Scribbler Objective: The goal for this project is to illustrate an emotion using the online Scribbler program. I chose the emotion “peaceful.
peace ¡ ful [pees - fuh l] peaceable; not argumentative, quarrelsome, or hostile: a peaceful disposition. Peaceful, placid, serene, and tranquil refer to what is characterized by lack of strife or agitation.
Narrative I brainstormed emotion ideas, including tranquil, content, serene, grateful, proud, calm, and peaceful. I drew a serene tree and pond, a tranquil sun, a proud person standing on top of the earth, and grateful hands holding the earth. I have not had formal art training since elementary school, so it was difficult for me to confidently sketch out my ideas. However, sketching immensely helped with my creativity and brainstorming. I decided on a peaceful sun to represent my mood and my first impression of Santa Barbara: sunny and relaxing. I had the desire to draw a face to illustrate the emotion, because I am so inexperienced with drawing. I enjoyed using Scribbler. It was a great tool to use to teach myself to draw while using limited resources. I loved the way the program drew with connections. It made any stroke look artsy and more interesting. My final piece is a representation of a sun with a peaceful expression on its face. I kept it extremely simple and mostly black and white. I matched the green eyes with the scriptlike word “peaceful written above the sun. I experimented with adding a background and adding color, but decided to keep it as monochromatic as possible. I wanted the viewer to focus mainly on the peaceful facial expression and not be distracted by a busy background. The green color seemed soothing to me, and created my final page layout with shades of green as well. Overall, I had a fantastic time with this project and I am excited to further explore Scribbler in the future.

Letterform
Objective: The goal of this project is to develop letterforms using our own initials, effectively utilizing various color schemes, negative space, figure and ground.
Letterform Narrative I had a wonderful time with this project. I was intrigued by the idea of creating something unique and interesting while only using two letterforms. While some of my brainstorming was based on fonts I liked, I also drew some ideas not knowing which fonts to use at the time. I wanted to experiment with both clean and bold sans-serif and playful script typefaces. Those are my two favorite styles, and because I may end up using a design from this project as a personal logo, I thought I should focus on those. I experimented with fifteen different color themes from Kuler. I tend to lean toward cool blues and greens and warm magentas and pinks. I used a wide variety of themes to see how the colors interacted with one another. Balancing figure and ground was a fun challenge for me. In some of my designs, I was able to fill the counters of the letter B with colors, so the eye would have to look at the white space to see the actual shape of the B. I think this is most evident in my first two ideas, which use the Coolvetica font. This project really opened my eyes to positive and negative space. I now look twice to see how art can be interpreted in two ways by using both the background and foreground. Overall, I am very satisfied with this project and learned a lot about color themes, letterforms and positive and negative space.
Poster Objective: The goal is to create a compelling poster for a social cause, with a clear call to action. I chose the issue of mental health awareness.

Narrative My design aims to bring awareness about mental health. In today’s society, mental heath issues are often disregarded and misunderstood. People are labeled with insults such as “lunatic” and “crazy,” when in reality there is an underlying chemical imbalance. In my poster, a girl is sitting slumped over with her arm covering her eyes, and appears to be crying. Surrounding her are insults about her mental health. Beneath her is the statement #StopTheStigma. My design attempts to open people’s eyes to the disastrous effect hurtful words have on a person. If the general population becomes educated, the stigma will be greatly reduced. The instant focal point is the crying girl. She is the main imagery used in my design and is placed on top of the crumpled paper graphic. The size and location grab attention; she is almost in the middle of the page and her size takes up a large portion of the poster. I am not very experienced in Photoshop, so this was great practice for me. I have never used to Mask Tool before, and it was definitely a challenge. The first photo I used was too difficult to make it look of professional quality, so I chose another. I think it turned out decently but I’m sure with time I will become more polished. I had a wonderful time with this project and look forward to learning more in Photoshop.

Two Page Spread
Objective: The goal is to create a 2-page layout for a 500-word short story, with imagery.
Two Page Spread Narrative I thoroughly enjoyed this project. My favorite book as a child was “The Rainbow Fish,” and it was so fun to revisit the story and find imagery that was nostalgic of my past. This was my first time using a grid layout, and it was the most helpful tool I’ve ever used to keep text and images aligned and organized. I also have not used a baseline grid before. It makes such a tremendous difference when creating and designing publications with a large amount of body copy. Learning to effectively use text wrap and column widths was invaluable. The PPI calculator was also an excellent tool to determine what resolution was needed for the images I chose. I enjoyed designing with a two-page layout and would be interested in creating magazine spreads in the future. I also was able to use the lasso tool and eraser tool in Photoshop to cut out my imagery and then refine the edges. I am not very experienced in Photoshop so this was a great skill to learn. I then used the Window - Effects - Multiply function in InDesign to blend the white image background with the document background. This was magic! Each project I’ve completed has strengthened my design skills, challenged me and taught me new tips, tricks and functions.

Hello! My name is Julia Black and I am from Sacramento, CA. I graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 2012 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. I moved to Santa Barbara in August 2016. I think Santa Barbara is the most beautiful place ever and I am so happy with my decision to move here. Currently, I am a student at Santa Barbara City College, and will soon have my Certificate in Graphic Design. Because I am going back to school, I wanted it to be for something I am very interested in and could use in my career as well. Everything I’ve learned about graphic design has been self-taught (learning by doing and making mistakes), so it has been great to receive guided instruction and engage in peer learning. Graphic design allows me to be creative and I think it is very therapeutic. I’ve worked at nonprofit organizations for the past five years, and am extremely passionate about the sector. My experience includes graphic design, marketing, event coordination, volunteer coordination, and more. I would love to be a Creative Director one day. It would also be my dream to help a new nonprofit develop their logo, branding and website from scratch. Thank you so much for your time!
