Charlotte Ballet’s Reach program is a community engagement, need-based dance scholarship program designed to make quality dance training accessible.
The program affords children ages 7-13 the opportunity to access high quality dance training in their neighborhoods, free of charge, promoting self-esteem, discipline, a strong work ethic, and, an appreciation for the arts. Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department partners with Charlotte Ballet to promote the program and to provide sites for the classes at five recreation centers: Albemarle Road Recreation Center, Bette Rae Thomas Recreation Center, Ivory Baker Recreation Center, Hickory Grove Recreation Center, and Sugaw Creek Recreation Center.
Open auditions for Reach are held each year and selection is determined based on three criteria - natural abilities/the potential to be trained in dance, financial need, and family commitment to the program. Students selected attend three classes, twice a week for 29 consecutive weeks September through April at one of the five recreation centers.
All first-year students receive dance attire at no charge to their families. Students and their parents receive tickets to select professional dance performances by Charlotte Ballet.
• Increase self-discipline and work ethic
• Provide access to professional dance performances
• Provide audition opportunites
• Enhance socialization and problem solving skills
• Build appreciation for cultural diversity
The Reach program is funded solely through contributions. Your support will provide students with a location for class, uniforms (first year students only), high-quality instruction, accompaniment and most importantly, the opportunity to experience this high-quality program at no cost to the families.
• The diversity of Charlotte Ballet’s professional dancers is critical to our future. With 45% of our professional dancers representing the BIPOC community, Charlotte Ballet hopes to welcome an ever increasing diverse audience to our performances, our Academy and our community engagement programs. Charlotte Ballet is continuing plans designed to educate audiences about the history of ballet and specifically the relationship of the BIPOC community with the art form. We utilized this strategy of educating our audiences during Black History Month with great success across our social channels.
• Charlotte Ballet engaged with Joselli Deans in learnings on the History of Blacks in Dance. Dr. Deans is a former professor of Temple University and has presented her work at scholarly conferences, including at the International Association of Blacks in Dance, the Society of Dance History Scholars and Corps de Ballet International; and has had her work published including on Columbia University’s Library website. Dr. Deans led three sessions for Charlotte Ballet staff, Academy and Reach families, and Board Members in 2021. In 2022, our work continues as we focus on opportunities to research and teach on the history of Blacks in dance in North Carolina.
• Charlotte Ballet is partnering with The Weathers Group to institute training sessions at the Board level centered around broadening diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging paradigms, understanding and optimizing individual leadership styles, and improving internal and external communication styles to encourage embracing new information to develop powerful solutions and become greater advocates for our mission.

Charlotte Ballet’s Educational Theater Performances enable students to experience a professional dance performance in a live theater setting. Held at the Belk Theater, Knight Theater and Center for Dance, these daytime shows are especially geared towards children, offering a preperformance introduction and postperformance Q&A with the dancers. Additionally, Pointers! a multi-media online guide for educators, contains background information on ballet, biographies of dancers, guidelines for theater etiquette and suggested pre- and post-performance student activities. These materials enable teachers to design lesson plans relating the material and prepare the students for their trip to the theater. The Educators Guides also enable teachers to connect Charlotte Ballet programming to competency goals prescribed in the Common Core State Standards and the NC Essential Standards - tying dance to core curriculum subjects like English, Language Arts, Math and Science.
For many, this programming is their first experience as a live audience member - sponsorship of this program will ensure that it remains truly aff rdable and accessible to underserved children in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community. Funding for this program underwrites the cost of attendancewhether for one child or an entire school - and is an effective way to engage in Charlotte Ballet’s educational impact in the community.
For Lecture Demonstrations, Charlotte Ballet’s second company, Charlotte Ballet II, travels to schools for interactive performances in auditoriums, gymnasiums and other public venues. These 60-minute narrated performances feature exerpts from Charlotte Ballet’s current classic and contemporary ballets. Audience participation and a Q&A session make this an exciting program for students who have not experienced dance and our programming brings the art form directly to their schools which minimizes transportation costs and out-of-class time.
Charlotte Ballet offers three residency opportunities: repertory residencies, arts integrated residencies and Dance A Story workshops. Professional dancers and/or teaching artists will spend a day, a week or months at your school in a residency program.
Repertory Residencies are an opportunity for a K-12 dance class to learn Charlotte Ballet’s riveting repertory. Classic and contemporary ballets serve as a catalyst, inspiring student learning through Charlotte Ballet’s repertoire.
Arts Integrated Residencies explore topics from language arts, mathematics, science or social studies curricula, through dance composition and performance.
Dance A Story Workshops are a fun, interactive 45-minute workshop held at your school. Appropriate for elementary age students, Dance A Story integrates kinesthetic learning with reading, introducing children to the world of ballet through classic stories, creative movement and music, including a “prop and costume” show and tell.
Charlotte Ballet Academy, the only school of ballet in the state affiliated with a nationally renowned professional ballet Company, offers classes in ballet, modern, jazz and creative movement for children and adults at state-of-the art locations throughout Mecklenburg County.
Established in 1993, the Academy serves 700 - 1000 students annually and includes a prestigious Trainee program and Summer Intensive. Students of all ages and levels enjoy opportunities to train with renowned faculty and perform alongside professional Charlotte Ballet dancers in productions like the annual Nutcracker at Belk Theater.
Numerous Academy alumni have gone on to dance professionally with some of the nation’s most prestigious ballet companies including New York City Ballet, San Francisco, Atlanta and Houston Ballets, and our own Charlotte Ballet. Many graduates of the Academy’s programs have also gained acceptance into nationally-recognized college and university dance programs such as Indiana University, Fordham University/Alvin Ailey program, University of Oklahoma and University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Netherlands Dance Theatre, Czech National Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal and The Royal Swedish Ballet, and our own Charlotte Ballet.
Charlotte Ballet Academy enjoys collaborative partnership with UNC-Charlotte to provide professional dance training for undergraduate students. This program enables students to train at a professional level while pursuing an undergraduate degree in dance or any other field.
Financial and merit-based scholarships are awarded each year to select students. Additionally, Charlotte Ballet Academy Senior Trainees, those at the highest level of training in the Academy, receive full scholarship, allowing Charlotte Ballet to recruit the most talented aspiring dancers.
