BACKGROUND

BACKGROUND HISTORY

The Museum of Neon Art(MONA) is a museum that exists to encourage learning and curiosity through preservation, collection, and interpretation of neon art. MONA is devoted to art that incorporates neon lighting. This includes the preservation of old neon signs as well as display of original fine art and kinetic art. In 1981 neon artist Lili Lakich with the help of Richard Jenkins, who restored theater marquees, founded the Museum of Neon Art. Their purpose was to provide a premanent exhibition space for artists to show and the public to see electric fine art and to preserve for future generations the artifacts of American culture that the beautifully designed commercial neon signs and marquees are. Museum of Neon Art offer Los Angeles a permanent collection of nostalgic neon signage and other forms of neon art. The museum of Neon Art is not just for show either. The Museum of Neon Art is all about education. They do not want to see this art form die out so they provide various workshops for everyday people to participate in.

The Museum on Neon Art opened its doors in downtown LA in 1981 — long before the city center was fashionable. For much of this time, the museum has moved around the area, looking for a spot large enough to show off its uniquely Southern California collection. In June 1981, MONA first opened in on Traction Ave. The space, now owned by MONA co-founder Lili Lakich, serves as her studio and workspace. The museum then relocated to Universal City Walk. In 1996, the museum moved back to downtown LA, at the corner of Olympic Blvd and Hope Street. After losing its South Park location in 2006 after the rent got too high, the institution was temporarily homeless. Developer Tom Gilmore offered the Old Bank district as a temporary home, but both the size of MONA’s collection and future development plans for the space made it clear from the beginning that the spot would not be the museum’s permanent home. Even though MONA is a museum with some of Southern California’s most iconic

pieces of neon art, it’s a museum without an actural museum. Right now, it’s all just packed away in storage. Finally in 2011, the city of Glendale gave the museum ample room as well as a permanent home across the street from the Americana at Brand. The museum closed its downtown facility, and hopefully it will reopen within a year at the new location.

THE MUSEUM IS CURRENTLY UNDER THE CONSTRUCTON AND IS ANTICIPATED TO OPEN IN 2014.
