YOUR “Y” – YOUR CHOICE Danielle Brinkman, Board Chair, talks all about the “Y” On almost a daily basis I see the surprise experienced by our newer members as they discover the true breadth of the programs, classes and equipment offered here at the Y. We all know that our Y boasts a worldclass pool and myriad exercise and workout equipment. But many of us are not aware of the true range of program choices offered here at the Y. Our diversity of offerings is one of the elements of our community that is unmatched by any other facility in the Ventura area. My Y involves lifting weights in the gym, using the rowing machines, strengthening and lengthening my muscles on the Cybex equipment and sitting in the hot tub for a relaxing dip before work. My kids enjoy the swimming programs and my husband takes part in the yoga and other stretching classes. But “My Y” is always evolving. As I grow and change, the Y is right there. All of the equipment, programs and guidance that I need to fully meet my health goals. And the friendships that I formed here are some of the best in my life. I can truly say that the Y has been one of the most influential organizations in my life. So what does your “Your Y” look like? Is it the programs or classes that draw you in? Is it the diversity of our equipment? Is it the worldclass pool, or the spa, sauna or steam room? Is it the people and friends that you have made? The point is that here at the Ventura
Family YMCA you have the power to make your experience in to Your Y, Your Choice. Our YMCA facility is one of the only facilities in Ventura where you can tailor your own experience with a single set price. For this reason our membership benefits are truly unmatched. So take a few minutes to learn more about our amazing programs and offerings here at the Y. You might just find that special class or program that can change your life. And as you grow and evolve, so too can your Y experience. Good luck, and I look forward to seeing you here in our amazing facility. There are so many reasons why people come to the YMCA. Responses varied from “because the Y has a great pool” to “the Y changed my life… Literally!” The YMCA has made a promise to strengthen the community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Because of this promise, Y staff and members are encouraged every day to remember and celebrate why they are a part of the YMCA. Whether you are playing basketball or working out, make this your Y! When you are a member of the Y, you are the Y.
“The YMCA is a place to exercise, a place to relax and a safe haven for kids.”

Want better odds? Change the odds for someone in our community Financial Assistance is available for kids and families who need us most. We count on the generosity of our friends, members and community to help people of all ages and from all walks of life be more healthy, confident, connected and secure. When you give to the Y, your gift will have a meaningful, enduring impact right in your own neighborhood. The Y is the unparalleled cause for strengthening community because we are the community. We are a powerful association of men, women and children joined together by a shared commitment to nurture the potential of kids, promote healthy living and foster a sense of social responsibility. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. That’s why, at the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Every day, we work side by side with our neighbors in our community to make sure that everyone, regardless

MILT HESS
E
xactly one month before his 76th birthday, Milt Hess reached his goal of bench-pressing double donuts (also known as an impressive 225 lbs)...
“I’m working toward a personal goal... bench-pressing double donuts. I’ve seen guys do it at the Y, but... they’re not 75 years old. Back when I was 49 I knew I’d be bummed out turning 50, so I set the goal of benching 225 pounds. I worked and worked, and on my birthday I did it. The adrenaline wore off quickly, though, and after a few weeks I couldn’t do it anymore. But as my next birthday approached I got motivated again, and I repeated on the day. This went on for years; it became part of my birthday ritual... bench-press 225 in the gym, then go to Outback for a steak dinner. Last year, when I turned 75, I was getting ready for surgery and got a bit out of shape. But I’m having good workouts and earlier this week put up 215 for two reps. I’m optimistic that I’ll continue getting stronger and will be

hehala has been with the Y for a little less than a year and has already made quite an impact. Working at the Welcome Center, you need to be ready for anything at any moment. She effortlessly bonds with everyone that walks through the door, always looks for ways to improve herself and her department and has the patience of an amazing saint. Please congratulate her the next time you see her for earning Staff of the Month for January! She deserves a million thanks.
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT at 225 by my birthday in April. It’s not like I was a jock or something. I was a skinny, unathletic kid who couldn’t do even a single pullup or a pushup until I was in high school. I was a recreational runner since my teens, but I didn’t start working out with weights until I was 36. I’m kinda proud of what I’m able to do at my age. Just sharing this goal with you will help keep me motivated to achieve it. I’ll keep you posted.” A few weeks later... “Today, exactly one month before my 76th birthday, I benchpressed double donuts for two reps. I still have a month to try to add more reps to the lift, which I’d love to do.”
We love our members! If you would like to become a part of the Ventura Family YMCA, please visit our friendly Welcome Center or call 805.642.2131.
