A catalyst in chemistry, can be defined as a substance that precipitates the mutation of another, in other words, it is what causes change. It can also be used in different contexts to refer to what triggers something to occur. I see design as a factor of change, as a stimulus of transformation with a lot of potential to persuade, enrich and empower. I find the idea of a catalyst extremely meaningful, not only as a analogy to design, but as something I can use in my life. I want my work to be the catalyst of my own self-realization, a means to find meaning and growth.

A poem in a foreign language was handed to me without any translation. The task involved exploring both graphic and dimensional translations based on the properties and characteristics of the letterforms. The first stages were very experimental, and the final outcome was hidden for most of the process. Eventually, the translation was given and I had the choice of using it to enrich the experiments or ignore It. Since the poem was about losing one’s purpose in life, I decided to reach into the work of one of my favorite philosophers, Albert Camus. He proposed that the only important question philosophy needs to answer is whether life is worth living or not, an idea that he explores in his essay “The Myth of Sisyphus” and how to deal with the “Absurdity of Life”. Absurdnost is meant to look like a worn out artifact, but Its imperfections are what makes the bottle look unique and interesting. Making the bottle did not aspire to any idea of greatness or timelessness, It simply exists for the sake of my own curiosity and enjoyment, nothing more, nothing less.

Type Specimen designed to promote the typeface Gill Sans by Monotype. While many consider it to be the quintessential British type style, the Gill Sans® typeface family has been used in virtually every country – and for every application imaginable. The reason for Gill Sans’ near ubiquity is because it is an exceptionally distinctive design with a potential range of use that is almost limitless.

GRACEFUL ENIGMA
Pistilli Roman is a typeface collaboratively designed by Herb Lubalin and John Pistilli. Pistilli was a partner with Lubalin in New York City at the firm Sudler & Hennessey from 1949 to 1964. Given the technology of the time when Pistilli Roman was produced, the typeface was only designed and made functional for use on a typositor. Besides Pistilli Roman’s rare appearance inside of the type specimen book titled “Phil’s Photo Book” (published in 1985), it is a largely unknown and mysterious typeface.

36 Days of Type is a project that invites Designers, Illustrators and Graphic Artists to give their particular view on letters and numbers of our alphabet. Each time I would build the basic form of each character and then continued to add elements and alter the shapes to create unique, yet, recognizable letterforms. There was no basic idea other than to experiment and play with the infinite possibilities given by the lack of constraints. It was a fun experience not only to create all these reinterpretations of typography but also to see what other designers around the world did. It was interesting to see so many different versions for each of the characters while trying to create something that would stand out and be distinctively different.

Dreams have always been an intriguing part of the human experience. Cultures around the world have tried to explain what they are, projecting their thoughts and interpretations to make sense out of the unknown. As humans, we have a hard time dealing with ambiguity, It bothers us tremendously, and that is because we have a natural tendency to identify and categorize information in order to navigate the world to survive. With type, I explored the idea of the conscious mind dealing with the unconscious, how does it look like to dream typography? How does giving form to the formless looks like? Based on that premise, a series of posters were designed to advertise a fictional movie along with a trailer. The various explorations provided enough material to come up with a typographic system that worked in conjunction with the thematic of the movie that I called “Hearthlike”, built from what initially were my “hallucinations”.

For almost a century, Lucca Ravioli Co. has been offering imported specialties from Italy and around the world. Located on Valencia Street in San Francisco, California, this Italian deli is well known for products such as wines, cheeses, cold cuts, pasta, and more, but as the name indicates, ravioli is their specialty. Lucca Ravioli has a good reputation among the Bay Area community but lacks the home-like food feeling It tries to convey. The brand name was taken to build a new and more appropriate visual language, embedding a friendlier and warmer feeling to it. I wanted to create a seal that could be easily identified as Italian while keeping a simple and appealing look, flexible enough to be used across different media.

Different times have brought different statements, styles, and techniques to materialize ideas across art, design, and architecture. As different as these fields seem to be, they share a lot in common, they represent the means by which people have expressed their most profound desires. This is a collection of some of those minds (24 of them) and a superficial glimpse to their work and souls, that responded differently to their environment and needs of their times. From rejection to established regimes to revolutions in the formal standards, these remarkable thinkers have a lot to teach, while making the world a more beautiful place to admire. Not only by redefining the meaning of beauty but also tapping into the unexplored world of solutions to improve efficiency in communication and reaching to the depths of people's hearts.

Organized in matrilineal clans, the Wayuu children carry their mother's last name, making the Wayuu women not only the center of the family but cultural leaders as well. One of the most significant aspects of culture that the Wayuu women practice is the art of weaving Mochilas Wayuu bags. Handmade is a brand that seeks to show to the world the rich culture of the Wayuu and all the unique products their land has to offer. In a collaborative effort to provide aid to this group while placing their unique craft into de market Handmade gives back to their community.

The United States has seen a rapid development in its economy since the Second World War ended. The economic advantages of harnessing the power of fossil fuels have been a critical aspect of the country’s development towards becoming the most powerful nation on the planet. Nevertheless, this growth was not going to be constantly increasing as predicted but rather stagnated sooner than expected. Since 1970 the production of oil and gas picked, and it has been decreasing since then. That being the case, the method of hydraulic fracturing or fracking has gone trough a boom since it allows natural gas to be extracted from deep underground. There have been very optimistic predictions that say the United States will become once again the leader of the world´s energy production. Natural gas is very abundant in deeper layers of the earth and fracking let us get there. Not a Fracking Chance is a thesis project that focuses on creating awareness and presenting heavy and complex information in a much more digestible manner for the common citizen to understand.

Thank you: I want to thank my parents for their ongoing support throughout this sub-journey in my life and to everyone who somehow contributed to my growth as a professional and overall as a person as well. I also want to say thank you to my instructors for pushing me forward and encouraging me to become a way more proficient designer than I was before beginning all this.
