TINY HOME 01

The objective of this project is to design a piece of millwork that is functional, yet aesthetically pleasing based on the style and needs of the client. The creation of the floor plan was a collaborative process, given the dimensions and frame of the tiny home. I am especially proud of my contribution of the window seat millwork labled M2 on the plan.

The client is an independent fashion designer, who values ethically sourced materials, and designs, which bring people back to nature. She requested a studio space which provides storage, table space, and comfort. Plenty of storage space, and a place to store her large collection of books, as well as areas for different projects, were required to multi-task and prevent clutter.

millwork design

Cottagecore is an aesthetic that celebrates simple living, particularly in the countryside. It uses natural and ethically sourced materials, and encourages a lifestyle rooted in traditional skills. It takes a modern approach through the use of modern forms and hardware, as well as incorporating technology into the space.

COTTAGE 02

The site is located on a waterfront property in Geogian Bay, Ontario, submerged in nature, and shrouded by trees. The building is within reach of a small sandy beach, and has access to views of beautiful sunsets in the west. The building envelope is designed to blend into the natural landscape. The enviornment and sustainable living is important for the clients so it is necessary to design consciously.

The cottage is open concept: connecting the living room, kitchen, and dining room for socializing and entertaining guests, with a split level for the pottery studio and bedroom. The orientation of the cottage provides it with access to lots of beautiful views from the windows and decks, while maintaining a good level of privacy. The roofs will be constructed of metal shething for durablity. The stone for the exterior will be locally souced, and wood will be supplied from sustainably managed forests.

FLOOR PLAN

The clients are a potter, and her partner, who is a writer, in their early forties who want a contemporary retreat to get away from their busy city lifes.

They enjoy entertaining company, and have frequent second couple visitors who will stay in the guest house; which is located in a separate structure adjacent to the main house. While at the cottage, they want to take advantage of the outdoors as much as possible, by having access to lots of sunlight, and views.

The clients have a pottery studio in the loft of the main house to work in while they are visiting, that is quiet and inspires creativity.

cottage ideation

Contemporary building surrounded by lush greenery and beautiful landscape. Located in a secluded area amongst the trees that provide privacy. Natural and unfinished building materials blend harmonize with environment. The skillion roof does not hold as much snow and creates a high ceilng for a loft. Windows and skylight provide natural light, and the deck allows for serene views of the shore.

POP UP 03

The pop-up restaurant project challenged us to use two 20’ x 8’ shipping containers to design an accessible and inclusive temporary restaurant in Melbourne, Australia.

NAVI is a contemporary restaurant that aims to serve a balanced tasting menu using local ingredients found through aboriginal foraging practices. The concept for the restaurant design is “Life is written into the land itself,” derived from the Australian aboriginal ideology of Dreamtime. This design intends to hone in on the connection between life and land, by exploring form & materiality morphing into the landscape of Melbourne. NAVI’s restaurant story is heavily rooted in embracing the land, and providing an intimate experience in which visitors have the unique opportunity to connect with culture through food and atmosphere.

The goal of this project is to develop a full-scale hospitality space using the restaurant NAVI in Melbourn, Australia, that creates an innovative spatial experience, and meets all the functional requirements, and addresses the unique needs of the country and people where the restaurant would be established.

A Cherokee term meaning ‘local’, Navi is dedicated to sustainable and ethical farming, sourcing native seasonal ingredients from the land to flavour its robust Australian menu, while also creating an environment that is inclusive and accessible. Drawing inspiration from the land, the idea for the restaurant’s design is derived from exploring beneath the surface of Australia’s topography, by slicing through the rock to reveal the earthy tones, and orange layers, where the mineral has begun to rust and break away leaving behind porous texture, and hallowed cores within the rock. Using the asymmetry of the stone structure to carve out the interior into a series of separated private, and public spaces, dedicated by hierarchal needs, connected by channels, and enveloped by the strong building structure.
