World Within Worlds With Worlds: A Brief Introduction to Contemporary Comic Studies
Comic books and graphic novels tell stories about superheroes, adventurers and people just like us, but we’re only beginning to really learn how to read them. In this lecture, comic studies scholar and professor of English at Appalachian State University, Craig Fischer, will introduce this new field.

The annual Friends of the Library Book and Author Luncheon features Kate Quinn and Bruce Holsinger. Quinn is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of historical fiction, including her most recent book “Ribbons of Scarlet.” Holsinger is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and teaches at the University of Viriginia. His third novel is entitled “The Gifted School.”

Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of French ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, and his children, Celine and Fabien, are committed to educating the world about our shared home—the water planet. In celebration of Earth Day’s 50th anniversary in April 2020, the Cousteau family will discuss the need to act responsibly and preserve the underwater ecosystems that are so intricately tied to all life on Earth.
