BA THESIS
(in) different
Often, it‘s the little things that make us notice someone‘s difference. A gesture that differs from a normal one, a laughter at the wrong time, missing eye contact, sudden anger issues. A lack of empathy, maybe a monologue about a topic that makes the person seem a bit too nerdy. But what could it be that makes this person behave so differently? Autism comes in many shapes and shades. Although there is a common knowledge of this disorder, only a few people know about the broad variety. Most tend to think of the film „Rain man“ and of autists as of brilliant ana-
lytical geniuses. In fact, the Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) covers a lot more. Besides actual high functioning autism, asperger‘s autists or savants with a synaesthetic perception, who are able to solve highly complex math tasks within seconds, autism can also mean that a person is completely handicapped, nonverbal and suffers severely from comorbidities like epilepsy or depression. The diagnosis of autism is often hard to make due to the fluid boundaries of the symptoms. But how do the affected autists think? Do they have the impression of being different? What emotions accompany
them in everyday life? What upsets them? What makes them happy? Most of all, how do they see the same world as we do? The autistic perception is as unique as every case of autism itself. In my thesis, I am taking a closer look at multiple cases of autism, reaching from severely mentally handicapped autists up to high-functioning autistic savants like Daniel Tammet, because I want to find out, what makes them so different to us - or if they are different at all. Besides a close insight into the diagnosis, treatment, history and variety of the autisic spectrum disorder, to
get a fairly well understanding of autism in general, I also investigate the position of autists in our society – in terms of inclusion, tolerance and public understanding. In my thesis, the perception of an autist plays a crucial point for the design. A very common symptom for autism, which occurs in early stages of life, is the proclivity for exact repetition as in daily routines, patterns or behavior. This need for repetition as a way of reassurance is what fascinates me most about autism. Also, autists have a strong leaning towards the sensory perception of objects, as they like to stroke, sniff or
taste surfaces, instead of using the objects in their intended purpose. The love for details, the perception and last but not least also their emotional sensation the exclusion they have to deal with, the inability to share their own thoughts, or to fully control their body is the foundation of my thesis „(in)different“. It is the attempt to visualize a world that normal people are excluded from, to trigger a better understanding for the disorder itself and the personal effort to see autism not as a disorder, but as a gift.

P E R S O N A L _ S P A C E During my 6th term, we participated in an international contest hosted by Spacetex. The task was to create a visionary looking space suit built for the 2030 mars expedition. In my work, I focused on emotional aspects as loneliness and isolation, and how clothes could work against that in a new environment.

COLOR & TRIM / INTERIOR inspired by 4th term project topic : utopia
title :
B L U E
Based on an early state of my 4th term project, I designed an interior with the according Color & Trim Design. In the choice of the colors, I referred to the first mappings I did for UTOPIA, as also in the choice of material and shape of the interior.
The interior is inspired by the mappings seen above. The mappings include biomorph shapes, which were transmitted into smooth, soft lines in the interior design. The cool colors like lavender and deep blue initially came from the defeatist scenario we chose for our team project. Those colors in combination with silver metallic details and rough canvases give the interior a chilly, contemporary look with sportive elements.

COLOR & TRIM free work for SMART
topic : trend research title :
C O F F E E R A C E R For color & trim design, it is most crucial to keep the finger on the pulse of the times. Therefore one of the main focuses in my internship at Daimler AG was research and product benchmark. This featured project is one of the results of my trend researches, which I used to design new color & trim editions for SMART. Due to non-disclosure agreements, the final editions cannot be shown in the following.
Combining the tender subtleness of warm grey and beige shades in soft canvases and wood modern details like brushed aluminum and pure concrete creates a new interpretation of the classic term „coffeeracer“.

This 3rd semester menswear collection is concerned with modern revolutions. The politically and economically initiated protests after the financial crisis in the United States was the foundation of this collection, with the main goal of creating garments for the occupy-protesters and members of the „we are the 99 percent“ movement.
