Porta Sud [ masterplan porta sud bergamo ]

Bergamo | ITALY

The main objective of the Masterplan is to rebuild, regenerate, revitalize and improve a large urban area of the Municipality of Bergamo. The objective of the project is to accompany the city into the future with a new perspective, more appropriate to the times and to local urban needs: the design intervention sees the overcoming of the barrier created by the railways, which in fact divides the city in two, reconnectioning the organic part of the city located at the south with the city center. The transformation of the “Porta Sud” area is therefore foresee thanks to the creation of infrastructures that improve urban connections and offer the urban, architectural and landscaping standards of smart cities: the viability of the city will be improved and integrated thanks to a effective and rapid connection between the different transport systems present. The planivolumetric scheme of the areas will be redesigned, dividing and distributing urban planning in an organic and integrated way in order to enhance the surrounding areas and create high quality urban environments. The city of Bergamo saw the need to invest in the modernization of infrastructure by creating a “smart” city in full respect of the territory, according to the principles of sustainability and territorial integration. My role in this project has been to update the current masterplan according to the new policies and requirements of the administration, these duties contain the correction of plans, 3d, views, etc.

4 Renew and introduce new services to generate a sector with multifunciontal activities.

Program

This comprehensive integration of services aims to propel the city into the future, anticipating the needs of its residents and visitors. The vision is to create a city where accessing essential services is not only convenient but also remarkably efficient, aligning with the concept of the “15-minute city.”

Ground Floor - Intermodal Hub

The ground floor exemplifies the seamless integration of various transportation systems through an innovative Intermodal hub. This hub facilitates efficient and interconnected transfers between different services, revolutionizing the current state of affairs. Furthermore, the train station serves as an urban connector, bridging the gap between two distinct areas of the city. It not only offers convenient transportation options but also provides a unique vantage point to admire the city’s main attraction, known as “Cita Alta.” To enhance public space utilization, the station features a captivating gathering point or “Mirador” atop its structure, allowing people to experience the city from a fresh perspective while enjoying the surrounding environment.

Section A

Intermodal Hub

This initiative seeks to reimagine the current reality surrounding train stations in Italy, which have often been overlooked and insufficiently equipped to cater to the needs of both local residents and incoming visitors. By undertaking this transformation, the aim is to breathe new life into these stations, transforming them into dynamic spaces that not only serve as transportation hubs but also provide welcoming environments that can accommodate the growing influx of tourists and visitors. This holistic approach ensures that train stations become integral parts of the city’s fabric, offering enhanced facilities and amenities that contribute to a positive and memorable experience for all.

The New City Park

3.000 new trees

24.000 sq m of new public space

13 km of new bike and pedestrian roads

450.000 sq m of green areas

The chosen tree species are carefully selected from those already present in various parts of the city, ensuring the preservation of the environmental balance. These species are thoughtfully incorporated into the proposal to establish connections between the existing green open areas, resulting in an improved local ecosystem. By strategically placing these trees, the proposal aims to create a cohesive network that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding natural spaces. This deliberate approach enhances the overall ecological health of the area, promoting biodiversity, and contributing to a more harmonious and sustainable urban environment.

Ground Floor - Intermodal Hub

The pathways within the newly designed city park incorporate gentle slopes, minimizing the incline to ensure easy accessibility for all. These thoughtfully constructed paths enable people to seamlessly traverse the railway lines, which currently act as barriers hindering efficient connections between the two sides of the city. By integrating the park into the urban fabric, it serves as a unifying element that facilitates smooth transitions between various services and the newly introduced residences proposed in the project. The park becomes an integration tool, harmoniously connecting different elements within the city and fostering a sense of cohesion. It not only provides a picturesque environment for leisure and recreation but also acts as a conduit for efficient movement, ensuring that the entire area is easily accessible and interconnected.

Ziguinchor| SENEGAL

The learning course is a journey into knowledge and life. Starting from the natural resources of the place, the children that will attend the new school will be able to experiment a new environment in which nature and lectures meet, allowing a positive impact into their physical and mental growth. Casamance river accompanies them along the path, literally crossing the project: from the welcoming area, through the classrooms, until the dining room and the cultivation gardens, with a constant presence that highlights a new way of learning into a better future. The volumes are distributed along this new canal following the original topographic levels, revealing local materials and constructive techniques typical of Senegalese traditions, with the primary intention to always make the children feel at home, restoring their cultural identity and sense of belonging.

Outlining Ponticelli [ rediscovering the hidden landscape ]

Napoli | ITALY

Outlining Ponticelli is an urban and architectural proposal which main aim is breaking physical and visual barriers using a topographical approach in order to offer inhabitants and citizens a place to interact, share and learn in a unique urban public reality. The horizontal leveling emphasizes geometrical and constructive features of the project, complementing the site and blending to merge with its surroundings to provide a continuity in the project area that will embrace and guide people not just to the project but to the strip itself, giving primacy to the life practices of the inhabitants of Ponticelli. The program embrace the “Genius Loci” of the place and the current needs and traditions of people, proposing activities and services to teach, and share solutions for current sustainable challenges. The physical location where topography and architecture exchange existential forms is where the project wants to provide people the possibility to rediscover their place, the hidden landscape away from reality.

2. Workshops

3. Living water room

4. Commercial area

5. Innovative laboratory

6. Amphitheater

Program

The project provides an area with restaurants, cafes, shops, and rental spaces which profits will be used for the economical maintenance of the public spaces. The laboratories for technological innovation in water management and urban orchards cultivation improve inhabitants cultivation techniques and finally, an open air amphitheater, which is reusing the space previously occupied by the church, now will offer the opportunity to perform social gatherings with cultural and spiritual purposes and experiences.

Playing with topography for creation of dynamic shape that connects different points

Continuous Surface that generates softer transition between the Project edges

The social condenser theory stated that “through architecture and the design of public spaces, it can be influenced the way of human behavior in common shared spaces and scenarios, and therefore, the breaking down and perceived social hierarchies that can create socially equitable spaces and bigger and better relationships between inhabitants.”

Functional Schemes

Lateral pedestrian and bicycle connections to guide users along the strip and into the project

Third Landscape to reproduce the sensation of narrowness on the edges of the project

The proposal considers the existing topography and landscape conditions as the main instrument to convert itself as a social condenser, that takes advantage of diverse landscape elements to generate common spaces.

The project is an adequate setting for the purposes of life of the immediate surroundings, blending with the landscape and offering an unique urban public reality in which the social interactions can happen everywhere

[ main v

visuals ]

Open Air Amphitheater The open-air amphitheater proposed is placed reusing the current space occupied by the church, keeping the tower as a landmark. The decision of making a gathering place in the north part of the project area, was made taking in consideration that is an urban attractor that will behave as a social condenser ideal to act as the north gate of the strip. The seating location is placed using the topography proposed under the bridge, adding in the bottom some commercial areas. The materiality used is hard in the main plaza created in front of the scenario, with a small change along the tower axis with bricks as memory of the old infrastructure replaced, that now acts to stand out the new landmark

Innovative Laboratory The project proposes laboratories for technological innovations in water treatment and urban orchards cultivations placed in the central core of the space, which the main purpose is to create consciousness about the benefits of each one. The central core is supporting the roof, but it is also making the light enter inside, to give light to the space and to the internal orchards. The enclosure selected for this area is curtain wall that its cleanness and transparency makes possible that the materiality still keeps its continuity even in the inside

Living Water Room The living water room is proposed for children to develop water management and correct treatment consciousness in an interactive way. Descending levels and creating and underground area where a game of lights and water create an interest experience for the user of the space. The water playground located on the outside is a way to integrate the youngsters of the surroundings since the water is a natural element that invites to play and is a referent to the ABC water company located on the south part of the site. The materials selected are continuous all along the proposal to give the sensation of flow not just topographical but also reflected on the materiality. To give some porosity to the proposal there are some green areas located under the roof and some soft areas made of porous concrete from recycled roof tiles giving a more natural environment in the bottom.

Workshops An open and covered workshop area is proposed to encourage inhabitants to develop abilities and create economical network chains as producers, sellers, and customers of their own local products. Open and cover workshops areas, independent producers and entrepreneurs research and material exchange spaces are the main areas to highlight from this part of the program. Some natural topographical movements are introduced in the interiors to create passive recreational areas in which people can relax and enjoy. The materiality selected as mentioned before is still continuous and the slopes are made to be an inclusive proposal for all playing with different topographical levels under the roof.
