From village to fork

Many restaurants in retirement villages serve fresh local produce, but The Greenhouse at Rangeford Villages’s award-winning Wadswick Green community, in Corsham, Wiltshire, takes this approach one step further. Under the direction of chef Adrian Warren, the restaurant uses produce grown directly on the village. Menu highlights include slow-roasted tomatoes, black pudding, potato beignets and pan-fried smoked bacon finished with a caramelised onion puree; chicken supreme nestled on ratatouille finished with potato gnocchi and pesto; and apple and cardamom tarte tatin with vanilla-seed ice cream, all accompanied by an excellent selection of wines and beers. ‘We pride ourselves in offering a wide choice of dishes at The Greenhouse restaurant,’ says Rafael Marques, village manager at Wadswick Green (where properties are only available for sale). ‘With an increasing demand for healthy food options and locally grown produce, we asked our landscaping team to begin growing fruit and vegetables right here at the village. Not only does our chef incorporate the seasonal harvest in The Greenhouse menu, residents are also able to purchase it—including the village-grown flowering annuals for their balcony plant pots.’ The Greenhouse is open to Wadswick Green residents and to the general public. Bright and white New year, fresh start in whiter-than-white houses

West Sussex, £1.35 million A little mackerel-fishing hamlet until the 18th century, when Georgian Society flocked to the seaside, Worthing, with its Art Deco pier, is as popular as ever. This Grade II*-listed five-floor townhouse on Park Crescent—designed in the 1830s by Amon Henry Wilds in a serpentine shape with a triumphal arch at the entrance, overlooking Amelia Park—is a rare occurrence on the market. Beautifully kept, it has six bedrooms (including one in a stand-alone apartment on the lower ground floor), two garden terraces, a balcony and a roof terrace. Winkworth (01903 216219) Hampshire, £620,000 Three vaulted bedrooms at 17th-century Fern Cottage, in the east Hampshire village of Upper Froyle—about four miles from Alton and six from Jane Austen’s Chawton—peep out beneath thatch towards views over a mostly lawned garden and lovely countryside. There are plenty of exposed beams throughout and, downstairs, two reception rooms off a galleried kitchen. Knight Frank (01256 630971)

Cornwall, £2.85 million Arts-and-Crafts Perran Cove enjoys a south-west-facing ‘grandstand’ position, say agents, offering jawdropping views over the Helford River, with its world-renowned sailing waters, and unspoilt ancient woodland. This tranquil spot is at the end of a private road on the Budock Vean estate, within walking distance of a golf course and wrapped in 1⅓ acres of landscaped park peppered with camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and macrocarpas. Barrelled ceilings, granite fireplaces, balconies and sun terraces brightened by wisteria offer plenty of character and there are five bedrooms, as well as a studio above the garage. A private right of way leads down to a little-known cove and there’s also a boat store. Perran Cove is near the village of Mawnan Smith, with Falmouth six miles away. Lillicrap Chilcott (01872 273473) London TW11, £3 million Charming Weir Cottage, at the entrance to the Teddington Riverside development with its 2½ acres of landscaped gardens, was originally a lock-keeper’s home, before becoming the official gatehouse for the famous Teddington Film Studios. The Morecambe & Wise Show, Pop Idol and The Office were filmed there, to name a few, together with the lost 1934 Murder at Monte Carlo, Errol Flynn’s first major role, which is now on the British Film Institute’s 75 Most Wanted list. With four bedrooms, this architectural witness to history has now been beautifully restored— gable ends, curved turret and balconies pristine—and the views over the garden towards the river are uninterrupted. Buckinghamshire, £2.2 million Formerly a well-known equestrian centre, Dorcas Farm retains two stable blocks amid 10 acres of formal gardens, a vegetable garden, orchard, paddocks, tennis court (needs restoring) and an outdoor school. The house itself is, we’ll admit, not strictly white—there’s a hint of ecru—and has five bedrooms, four reception rooms and a one-bedroom annexe. There are nearly 5,800sq ft of versatile outbuildings, boast agents, the whole set in the village of Stoke Hammond, with Fenny Stratford about 2½ miles south. Michael Graham (01908 399199) 89

HEN the ice retreated from Cumbria some 10,000 years ago, it left behind a dramatic landscape of carved peaks, wide U-shaped valleys and 99 lakes, tarns and meres that provided a dramatic backdrop to the many notable Arts-and-Crafts houses that were built there in a brief, but brilliant decade in the early 20th century. Drawn by the magnificent scenery, a ready supply of stone and slate and an abundance of local labour and craftsmen, leading architects of the day, such as C. F. A. Voysey, M. H. Baillie Scott and Sir Edwin Lutyens, built impressive holiday homes in the Artsand-Crafts style for wealthy northern mill owners and industrialists along the shores of Windermere or high on the wooded slopes of the surrounding hills. They were joined by lesser-known local architects, such as Yorkshire-born Francis Whitwell, who, in 1903, built his family home on a glorious site above the Brathay Valley, a five-minute drive from Ambleside on the Coniston road. One side of the house, which he named Nanny Brow after the crag on which it sits, faces towards Brathay Church and Windermere; the other side looks down over the gardens to Ivy Crag. The front of the house faces south-west, with views down the valley towards the head of the Langdales, with Wrynose Pass in the distance. Whitwell lived at Nanny Brow with his wife, Dorothy, and their three children, until his death in 1943, after which the house was

sold and later became a hotel. Sympathetically extended in the 1980s with the addition of the curved north wing, it was showcased in Arts and Crafts Houses in the Lake District (2014) by Matthew Hyde and Esmé Whittaker and as part of the region’s successful bid for UNESCO World Heritage status in 2017. The hotel closed in the early 2000s and was eventually rescued from dilapidation by Sue and Peter Robinson, who ran a successful holiday-letting business in the Cotswolds and were looking to expand. Their decision to take on the run-down property was boosted by Mrs Robinson’s childhood memories of family holidays in the Lake District, where she often admired the house perched on the steep side of Loughrigg Fell. In an interview with a local magazine, she recalls how, shortly before their move to the Lakes, a lady moved in next door to their Cotswold cottages. She turned out to be Francis Whitwell’s granddaughter and regaled the Robinsons with stories of the Whitwell family’s long-standing friendship with Beatrix Potter and their regular picnics on Loughrigg Fell. Having secured their Ambleside base in 2010, the Robinsons spent the best part of two years restoring and enhancing the many period features in the house, including original oak floors and panelling and carved oak fireplaces. Typical of the period are the plasterwork ceiling friezes in the main reception room depicting large flowers and plants, less so an additional frieze illustrating 91

Gallop into racing history at The Grange, Wiltshire, where the updated, five-bedroom Arts-and-Crafts house sits in 9¾ acres. £3.25m

small birds, frogs, rabbits and snails—perhaps a nod to the works of Potter. Having run the 14,581sq ft main house and its 746sq ft annexe as a luxury B&B for more than a decade, Nanny Brow’s dedicated custodians have decided to call it a day. Consequently, the iconic Arts-and-Crafts house, realised from an original painting by Whitwell himself and comprising his original entrance hall, sitting room and dining room and Whitwell suite with its signature oriel window, plus six further reception rooms, three kitchens, 13 bedrooms, 14 bathrooms and two annexe cottages, is now on the market through the Chester office of Strutt & Parker (01244 354880). Selling agent Tom David quotes a guide price of £4.95 million for Nanny Brow, which is set in almost five acres of natural gardens, with 96 metres (315ft) of single-bank fishing on the River Brathay and direct access to the surrounding National Trust land via a private gate from the grounds. He suggests that the bedrooms in the 1980s extension could be repurposed, either as additional reception rooms or as a substantial leisure complex. The launch onto the market of another Arts-and-Crafts-style gem, The Grange at

Beckhampton, near Marlborough, Wiltshire, at ‘offers over £3.25m’ through Oxford-based agents The Country House Department (01865 338300), recalls a golden era in the history of Thoroughbred racing, when Beckhampton Stables was home to a succession of legendary trainers, among them Fred Darling, Sir Noel Murless and Jeremy Tree. The Grange was built in the 1920s by Herbert Blagrave, scion of an illustrious Berkshire family who inherited a large estate in Reading and its environs on his father’s death in 1926. This allowed Blagrave to establish his own private training establishment close to the property owned by champion trainer Darling, where he trained a small string of about 20 horses for himself and his wife, Gwen. A decade later, Blagrave purchased the Harwood Stud near Newbury from the estate of Lady James Douglas, owner and breeder of the 1918 Triple Crown winner Gainsborough, who became the stud’s founding stallion. Blagrave believed in the fusion of top-class French and English bloodlines and sourced most of his French stock through the celebrated breeder and theatre impresario Leon Volterra, whose influential

Bois Roussel Stud had a huge impact on British racing in the post-war years. Blagrave shored up his stud-farm portfolio by acquiring Darling’s stable and gallops at Beckhampton in 1954, leasing them back to Sir Gordon Richards and new incumbent Tree, who was eventually succeeded by his long-time assistant, Roger Charlton. On Blagrave’s death in 1981, the successful Harwood Stud, now the Gainsborough Stud, was bought by Maktoum Al Maktoum before passing to Sheikh Maktoum’s brother, Sheikh Mohammed. Located at the end of a tree-lined gravel drive, The Grange sits at the centre of 9¾ acres of land on the edge of Beckhampton, with outstanding views over the neighbouring gallops and the rolling acres of the North Wessex Downs AONB. Cleverly updated by its present owners, who acquired it in 2011, the house offers a compelling mix of fresh, light and modern spaces, including four spacious reception rooms, five bedrooms and five bath/shower rooms. It comes with a onebedroom lodge, a gun room and library, tennis court and swimming pool, plus a kitchen garden, gym and stableyard with a tack room and garden room.
