MESSAGES Mayor Commission
A Message from your Mayor Whether it means taking your triathlon training from the treadmill to the street or simply going outside for a neighbourhood stroll, spring is definitely the time to rediscover the outdoor recreational opportunities that Delta has to offer. With the overwhelming data that physical activity is one of the keys to good health, Delta residents are fortunate to have many parks to play in as well as places to walk, run & ride. With its annual show of blossoms & flowers, spring also prompts a return to gardening. If you are between the ages of 5 to 16 years old, it is the time to begin thinking about the Garden Contest I am once again proud to sponsor. Parents, grandparents & friends who enjoy gardening are encouraged to help young Delta residents learn more about planting & cultivating food & flowers. Visit our website at www.delta.ca/gardencontest for more details. Enjoy your spring!

Pool Etiquette & Guidelines Please be aware of the following: • Children under the age of seven must be within arm’s reach of an adult 16+ yrs at all times. • Outside shoes are not allowed on the pool deck; they can track in dirt & germs which contaminate the pool. Please go barefoot or bring non-slip footwear when on the pool deck. Always remember to walk on the deck. • Health regulations require that everyone take a cleansing shower using soap before entering the pool or swirl pool areas. • Our family change rooms are very busy spaces. These rooms are for people with children of the opposite gender than the caregiver & for people with disabilities. • Diving is permitted in the deep end of the main/sunshine pools only.
• Should an injury occur when at the • •
pool, report it to the Lifeguard staff right away. In an emergency follow the directions of the Lifeguard staff. For health & safety please do not go into the pool if you have an illness, head cold, open sores or bandages, or an infection from the ears & eyes.
With a little courtesy, lap swimming can work for everyone. Please: • Always swim to the right of the lane & pass on the left. • Be aware of what is going on in your lane. • Move graciously to a different lane if asked by a lifeguard to do so. • Allow a faster swimmer to pass you. • Move to another lane that is more appropriate for your swimming speed if you are constantly being passed by other swimmers.

Bring Play Back! WHAT’S THE VALUE OF PLAY?
Participaction’s recent campaign, Bring Play Back, encourages the increase of children’s physical activity levels by replacing more sedentary activities with the games and unstructured active play that used to be part of childhood. Play allows youth of all ages to try new things, test boundaries and use their imaginations. And, it’s lots of fun!
Tips on how to Bring Play Back to Delta • Rediscover games like “What Time is it Mr. Wolf?” and “Capture the Flag” • Join intramural activities after school • Try skateboarding • Go for a family walk, swim or bike ride • Challenge the neighbours to a soccer game
• Learn to throw a frisbee • Go skating at your local arena • Make up and practice a dance routine • Start a game of “Dodgeball” • Play tag in the pool
