Welcome to the 2017 Canadian Open Judo Championships Bienvenue aux Championnats Canadiens Ouverts de Judo 2017 A huge and warm welcome to the 2017 edition of the Canadian Open Judo Championships—Canada’s prestigious annual national judo competition. The City of Calgary and Judo Canada is again honoured to be bringing you the second tournament in this exciting three-year run of the national judo competition. Judo Canada and the local organizing committee take this opportunity to offer an enthusiastic reception to everyone visiting our exciting city and to wish all competitors and spectators a successful and memorable event. Le judo est un sport passionnant apprécié par beaucoup de gens à travers le monde. Cet événement regroupe des athlètes de partout au Canada qui vont combattre pour une place sur le podium. Message from Honourable Rachel Notley Premier of Alberta On behalf of the Government of Alberta, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2017 Canadian Open Judo Championships. Every athlete competing at these championships should be proud, as they have each demonstrated a very high level of commitment and skill. To reach this top level of competition, the talented athletes you will see in action this weekend have repeatedly demonstrated that they possess extraordinary discipline for the physical, mental, and moral requirements of the demanding sport of Judo. This championship, which attracts some of the best athletes from across the country, has been instrumental in encouraging youth to get involved in the sport of Judo while promoting healthy active living. As we look forward to a remarkable display of skill and sportsmanship, we also look forward to sharing our Alberta hospitality. A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR NENSHI On behalf of the citizens of Calgary and my City Council colleagues, I am pleased to welcome you to the 2017 Canadian Open National Judo Championship. Over the coming days, athletes from across the country will compete on the national stage. With female and male participants in age groups ranging from under 16 to Veterans, I have no doubt this event will be an exciting one to watch. It takes a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication to reach this level of competition, and I commend all the athletes for their efforts. I would also like to recognize Judo Canada and Calgary͛s local Judo clubs ʹ Hiro͛s Judo Club and Ishiyama Institute of Judo Ͷ along with the volunteers, coaches and officials who have helped to make this event a success. Greetings to all the competitors, spectators and judoka 柔道家 practitioners, and allow me to welcome you all to the 2017 Open National Judo Championships in Calgary.
As a martial art and a sport, the practice of judo aims to build physical, mental and moral discipline, while training one to look for the best possible course of action. Alongside the pursuit of technical improvement and strength, practitioners are taught the exercise of courtesy and self-restraint. I feel that these are important skills that develop individuals for a better balanced self, society, country and the worldwide international community.
Courtesy is the show of mutual respect required for living in harmony with one another. In many ways, the philosophical aims of judo share parallels to my office’s objective of the pursuit of harmony and fellowship between Japan and Canada. In judo, great strength is initiated from the cooperation of muscles acting together to exert force. Likewise, as neighbours we should work together in the spirit of consideration and respect to foster international goodwill. It is fitting that we gather at the Olympic Oval, where we can be reminded of the goals of the Olympic Games to create friendship and promote good relations among different people across the world through sport. Looking ahead to the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics, I anticipate international exchange via sports to be further invigorated.
To all of the approximately 800 athletes and 200 coaches from across Canada taking part in this four-day judo event, I wish you a lively and productive championship and I encourage your continued pursuit in nurturing mind, body, spirit and sportsmanship through the practice of Judo. Message du consul général du Japon, Kunihiko Tanabe Salutations à tous les compétiteurs, spectateurs et judokas (柔道 家), et permettez-moi de tous vous accueillir aux Championnats canadiens ouverts de Judo 2017 à Calgary.
En tant qu'art martial et sport, la pratique du judo vise à développer une discipline physique, mentale et morale en s’entraînant à suivre le meilleur plan d'action possible. Parallèlement à la poursuite de l'amélioration technique et de la force, les pratiquants apprennent la courtoisie ainsi que la retenue. J’estime que ce sont des compétences importantes qui aident au développement d’individus plus équilibrés et mieux préparés pour une société, un pays et une communauté internationale mondiale.
La courtoisie est la preuve du respect mutuel requis pour vivre en harmonie les uns avec les autres. À bien des égards, les objectifs philosophiques du judo ont beaucoup de points en commun avec l'objectif de mon bureau, qui est de rechercher l'harmonie et la fraternité entre le Japon et le Canada. Au Judo, une grande puissance est produite à partir de la coopération des muscles agissant ensemble pour exercer leur force. De la même manière, en tant que voisins, nous devrions travailler ensemble dans un esprit de considération et de respect afin de favoriser la bonne volonté internationale. Il est donc approprié de se réunir à l'ovale olympique, où nous pouvons nous rappeler des objectifs des Jeux Olympiques pour tisser de nouvelles amitiés et pour promouvoir de bonnes relations entre des cultures différentes, et ce, grâce au sport. En ce qui concerne les prochains jeux olympiques de Tokyo en 2020, je prévois que les échanges internationaux seront fortifiés grâce aux sports.
À tous les quelques 800 athlètes et 200 entraîneurs de tout le Canada qui participent à cet événement de Judo de 4 jours, je vous souhaite un championnat dynamique et productif, et je vous encourage dans l’entretien continu de l'esprit, du corps, et de l'esprit sportif grâce à la pratique du judo. Dear Judo Family and Friends, On behalf of the Board of Directors of Judo Canada, we welcome all of you to the 2017 Open National Judo Championships. To the athletes, coaches and referees, we wish you all good luck and an excellent tournament. We hope each of you will compete with respect, honour and integrity, which form the philosophy and teachings of Professor Kano, the founder of judo. To those new to the National Championships, we hope that you make fond memories that will last a lifetime. For those judoka who are returning provincial and national medalists, good luck in your pursuit of excellence. For some, this is the beginning of a long journey to represent Canada at international competition and, hopefully, Olympic glory at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. To the veterans, we wish you luck as you vie for the opportunity to become National Champion and compete at the upcoming Pan American and World Veterans Championships. To all our kata competitors, we wish all of you great success. Kata has increased in popularity in Canada and throughout the world. Good luck, and we hope to see some of the teams in Italy at the World Kata Championships this fall. Finally, a special thank you to all the volunteers and local organizing committees that have been involved with our success at the national, provincial, community and city judo events and clubs. Without your help, judo could not succeed in Canada. Judo is the way to the most effective use of both physical and spiritual strength. By training you in attacks and defenses it refines your body and your soul and helps you make the spiritual essence of judo a part of your very being. All of the competitors have trained hard this year leading up to this final event in Canada. Everyone deserves to reach for their utmost best performance. If you are prepared, you will achieve it. Do your best, listen to your coach and above all, have fun. I believe everyone here has the potential to be the next national champion!
I would also like to take the time to thank and welcome all the volunteers and officials. These individuals have taken the time out of their daily lives and away from their regular jobs to help make this event a success. These people are the core to hosting an event like this. Without all of them—the referees and technical officials, organizing committee, the mat movers, medical team, security team, protocol team, and many more—this event would not happen. I absolutely appreciate the hard work and commitment that you have put into this event for the second year in a row to give the participants the best experience they could get. I hope you enjoy your stay in Calgary.

History of Judo L’Historique du Judo Judo (“Gentle Way”) was founded in 1882 in Japan by a young scholar named Jigoro Kano (1860–1938). Kano wanted to develop a system of physical education suitable for the newly emerging Japanese public educational system. He derived judo from the ancient art of jiu-jitsu. The system he developed is based on two key principles: maximum efficiency and mutual welfare. It aimed to teach how to subdue without injuring the opponent. According to Kano, “Judo is a teaching for life itself and with it we learn to overcome the pitfalls and obstacles of everyday living.” The school where he taught his first students in Tokyo, called the Kodokan, is regarded as the world centre of judo.
Le judo ("Voie de la souplesse") a été créé au Japon, en 1882, par un jeune universitaire nommé Jigoro Kano (1860-1938). Kano voulait créer un mode d’éducation physique compatible avec le nouveau système de l’éducation publique japonais. Il a ainsi créé le judo en adaptant différents styles dérivés de l’ancien art japonais qu’est le jiu-jitsu. Le système créé par Kano repose sur deux principes fondamentaux: une efficacité maximale du mouvement / énergie et un bien-être mutuel. Il enseigne à maîtriser et non à blesser l’adversaire. Kano affirmait que «le judo est, en soi, une leçon de vie qui nous montre à éviter les pièges et les obstacles de la vie quotidienne». Le Kokodan, l'école où il a enseigné à ses premiers élèves, existe toujours. Située à Tokyo, elle est considérée comme le centre mondial du judo.
Rules of Competition Règles de Compétition During a match, lasting up to four minutes, one contestant will attempt to either throw their opponent to the mat onto their back; hold down their opponent to the mat on their back; or is able to force a submission via a choke, or an armlock. If ippon (maximum score) is awarded, the scoring contestant wins instantly. There are lesser accumulative scores for various throws and hold-downs. If at the end of the allotted time the scores are tied, the contest enters a golden score period, during which the first to score wins.

Judo Referee Licenses
International Referee: This license is awarded by the International Judo Federation (IJF) and qualifies the referee to officiate at all international level competitions including the World Championships and the Olympic Games. Continental Referee: This license is also awarded by the IJF and qualifies the referee to officiate at Continental level competitions. The IJF is made up of 5 Continental Unions which are Panamerica, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania. Confederation Referee: This license is awarded by the Panamerican Judo Confederation (PJC) which is made up of all countries in North, Central, and South America as well as the Caribbean. Referees with this license are qualified to officiate at competitions in the PJC only. National A Referee: This license is awarded by Judo Canada and qualifies the referee to officiate at all national level competitions in Canada including the Canadian Championships.
