Media Contact: Erica Jue Number: 13671994531 ericajue@juccce.com PRESS ANNOUNCEMENT: China’s Deputy Mayors Arrive for the Second JUCCCE Energy Smart Cities Course Qiu Baoxing, Vice Minister of CPC’s MOHURD and Nicky Gavron, Former Deputy Mayor of London Begin Seven-Day Course with Discussions on Urban Energy and Sustainability Planning BEIJING, May 18, 2009 – Officials from the Communist Organization Department, The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MOHURD), Chinese Science Association, and 50 Deputy Mayors, and State-Owned Enterprise executives from around China will return to the National Mayoral Training Center in Beijing today, to attend the second Joint U.S.-China Cooperation on Clean Energy (JUCCCE) Mayoral Training Course on energy policymaking. “Taking place before the UNFCC Climate Conference in Copenhagen and this summer’s visit to China by U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu, these courses will play a pivotal role in shaping future climate change discussions,” said Dr. Stephen Hammer, Director of the Urban Energy Program at Columbia University and lead architect of the JUCCCE Mayoral Training Program. “China’s cities use vast quantities of energy, and to the extent local officials can spearhead efforts to reduce these levels, there are both national and global benefits.” China’s government advocates a green economy, and to support this movement has invested 4 trillion Yuan ($585 billion) into its stimulus program, aimed at urban development projects and the overall modernization of China. As reported by HSBC, 37% (221 billion Yuan) of the stimulus program will go towards green development. Standard Chartered Bank reports that China is likely to expand its stimulus program to 5 to 6 trillion Yuan. To help Mayors accelerate the greening of China, speakers from McKinsey & Company, ARUP, ICF Consulting, The City of New York, Tsinghua University, The World Bank, HDR Consulting, Alliance to Save Energy, and more, will present a framework of solutions that will cover the following topics: land use planning, transportation, green buildings, water, waste, and green jobs. In conjunction, turnkey solutions with vendor listings and financing options will be provided to initiate the implementation and deployment of green initiatives, locally.
