Media Contact: Erica Jue Number: 13671994531 ericajue@juccce.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Joint US-China Cooperation on Clean Energy and China’s Ministry of Housing and UrbanRural Development Launch the JUCCCE Mayoral Training Program Rocky Anderson and Other Leading International Sustainability Experts Join Director of Columbia University’s Urban Energy Program for the First Course on Energy Smart Cities BEIJING, May 6, 2009 – Mayors and Deputy Mayors from 38 middle and large Chinese cities will convene at the National Mayoral Training Center today, to attend the inaugural Joint US-China Cooperation for Clean Energy (JUCCCE) Mayoral Training Course on energy policymaking. JUCCCE will premiere its first Energy Smart City training module, designed to educate Chinese Mayors about reducing local energy demand, “greening” up the local energy supply, and creating a green economy in their city. JUCCCE has partnered with China’s Ministry of Housing and UrbanRural Development (MOHURD) to host a series of courses on this topic over the next three years at the National Mayoral Training Center in Beijing. The Energy Smart Cities training program kicks off May 6th with a one-day module focused on energy planning, energy efficiency in buildings, and green jobs. JUCCCE will follow-up this daylong session with an expanded seven-day course, scheduled for May 18-24, 2009. International ‘best practice’ strategies successfully employed in other cities will also be discussed, with a heavy emphasis on making these ideas work in China’s unique policy, market, and regulatory environment. This JUCCCE Mayoral Training Program 2009 courses will feature: • • • • •

Qiu Baoxing, Vice Minister of MOHURD Wang Zhongping, National Mayoral Training Center Nicky Gavron, former Deputy Mayor of London and co-founder of the C40 Cities - Climate Leadership Group Dr. Rohit Aggarwala, Director of New York City's Office of Long Term Planning and Sustainability, and chief sustainability advisor to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg Rocky Anderson, former Mayor of Salt Lake City and climate change champion Xu Yake, Chief Engineer of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Village Top international energy experts from the U.S. Department of Energy, McKinsey & Company, ICF Consulting, HDR Engineering, the Alliance to Save Energy, ARUP, Covanta, Coca-Cola, and other well-known organizations.

Dr. Stephen Hammer, the Director of the Urban Energy Program at Columbia University, has been assisting JUCCCE and the Ministry with the development of the training program curriculum. “Given the rapid pace of urbanization in China, now is the time to focus on these issues. The Ministry and JUCCCE are to be applauded for their efforts to share international best practice on city-scale energy initiatives with key local decision makers from across China. I’m tremendously excited to be a part of this ground-breaking initiative,” said Dr. Stephen Hammer.
