0. PROLOGUE

The first time I entered The Space I was 8 years old. Although it resembles the 1st World, The Space had different physics. As The Space feels too complicated and infinite, I needed the help of a Guide. With the help I surfed freely from Islands to Island, Spot to Spot and Key to Key to fill my ceaseless thirst. I could control my surfing direction with my finger, like the helm of a boat. To access The Space, I needed several buttons on a complicated looking Box. I could travel far beyond my 1st location in the blink of an eye. I could surf around everywhere in The Space, but only at my desk in the 1st World. In 2007, a smaller Box came out. I could enter The Space even while walking in the street, or when I was stuck in the middle of a crowded subway. This is my 16th year that I’ve been surfing in The Space. The following notes are what I experienced and observed so far.

Surfers enter The Space, to make their own Spots, or to explore the Spots of others. Here, Surfers carve a record of their thoughts and experiences.

00. A Guide is needed.

The Space is too complicated and vast to travel by one-selves, therefore help from a Guide is required. There are several ways to find a Canal to the Spot that a Surfer wants. Some Canals are built by other Surfers who made a door that is directly linked to an Spot while some Canals are built by Guides. A Surfer looking for a certain Spot can ask the Guide, questions such as “travel, bird, Papua new guinea’” or “compare, Coco Pops, Fruit Loops’“. Immediately the Guide will show Islands and Keys that could lead to possible Spots that a Surfer might like.

00. Surfing between the Key and Keys to the other Islands.

32

When Surfers do not know the exact Spot, then Surfers need to find proper Keys and an Island to find the right Spot. When a Surfer asks a question to a Guide, the Guide translates a question into a Key. Each Spot contains Keys, and some Spots have same Keys with other Spots.

KEY SPOT

34

When Spots have the same Keys, an Island is formed. Guides are the only ones who know the Canal, between questions, Keys, Islands and Spots. Therefore according to a question, a Guide will take a Surfer to different Islands. When a Surfer arrives on the Island, a Surfer can choose his favourite Spot within the Island. If a Surfer cannot find the right Spot, he can go through the process of asking a new question. Otherwise, a Surfer can jump to other Island by selecting other Keys that are laying next to the Key that a Surfer has. These Keys are related to each other, which are chosen by a Guide, according to other Surfers’ trails.

00. Surfers with no face

The Space is based on text, covering Islands, Spots, Keys, and Canals. The appearance of Surfers is also text. This means Surfers in The Space can have a different look, unrelated to their physical appearance in the 1st World. Since a Surfer’s identity can be separated from their identity in the 1st World, it is easier to hide themselves.

Somebody’s Spot

42

00. Eternal life

The space is detached from the life cycle of the 1st World. Once Canals, Surfers, Keys, and Spots are created, they will remain for eternity.

44

00. 1st World Projection

Surfers in The Space are still grounded in the 1st World. The elements of The Space, such as Keys, Islands, and Guides project the 1st World.

46

[SURFE [THE SPACE = S] [S’]

U’s thought = S+W S = (u’thought)*number of U + W’ W= (u’thought)*number of U + S’

ER = U] [THE 1ST WORLD = W] [W’]

However the projection also reflects the process of how Guides build Canal, and classify Islands and Keys. Guides are also influenced by where they are grounded in the 1st World. These experiences are projected back to The Space through the Guides and Surfers.

Canals are built by somebodies, who have certain background

00. Anytime, wherever

From 2007, Surfers could enter The Space anytime anywhere with a portable Box. An accumulation of use has helped to answer the instant questions in Surfers’ heads, for instance, when Surfers cannot remember a certain memory, when they heard something that is unfamiliar, when they want updated news, or when they want to share an image with others.

000. Epilogue

I still enjoy surfing everyday, every moment. Being lost and encountering unexpected surprises in The Space are the reasons for nonstop surfing. I will keep exploring the cloud of thoughts that are created by other Surfers to fill up my endless thirst for new knowledge, to seek strange perspectives and to extend it’s realm. I hope you will not get swept away by the speed, or drown in the infinity of The Space. However, it should be fine, you will also get used to it.
