Moist Natural Lipstick Based on Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) JULIANA BINTI SHAIBUN AK 090065 4 SKB

Lipstick is one of the decorative cosmetic products that command a unique market segment (Benett W., 1983)

To establish the formulation of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) based moisturizing lipstick.

Process Evaluation

Material Used In Lipstick Formulation

Virgin coconut oil (VCO) VCO is pure oil extracted from fresh coconut meat. Lauric and capliric acid are the types of medium chain triglycerides found in virgin coconut oil. VCO contains fatty acids that are important in maintaining the skin barrier and thus acts as an occlusive agent (Baumann, L. 2009).

Preliminary Phases First stage • Objective : To identify the minimum and maximum values of base ingredients used in the lipstick formulation.

• Use : Response Surface Method (RSM) in Design Expert 6.0.8.

Design of Experiments (DOE)

Design Expert 6.0.8

Study the behaviour of a product, process, or simulation by changing some of the design parameters (Bhagawan, 2009).

Melting Point Measurement Equipment : • Differential Scanning Calorimeter(DSC). Procedure : • 50 mg product samples were heated from 20oC to 100oC at scanning rate 10oC/min (Suba Shaikh, 2008).

Breaking Load Test Objective : • To determine the strength of lipstick Procedure : - Weight at which lipstick breaks is considered as the breaking point (Bharat Vishwakarma, 2011).

Sensorial Test Objective : - To evaluate the quality of the products as perceived by the users. Procedure : - User rank the samples based on hardness, smoothness and moist characteristics through the Hedonic scale.

Stability Test • Lipsticks were placed for stability studies at different in temperature, 4oC, 20-25oC, 30-40oC for a month and were observed the effects like bleeding, sweating, streaking and blooming (Saba Shaikh, 2008).

Preliminary phase -

Use Box-Behnken in DOE. Different composition of beeswax, VCO and hydrogenated palm oil (Mariani Rajin, 2007).

Analysis of Melting Point

Figure 1: Effect of wax and oil composition on melting point of the lipsticks (Buhri Ariffin, 2002)

• Melting point of the lipstick increase with the increasing of wax

Figure 2: Effect of wax and oil composition on the penetration time of lipstick sample (Buhri Ariffin, 2002)

• Penetration time increases with increase of wax

Analysis of Sensory Score

Table 2: Optimization target for the response (Mariani Rajin, 2007)

• The highest score indicates the most acceptable formulation.

Stability Test Bleeding Sweating Streaking Blooming After placed at different in temperature, 4oC, 20-25oC, 30-40oC for a month.

• The result should be no bleeding, sweating, streaking and blooming (Saba Shaikh, 2008).

Stable formulation of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) based moisturizing lipstick should be achieve.
