Urban Design Matters Campaign Project Location: Dallas, TX Project Scale: City Wide Project Date: 2010-2011
Urban Design Matters was an education outreach campaign by the City of Dallas funded by an National Endowment for the Arts Grant. I was tasked with developing a campaign that would have multiple parts. The first part was a traveling exhibit and lecture series that identified favorite urban places in Dallas and the components that made them great. The second part was an interactive public game that allowed for citizens to tell us what they liked and disliked about these places. Even the places they love that we didn't have listed. These two components required community surveying, public engagement, research, design and construction of a traveling exhibit and lecture series.
Role: Project Manager Work: Design, Development, Implementation
The final portion was public education with key local stakeholders. The program meant to help community leaders articulate the specific characteristics they want to preserve in their communities or have included. This has led to a stronger dialogue between the planning department and neighborhood associations.

Cities have two different economic sectors. It has the sector whose product is jobs and income and the sector whose product is the cultural identity of place. This second sector is generally small in comparison but no less important. Part of an NEA Grant was aimed at identifying how we can encourage more growth in this sector of musicians, artists, architects, designers, and writer.
Role: Project Manager Work: Design, Development, Implementation
2011 I took on this project and developed a starting point which was to map where those who make up this sector work. The idea being we could develop a guide to help build a network of those in the "creative class." What became a by-product was the organization web showing how all the small organizations were interconnected and could work with each other to harness their power. My responsibilities included developing the public outreach program for nearly 200 organizations and hundreds of individuals, analyzing the data into GIS maps able to visually display information, and empower individuals and organizations to use these networks to grow the "creative class." Knowledge Community 2.0 Project Location: Brownsville, TX Project Scale: Downtown Urban Core Project Date: 2012-Ongoing Role: Co-Project Manager Work: Research, Mapping, Design, Public Event Lead
HARLINGEN
The City of Brownsville, TX and the Ford Foundation extended the opportunity for bcWORKSHOP to engage the public around the topic of the future of the downtown core. It was our concept to bring the local university, University of Texas at Brownsville, to the table in discussion of an urban campus. This Charrette was titled Knowledge Community 2.0. It was my responsibility to build the contextual document for the charrette and forum. I identified the history and growth time line of the downtown core. From that point I worked with a peer to develop the maximum capacity for rehab, infill, and density in new growth of the downtown.

Belden Trail Project Location: Brownsville, TX Project Scale: Neighborhood Project Date: Completion May 2013 Role: Project Planner Work: Community Engagement, Graphic Design, City Liaison
bcWORKSHOP was tapped by the City of Brownsville to help build the first component of a future interconnected pedestrian and bike network. We specifically began with the goal of meeting the community to identify their wants and needs. It was my responsibility to craft the public engagement method and implement the plan. We are currently building the Belden Trail and working with the local neighborhoods along the future trail to take ownership of the space. This includes public art, community gardens, and fundraising for additional amenities the City could not provide.

Community Engagement Projects Better Block - 72hour Ross Avenue Event Dallas, TX 2010 Better Block developed a 72 hour event which worked to prove how a barren street could become alive in 3 days. For 3 days and 2 long nights the Better Block team and local community worked to turn Ross Avenue, a 5 lane (2-2 with a turn lane) into a pedestrian promenade. As a volunteer Better Block team member I worked with the local community's weekly market group to move the market and build impromptu shading structures. Ross Avenue Underpass, NEA Grant Dallas, TX 2010 The City of Dallas used public art funds along with an NEA grant to bring artists in to reclaim the space under a highway underpass. My responsibility was help in identifying quality artists and developing the criteria for the council to judge their entries. Living Plaza Dallas, TX 2011 The City of Dallas' City Hall has a massive desolate plaza between it and the rest of the downtown core of the City. Our department developed an event centered on lunch time engagement meant to demonstrate how an existing under utilized asset can be adapted. I worked on the first six events before moving out of Dallas. The events still continue monthly. Cyclobia Brownsville, TX 2012 The City of Brownsville closed nearly 5 miles of roadway to bike and pedestrian access only. The goal was to show that if the infrastructure was available for biking to be a safe and easy transportation method people would use it. Tens of thousands of residents showed up. I was a volunteer for the City on this project tasked with advertising and helping planning route closures. Better Block - Brownsville Brownsville, TX 2012 The City of Brownsville had run several Better Block events prior to my involvement. The events were centered around their market square and used to draw in residents to the shops and downtown core. I recently joined the Better Block Brownsville group and have worked in a wide range of projects for multiple events. Walk-Brownsville Brownsville, TX 2013 I am currently implementing a community activation project meant to educate the public about how close they are from wonderful places. The project involves publish wayfinding about being within walking distance of great places, parks, and institutions. A "passport" of places is currently being printed.

Municipal Design Studios Private Design Studio (Future) University Design Studio (Future)
Introduction: The Dallas CityDesign Studio, housed within City Hall, blends together the broader design community and the City of Dallas. The purpose of the Dallas CityDesign Studio is to elevate the design consciousness and culture of Dallas, while working to balance social, economic, environmental, and design stainability towards enhancing livability for all Dallas residents. There are four core objectives of the Dallas CityDesign Studio. Raising awareness about the importance of urban design to city building and the future of Dallas. Providing advisory services on urban design issues through development of urban design policies for the city, peer review of signiďŹ cant projects, and input into development applications. Direct urban design services on projects to other departments within the city on signiďŹ cant projects and collaborating on urban design consultations with the City. Development of urban design programs for areas along the Trinity Corridor.
A-4 Future
Method: It is a public private partnership between the Trinity Trust and the City of Dallas. The Trust has given the City a grant made possible by Deedie and Rusty Rose to support the creation and operation of the Studio over a ďŹ ve year period. Over the course of the gift, the City will take an increasing ďŹ scal share of the Studio’s operation with each budget year.

Policy Initiatives Municipal Design Studio Forum Dallas, TX 2010 The Dallas CityDesign Studio is an urban design firm within the City of Dallas. This form of partnership is known as a municipal design studio. In the second year of the Dallas CityDesign Studio I worked to set up a forum for all 16 design studios to meet and discuss their successes and challenges along with the policy needed to create them. Urban Design Principles Dallas, TX 2011 Prior to developing Urban Design Matters, I developed a white paper on best practices in urban design and the principles used by cities to guide their development decision. This white paper led to a list of 11 principles that could be adopted by the City of Dallas as guideposts for the planning and zoning committee. Princeton Form Based Code Princeton, NJ 2009 As a graduate student I presented to the design committee, Princeton Future, a potential use of form based code as a tool to ensure the redevelopment of a multi-block medical complex into a true mixeduse and public space. While the form based code was not adopted the design my team presented is still the vision model as to the type of development desired for Princeton. Affordable Housing Policy Brownsville, TX 2013 Currently hundreds of thousands of Texans live in substandard developments across the Lower Rio Grande Valley. I am leading a planning team to catalogue the numerous plans and recommendations created over the last decade to address the issues within the most impoverished areas known as Colonias. The deliverable will be a database of all plans and recommendations on critical issues, a list of organizations that could pool their funding to work on similar recommendations, point out conflicting recommendations, and develop a policy to allow for counties in the Valley to have additional planning authority to restrict development in areas without access to water, sewers, schools, or health institutions.
