Meet Deanna Burmatoff! An Interview By Jennica Wlodarczyk 1. Hey there, Deanna! Why don’t you introduce yourself for the readers who may not know you? I live in a small town outside of another small town, 100 Mile House, between a fairly larger town called Williams Lake and much bigger city called Kamloops. I have two sisters and a baby brother; all are younger than me by at least 8 years. We have two dogs, a cat, a fish, two kittens, and 20-something chickens. We used to have just over 40 chickens, but half are in our freezer now. I like to read, paint, draw, listen to music, bike, hike, and hang out with my friends whenever I get the chance. 2. What is one of your biggest pet peeves? I have a lot of pet peeves, actually, so this is going to be hard… I guess a couple of my biggest pet peeves would have to be inside jokes. Or people talking about me when I’m right there, or dumb blond jokes. Dumb blond jokes because I am a blond… and I like to think I’m pretty smart :P People talking about me when I’m right there makes me feel invisible, I guess, and it’s kind of rude and annoying. Inside jokes are very exclusive, once you think about it… I mean, I love inside jokes when I am a part of them, but otherwise… it’s annoying, I’ll say that :P Haha, but

thankfully these don’t happen very look for fights. often. 5. What do you want to be when you “grow up”? When I grow up, eh? Haha. Well, when I was younger, I wanted to be a teacher. I’ve always loved working with kids, since I have three siblings who are all much younger than me, though sometimes it can get a little demanding… Now I’m interested in counseling or social work, but still like working with kids. 3. If you could be remembered for anything, what would you choose? That’s a hard question… I guess I’d like to be remembered as a friend who really cares, and who would be there to help anyone with anything. Like a sister, almost. I’d also like to be remembered as a person who fully trusted God and had a close relationship with Him, and who helped others along their spiritual journey as well.

6. What does the word “catacomb” make you think of? It makes me think of a tomb, because that’s what “catacomb” really means. But if I didn’t know what it meant… I would think it had something to do with a cat and a comb. Or a honeycomb. Funny word, “comb”… 7. Tell us something interesting about yourself. I’m not very interesting. JK. Umm. I have never used the chat slang term “LOL” and never will. “Haha”, “hahaha”, “ahahahaha”, etc. is better in my opinion, and actual laughing out loud is even better. Laughter is a joyful noise; there’s no need to disguise it.

4. Who was your favourite Canadian prime minister to learn about (if you have a favourite)? I can only think of two prime ministers straight off the bat, and those would be Sir John A. MacDonald and Wilfrid Laurier. MacDonald was the first prime minister, I believe… (I’ve forgotten already. Socials isn’t exactly my strongest 8. Would you ever dance in subject). He had…“interesting” public? Hahaha, no. No way. hair, too. Laurier was a man of compromises. Good man; didn’t 9. What’s your favourite thing

about the HCOS Weekly? I think it’s so cool that the school newspaper is run entirely by kids; students. No teachers are supervising the thing to make sure we get it done. But that doesn’t mean we’re sloppy or disorganized. Our editor is very good at keeping us on our toes and making sure we don’t forget the due dates. The newspaper gives kids a chance to do something recreational and educational without teacher supervision. It’s more fun that way, because even though it is pretty much like extra schoolwork, we choose to do this and manage to get it done on top of our regular schoolwork. 10. Thank you for agreeing to be interviewed! As a final question, what was one of the most important moments in your life, and why did it have such an effect on you? One of the most important moments in my life would probably have to be the time when I got really sick when I was a kid. I had HIB, Haemophilus Influenza B. I didn’t know it at the time, and my statistics aren’t exactly correct, but something like 1 in 10 kids who catch this sickness actually die from it… I didn’t die (obviously), and when I think about it, it makes me think that there must be some plan, some greater purpose for my life; God didn’t just leave me to die but healed me. And this wasn’t the first time He’s healed me miraculously before. It’s an amazing testimony that I keep forgetting about, and keep taking for granted. But whenever I do think about it, I get reminded that there is a God out there who loves us and cares for us, and who has a marvelous plan for each and every one of us. Ev-

black hole of loneliness. Friends, family, and even God seem to be avoiding you, and you don't know how to face your problems by yourself.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

Verse of the Week By Megan Ferguson "But the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing." –Luke 9:11 I realized that last year I started a lot of my Verse of the Week articles with phrases like, "Have you ever?" or "How many of you have ever...?" This year, I've decided that I’m going to try and introduce my topic without sounding like an infomercial. Today I want to talk about broken-heartedness. When it comes to this topic, I'm sure we've all been there, done that, and bought about a thousand T-shirts. When the time comes in your life that you just feel like curling up in a ball and sobbing (it will, for some reason or another), it can sometimes feel like you're stuck in a

I'd like to encourage you by reminding you about this fact that is made clear in the Bible: YES, God does care! You can talk to him about anything. He’s waiting to heal you, and a good first step is to talk to Him about the thorn penetrating your heart. Talking with God is just as effective (if not more effective) as talking with another physical human being. Healing can take time, and it is often a slow and painful process. Even so, anyone who submits to God and asks him for help will be healed. Our Heavenly Father is always with us, and it is his heart to see all of his children healthy in both body and soul. The next time you feel pressures starting to bubble up inside of you, remember this verse. God is your healer and your refuge, and there is no problem too big for him to fix.

Dear Confuzzled, I would say the best way to deal with such friends would be to continue being the Light of Jesus. Holding a stand against swearing will soon rub off on them, and they’ll realize that you don’t swear and feel uncomfortable around it. Holding your ground and staying strong will help a lot and you should soon see a difference in your friends’ speech! I always say that praying when around toxic behaviour helps to keep your mind
