Hello Fashionistas! Summer has arrived! And not a moment too soon - we were getting tired of all that chilly weather. Summer means different things to different people, but for us it means enjoying busting out our more colourful wardrobes, planning festivals and spending long warm evenings in the garden with a nip of gin...or three. It’s also a time for reflection. As our quieter season, we use summer to evaluate the successes of all three events over the past few months, and plan even more exciting things for the future. As always, we love to know what our customers think, so please do get in touch with any suggestions. In fitting with our new-found summer vibes, we’ve got a corker of an issue for you. Gather some home inspiration with Emily on page 16 or spruce up your hair with The Barberellas on page 14. Looking for ways to wear this seasons 70s trend? We’ve got you covered on page 8. Or maybe you fancy a trip to a festival far away? Our writer Johanna gives her suggestions on page 10. We hope you enjoy - show us some love by dropping us an email on magazine@ judysvintagefair.co.uk! Have a wonderful summer,

Meet The Northernettes When we encounter a band who dress as well as they sing, we get pretty excited. Meet Katie, Sophie and Georgia; collectively known as The Northernettes, they are bringing retro back in a big way. Hold on to your hats...

Hey girls! We recognise you all of course from your individual auditions on BBC’s The Voice, but how did you come together as a band? Sophie - Georgia and I have been friends for over 18 months now, so when we were approached about the idea, naturally I said yes as I knew we had a good relationship and would be able to work well together. When we found out Katie was joining I looked her up on YouTube (Katie auditioned the year before) and thought to myself ‘YES!’ We all get on so well together, the three of us are a perfect match!!

disposable camera! Being in an all-girl band must be great for wardrobe sharing, but how would you say your personal fashion styles vary? Georgia - We have very different and very smiler styles at times. Myself and Sophie are opposites while Katie likes elements of both our styles. Katie and I both own vintage stores so it’s easy to source our performance outfits! Sophie - My personal style is more 70s bohemia. I like performing in things that are floaty, I think it gives the performance an ethereal and moody quality (and also because it hides my legs as I am the WORST dancer ever)!

You’re all from the north, just like team Judy! What’s your favourite thing about this part of the country? Sophie - The landscapes of the north, especially Yorkshire where I’m from. There’s some gorgeous sights to visit, particularly Gordale Scar and Janet’s Foss in particular - there’s a folk tale that believes a fairy queen inhabits the rear of the waterfall, I used to go when I was little – it was so magical! Katie - I really love the people! especially where I live- everyone is so full of character and interesting.

What the best vintage bargain you’ve ever bagged? Georgia - I found an electric blue 1950s full circle skirt in a local charity shop for £3.50 and I have worn it pretty much every chance I get - it is my favourite item I own! Katie - I went to a psychedelic festival a few years and picked up a 70s tapestry coat that fitted like a glove! and it was only a tenner! My favourite thing in the world!!

You’ve just played your first festival at Isle of Wight, how was that? Sophie - It was completely inspiring knowing that I was involved in the same festival as Fleetwood Mac - Stevie Nicks is a major influence of mine - I just adore her, so knowing I was part of something she was just made the experience even more exciting for me!

What vintage fashion trend would you never been seen dead in? Katie - I really like most vintage fashion trendsthe only thing I dont dig is real animal fur.Georgia - I would never be seen in the 1980s style. I genuinely feel like my soul would die a little if I had to wear 80s shoulder pads and lycra should only be worn in the gym!

What is your festival tipple of choice? And your three must-pack essentials? Sophie - Oh that’s a difficult one! I brought a water bottle full of vodka for the whole weekend but made the mistake of rinsing my mouth out with it after brushing my teeth thinking it was water! I’ll definitely stick to beer next time! Katie - I love a good beer like our Soph! For me it definitely has to be a groovy outfit to wear the entire time, sunglasses and an old school

When can people expect to hear music from you? Can we expect retro covers or will there be some new material? Sophie - We’re currently in the process of recording some originals, but have incorporated some covers into our set – all with a Northernette twist! To keep up with the girls latest news, check out their facebook page here

Styling The Seven Jenessa Williams Kilo Event & Brand Manager

Anybody with a keen eye for trends will tell you that the summer of 2015 belongs to one decade only: the 1970s. A little moodier than the 80s and far less prim than the 50s and 60s, we’ve gone mad for the era and it’s far-reaching styles. If you’re new to vintage or are worried about being a little too ‘fancy dress’ with your retro outfits, check out our top tips for nailing the trend -

Rich Colours

When styling this era, rich colour is your best friend. Think of the shades of autumn - bold reds, browns, khakis and oranges are all synonymous with the 70s, offset by bright blue denim. Swap your washed out numbers for a block shade, and don’t be afraid to clash colours.

Adjust your volume

Playing with shape is a great way of creating a seventies look. A-Line skirts and flared trousers all add volume to the bottom half of your body, so pair with a tighter top to avoid looking blocky. If you’re looking to balance out a busty chest, Crops or well-tailored wrap dresses will show off your

waist, while fitted band tees and halter tops are modest but still playful and carefree.

Pick your prints

Florals are a great choice for a seventies look that doesnt take itself too seriously, but it’s important to choose the right sort of print if you want to look more orla kiely, less cath kidston. Avoid pastels and opt for larger repeat designs - ditsy only works if the colours are truly popping! Paisley prints are also an essential - stock up on collared blouses and scarves.

Texture, Texture, Texture

Silk, suede, corduroy... seventies fashion is all about texture. While an all-over courdory look might be best resigned to a toddler’s wardrobe, mixing up different fabrics in the same outfit will keep things looking chic. Key combos are a denim jacket worn with a suede skirt, a corduroy pinafore over a cotton ringer tee or a floaty silk blouse with a pair of flares. Never be afraid to experiment! Tweet us your best 70s look to @thevintagekilo using the hashtag #70sstyle - we’ll share the best!

Festival Fun A good old ‘let’s get away, dance and have loads of fun festival’ Beat Herder, invited all to the Dockber Farm in Lancashire from the 17th-19th of July. With its delicious lineup it offered an excellent variety of genres from house and electronic to folk and hip hop. We had a fabulous time selling our vintage wares - check out our blog for all the behind-the-scenes shots! http://beatherder.co.uk

If you fancy your festivals with a side of art and culture, head to Portmeirion, Wales, where the family-friendly Festival N°6 takes place from 3rd to 6th of September. Boasting an impressive list of musicians (including Grace Jones, James Bay and Mark Ronson), the village transforms into a magical hub of intimate readings, exclusive film screenings with live soundtracks, art trails through the woods and installations. The fun doesn’t stop there. You can extend the summer by taking a cooling dip in the River Dwyrdd Estuary, or, hey, why not try paddle boarding? You can even find yourself in the midst of the glittery, feathery joy of the Carnival. See you there! http://www.festivalnumber6.com

Is there a better way of combinin question obviously! This year you ended up adding a few extra sug

ng business with pleasure than packing up our vintage gear and heading to a festival? Rhetorical u’ll find us at Beat Herder & Festival N°6. We’re so excited, we did a little investigation into both and ggestions across the pond as well! Taking place from the 14th to the 16th of August at a power plant close to Helsinki’s downtown, the urban music and arts fest Flow is every hipster’s dream. Through the combination of the industrial backdrop and collaboration with the University of Helsinki, it offers a strong arts program with installations and exhibitions indoors and out. The lineup will make you drool - Tyler, The Creator, Florence + The Machine, Beck, Alt-J, Róisín Murphy, Tove Lo, Flying Lotus and many more. Cool points to Flow for inviting a range of restaurants, street food stalls and bars to join in. http://www.flowfestival.com/en/

Since 2003, on the last weekend of August melomaniacs gather in the west of Paris to celebrate Rock en Seine. Naturally the lineup has the alt- and indie rock heavyweights such as The Libertines, Kasabian, The Maccabees and Wolf Alice, but you also get a psychedelic aura from Tame Impala, electric feel from The Chemical Brothers and Hot Chip and mellow vibes with Natalie Prass. Surprisingly, it’s also family friendly. With its own lineup alongside many music, food and art workshops, the Mini Rock en Seine gives kids their own event away from the rowdy crowds. Cool points for having it in a garden created by the same dude who designed the park of Versailles. http://www.rockenseine.com/en/artists/

Having only seen the rolls, which Helen tells me is the most popular style for shoppers when the team are based at Barbarellas at Judy’s, it’s great to get a look at Judy’s. I can see why too - I’m instantly in love their day-to-day base and the salon is as with this pin-up-inspired look .The style - which stylish as I’d expected. harks back to the 1940s and is most commonly associated with women based on the home front during World War Two. It’s clear that creating these iconic vintage styles is a real passion for the Barbarellas. The team have been a regular fixture at Judy’s for over a year and always look forward to it. ‘It is the best one,’ Helen says about this particular vintage fair. And who are we to disagree? Next we try out something I’ve really been looking forward to - the legendary 1960s beehive, made famous by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany’s. After lots of backcombing and hairspray, I’m amazed by the incredibly voluminous mane that Helen creates from my shoulder-length hair, proof that anyone can try this classic look. It seems that the beehive has become famed amongst the Barbarellas team for its pick-meup qualities, with Helen telling me: ‘There is no better feeling than having a beehive!’ I can testify that this is absolutely true! As well as being a bit of a tonic, the beehive is also the perfect stand-out style for a special occasion.

I feel super glam as we head outside to take pictures and it’s truly like stepping back in time when I perch on stylist Hayley’s gorgeous retro car for a few cheeky snaps. Aah, when great hair and beautiful cars combine! The Barberellas love seeing how people react to these incredible hairstyles that they’ve probably never tried before and I can understand why. The beehive gives me such a boost and I leave the salon with my head (and hair!) held high after a wonderful morning spent at the salon. I couldn’t recommend it more. If you’re frequenting Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair in Lincoln then be sure to visit the team’s stall. With vintage hair, make-up and nails available, it’s the perfect way to complete an already fun day out. Barbarella’s hair boutique is based at 104 Grange Crescent, Lincoln, LN6 8DA. As well as vintage styling, they offer a variety of services including cuts, colouring, perms and wedding hair. For more info call them on 01522 690 835, email barbarellas104@gmail.com or find them on Facebook here.

At Home With...

Emily Hughes Fair Event & Brand Manager

How would you describe your interior style? Mid-century, kitschy, curated…I live in a rented house so certain elements of the decor are beyond my control, like wall colours, carpets etc, but my tastes over the last few years have certainly changed! I used to buy pretty much anything ‘vintage’ looking but I’ve learnt that sometimes a little bit less is more. Where do you look for home inspiration? Got to love Pinterest! I also get lots of inspiration from Instagram (I’m an addict) and my friends homes. How do you find a balance between style and functionality when buying pieces for your home? I never really think about functionality! I just go for the way something looks and then make it fit into the house - I have stopped myself buying bargain mid-century furniture recently because I have no more space left!

What’s your favourite room in your house? The living room is my favourite place! The house has such lovely character details like the brick fireplace and slate/wooden floors. It only came with the sofa so it’s been lovely to put all my gorgeous furniture in the room and not have to mix it with boring existing furniture. The fire place is my favourite part of the room. I’ve tried to make it a real feature with the plant, hexagonal glass jar, teak pineapple dishes and an old letterpress tray…it all came together really well! What has been your biggest home bargain? And your most lavish indulgence? I’ve got a ridiculous flamingo tapestry in my bathroom that I bought in France for five euros (about £3.50)…it’s almost as big as me but I couldn’t resist! Luckily I have family there that could bring it back to the UK for me. I honestly don’t have anything lavishly expensive in my home either…nothing you see cost me more than £50 (including all the furniture). I’m a serial bargain hunter.

What style tips would you give to someone looking to inject a little vintage on a budget? Hit the vintage fairs, car boots, charity shops, junk shops…it takes time to build up a curated collection of vintage ‘tat’ so you’ve got to always be on the ball. Perhaps you want to add a statement feature into one of your rooms - look on Pinterest for inspiration and then plan your buys. The one thing you don’t want to do is buy any random ‘vintage’ style item or you could risk a cluttered rather than curated look! I always scrimp on things for my home so I don’t think there’s any shame in trying to save a bob or two everywhere by forward planning. Do you have any DIY hacks or tips for our readers when styling their home? I’ve recently bought some lovely little cacti for my living room and planted them in vintage coffee cups I never use. It looks ace and means your plants have a bit of character. I love having plants in my home, I just thing it really adds something to a room.

Money no object, describe your dream abode? A huge mid-century home from Palm Springs. I’d love to just get one replicated over in the UK. I could really go wild on the mid century furnishings too - I’d love to invest in some really fantastic designer buys once I get my own home. Somewhere I could curate from top to bottom would be incredible. On a slightly more realistic level I’d love to buy an old terraced house and do it up from scratch, I’ve seen a few people do it and the results are incredible. What are your top three interior no-no’s? Say no to beige!!!! Theres so many colours and beautiful wallpapers out there, it would be such a shame not to utilise that. Carpet in bathrooms…I just don’t get it. I love really beautifully tiled bathrooms, my dream home would have an incredible tiled bathroom and roll top bath - a girl can dream! My last thing is white leather sofas - I just don’t understand it… sorry if any of you have one!

KILO BLOGGERS

The bloggersphere has been going kilo crazy in the past few months! Nearly every one of our events since January has seen a lovely writer wax lyrical about our fab stock, picking up some amazing bargains on the way. Here are some of our faves...

Frankly Ms Shankly

Sankles

The Little Things

“I really could have spent all day going through the rails and tubs of clothing. Next time I will need to save up some cash - I could have easily went a little crazy, especially on all the faux fur coats!”

“I’m normally a terrible vintage shopper - I have no patience for rummaging and feel intimidated by the confidence of other strong independent female vintagers. But I didn’t have to look very hard to find some great 70s dresses.”

“I really enjoyed battling my way through the rails looking for my goodies! In the end I opted for two dresses and an oversized denim jacket, which I’m going to take my scissors and sewing machine to - customising is all part of the fun.”

Ellie’s Favourite Things

Laura Ann XO

In My Sunday Best

“Judy’s have had my heart since I was at University up in Lincoln, and their kilo sales don’t dissapoint either! My goal is to own a coat in every colour of the rainbow, so I snapped up this Jaeger Princess coat.”

“Go in determined and have a proper rummage and you can come out with loads! I left with a pretty pussy bow blouse, super oversized shirt and a good old Levi’s jacket”

“I went picked up lots of items which were slightly more colourful than my normal wardrobe! I think there was a lot of things I could have picked up but I’m so excited to wear it all!”

Samio

Of course, as all the garments are vintage, it means that each piece is one off, so once it’s gone, it’s gone. So when you see a gem, there’s no hesitation, you’ve got to grab it! I picked up a great midi dress, polka dot skirt and some monochrome cullottes. (pictured with Kilo manager Jenessa)
