How much money can I afford to pay for a bull? * It is almost impossible for a producer to pay too much money for a truly outstanding bull. A good bull is one that corrects problems in your herd (i.e., poor milking ability in cows) and increases weaning weights and selling prices of your cattle. The quickest way to make genetic progress in your herd is through purchasing a good bull. Many producers will buy a low-priced bull at a sale or buy a bull through the auction sale ring. While you may get lucky and get a top quality bull --you probably will not. Just because a bull is priced higher does not always mean it is a better bull. However, when you buy from a reputable dealer, he will price bulls based on their genetic potential. The bull producer will price a bull higher because he knows the bull is genetically superior and should pass those traits on to his calves. A good bull positively impacts a herd for a lifetime of heifers, just as a poor bull hurts a herd for years.
