What we’ve been up to this month Jenessa

This month’s been mad busy! I’ve just moved into a beautiful new Victorian house, which has got me lusting after 50s homewares even more than usual - oh Pyrex, be still my beating heart! Moving has been a great excuse for a good old fashioned clear out too - who knew it was possible for a girl to own so many dresses she’s never worn? Festival season has also had me gandering all over the country 2000 Trees in Cheltenham was a highlight, not to mention Beacons with Judy HQ! Phew, I need a nap...

Johanna

Even though I love crafting, when it comes to sewing I’m as hopeless as they come. However, when I found this velvet skirt in a kilo sale bin whose hemline needed a bit of TLC, I knew it was now or never. I’d taken these types of risks before and never gotten the result I wanted, but I went for it anyway. I am happy to announce that I navigated through that difficult operation with no major problems and am now a very happy owner of this beauty. So the moral of the story is - taking risks for gorgeous velvet skirts is always worth it.

Remember Those?! Jenessa take a trip down memory lane to find her favourite trend from yesteryear and explore its suprising comeback...

Of all the materials to make a comfortable and stylish shoe out of, plastic would probably not be high on anyones list. And yet, the humble jelly shoe is making a determined comeback, available in all colours of the rainbow and providing an irresistible throwback to 90s culture. As a ’93 child, I remember my first pair of Jelly shoes well. Although all my friends had the heeled kind, in the summer of ’98 my Mum finally let me wear a pink, glittery flat pair with my frilly socks, wisely deciding that heels were not for five year olds (clever lady). Paired with my Christmas cracker

New Look, £9.99

chokers, bubble backpack and spaghetti strap dress over a t shirt, I was well set for my friend Katie’s bowling and burgers birthday party at the local Megabowl and McDonalds (who remembers Mcdonalds birthday parties? Another epic throwback.) Alas, before I could get anywhere near my happy meal, my childish bubble was burst when I undid my shoes to swap them for bowling ones, promptly breaking the flimsy plastic buckle. Due to the nature of the shoe, this promptly rendered them useless. My memories are vague, but I’m told I made the sort of scene that no beanie

Primark, £6

baby free toy with my meal could sedate. So here I find myself, 16 years later, strapping myself into a heeled (finally) silver pair with some tentativeness. How long will these babies last? Will I have to repeat the trauma of my youth? I’m surprised at how comfy they are, how well they pair with jeans and skirts, and am shocked to discover that I’m mentally asking myself how many pairs would be too many to buy this summer. Oh, and with the frilly socks? Nearly two decades later, they still look ace. Some things never change.

Meet The Traders Meeting the traders has become our favourite part of the job. This time I headed to the Victoria warehouse in Manchester (very cool!) to chat with lovely people and be overwhelmed by all the vintage goodness.

Claire Slack from She Sells Heart ‘I sell handmade hair accessories made from reclaimed material with a bit of a vintage theme. I make everything myself, so as this my first fair, it seemed a little scary at first but it’s really really good! Very busy, so I’m definitely planning to do more. I’m looking forward to summer - I have bought some dresses and I’m hoping to make a bit more money today so I can go and have a bit of a shopping spree here.’ Visit She Sells Heart on Facebook

Cheryl Horsley from Arubia Vintage ‘I sell handpicked vintage treasures for women – accessories, jewellery and try to find one-off pieces. I bring my stall to Judy’s events as often as I can, but I’m opening a shop near Liverpool at the moment so I can’t do them as often as I’d like, which is a shame -they are so well established and they always offer you a great platform. And there’s always something amazing to buy for yourself as well. I’ve just bought a 70’s pastel suit with a matching belt. It’s like a top with a maxi skirt, I can’t wait to wear it!’ Visit Arubia Vintage on Facebook

Becky Cashen & Glynis Roe from Retro Bazaar ‘Our business is pure retro vintage: no copies ,everything is original. We restore vintage technology like telephones, record players, lighting and we also sell furniture. We do a lot of the furniture flees in London and some events across the country as well. We love selling with Judy’s at the festivals, they’re great. Long days but good fun! I have a chair passion so I’ve gotten garden chairs ready for the summer and Becky’s got a vintage Volksvagen so she spent her money on that - maybe you’ll see us in the fields over the next few months...’ Visit Retro Bazaar on Facebook

Zoe Rees from Bottle Green Vintage ‘I sell women’s clothing and accessories from the 1960s to the 1990s. I sell at vintage fair all around the UK and on Asos Marketplace, but I’m really looking forward to Judy’s events this summer - I did Beacons festival last year with her as well and that went really well. I’ve not been stocking up my personal collection for a little while, but there are so many stalls here today, the venue is so great so I’m sure I’ll find something!’ Visit Bottle Green Vintage on Facebook

A Big Thankyou From...

With thanks to Dusty & Dylan and Bottle Green Vintage! Here at Judy’s Digest there is nothing we love more than the British Summertime. Sure, the weather isn’t always enough to rival the Maldives, but if you ask us, you can’t get much better than a weekend in a tent with a group of friends, a few cheeky beverages and a whole lot of great music. Which is why, exhausted as we are, we had such a fab time at Beacons Festival! We sent vintage clothing, accessories and all sorts of other festi-fashion to the Skipton dales to kit you out with everything you need to make your weekend extra-retro. Pretty cool eh? Here are the five things we loved most.

1) Our Stall!

10

Well of course! After such great feedback from festivalgoers at Beacons 2013, it would have been rude to stay away. Everything from tie-dye to tassels, jumpsuits to jazzy shirts were crammed into our tent, and you guys loved it! Affordable as ever, a nice dress is way better than one too many ciders right?

2)The Music!

As serious 90s revival fans, we were down the front getting ‘fancy’ with Charli XCX, the current queen of the grunge trend. We also managed to take some sneaky breaks to catch our faves East India Youth, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart and Toy.

3) The Scenery

Something about a Yorkshire landscape gets us feeling the hometown pride, and the Skipton dales were nothing short of postcard worthy, even in a downpour.

4) The Food

Begone overpriced hot dogs and lukewarm burgers - Beacons take festival food seriously. We’re still dreaming of Reds BBQ and Mothercluckers Fried Chicken, but we also gave Street Indian Vendors Bundobust a good go perfect for veggies!

5)Making Friends with you!

We were style spotting across the weekend, and you guys didn’t let us down. Thankyou for all your support - here’s to Beacons 2015?

Cocktails at Tiffany’s What’s better than sitting in the sun with a cocktail in hand? We can’t think of anything...except for maybe giving the drink a little vintage twist. Johanna Mangel brings back cocktail hour with her old- Hollywood inspired recipes.

Judy’s Digest loves... In each issue of the Digest we pick an independent brand who are channeling the spirit of vintage to create something new. This month, Jenessa is focusing in on our sassy friends in the south...

History: Sass & Belle started in Covent Garden in Central London in the 90s. A little market stall became a shop, one shop became two shops, two became three, and then they started to sell online. ABOVE:Fox and Owl Cushions - Sass&Belle, £16.25 each Bedding - Home Bargains, £9.99 for Double Other Cushions - Handmade , Jenessa’s Own. BELOW: English Garden stacking suitcases - Sass&Belle, £19.95 for pack of three Wicker Basket - Jenessa’s own.

Available at: sassandbelle.co.uk, Urban Outfitters concessions and at their flagship stores in London’s Covent Garden, West End and in the British Museum. What To Expect: Taking inspiration from vintage flloras and faunas, Sass & Belle specialise in cute’n’quaint homewares, gifts and decorations. We’re particularly in love with their Paddy The Fox cushion (styled above), a thick orange felt face perfectly accentuated with floral ears. Too cute! We’d also recommend their pretty stacking boxes (left) which come in a variety of patterns and prints. In fact, pretty much anything from their new ‘vintage floral’s range would make a great gift, if you can bear to give them away! Fashion Fact: According to Sass & Belle store manager Anh, Paris Hilton once shopped in the store: “She bought lots of butterflies, spending more than £200!” loves it!

Make Do And Trend: Simple Summer Bunting

You Will Need: - A choice of fabric (scrap cotton will work fine, or search for ‘fat quarters’ online) - A template of your chosen shape and size (we went for mini triangles, but feel free to experiment – hearts or flowers also work well!) - A length of bias binding (length will vary depending on your chosen flag size) - Sewing machine/ needle and thread - Pins

A Retro Rose

We caught up with award winning, 16 year old style blogger Ellie Connor Phillips of Rose & Vintage to chat colour clashing, David Bowie and the horrors of wearing Crocs...

Hi Ellie! Tell us about your blog and how you started it? My blog is pretty much an online representation of me - it’s a collection of my clothes, my likes and dislikes, the places I’ve been to...pretty much everything goes on the blog! It’s very much like a diary. I started it because I had been reading blogs for ages, and loved vintage fashion, and setting up a blog seemed like the right thing to do. What were your earliest memories of vintage fashion? In all honesty I was a little scared of vintage as a child - the idea of

16

second-hand items was new to me and I was worried they would be dirty or smell. Then my cousin and cousin-in-law introduced me to Spitalfield’s Market and Brick Lane, where I bought my first vintage sweater...it was a downward spiral from there really. It got me completely hooked! What is your favourite vintage era and why? It depends on my mood. My style usually has a little bit of a 60’s/70’s twist to it, but I think that is because I love the music from that era and it’s the era my parents grew up in, so I know more about

it, it comes more naturally to me. I adore 40s and 50s shapes and styles though, and so I often end up trying to combine eras in my outfits. 50s is perfect for parties or special occasions! You’re queen of the colour clash – what advice would you give to people looking to add more colour to their wardrobe? Thank you haha! I love clashing colours and prints - I think the key is to just forget what you think goes together, and just wear whatyou want to put together... if you like that green skirt and orange coat, wear it! You’ll look

Big Picture

great, and anyone that disagrees just doesn’t understand fashion. True style has no rules! Who is your style icon? David Bowie. But then again, he is my icon for everything. I just adore his style, and how he was never afraid to just change and do something completely different. I also admire Vivienne Westwood as she never fails to wear and make the most amazing garments...and of course Iris Apfel, and all of the amazing women on Advanced Style. What has been your all time best Judy’s fair buy? That’s a hard one! I think the last one was definitely a pair of wooden frames with cute watercolour drawings inside. They look great on my wall. Where are your favourite hang out spots in London? Brick Lane is THE place for vintage, and there is always a kooky and cool market on in

18

Spitalfield’s. I also adore Covent Garden, Berwick Street and Carnaby Street, and Camden Market too! What are your plans for the summer? Work on my blog! I finally have time to put my all into it, and will hopefully be able to visit some lovely places (and some Judy’s fairs!) and take some good photographs. I also am intending to take a trip to France with the family, and am leaving all technology behind (except something that plays music) as I just really need a break! What fashion item would you never be seen dead in? Oooh. I break a lot of rules, especially those I set myself. I guess right now it would have to be a pair of Crocs. I have nothing against them - they are really comfy and great for kids but I feel the relationship must end once you hit your teens. I’m sorry Crocs.

You’ve just won Company magazines Best Teen Style Blogger award, does this feel surreal? It is! I can’t really believe people read my blog! I adore all of the other girls blogs...they are all really talented and I should not have been in the same category, let alone winning. I am sure I’m not as good as they are. Does it feel odd to think that so many people are fans of your style? It must put some pressure on you to dress quirkily all the time... It’s a bit strange, as I feel I can’t repeat outfits as much (such a guilty pleasure of mine). It’s also hard sometimes as I don’t want to drastically change but I want to let my style develop - I’m sure I’ll manage somehow!

Kate Mosh

Johanna muses over the perils of picking that festival worthy outfit... For a long time festival fashion has led a life of its own. Think crop tops, floral flowy dresses, novelty prints, all things crochet and a whole lot of hipster goodness. People seem to go cuckoo at Coachella and Glastonbury, letting loose and wearing outfits that vary from beautifully bohemian to outright ridiculous – I can’t be the only one who has been annoyed by the neon furry boots and bizarre headwear. Festivals seem to offer people some kind of a get out of jail free card. All of a sudden you are allowed to go for the boho-chic look that you were never quite sure you could pull off. It’s almost like Halloween, only instead of dressing to scare, people dwell on the nostalgic memories of a romanticized hippy movement, that they (we) all long to have been part of. I mean how cool would it have been to be taken into a trance by Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock in 1969?

20

Despite being dedicated to music, festival season has become a celebration of fashion. The 1960s were the decade in which music festivals were born: events such as Monterey Pop, Isle of White and Woodstock were very much influenced by the hippie movement. It’s no wonder the arenas were flooded with Marianne Faithfull and Joni Mitchell look-alikes. Clearly the fashion has not changed much as these style icons still provide plenty of inspiration for the festival goers. As romantic and cool as wearing maxi dresses while walking bare foot is, this might not be the best way to go when you decide to attend a three day event at a potentially very muddy field in the UK. The cute little tops paired with denim cut-offs are more suitable in the climate of Coachella. In England you might have to face all four seasons in one day and anyone who’s been to a festival knows what a

headache the minimal packing is. This brings us to the ultimate festival fashion dilemma – how to look good while being practical? Thankfully, the likes of Poppy Delevingne and Alexa Chung have taught us is that layering will save your day (and night). Having a flannel shirt in your festival kit will not only simplify your life, it will also be the safe choice if you want to go for the effortless look. Also, if you absolutely hate the idea of wellies ,at least choose chelsea boots or hardy trainers instead of sandals. Cold, wet feet are a sure way to feeling uncomfortable and miserable, plus as far as we’re concerned, Converse still look pretty awesome. So do wellies for that matter. Festivals are the highlights of the summer, so do attend as many as you can and pack wisely. And remember, as Kate Moss and Pixie Geldof have proved, there is a way to make big rubber boots work.

I found out about it through word of mouth and I think I saw it on some blogs and decided it was time to lose my kilo sale virginity. I’m really enjoying it, there’s more stuff than I was expecting. There’s so much choice! I absolutely love vintage, it’s very beautiful and unique compared to the retail stores.

Alicia Milner & Esther Pearca

This is our first time at a kilo sale. We found out about it through facebook. It’s really good, we’ve found so many things that our friend is carrying our bags for us so we can shop more. We like vintage cause it’s a bit different, we love all the patterns and of course it’s cheaper too.

22

We lurked between the tubs of vintage goodies at the Leeds Holy Trinity Church to find out what you guys were stuffing in those purple bags...

Kat Ronson

This is my second time at a Judy’s Kilo Sale. I love rummaging through all the stuff and getting some bargains. I’ve found loads of gems today. I have no idea what’s in my bag at the moment, I’ve just picked up everything and I need to rummage through it now but I got some disco wide length flares that I definitely want. I have my own vintage brand so obviously I love vintage and I come to kilo sales to pick up some stuff to customise. It’s so much cheaper and you can pick up stuff that nobody else has. Also, the quality that people used to sew to was much better than what you get in shops now.

Rita Raud

I’m visting the country and when I heard there was a kilo sale on while I’m here I got really excited. I’ve found some great summer tops here today. As I’ve studied fashion design for 3 years now I always pay attention to the quality of the clothes and vintage always beats the highstreet. And it’s cheaper! What more could you ask for?

You know you’re vintage obsessed when...

1)You can’t walk past a High Street store without shuddering or murmuring ‘The quality of stitching these days’… 2) You’re actively stealing clothes out of your Mum’s wardrobe. 3)You no longer know your dress size, but are entirely familiar with your height and waist measurements and always have a tape measure in your handbag. 4) The phrase ‘a little bit of a fix-up and it’ll be perfect’ has escaped your mouth more than twice. 5)You won’t throw anything away because you know it’ll be back in fashion soon enough.Hello hoarder.

6)You head off to a party and your mum tells you off not for leaving the house wearing a revealing outfit, but for stealing her favourite cardigan. 7)Leaving the house without seamed stockings and red lipstick? A travesty. 8)You’d rather go without food for three weeks

than miss out on the expensive Burberry tucked away at the back of your local charity shop. 9)Every single one of your favourite brands is now defunct. Sob. 10)Your friends describe your perfume as eau du attic, and none of them throw anything out without offering it to you first. 11)You’re super excited to retire so it’ll be socially acceptable to wear even more granny cardigans. 12)You’d turn down a boozy night out for an afternoon tea party any day. 13)You have your ebay sniping technique down to a fine art - never less than 15 seconds! 14)When someone asks where you got your dress so they can buy one too, you’re forced to roll your eyes and tell them that it won’t be possible. 15)Going to a festival? Forget crop tops and floral crowns, you’re all about the Studio 45 Jumpsuit, however unpractical in the portaloos.
