elcome to the #Future Fashion Issue! The future is here and now. Everyday we experience disruptive changes. To get a sense of direction in this new world, we interviewed three leading thinkers: Constance White, fashion journalist; Belinda David, fashion school educator; and Renee Palmer, fashion industry web developer. See Three Future Questions. Their words shine a bright light on the future and inspire us to see infinite possibilities. We are excited by powerful technology such as social media. Our friends and customers now share photos and ideas on Facebook at JSong International Inc. Recently, we joyfully discovered the photo of Alessia Newton Harrell who wore a JSong suit to meet First Lady Michelle Obama. We are excited to see the social mood shifting to a climate of care and more purposeful living. This new climate offers more wholesome options to design, create and distribute fashions. Our vision at JSong is always to create beautiful fashions to bring Joy and Song to the world. This season, besides our JSong and . . . Way Ready-to-Wear Collections, we are introducing On Demand. On Demand provides customized colors, fabrics and details. Now styles can be truly special for different stores. Store owners can now focus on customer service and the true expression of personal style. We believe in the power of fashion. In this fastchanging world, fashion has a gigantic role to play. It can inspire the wearer to a more beautiful and kind future. Are we ready? Let’s go! We hope you have a successful bright future! -Way Zen facebook.com/jsonginternationalinc twitter.com/jsongway

Way Hi Ed and Way,
Just came back from three weeks in France, five days in Paris and 16 days cruising France on two ships. All my outfits were your designs. I was the best dressed lady on the cruise thanks to JSong. I can’t wait to see your “made on demand” line. I will certainly be one of your clients in the new line. I might use it for wedding anniversaries, luncheons, showers and even for Bridal Fashion Week in New York. I have to look good for the bridal store owners that come to the show. Thank you, JSong!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Dear Way, I was invited to speak to an audience of 30,000 at An Evening of Chinese Culture hosted by the New York Mets. I appeared on the big screen at Citi Field Baseball Stadium in Flushing, NYC, and the annual event was also broadcast live on television. I wore your beautiful red lace dress to receive my community award from the Mets. Hope you like it!

TUNIC Tunics have graced the pages of fashion magazines across the globe for decades. Its recent revival has come from a woman’s desire to look and feel interesting and creative without being too masculine or overtly sexy. The tunic is the current go-to uniform for fashionable women who like comfort. It is a versatile and functional piece that can be layered over cropped or wide leg trousers. Tunics are great worn bare legged or over opaque tights with ankle booties as shown in the JSong Look Book.

BLAZER The timeless blazer is ideal for the “Normcore” aesthetic that is trending this season: fashionable yet unpretentious and minimal. Close attention to the construction and fit when selecting the perfect blazer is a must. The tailored blazer is a piece that offers multiple uses. You can wear it with the matching pant or knee-length pencil skirt for full menswear look, as seen on the runways at Hermes, the Row and Hugo Boss’s Fall/Winter 2014 Shows; or soften it with a beautiful maxi dress or skirt which was so eloquently done by Zac Posen for his Resort 15 Zac Collection. The simplicity and chicness of the perfect tailored blazer never seems to get old.
EMBELLISHED T-SHIRT With a twist on the basic tee, the embellished t-shirt is instantly multifaceted. It can be worn to the office with a pencil skirt; on the weekend with classic denim or cutoffs; or even to yoga to add some true spice to your workout gear. My most sought after embellished tee this season is the JSong Contrast T-Shirt. It is available ready-made or customized in JSong’s new ON DEMAND line. This style offers even more advantage considering the fun you can have with sequins (see page 11) or bright colors (also on page 7).

Three Questions oN Future Fashion for Three Leading Thinkers by Edward Kwang
1. Today technology impacts fashion from designing to distribution. How does that affect you? If technology was not an issue, what would you create? 2. Where do you see the fashion industry in five years? 3. For you personally, what is the most important fashion issue in the future?
1. As a fashion journalist and editorial consultant, I see technology changing the way I engage with the consumer. Furthermore, technology changes so quickly that companies need a constant stream of experts and information to remain current. Ideally, I would create a way for fashion companies to know what customers want in real time. 2. In five years, we’ll change the way fashion is sold. 3. I look forward to seeing how fashion information will be communicated. How will the landscape of fashion media look in five years? Certainly less print and more web, but I’m eager to see what else technology will bring.
Renee Palmer
1. Fashion is a form of art - it existed before any kind of technology or the concept of distribution. In fact, I look at all designers as artists and craftsmen so I would do it exactly the way our ancestors did it - by hand! After all, the first sewing machine didn’t appear until the late 18th century yet history shows us some spectacular fashions, of course, for the upper classes only. 2. Without sounding too pessimistic, I think that aside from specific power brands that can maintain their standing in the market place, the expansion of global distribution retailers will leave very little room for small businesses to survive. All major cities in Europe have branches of the same stores we see in the US and the small independent stores I used to frequent are gone. All the merchandise is the same. The only way for a brand to distinguish itself today is to invest in heavy marketing. 3. Since it’s simply a reality of society that young women are the future for all fashion businesses, I would really like to see some more elements of class, elegance and taste and less sexualized apparel that make young women look almost obscene. We were all young once; we never dressed like what we see in the street today. Of course, there was no media exploitation at that time to teach women that the only way to stand out from the crowd is to dress like a clown. Personal accomplishment, self confidence and self respect come from inside.
Belinda David
1. As an educator, I teach students the traditional hands-on approach to developing their designs. Now I must also teach them fashion technology which includes using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, fashion blogs, and web design. I constantly balance both mediums to better prepare them for the work force. I would also like to teach them how to use sophisticated embroidery machines. 2. In five years, I see the fashion industry using technology in a broader more efficient way to customize
designs for all consumers at affordable prices. 3. My future fashion issue would have to be teaching customers how to recycle their clothing. Designers such as Eileen Fischer have this amazing program that encourages people to recycle the gently used clothing which would otherwise be thrown away. Proceeds from this program help to support women and girls. Fashion is so much bigger than a look and a fabric. Fashion is an art form that can be used to help those who are less advantaged. 34

Way Earth Friend Party
by Alice Chin
On April 22, 2014, JSong International held their annual Earth Day Party to celebrate Earth Day and the grand opening of their new location at 149B West 36th Street in New York City. Designer Way Zen introduced JSong’s new collection of jewelry and accessories handmade by Buddhist nuns from the DongGuanLianYuan Temple (東觀蓮院) in Taiwan. Thirty Earth Friends from various industries, including real estate, organic food, law, music, and fashion, gathered to discuss green living, while enjoying a delicious organic vegetarian

Distinguished guests included legendary fashion writer Marylou Luther, the creative director of The Fashion Group International, editor of the International Fashion Syndicate, and writer of the award-winning Clotheslines column; Diana Lee, Editor-in-Chief of AsianinNY.com; Reverend Donna Swift and Buddhist Reverend Rubing Shi. Two special performances capped off the evening. Janaki Patrik, who looked lovely in JSong’s lotus petal dress in almond, performed a classical Indian dance and Marcos Sola gave a powerful rendition of an aria from the opera Carmen while everyone joined in during the chorus to sing “Toreador!”.
