HISTORY A Brief History of Think Local First In the Spring of 2007, a handful of Santa Cruz business owners came together around a common concern: the threat to local businesses posed by proliferating chain stores and easy online shopping. In an era when downtown shopping districts increasingly fall victim to homogenous chains and franchises, they collectively recognized the need to promote and strengthen our locally owned business community. Over the course of 2007, Think Local First – County of Santa Cruz formed around the shared desire to “promote and sustain economic vitality while preserving the unique character of Santa Cruz County.” If the community rallied around locally owned businesses, the thinking went, everyone would benefit: locally owned business would prosper and money would circulate throughout the community, in turn promoting more local spending and contributing to the vibrancy and health of the community. Think Local First, a largely volunteer organization, in Summer 2012 hired its first employee, Amanda Brandt, to head its marketing and membership development efforts. In the early stages of TLF, there was no guarantee that the time and efforts of a solely volunteer based organization would pay off. But the handful of people who initiated the movement didn’t have to look far for inspiration. In 2005, Kepler’s Books, the famous book emporium just 50 miles away in Menlo Park, had abruptly shut its doors, having lost too many sales to chains and on line bookstores to continue. In an unexpected outpouring of support, the community came forth with donations, a plan and a new board of directors. Within six weeks Kepler’s was open again, and today it remains a vibrant hub of Peninsula cultural life. Think Local First – County of Santa Cruz has seen a similarly successful surge in community interest. Its first public meeting, hosted by a half-dozen members, took place at Bookshop Santa Cruz in October 2007. Now the TLF Steering Committee meets bi-monthly at Caffe Pergolesi to share ideas and discuss the movement. As of this printing Think Local First, has grown to 650-plus members all of whom understand the link between a unique thriving local economy and a unique, thriving town. It’s a simple concept really: what goes around comes around. It’s about creating our community – together.

THE BIG PICTURE By Peter Beckmann, Beckmann’s Bakery and Board member Last time I went shopping for my favorite hand lotion, I had an interesting experience. First, the lotions were hard to find, and lacking a helpful store clerk, I wandered through half the store before realizing that my lotion had been replaced by lower quality but equally expensive lotions. And secondly, in order to take advantage of the advertised “special” price, I needed to join the “club” first. Although benign on the surface, this little story sheds light on some important changes we encounter in the national chain stores: • The modern chain store layout makes us to walk by all those items we did NOT plan on buying, before we get to the section with the everyday staples (bread, milk, eggs). • Chain stores are staffed to a minimum. And since employee pay is kept to a minimum, turnover is high, and knowledgeable employees are harder to find. • There is increasing pressure from national chains on their suppliers to deliver their wares at rock bottom prices. Many of these vendors, committed to paying their employees livable wages and benefits, refuse to reduce their prices, and their products eventually are replaced by lower cost, lower quality, and higher margin products. The alternative lies in the ever stronger movement towards local commerce, where shopkeepers choose their products based on their own and their customers’ preferences and not solely for profit reasons. The Think Local movement, promoted by umbrella organizations like BALLE (Business Alliance for Local Living Economies) and AMIBA (American Independent Business Alliance) currently comprises some 41,000 independent and locally owned businesses nationwide. It continues to grow thanks to discriminating personal consumption choices by all of us. By shopping “locally owned” we are creating our communities together. Please join us!

The following 10 reasons show how money spent at local businesses is reinvested in your community creating economic vitality and helping the community maintain its unique appeal. 1. Shopping local creates local jobs. Locally owned businesses in our town create local employment. Local business people and their employees in turn spend their money in the local community. 2. Out of town shops have done a good job of convincing us that local business equals expensive. If you add travel, fees to transfer items and your time, the overall cost is often much higher. 5. Shopping local retains our communities. People donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like losing shops and services in small towns but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t equate this to how they spend their money. Spending money at locally owned businesses keeps lots of fine businesses alive. 6. Shopping local retains our distinctiveness. Independent shops create distinctive shopping experiences and stock different products. Local businesses respond quickly to the needs of local customers, stocking products to meet the changing population needs. 7. Shopping local saves the environment. Local shops often stock a high percentage of locally sourced goods, which do not require long car and bus journeys, helping reduce our carbon footprint. 8. Local shops are for everyone. Most people can get to their local shops easily and this is especially important for the elderly and young generations and those without transportation. 9. Local shops value you more. Evidence from numerous surveys show people receive better customer care and service locally. These businesses survive by their reputation and repeat business, which means you get a higher standard of service. 10. Shopping local saves services.
