2SOUTH BRONX X-CHANGE
in collaboration with Sarwat Yunus
This studio combined methods of traditional research (Site Analysis and Precedent Study) alongside more experimental envisioning workshops with our client/collaborators in the South Bronx. Our proposal sought to mediate ideas gathered from our “envisioning sessions” with the community and our own design intentions. An opportunity was found through a thorough analysis of the site and its context that granted us permission to use the center of the existing structure as a communal green space that would be shared by the community and the organizations. The challenge of this project was to create an intervention that would not only respect the community and their ambition , but also respect the site’s history and the buildings existing integrity.
Site
Observing the existing massing and site conditions.
Greenhouse
Simultaneously introducing a greenhouse roof that takes advantage of the sites abundant southern light conditions.
Special Conditions
Looking at specific conditions of the existing massing a drop in the east to allow light in the basement and a shift in the form on the east wall.
Zoning
Considering greenhouse typologies and taking into account ideas of northern and western expansion to the form which allow for larger cultivation of urban roof.
Intervention
Defining the core as an important moment for the public sector.
Final Result
The end result is a form that respects ideals of the existing structure ,with the tension of an inserted green volume that purposely contasts the two halves of entire building.

CARBON PLEXUS
USING SKIN TO ADRESS THE ISSUE OF AIR QUALITY FALL 2015 VERTICAL STUDIO SEAN RICKENBACKER
3CARBON PLEXUS
in collaboration with Jamie Huang
The environment and biological impact of air quality has plagued many civilizations throughout history. The industrialized age in particular has recorded unprescedented negative environmental change in addition to staggering health related conditions. The post industrial through to the post modern era have each continued to further compromise the fragile environmental equilibrium that many scientist have caution is necessary for the continued habitation of the planet. This project sought to tackle problems through the development of a multi-layered skin system that purifies dirty air and releases clean air at a higher elevation. Using computational design we were able to give the titanium dioxide skin a new form that allows for an aerodynamic airflow that is funneled to a mechanical room at the lowest level of the structure. This project allowed us to explore the systems and data driven design in a way that pushes conventional ideas of architecture.

ARCHWAY
SHIFTING TO AN UNCONVENTIONAL USE OF BRICKS SPRING 2015 STUDIO CHRISTIAN VOLKMANN
4ARCHWAY
in collaboration with Wei-Ying Zhang
For our first comprehensive design studio we were asked to continue with our brick competition project and develop construction drawings. This allowed us to further understand brick and masonry construction methods as well as construction drawings. The project connects the 30’ height difference with a continuous curvilinear (looped) path formed by brick arches, One is guided into a naturally lit gallery space at the central lower level which is the connected by stairs to the library above. The structural system features brick load bearing half arches that dictate the path one is to take between the spaces. This system also serves as the support for the Guastavino roof which features a skylight allowing the incorporation of the sites natural lighting conditions.

URBAN LIVING: REACTIVE COURTYARD INVESTIGATING THE COURTYARD TYPOLOGY Fall 2014 STUDIO CHRISTIAN VOLKMANN
5REACTIVE COURTYARD
This project was delevoped as a reaction to what i believed to be the misuse of common spaces found between several buildings on the site. Further in the analysis , its noticeable that this block is the only one out of several adjacent buildings that use their interstitial spaces as a trash dump. This residential building attempts to alleviate the current actions being taken in the backyard spaces of other buildings on the block. It blurs the line between backyard and courtyard as it places an emphasis on its core through the placement of openings , greenery, and balconies, all of which are deliberately placed to encourage interactions between the residents.
