INTRODUCTION After I moved in to Netherland, I start to facinated by bike so much. Bike is a such a simple machine. Chain, pedal, and connected two wheels. You do not need to have a lisence. All age are allowed to ride, from kids to eldery people. It does not need any special extra power, it moves with human engine. Also with this easy, simple machine, it helps you to be so efficient. You cna carry more, and you can go faster compare to walking. More than any features, the most beautiful part for me is, it moves with my energy and I can feel entire air and atmosphere with all my senses. I can feel the wind, I can smell, I can feel the sun with my whole body. This makes me crazy. Everyday, My affection toward bike One day, I heard about ‘scraper bike’ from Filp. He showed me the website of American Photographer, Matthe Wreamer. He explored this scraper bike people with his own eyes. I started to search about the story behind them. Because I started to wonder what is so special about them? Since I thought its just a kids with bikes which are decoreated with tape. There story behind was amazing and beautiful.

INTRODUCTION
Can creativity save the world? After I came to Netherlands, I am fascinated by bikes so much. Since the most popular transportation in Netherlands is bikes, I could see bikes more than cars on the road. I also started to use it as a major transportation. More I ride, more I get fascinated in. I love how simple they are. All you need is your own legs. Also there mechanism is surprisingly simple, so that it can be easily fixed compare to any other transportations. For me, cycling is efficient way of walking. Biking is like walking. Both of them make me feel the road by using all the senses. I can feel how the season is changing. When spring comes, I can smell flowers or grass. And also I can feel the wind with my whole body. Walking or peddling one by one by using my own energy make me feels like I am
the one who is building the road. I can feel the every step of the road. This is hard to happen when I drive a car or take a train, a bus, a ship or a flight. Those transportations do not require to feel the road one by one. They could bring me from here to there while I are sleeping. But biking or walking is different from them. Between walking and cycling, since cycling is faster and helps me to carry more stuffs with me, cycling is way more efficient. Walking can be too slow in daily city life, which means it can be not practical enough. These are why I get fascinated by bikes more and more. So I wanted to know more about bikes. While I was searching for bicycle culture, my friend told me about ‘scraper bike movement’ which is happening in Oakland, United States. Their story behind was amazing. The kids who are living in those area is easily fall

into the drug selling society or spending their whole days on television or computer games. However after they experience the world of scraper bike, there life become totally different. There desire of sense of belonging turn into mechanic class. They gather in one kid’s garage and teach each other how to make there own scraper bike. In the garage, they listen to hip-hop music together, and they ride a bike at the street together. They starts to find the way to express themselves. The power of expressing creativity is way much greater than I thought. Lots of kids start to dream about positive future. They said they want study more about mechanics. Or they want to be a hip-hop artist. This whole story amazed me a lot. Also surprised about the fact that this is happened by one boy. This one boy is literally changing and saving the society.

Bikes that are nicely spray painted, and feature aluminum foil wrapped around sets of spokes, which result in the bikes appearing to have rims like a box chevy in the hood. Some people spray paint the aluminum foil to match the bikes color, or the exact opposite. Most jackasses that participate in this are only involved out of pure boredom, and are entertained with it for days to come. (look up “scraper bike” on youtube) scraper bike -URBAN DICTIONARY
A scraper bike is an ordinary bicycle that has been modified by its owner, typically with decorated spokes with candy-colored pinwheels and matching body and wheel colors, using tinfoil, re-used cardboard, candy wrappers and paint. Scraper bikes are credited for being popularized by Tyrone Stevenson in 2007 in Oakland, California, and are an offshoot of the scraper culture of car modification. The scraper bike gained notoriety in 2007 with the YouTube music video “Scraper Bikes” by Trunk Boiz -WIKIPEDIA

Tyrone Stevenson Jr “Actually, scraper bikes saved my life. Because I was at a young age, getting into a lot of serious trouble, selling drugs and on the verge of going to jail. So my mom told me this is a way to channel anger and frustration, just focusing on something that’s creative, something that’s me,and the bikes is me.”

“The bigger, the better; the brighter, the louder,” says Tyrone Stevenson Jr., 25, better known as Da Scraper Bike King. Stevenson, a community activist and aspiring hip-hop artist, founded the Original Scraper Bike Team in East Oakland five years ago. The name is a spin on scraper cars—so called for their oversize rims, which scrape the inside of the frame. The team’s 30 members, aged 7 to 28, “scraperize” their bikes with duct tape, aluminum foil, cardboard, and spray paint. Then they ride single file through the city during group outings and neighborhood events. (The OSBT were among the first to pedal across the new span of the Bay Bridge last fall.) “It’s something they’re proud to be a part of.” His own tricked-out trike tugs six speakers powered by a 12-volt car battery. He blasts his own songs, written under the stage name Baybe Champ—one is featured in a viral YouTube video called “Scrapertown.” “We’re, like, world-renowned now,” says Stevenson. “Look it up.” originalscraperbikes.blogspot.com -SANFRANCISCO MAGAZINE

SCRAPERS . n
A scraper is an informal term to describe a modified American-made luxury/family car, usually a General Motors model from the 1980s to current vehicles, typically enhanced with after-market rims. Scrapers are popular in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California, usually associated with the hyphy music and lifestyle movement. An example of hyphy is shown in the E-40 lyrics “sittin’ in my scraper watching Oakland gone wild”. A scraper is a general description and can refer to a number of different models cars. Popular models include the Buick Regal and LeSabre, Pontiac Bonneville, Buick Century, Oldsmobile Delta 88, Buick Riviera, Buick Reatta, Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Pontiac Grand Prix, Lexus SC, full size conversion vans, Caprice classics, and Chevrolet Impalas. Supercharged automobiles are particularly sought after due to their high performance.
Similar to donks from the south, the cars are highly customized, with large custom rims, custom paint (two-tone is popular as of 2008) and custom interior to match the paint, loud audio (called slaps) and televisions. Originally made popular by African American youth, the popularity has spread and scrapers are being driven and customized by all groups and ethnicities. Scraper cars have also inspired the scraper bike movement. -WIKIPEDIA

“A viable alternative to a dream car is these dream vehicles, the scraper bikes. They are as personalized and attention-getting as ‘scraper’ cars, but easier to afford, better for the environment, a healthy way to exercise and an outlet for creativity and mechanical skills. Those scraper bikes are the stuff of the candy-coated dreams of youth: of speed, of empowerment, of being noticed in the crowd.”

SCRAPER BIKES STARTED FROM OAKLAND, UNITED STATES
OAKLAND, USA
On a recent afternoon, the skateboard park was the most populated section of gritty DeFremery Park in West Oakland. In this working class area, with unemployment, crime, violence and gentrification, just under the giant shipping cranes from the nearby Port of Oakland, a dozen skateboard enthusiasts, boys and young men, glided up and down the complicated series of ramps and jumps over and over, without saying a word. The calm was was suddenly interrupted by the arrival of The Original Scraper Bike crew. This is a neighborhood where, much like boys everywhere, youth spend their summer days gazing at the passing traffic, fantasizing about the car of their future, the car of their dreams. The principles of the scraper bike movement have spread nationally and
internationally, but here in this low-income, portside Oakland neighborhood, scraper bikes are a sign of the times and the harbinger of the increased popularity of biking within the black community. Concerns over obesity and a lack of environmental awareness in the African American community have spawned several grassroots “urban bicycle groups in the Bay Area and the movement is spreading nationwide. The focus is not just on children, but adults as well. One such organization, Red, Bike and Green, was

founded in Oakland in 2007. Five years later, it has grown to include chapters in Atlanta and Chicago, with Brooklyn and New Orleans chapters in development. According to one of the core organizers, Jewels Smith, with the group’s “3-Point Plan” the goal of RBG is to improve the health, economic vitality and environment of African Americans, by “trying to build a sustainable bike culture within the black community.”

Each year, a big chunk of our federal education budget is earmarked to figure out this very question. Non-profits like Harlem Children’s Zone and Green Dot Public Schools have both built brilliant models and boast impressive statistics on retention and closing the achievement gap. But there may be one element as important in reaching that coveted (and notoriously difficult to retain) demographic: the cool factor. “Kids work on scraper bikes because it’s something they want to do and they think it’s cool.”
says Tyrone Stevenson, founder of the budding nonprofit Scraper Bikes. Scraper bikes are equal parts art project and pragmatic transportation. Far less than the cost of a scraper car—the lowriders from which the bikes borrowed their name—scraper bikes are tricked out using foil from candy wrappers and soda cans, their frames painted with spray cans from the .99 cent store. “The frames are donated or found around the neighborhood,” says Stevenson. The oversized wheels may

be the most expensive component, but all told, a scraper bike can be built with a few dollars and some sweat equity. “Kids show up at my house every day of the week to work on their bikes,” says Stevenson. Stevenson’s car-free movement has moved beyond East Oakland thanks in large part to the group’s YouTube video which has received over three million views. Stevenson plans to leverage the attention the group has received to build an advisory board and raise funds for a community center and bike shop that could
serve more neighborhood kids. “Each Saturday, the group grows,” he says. “I’m running out of space in my backyard.” -MAGAZINE

Amber Shorter, a 25-year-old former track runner, is the only young woman in the group. Her rig is what she calls a “girly” bike with lavender wheel rims and handlebars, a metallic gold spray-painted frame, and spokes decorated with foil tape, spray painted hot pink and lavender, bordered by a design crafted from strips of foil tape emblazoned with red-lip “kisses.” When asked why she rides with the Scraper Bike crew, she replied,
“Well, I started it to ride with my boyfriend R. B., but then I got hooked. Riding out here makes me feel good. It eases my mind. I like getting the attention. From me being the only girl, I’m the only one out (of) the pack that everybody likes the most, because of my bike. Since it’s mine, it’s all girly and nice. So if they see my bike, it might give the little girls an idea to join and then probably find a theme for their bike, to come ride and be on my team.”

For when Wiggins starts to work on a scraper bike or cruises down the street on one of his creations, he, too, is transformed.
Wiggins, as if emerging from a chrysalis, sloughs off the burdens and memories of the past while working on scraper bikes. He’s not just another at-risk 15-yea-old who endured a childhood bouncing around the foster care system; whose problems in school led him to Gerber Senior High, a continuation school in Elk Grove; whose life has often lacked structure and focus. He becomes Ray Mac, the scraper bike artisan of Elk Grove and south Sacramento and budding rap recording artist, a disciple of Tyrone “Baybe Champ” Stevenson Jr., the undisputed king of scraper bikes in Oakland, birthplace of the movement. He becomes enthused and infused with plans for the future, both realistic and boldly aspirational. He becomes the fine young man his grandmother, Sharon Brandon, with whom Wiggins now lives, always knew he was. “Raymond’s not your traditional 15-year-old,” Brandon said. “(Childhood) affected him a lot, being taken from his mom at age 6. That was an adjustment. It’s still hard for him. But he’s hanging in there. Like I told him, he’s created for greatness.”
“I just do this all for fun. Hopefully, it goes somewhere. I would like a recording contract or something. But really I just want to do something positive. I want to be doing positive things instead of getting in trouble and going to jail.” “(Ray) was raised around the music business, and I remember him coming with me to the studio,” Anthony Wiggins (father of Raymond) said. “As he’s getting older, he’s starting to pay attention about what’s going on. I think he’s got some talent.” Brandon, his grandmother, with whom Wiggins now lives, at first taken aback by her grandson’s interest in scraper bikes, has seen how it’s positively affected his life. While she wants him to excel at school, she is encouraging his nascent creativity. “This is it for him,” she said. “This has boosted his confidence. He wants to entertain. He’s a whole different Raymond.” -THE SACRAMENTO BEE
People
“It feels good, real good,” he said. “It’s like ain’t nobody going to stop you. You cruise down the street in the bike lane, turn the music up, look around. You got little kids saying ‘Hi.’ They see the bike and like the way it looks. It just makes you feel like a star. They’ll yell ‘Scraper bike!’ ”
What interests Wiggins more now is putting the scraper-bike aesthetic to music. The Bay Area rap group Trunk Boiz got there first, of course, but Wiggins is working on a CD entirely of scraper bike songs. Last summer, he recorded the first song “Ride Wit Me” and went to Oakland to shoot a video for it. He ended up getting Baybe Champ to star in the video.

Give Raymond Wiggins a bicycle – any bike will do: cruiser, mountain bike, BMX, even a 10-speed – and watch him transform it to something extraordinary, something more valuable than merely a mode of transportation.

1895!
Scraper bike crews think it can be said of all great ideas that every new generation re-invents them for their own. The year is 1895 and bicycles are enjoying the brief 20 year explosion of popularity before being thrown under the (belching Diesel powered) bus. All but lost to the sands of time, Henry V Swan of New York is looking for a way to stand out in the crowd and invents a decorative wheel attachment, his design calls for colorful cloth which unfolds like an oriental fan to fill the disc of the wheel. Just 2 years later the patriotic JP Peters of Philadelphia has another method. 1950 was the age of entering Plastics and Leslie Mann of Detroit suggested its use. By the 1970’s another new generation had found their rides - and how to pimp them.

METHODS Nowadays, available methods and materials are the key to a good scraper bike, as is a good sense of color and a practiced spray-can-finger. A complete scraper bike typically has a color theme including both frame and wheels. You can find articles online about painting your frame, this article only covers wheel construction. There are several ways to do wheels, and the methods are evolving. Now lets build some rockin’ wheels!!
63
2009
In 2008 the prevalent method was to wrap aluminum foil around their spokes and spray paint it. This looks great but it gets trashed pretty fast.
By 2009 the most common style uses colored tape wrapped around the spokes. This method is clean, durable and easy. After several experiments, other mothods were not better than the widely used colored tape method.
