DE ZWARTE HOND De Zwarte Hond, Rotterdam INTERNSHIP Feb I December 2021 During my master thesis I worked at De Zwarte Hond, in The Netherlands. During my internship I learned a lot about Dutch architecture, urban planning and how an office of such size functions. I had the chance to work and have an overview of project of several scales and programs, such as medium to bigger dwelling complexes, a super block with a mix of programs, a proposal for Cinerama theatre, technical drawings for an office entrance, among others. I worked in several projects in different phases (SO, VO, DO), and could adapt through them operating in several designs in a week’s work. With the team, I developed strategies, concepts, references, and presentations, producing layouts, diagrams, hand sketches, physical models, collages, 3D models, renders, and technical drawings in a clear way. During that time, I improved my skills in Adobe package, Archicad, Vectorworks, Enscape and Sketchup.
Katshoek
I Rotterdam, Netherlands
The first project, Katshoek, is the renovation of an existing office building, designed by Hugh Maaskant, and involves the implementation of about 200 new apartments. The main structure and façade of the building was kept, adding a new indented volume to the plinth and top, maintaining the original character of Maaskant’s design. In this project, I developed material and design studies for façade, apartment interior, building entrance, and the new volume additions. Solar studies, renders, hand sketches, and physical models are among my contributions. Since the project has not been published, I am not at liberty to provide it’s images. Below, a photo of the existing building shortly after its construction.

Vathorst I Amersfoort Developing phase of competition for a new dwelling block Velden 1F in Vathorst, following the urban plan from West 8. The concept focused on the pleasure of living as a starting point, how to create special spaces for the inhabitants to enjoy. Therefore, the transition between inside and outside was essential. The jump on the facade not only emphasizes the entrances, but also creates more sheltered areas and balconies. The front garden provides privacy and a more comfortable viewpoint to the outside. The gallery on the back also has subtle differences on the facade allowing plants and benches to add liveliness to the area. The brick bond and colour were studied and picked to age beautifully. My role started after the competition was won and the developing phase started. I created the 3D model for the project and made studies for those main ideas, creating different options of design and materials. Images where quickly done using Enscape for updates to the client and presentations. I also made sure the 3D model was properly done and detailed to send to the render specialist.

PEN-dorp
I Alkmaar, Netherlands
DZH was chosen to design a new housing complex for the existing office building from the architect Abe Bonnema. The new program house approximately 500 dwellings and several combined typologies such as GGB, BE-BO, galerij, kangoeroewoning, and tower typology. The masterplan, see drawing beneath, was already designed and DZH started the VO phase to develop the PEN-dorp ensemble, the one in the center. With a team of three, together with one of the associates, we came up with the building and landscape principles that follows the original grid, structuralism, and material principals from Bonnema’s design. This set of rules would be repeated to the entire project. My role was to study and research the buildings geometry using physical models. Also design the apartment layouts for the different typologies and its integration with the rest of the systems. I also set the style and created the diagrams and presentation images for this new phase. With this project I learned more in depth about woonkeur, bouwbesluit and Dutch dwelling preferences and references. Because of a non-disclosure agreement, I can only present already published images from before I have worked.

De Zwarte Hond
Meer en Vaart I Amsterdam, Netherlands Competition for a new dwelling block in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. It is designed as two volumes connected through a pergola that creates a sense of unit and a distinct transition from the public street. The interior consists of a lush garden as an extension of the existing local greenery. The focus is to integrate the garden as an essential part of the habitant’s experience, creating a private-public transition that collaborates to a more lively and enjoyable communal space. One building is for regular apartments and the other for care apartments. With a good understanding of the Woonkeur rules, I developed the apartment layouts for the four typologies. On the right, a hand sketch for one of them. I also made fast collages for the presentation that represent the main principles. This was a SO phase project.

I Zwolle, Netherlands Social dwelling I
A complex project of connection and revitalization of a vital area in Zwolle. It operates as a “urban heart”, integrating with the existent system and activating the area with new programs, such as housing, commercial, business, and educational. By the time, the project was in VO and transitioning to DO phase. I participated on the archicad layout of the care apartment building, gaining more insight on the Woonkeur Plus handbook. I made studies for the new pavilion and its relation to the urban connections, studies for the internal facades and the public-privacy transition between garden and dwellings. I also designed and made images for the kindergarten on the ground floor, creating a lively and playful corridor for the children.

VIGLIECCA & ASSOCIADOS Vigliecca & Associados INTERNSHIP June I November 2018 Most of the work I developed at Vigliecca & Associados was the elaboration of architecture and urban design competitions, such as: National Public Contest of Architecture Projects for Educational Center (CED) of CODHAB / DF; National Public Contest of Urbanism and Architecture Projects for the Housing Sector QNR 06 of CODHAB / DF; Architectural master plan and first phase of housing development of social interest, promoted by Compensar, Ingeurbe and the Faculty of Architecture and Design of the University of the Andes; Contest National Monumental Axis

Within this, it was possible to acquire knowledge at different design scales, from the development of housing apartments to a school project to a large-scale urban housing project. Within these contests I participated and developed design solutions; drawing of floorplans, sections and elevations in AutoCad; 3D models in SketchUp; post-production of images in Photoshop; conceptual diagrams in Illustrator; assembly of presentation boards in Indesign.

Social Dwelling
I Bogotá, Colombia
Winning competition promoted by Compensar, Ingeurbe and the Architecture Faculty of Universidad de los Andes. The main idea was to create residential towers with dignified low-income apartments, together with a ground floor program and plan that suit and develop the existing urban area, creating a pleasant and functional living and urban space, but also meeting the restrict demands of the housing market for reduced areas and prices. I participated in the competition phase, developing studies, diagrams and plans for the presentation.

Masterplan
I Brasília, Brazil
National Public Contest of Urbanism and Architecture Projects for a new housing sector in Brasília. The developed masterplan accommodates residential blocks, educational centre, sport centre and local commerce. The residential areas are sewn by two large green spaces that provide sport courts, leisure areas and idyllic landscaping for the resident’s daily use. Commerce and communal centres are in the sector outskirts near the existing neighbourhoods. The residential areas are structured with low-rise housing of different typologies but densely populated, creating a neighbourhood atmosphere. I participated in the elaboration of the masterplan and design of green areas. But my focus was to develop the dwellings and buildings. I drew plans, sections, elevations, diagrams and participated in the rendering team, helping with 3D and post-production. I had the privilege to be part of Vigliecca’s urban planning and dwelling craft.

sections for: demolition, floors and walls, furniture, lining and electric. After the production of these, I made the compatibilization of all of them checking for errors and better adjustments. I also produced drawings of carpentry, glazing and construction details. Construction site evaluation, with supervision, was also carried out during the work.

Inward is a movement one does every day to arrive home. Usually the line between the public street and the private room is an entrance door leading to an enclosed staircase. The concept of this design is to blur this line, creating a sequence of intimacy scales inside the complex and, therefore, designing distinct levels of communal spaces. The enclosed atrium is the hearth of this complex and reinforces the community feeling by having all living-rooms and communal spaces oriented towards it. The main vertical and horizontal circulation also embraces this central atrium, reinforcing the quality of the space as a meeting point and seized environment, making it lively. Moreover, the atrium acts as a buffer zone,
protecting its users from the climate hazards and creating a pleasant environment to stay and share. It also increases the apartments comfort. Nevertheless, the dwellings are protected by several gaps on the gallery to ensure a certain physical barrier from the communal space but also creating an enlarged space at the apartments entrance that can be incorporated to the living-room when the façade is completely open. As the final intimacy level, the bedroom is placed on the outside façade of the block. The core of this project is to experiment a different and intense way of communal living, where a part of one’s intimacy can be shared and lived peacefully within the building community.
The project is located on Feijenoord island, the group designed the “Safe Haven” urban plan, where a small oasis is placed in the interior for people’s leisure. This green area acts as a buffer for flooding and has natural water filters, water storage, communal gardens, bio-gas production, and flora and fauna nurseries, for beneficial and educational purposes. Likewise, the building also has an interior oasis, the interior microclimate creates a pleasant atmosphere to be enjoyed all year. The climate efficiency is maximized with the glass-covered atrium which acts as a greenhouse, heating during winter and ventilated during summer. Earth tubes, heat pumps, heat exchangers, and solar panels are integrated to create a more efficient cycle. The apartment typology is designed with a water core that divides it in two, the living area facing the communal atrium and the bedrooms, protecting the privacy where it is most needed.

BATH HOUSE Architecture & Cinema - Spirited Away FAU USP 9° Semester I August 2017
The Carmo Park, located at the East part of São Paulo is well known for its intimate relation with the Japanese culture, acknowledged as a reference by the Japanese community since its arrival in the beginning of the XX century. Furthermore, the park shelters several springs and streams that also feed the lake on site. For these features, the park was chosen as the site for this project that, inspired by “Spirited Away”, propose a bath house for relaxation, leisure and rehabilitation for several ages. What guided the program was the perception that the contact with water, at distinct stages of life, instigates us, cherishes us and matures us. The atmosphere of “Spirited Away” acted as inspiration for the project elaboration, recognizing in the films bath house elements of the Japanese architecture that are interesting to be retrieved. Among them, the use of wood as structure and material, the translucent materials as divisions between spaces, the central aspect of the horizontal circulation, among others. The structure is a mixture of concrete columns, slabs and blocks when in contact with water, and a wood structure to support the roof and facade. The program incorporates reception, dressing room, saunas, a large cold water pool with various partitions and depths, and a rehabilitation area.

VER SÃO PAULO South American Competition I VER 2016 FAU-USP 7° Semester I March 2016 The initial idea was to reinforce the existing pedestrian flow created between the subway station Júlio Prestes and the bus station Princesa Isabel. Together with the pedestrian crossing, the visuals of the Music Concert Hall Sala São Paulo and the existing urban planning was also considered. The spaces are created by three volumes - which include residential, commercial and cultural uses – that, although separated, create a single shape that moves away and back again from the street, designing more open and enclosed spaces. The project’s urban design marks the existing local streets by reinforcing their street alignment with the new building. The commercial 30

use is distributed along the base of the residential building and concentrated in one of the end volumes as a commercial gallery. The residential volume breaks its perpendicular shape creating a more reserved space where the entrance to the dwellings are located. On the other end, a cultural center designs a portal between two squares. One more public, towards the main street. The other, more enclosed in the center of the block, also connects with the existing square Júlio Prestes. The goal was to produce a different urban design that also connects and respects the existing surroundings.

HIGH DENSITY LANDSCAPE Project III - Social Dwelling at Diadema FAU USP 5° Semester I March 2015 This was designed near the Guarapiranga dam and Parque dos Búfalos, a local deprived of infrastructure, dwelling, basic health care and schools. Therefore, the project was designed with a nursery at the connection point with other residential communities; at the main street, an UBS (basic health care aid) and commercial buildings - for small services, working spaces and cultural activities – are located. Besides the distribution of diverse uses along the entire site to assure a lively use of the public space, the residential buildings also possess a series of
communal spaces inside. The volumes are permeated by addition or subtraction of residential modules, creating communal spaces between the dwellings. The volumetry of the complex was designed to overcome the great height difference and the building regulation limited to four storeys. Accordingly, the different site levels were elaborated to accommodate diverse related uses. Finally, the connection between the three volumes (dwelling one, dwelling two, commercial) provides a united complex in an unusual way.

VERTICAL VILLAGE Project II I Urban Dwelling I City Center FAU USP 4° Semester I August 2014 The focus of this project was how to occupy most efficiently the site, but also creating a interesting passage between the public and private space. Moreover, how to create new uses for the less illuminated corner that are not adequate for dwellings. For the ground-floor, the triangular implantation was chosen to create a breath for the passing by pedestrian, but also creating a sheltered environment for the ones that get into the complex. The irregular volume of the residential towers creates several types of dwelling for a diverse public that occupies São Paulo’s city center. The distinct
heights are based on the neighboring buildings, also providing more light for the complex. At the corner, where the lighting is scarcer, two other uses take advantage of this area. An art gallery, with access through the public ground floor, rises with different ceiling heights and spans allowing more light coming in. At the top, connecting both rooftops, a multifunctional communal space is designed for the residents, with a small library, playground, playroom and a kitchen for events on the rooftop of each tower. These two blocks create different uses and experiences for the, until then, less interesting area of the site.

URBAN FACTORY SQUARE Project 05 - Portugal FAUP 2º year Master I Feb 2020 This project is an urban planning and design for Riba d’Ave, developed in partnership with the regions Public Department. The town was founded in XX by the weaving factory owner, but in 2008 it closed, and the region entered an economic decline. The main strategy was to re-develop the area seeking to better connect with the surroundings and new uses for the factories. To reactivate the factories dynamics, interior streets were design to support new markets, stores, small business and new tech-companies. The urban designed focused in the Museum Square, because of the verge of three important routes and to connect four levels (river – public square – factory street – main avenue). To overcome the levels, a modular structure was designed on which stairs and elevators are supported. The concept was to associate the vertical route with living and recreation spaces, creating a more playful and interesting movement. the aim was to create a variety of spaces that can be interpreted in different ways, creating a lively and interesting dynamic.

BETWEEN INDUSTRIALIZATION AND TRADITION TFG I e II - Final Graduation Project FAU-USP 12° e 13º Semester I 2018 In contrast to the homogenization of popular architecture and public policies, emerges a search for a Brazilian housing module that can be adapted and revalued to each region, taking into account local social and spatial practices. Thus, the study of vernacular architecture as the closest materialization of the maximum interdependence relation between the communities and their territories acts as the design basis of this project. A research was carried out on the indigenous and African constructive techniques present in “Vale do Ribeira”, within São Paulo State, as a way of understanding the materials and relations present within that location. in question. In this way, the project is an effort to refine traditional construction techniques and adapt them with industrialized materials and techniques to assemble an expandable module. The place of study was the region of “Vale do Ribeira”, more specifically the “Quilombos” of that region, and the “pau-a-pique” technique as the basis of local wisdom. “Quilombo” was the name given to the place of refuge of African farm slaves in Brazil, where free communities were stablished in the middle of the forest. These communities still exist and must be preserved by the important culture and history they represent. The “pau-a-pique” is a rudimentary technique that has been used extensively throughout Brazil, especially in places with limited resources. It consists of a grid of sticks fixed vertically that are filled with a mud mixture, a kind of wattle and daub. The goal of the project is to try to retake this simple and effective technique that is disappearing. In this way, we opted for the manufacture of modular panels that can be easily assemble and covered with a mixture of local soil. The roof is made of bamboo, an already known construction material, but with the introduction of new application and fitting techniques. All the parts that compose this module, from the foundation to the door and window panels, were designed. Next, a brief manual showing the steps for construction, detailing the fittings of each existing connection, was created. As a final project, a site was chosen where a dwelling of six modules would be set up, forming a house of approximately 60m² with three bedrooms, a comfortable and dignified space. 44

POETIC REASON: THERME VALS Graduation Thesis - Portugal FAUP Master Thesis I Dec 2021 Architecture is a spatial, temporal, and sensorial art in the sense that spatial qualities are experienced by an individual over time. Spatial perception requires the engage¬ment of the body and all its sensorial potential linked to subjectivity. The synthesis of these qualities can be interpreted as an “atmosphere”, the intermediary between space and its comprehension. Placing the atmosphere as the essence of architectural quality, this dissertation aims to understand how to think and design the space built from the atmosphere. Peter Zumthor is one of the contemporary architects who overtly puts this theme into practice. In the book “Atmospheres”, he proposes nine principles for the elaboration of an architectural atmosphere. Due to its atmospheric success, Therme Vals was used as a key oeuvre to analyze his design methodology. The dissertation methodology has an investigative theoretical nature, based on the analysis of the theme and the oeuvre, to question the nine
points mentioned by Zumthor, adding a personal and subjective bias characteristic of the concept of at¬mosphere. The research is divided into four stages: think, materialize, experience, and unravel. The first addresses the theory involving the perception of space and a brief introduction to sensory architecture. In the second, the starting point is the Therme Vals, contemplating the necessary ramifications for its understanding and exploring Peter Zumthor’s methodology. The third is a personal description of the visit to the building. The latter seeks to relate the personal experience with the design intentions and artifices, using Zumthor’s nine principles as a framework. An attempt is made to unveil the obscurantism that hovers over the atmosphere theme in a more palpable search related to possible design tools. This dissertation intends to contribute to the study of the practice of architecture, highlighting the importance of a sensitive view of architectural qualities that have been little discussed.
