunic tops over skinny leg pants and the jackets, both long and short. As always, the pieces were exquisitely crafted. I was thrilled to see the graphic inserts and the organic look of the garments. The flowing green shantung dress looked like it was grown rather than sewn. Congratulations!!!!

Our guest editor, Jeannette Josue, has been a model

and is now a web sports TV journalist. Her witty funny tomboy and girly personality is taking over the New York TV world one show at a time. We asked Jeannette to guest edit the 2013 New York Issue because she is that upbeat woman, who loves, wears JSong designs and shares our JSong goal to bring Joy and Song to people.

When you work on a project with Jeannette Josue, there are a few things people want to know. Is she nice? Yes, and kind. Does she wear a lot of make-up?

Yes, but not every day. Does she have a boyfriend and what is he like? Oh, enough about that. At an Asian In NY community event this past February, I witnessed her strong work ethic, heard her inspiring speeches and observed her beautiful presence. And now let’s hear from Jeanette about her life and how she followed her dreams.

Way: How did you find your job with MarblePlay TV? On one hand you are so girly and yet that tomboy side of you makes you an interesting sports reporter.

JJ: I found my job by chance. I worked for MarblePlay TV in the Advertising Department. One day the MarblePlay TV anchor was sick and the producer asked me to stand in. I always aspired to be a news reporter so I took the opportunity and gave it my all.

Luckily, I had some public speaking training and a few acting classes and I performed well enough to secure the job permanently. From that day, I became the MarblePlay TV host.

I am and will always be a tomboy. I’ve always enjoyed the competitiveness and social aspect of sports which is one reason why I enjoy my job as a sports web TV reporter. I spent a large part of my childhood playing sports with my brother. He was and still is a great influence in my life. I played “Lil Gals” basketball. My mother, a Michael Jordan fan, was one of the spectators who nicknamed me “Jeannette Jordan” when I scored 16 straight points in one of my games. At times, I still tie up the laces and hit the courts because it’s my outlet to let off stress and refocus.

Way: Why and how did you become Ms. New York US 2012?

JJ: I entered the Ms. New York United States pageant to make a difference. My platform is sustainability of education for inner city youth through sports. At MarblePlay, I covered some stories on inner city sports organizations. These organizations provide inner city youth with a positive environment where they can receive academic tutoring, counseling, healthy meals and a place to play sports to learn the essence of team work and further develop their confidence. When I learned that some of these organizations had to close because of budgetary reasons, I felt that something should be done. With the support of web media and MarblePlayTV, I knew there was a way to help raise funds for these organizations.

The Ms. United States Organization is known for supporting their titleholders with their platforms through fundraising and raising awareness. I competed for the title and won. From then on, I knew I had a lot of work and a busy schedule ahead. I had a successful reign and raised a large sum for certain organizations.

New York, I hope I made you proud.

Way: Did the title of Ms. New York US help you in any ways?

JJ: The title of Ms. New York US makes me work harder, so it helps me continue to improve in all that I do. For one year, the demanding schedule taught time management, how to be detail orientated and the importance of responsibility and preparedness.

My year as Ms. New York US also allowed me to meet many unique individuals with inspiring stories which truly changed my perspective on life.

It was also very important to take my job seriously. When people hear “Pageant Titleholder”, many underestimate the level of intelligence and the career drive possessed by these women. Part of the job as Ms. New York was to do away with these negative myths and one way to do so is my performance as a reporter.

Way: What is your favorite food?

JJ: French Fries is my kryptonite. I generally eat very healthy but I cannot do without French fries. If you ever hear someone order “an arugula salad and French fries”, it might be me.

Way: What are your favorite restaurants in New York?

JJ: My two favorite places to dine are Le Bernardin and Daniel.

From the decor to the knowledge of food and wine by the staff to the artistic presentation and delicate taste of each dish, these restaurants epitomize the romance in New York dining. I simply love dining there.

Way: You aren’t wearing makeup right now and you look so beautiful – simply amazing. However, you do wear a lot of makeup for public appearances. Any beauty brand you especially like?

JJ: I do wear a lot of makeup at public events, during taping at work and at fashion shows. That’s part of the job. Unfortunately, I don’t know the brands used by the makeup artists. I can tell you that my personal makeup kit, which I’ve nicknamed “Face” and I always carry, has Shiseido Daily Moisturizer, Lancome Mascara, Estee Lauder Double Wear Make-Up Foundation (which lasts for 15 hours) and a BeeCology Natural LipBalm.

For my everyday look, I use simply the “Face” kit.

Way: Since you became Ms. New York, you have supported an organization called Nomi Network. What is the mission of the organization? In what way does Nomi satisfy your soul?

JJ: Nomi Network creates economic opportunities for survivors and women at risk of human trafficking by equipping them with skills to produce goods for the global market place. Human trafficking is more prevalent than we can ever imagine. By supporting Nomi, I can help to change someone else’s life.

Way: Do you have secret ambitions or any red hot interests that we don’t know about? What is your favorite past time?

JJ: Any red hot interests? Hmmm, maybe I’ll reveal that in the next New York Issue. I will share that my favorite pastime

is running. It’s the only time that I am by myself and alone with my thoughts. It’s just me and my sneakers thumping on the pavement. After a great run, most people are exasperated; but I breathe easier.

Way: Where do you see yourself in five years?

JJ: Well, five years ago I certainly didn’t imagine winning the title of Ms. New York US or working as a WebTV reporter. All I do know is that I will continue to be as passionate as I am about doing well at my job, sharing a laugh with my friends, working out and staying fit, making a difference by volunteering and loving my family.

drinks and dinner. I also love to travel and explore with no agenda, especially if it involves physical activity and motion. All these things are a part of my PHP. JJ: One of the most impressive things about you is your desire to give back. With your busy schedule, what motivates you to dedicate your rare free time to volunteering?

EK: If the cause is something I truly care about, I’m committed to helping as much as I can. If the volunteer project involves my training in music or martial arts – it fosters happiness, so everyone wins. I’m very involved with the mission of Best Buddies, which promotes one-to-one friendships with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I love this organization. Every year I headline and curate a benefit concert for them at Carnegie Hall.

JJ: You have already achieved so much as a Wilhelmina model, a philanthropist, a lecturer and music educator at MIT, a prize winning pianist, a 5 time U.S. Champion in Tae Kwon Do. What’s next for you?

EK: There are so many things I still want to do! Right now I’m developing my concert series, Savor Your Senses™. These concerts allow audiences to enjoy music while learning from wine or food experts or experts from other sensory arts. I love performing and sharing with others in an intimate setting that is interactive, casual, and fun.

JJ: Since this is our New York Issue, what New York icon describes you the best?

EK: Carnegie Hall! I’ve performed there four times (fifth concert coming up next spring), and it’s a special experience every time. As a child growing up in a small town in Washington State, I dreamed of playing Carnegie Hall. To me, it represents dreams coming true if you work hard and stay dedicated.

JJ: And as a New Yorker who is always on the move, let’s talk about your fashion style. What is your favorite outfit to wear while on-the-go?

EK: I wear comfortable yoga pants (PRISM Sports makes great ones), bright colored tank tops and slip-on shoes. I’m usually half-running to wherever I go, so easy mobility is my style.

JJ: I’ve interviewed you before and you mentioned your mantra, which is called LifeChord. I’ve started applying it to my own life. Want to share your LifeChord with our readers?

EK: LifeChord™ is a term I created to explain how I weave together the main threads of my life: music, martial arts/fitness, and teaching. These are my Passion, Health and Purpose also called my PHP. Everyone has their own unique LifeChord , which is the combination of each individual’s PHP. When they’re woven together in the right way, they can create harmony and a stronger whole – a stronger life.

JJ: It’s obvious that you take life seriously and strive for achievement but what about Elaine on an off-day? Care to share?

EK: I actually rarely feel like I need a day off because I really love what I do –

Moderate scoop necks flatter big-breasted women: Clotheslines

Dear Marylou: I am a 42-year-old size 8 with a 40DD bra size and would like your advice on which necklines are best for me. One friend says wrap necklines are best. Another says absolutely not. Who’s right? — L.L., Hogansville, Ga. Dear L.L.: Contrary to the word from many wardrobe advisers, wrap necklines, aka surplice-closing necklines, are not endowed with inalienable rights for the well-endowed. That’s the word from the illustrious image consultant (and a self-proclaimed 32DDD) Anthea Liontos, who says that “wrap dresses and big boobs don’t go together because the two sides of the wrap don’t stay together over an ample bosom.”

In dressing anchors for TV, Liontos said wrap dresses in solid colors seemed like a natural go-to. “But I tried them on a variety of body types and they kept opening to reveal a bra — not always a plus for the news,” she said. “At one point I thought to add a hidden closure mechanism (clear snap or hook and eye), but that was even worse because the stress/pull of the wrap never allowed the hidden closures to remain hidden.”

Liontos says she has found that the most flattering necklines for the DD plus size are “low scoop, square (added appeal of seeming modest), wider V-necks (for knits and sweaters), as well as the deeper V created by a button-down shirt, unbuttoned just to the top of the cleavage.

“My personal favorite is the wider low scoop neck because it makes large chests look normal, not outrageous. Of course, ample bosoms often come with ample bodies, so necklines aren’t the only consideration in selecting a flattering style.

“Tell your reader to check out clothes-for-big-breasts.com. This site has some good information.”

The scoop neck dress illustrated here gets my vote as the one most likely to succeed for you. It’s by the New York design wiz Way Zen of JSong, who says she, too, prefers scoop necklines for her big-bosomed customers, adding that a size 41DDD friend walked in as she was considering which dress to sketch for this column. “She was wearing my linen blouse with a moderate scoop neck and she looked great!”

Dear Marylou: What’s the difference between a brogue and an oxford? And a loafer? — G.J., Euclid Dear G.J.: They’re all fashion shoe-ins for fall, all part of the him-for-her gender play ahead. A brogue, sometimes called a wingtip, is a lowheeled shoe with a piece of perforated leather resembling a bird’s wings at the toe. An oxford is, like the wingtip, a lace-up flat, but without the wing perforation. A loafer is a slip-on low-heeled shoe, sometimes with tassels, pennies or buckles.

Dear Marylou: I need a summer dress to wear to work, but I can’t pay more than $100. Please recommend something cool and that won’t require much upkeep. Love + Fashion: New York Style

By Edward Kwang When I first met Layla, the almost three year old daughter of Kamran and Lamecha Nikoufar, she asked, “What’s your favorite color?” I was stunned and amazed. Would a question like this come from a toddler? I told her it was blue.

She said, “I like it too!” Maybe she inherited a fashion gene. Her tall handsome father, the owner of Pumpkin’s Fashion in Brooklyn, first met her beautiful model mom eleven years ago.

They fell in love and wed in 2007.

We recently spoke with them about their life of Love + Fashion in New York City.

How’s your experience bringing up your first child in NYC? Kamran: Basically, whether you are here or in your small hometown, you always want your child to have the best experiences in the best environment. NYC is joyful and fantastic.

Lamecha: This is a good learning experience – something very new to us. In the beginning, we were exhausted and lost lots of sleep over numerous unnecessary worries. For instance, although she is just a toddler, I always worry about the bullies in school. It is the hardest job, but it is a blessing.

How do you keep Pumpkin’s Fashion so appealing after 23 years in the business?

Kamran: I always bring in new and extraordinary merchandise to excite the customers and my pricing is fair. It is important to be honest. If a customer does not look good in certain outfits, I do not lie just to make the sale.

Lamecha: Always treat your customers like family members with more personal contact no matter what race they are.

What is your advice for love and happiness in life?

Lamecha: Love has no boundaries. Mutual understanding is the main key. We feel our love bonding even tighter as we watch Layla grow every day.

Kamran: I never really knew how love could be until I met Lamecha. My whole life changed.

Before I only thought about business and nothing else. Now I’ve found the other side of life. I feel warm and romantic when I realize that I have my love who will always be there for me and I can hold her hand. I can concentrate on my business and I also have a very big goal and mission to look forward to – Layla, Layla, Layla . . .

Pure NV BKT sponsored Hair and Artistic Director Doreen Guarneri created the stunning hairstyles for the JSong and ... Way Fall/Winter 2013 Runway Show.

1. Prime the hair with a light spray of pure NV BKT Humidity Defense Styling Spray (aerosol).

2. Take large 2� sections. Working from the nape upward with a round l l/2� barrel iron, create a soft curl. Let the curl hang, do not pin.

3. When all the hair is set and has cooled, take a 4 inch round section from the crown, high up on the head, twist and pin letting the ends fall loosely, leaving the complete hairline perimeter out.

4. Working from the back, split the hair down the middle into 2 sections.

Take one section, cross it over the middle part and tie it up into the first section. Twist and pin into a location that creates desired volume. Repeat with the other back section.

5. Create a side part in the front and leave it hanging forward toward the end of each eyebrow. Starting on one side, backcomb lightly using pure NV BKT Humidity Defense Hairspray (aerosol), twist and pin up high towards the first section. Repeat on other side. At this point all the ends should be hanging loosely.

7. Take a dime size of pure NV BKT matte pomade. Use the palm of your hands to lightly push product into the ends of the hair to create bulk and volume.

6. Backcomb the last section, maintaining the side part and find a location that sweeps across, creating the look that you desire.

8. Secure any hair that has too much movement and finish with pure NV BKT Ker-argan Shine Spray for gloss.

I couldn’t live anywhere but a global city like NYC. 3. There is a Sumatran restaurant in Queens that I love. 4. I just bought some great things at the Bergdorf sale. 5. Opera – not just at the Met but in off-thewall places like a burlesque club or the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. 6. Celine trousers, skirt, and coat.

Ionia Dunn Lee, Fashion Director Today’s Black Woman Magazine 1. Cultural diversity. It is such fun to learn about different cultures. 2. Yes. I’m inspired to create fashions that include the look of many different cultures. It also gives me a deep desire to travel. 3. My favorite place to eat is in Chinatown.

Fabric: Two different colors for (1) the body and (2) the lining/flap Two half round rings Two lobster claw clasps Two jump rings Four to five feet long chain Two inch ribbon Snap buttons Four rhinestones

Cut Fabrics For the bag: Cut one piece of fabric: 5 ½” x 8 ½”. Repeat for the lining.

For the flap: Cut two pieces: 2 ½” x 4 ½” each.

For the side hook: Cut two 1” ribbon pieces.

Sew the flap 1. Place right sides together. Sew ¼” seam around three sides leaving one 4 1/2” side open.

2. Turn the flap inside out.

Attach the side hook Fold one piece of ribbon around the bottom half of the half ring. Sew the ribbon to secure it.

Sew the body 1. Place right sides of the body and the lining together.

2. Line up one side of the hook, the flap and the other side hook between the fabrics. Sew the top as shown.

3. Open and fold the body lengthwise. Sew all sides

together leaving 1” open on the bottom of the lining.

Pull inside out from that opening. Push the lining back into the bag and close the opening.

Attach the chain 1. Connect a jump ring and a lobster claw clasp to each end of the chain.

2. Attach the jump ring to the side hook. Sew snap buttons for closure.

3. For decoration, sew rhinestones on the flap.
