Dear Western Queens, Western Queens is a perpetual source of inspiration. Not only are we the most diverse borough in the city, but we are the birthplace of so much creativity. This month, we check in with a couple who are creating bold flavors at the Falchi Building, where we also meet with a jazz guitarist who loves to make art from his food. Queens not only blazes trails in food and art, but the Patricia Kenny Dance Collection premieres new works in dance at the Queens Theatre this month, as well. And we are reminded that many of the city’s biggest stars live right here in our neighborhood, with the fantastic new on-line show, Broadway Nosh. As the cover suggests, we crack open some terrific new egg-focused brunches, try a new pizzeria, and sample yet another Korean restaurant. We even introduce you to the first gin distillery in Queens. Plus, we check in at the Paper Factory Hotel, which is ranked one of the best hotels in Queens by Fodor’s Travel—I mean, c’mon—they are the home of the new Mundo, which is better than ever. As always, please share with us your own personal anecdotes, and send me any tips, comments, or events to bhawks@boromag.com. We look forward to sharing many more stories with you in BRADLEY HAWKS news, editor-in-chief the months ahead. Happy St. Patty’s Day! Gratefully yours, Bradley Hawks

Visitors to the Falchi Building’s Food Box in Long Island City only have a few months remaining to enjoy the whimsical creations on display by renowned jazz guitarist, Bill Wurtzel. Bill has been making artistic, healthy breakfasts just to amuse his wife, Claire, since they were married in 1961. Their book, Funny Food is in its second printing, and a new book is being published by Rizzoli International. “I only started photographing my food art 7 years ago,” explains Bill. “Since then I made about 7,000 dishes.” We wondered what a typical dinner might look like in the Wurtzel home, and Bill shared, “Our 50th anniversary was a brunch and all guests were invited to make Funny Food.” Bill & Claire do workshops that make it fun for kids to learn about nutrition. They also do workshops for adults on the power of play. You can stop by the Food Box to view his creations. Better yet—throw all convention to the wind, grab some healthy ingredients, and start playing with your food! Shakesapple

Courage

Interview + Images By

BORO: How did you start the Astoria Distilling company? Chris Murillo: It took a lot of work. Starting in 2012, after I decided that I wanted to create the first distillery in Queens since prohibition, I went about researching everything I could about distilling and the spirits business. By mid-2012 I formed a company, and was well on my way to building a business plan, financial plan and, of course, getting a formulation for Queens Courage and all the branding and permits. BORO: What made you change careers from law? CM: Both of my grandfathers were engineers and worked with their minds, but also their hands, so I think the need to make something with my hands is deeply ingrained in me. Once I had the idea to build the first distillery in Queens, my passion for cocktails and spirits combined with my passion for working with my hands to convince me that leaving my law firm job was the right thing for me. BORO: What research did you have to do to come up with Queens Courage? CM: Once we decided to do an old tom gin, and we went about finding out as much as we could about old tom from books and the few remaining old tom brands out there. In the end, it took us over a year and a half to formulate Queens Courage through a mixture of historical research and trial-and-error on a lab still. BORO: Why an Old Tom Gin? CM: I love classic cocktails, and many of these call for old tom gin, which was very popular in the 1800’s and pre-prohibition era.

It’s no secret that Queen’s has been expanding into a cultural hotspot of its own over the last few years. One of my favorite additions to this boom has been the Astoria Distilling company and its spirit, Queens Courage—rated the Highest Old Tom Gin in the Ultimate Spirits challenge. BORO spoke with Chris Murillo about his transition from lawyer to founder of a distillery, what it takes to create a spirit, and his favorite cocktails.

Lizabeth Nieves

BORO: How did you wind up living in Astoria? CM: Some friends of ours moved here and we visited their housewarming party. My wife and I fell in love with Astoria, so as soon as our lease was up we moved here. That was back in 2008, and since that time we bought an apartment here, and plan to stay in Astoria indefinitely. BORO: What’s next for the Astoria Distilling Company? CM: The next step for us is to open up our on facility in Queens. I’d like to get a space where we can blend and bottle in Queens by the end of the year, and ultimately I want to have production, start-to-finish, in Queens. BORO: What’s your favorite Queens Courage cocktail? CM: It is the dead of winter, so I’m enjoying Dirty Martinis most recently, I was enjoying Martinez Cocktails, a classic cocktail with Queens Courage, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and orange bitters. BORO: What is your favorite local spot to get a cocktail? CM: Mar’s is great and happens to be on my way home from the office—you can’t miss with oysters and cocktails. BORO: What are some upcoming events with Queens Courage? CM: The best place to look is on our website, QueensCourage.com. Under ‘Events’ there’s a calendar with our upcoming events, and that gets updated as soon as we book something, so I encourage people to check it periodically.

For more info & where to purchase Queens Courage, check out astoriadistilling.com and queenscourage.com 10 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2015

at the Paper Factory Hotel The original Mundo opened a decade ago, and maintained a loyal following for over seven years. When it finally closed its doors, many Astorians were devastated. Not only did people miss the whimsical blend of Argentine and Turkish cuisines, but they lost a gathering spot for close friendships, which included owners Guillermo Lucerofabbi and Canalp Caner. “The whole idea about Mundo, in general,” explains Lucerofabbi, “besides just food and drink—was always to do a restaurant with entertainment.” While the old location just off of Broadway catered to the restaurant component, the intimate space made it difficult, if not impossible, to host much performing. In the new space, much of the menu has returned. But now, the seating capacity has more than quadrupled. “We only had thirteen tables before,” smiles Lucerofabbi. Now, between the main floor and lower level they can accommodate over two hundred guests. Plus there is a piano on each floor, as well.

18 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2015

Fans of the former space will find familiarity in the stunning Turkish lamps hanging above the bar, hand-carved from gourds like Tiffany lampshades. They can also enjoy many of the same flavors—in particular the ‘red sonjas’—red lentil quenelles of bulgur (cracked wheat), scallion, parsley, and a blend of oriental spices which are served on wraps of lusciously green bibb lettuce with lemon wedges. Flaky baked empanadas are stuffed with braised short ribs or spinach and feta. A generous bowl of Ottoman manti are some of the best dumplings around. Tender, miniature pasta pillows are stuffed with seasoned ground beef, then topped with a blanket of garlic, butter, mint, and creamy yogurt. The flavors are simple and fresh, and served with a ramekin of ground sumac to add by the pinch for a little extra, earthy spice. Peruvian ceviche sings of fluke with lime juice, cuzco corn, sweet potato, and an entire shot glass of leche de tigre. There is even a homemade veal sausage, as well as duck magret.

l

Basically, the same warm hospitality has transferred to a mature new space, with an expanded menu and the welcome addition of designer cocktails—like the Pachamama, a blend of Cimarron Tequila Silver, Bauchants orange liqueur, basil, english cucumber, peppercorn extract, lime, and aleppo pepper salt. If you were already a fan, come reunite with old friends and flavors. If Mundo is new to you, then grab a plate or two to share, order a cocktail, and enjoy the show. Regardless, we are sure this place will become one of your longstanding favorites.

Be sure to check the online calendar for upcoming events. MARCH 2015 | BOROMAG.COM | 19

HOTELS “I designed this corner in homage to Harlem,” smiles Gal Sela, the designer of the Paper Factory Hotel in Long Island City. He gestures to a stainless steel drum that has been capped with a glass tabletop, surrounded by low-sitting bucket seats in multiple colors. His pace quickens in excitement as he moves along the corridor. “Notice how these walls zigzag?” He points down the geometrically sophisticated hallway. “They were designed that way so there aren’t too many straight lines. Do you mind if we take the stairs? I just love these staircases.”

The Paper Factory Hotel

Over the course of the next hour I am woven through this exotic hotel wonderland, and it is no surprise Fodor’s Travel has named it one of the best hotels in Queens. I would certainly take it a step further—this might be one of my favorite hotels, anywhere. The entire hotel is like a grownup wonderland. There’s a glowing red phone booth in the lobby, followed by miniature cars from some faraway amusement park. Polished concrete floors and vaulted ceilings are simultaneously industrial, yet warm. Each piece of furniture, artwork, and tchotchke carries with it a fascinating story from Sela’s world travels. In one room, I point out a wooden chair that I like. “That’s from a classroom in India,” he explains. “I travel the world myself collecting all of the things you see throughout the hotel.” The hotel boasts 122 unique rooms of varying sizes and capabilities, as well as over 15,000 sq. feet of event space for corporate events, weddings, and parties. Located just a block off of Northern Boulevard and E/M/R trains, it couldn’t possibly be more convenient for quick access to Manhattan—exceptionally ideal for anyone visiting the city. 20 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2015

T

his past October, Butcher Bar quietly slid its address one building east when it took over the space formerly occupied by Thai Pavilion. While they successfully maintained a similar energy with the menu and décor, a few noticeable changes took place. Not only did the dining room expand from twentytwo seats to over seventy (including a bar that seats fourteen), but Butcher Bar also officially added an actual bar. Guests can now order wine, beer, and a broad selection of liquor to chase down their smoked meats and burnt ends. You might even warm your engine with a shot of 100-proof Midnight Moonshine from North Carolina.

Fortunately, the place still feels a lot like a true nod to a butcher shop, with cleavers dangling from above the bar and a glass showcase featuring cuts of meat beneath a giant roll of brown butcher paper. A large high top table was forged from the reclaimed wood from a water tower in Brooklyn. And they still find no shame in paying homage to pit masters and restaurateurs who paved the way. 24-karat gold lettering on the windows salute the Meatball Shop. A collage of old periodicals arranged to spell out “Eat Real Food” pays tribute to the Meat Hook in Brooklyn. But while there are obvious hat tips to the greats who have come before, Chef Orlando Martinez is no rookie at the rodeo. His menu is simple, straightforward, and just downright tasty. A native of Austin, Sanchez takes it low and slow, with the pulled pork and brisket smoking nightly for at least twelve hours. Beyond the standard barbecue menu, which is one of the best in

22 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2015

the city, the team also serves up some exceptional sandwiches. A ‘cheesesteak’ with shaved brisket and a blend of three cheeses just might bring you to tears, and that’s before you even try the ‘meat candy’—the exceptional burnt ends. Just order ‘em plain. Bob’s burger—a blend of smoked bacon and brisket—is also definitely one to be reckoned with. And you’re going to have dreams about ‘The Monster’ 50/50, which is a monstrous sandwich of brisket and pulled pork, topped with onions, pickles, coleslaw, BBQ, and habañero sauce.

Chef Orlando Martinez

Upgrades to the menu include smoked and fried chicken wings, as well as loaded French fries. “We simply had to get a fryer in the new location,” admits the chef. “Too many people wanted fries with their ‘cue, so we listened.” But fries aren’t the only kind of spud being served. The menu also boasts a new ‘Butcher Bowl’, which slathers a pile of mashed potatoes with yellow corn, jack cheese, and your choice of smoked pork or BBQ chicken. If all of that has you somewhat excited, then buckle your britches—or rather, loosen them a notch—because in two weeks Chef Sanchez is rolling out a twenty-item barbecue-inspired brunch menu. When I was offered a chance to try out some of the new items debuting the weekend of March 21st, I didn’t need to be asked twice. Hand on my heart, they are serving the most incredible, outrageous, finger licking fantastic breakfast pastry I have ever tried. Forget the cronut. They have a Bacon Jam Roll. This buttery, tender country biscuit is coiled with homemade bourbon bacon jam, then glazed with icing rendered from the bacon fat. Oh, and you can even get it topped with a fried egg. This devilish little sticky bun fills up a cast iron skillet, and is so good it’ll curl your toes. You can crown anything with an egg and I will probably try it, so I had to sample the new brunch burger. It’s a 6 oz. Butcher’s Burger

dressed with mild cheddar, candied bacon, bacon jam, and a fried egg. For another eggs-tra special sampling, I tried a skillet of some beautiful brisket hash. A potpourri of cubed potatoes, peppers, and onions is tossed with miniature pieces of brisket that has been smoked for 12 hours and dry rubbed. All of that glorious hash is then blanketed with a river of country gravy, then topped with a glorious fried egg and a dash of black pepper. The last morsel enjoyed was a skillet of the new Half-Baked Mac & Cheese, which marries their grass fed beef chili with their creamy 3-cheese béchamel, before topping it with a layer of jack cheese and bacon bits. That skillet is then bronzed in the oven, merging all of those flavors beneath a crust of cheese and bacon. Now I’ll be the first to admit I had to jog up and down 30th Ave a few times after I finished that smorgasbord. But believe me when I tell you, it was definitely worth a few laps. The new brunch at Butcher Bar is one of the best around. Heck, the new Butcher Bar is one of the best restaurants around, period. I guess you could say they ‘smoke’ the competition. 37-10 30th Avenue, Astoria, NY 11103 (718) 606-8140 www.butcherbar.com MARCH 2015 | BOROMAG.COM | 23

No Eggs-planation Needed Story + Images By

BRADLEY HAWKS

The Giannakas brothers have done it again—this time with a stunning new menu at Ovelia. Ovelia has always been a quintessential representation of the best of Astoria, in the sense it marries tradition and culture with youth and innovation. These new dishes are certainly no exception.

A classic strapatsada features spicy soutzouki sausage beside fluffy eggs that have been scrambled with tomato and feta. Or for a creative brunch sandwich, you might opt for the tiropita toast— manouri cheese, granny smith apples, and Ovelia’s signature brunch fruit compote (you might want to order a jar of this stuff ).

At brunch, guests have always been able to order a frittata loaded with French fries and feta cheese. Named after their grandmother, it is lovingly called Yiayia’s Omelette. An open-faced ham chip-drip steals the show, with thinly shaved slices of ham sautéed with creamy mozzarella and mushrooms, cloaked in a bright, citrusy hollandaise.

But perhaps the crowning glory of the whole menu is the Kreatopita, over which the Giannakas family toiled the longest before settling on the winning recipe. Juicy pulled leg of lamb and kasseri cheese are encrusted in angel hair shreds of phyllo and served with a ramekin of herbed yogurt.

But some of the most delectable choices are the newcomers to the menu. “The whole family collaborated hard on these dishes,” explains Chris Giannakas, who runs the front of the house while his brother, Pete, heads the kitchen. “We all come from varying viewpoints, but I think you will like the end result.”

Factor in a brunch cocktail, or even a mocktail. The Mastic Lemonade is like a virgin mojito garnished with a dollop of fresh fondant, like the brothers used to enjoy as kids.

Consider the new benedict of chickpea croquettes and a poached egg, all stacked atop a mound of riced saffron cauliflower. As a matter of fact, benedicts take many forms on the new menu. Spanakopita (Greek spinach phyllo pie) forms the base of the beautiful eggs Florentine, draped in that vibrant hollandaise. Or you can get your poached eggs over warm sofrito and a coffee skirt steak, if you’d rather.

32 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2015

There’s a little bit of the family found throughout the entire menu. And we think this newest chapter is one of the tastiest yet. Ovelia Psistaria & Bar

BODY & SOUL

Eat Since March is the month of St. Patty’s and everything green, we thought it would be the perfect time to reflect on the kind of greens you can consume—and no, we don’t mean beer tinted with yellow and blue food coloring. Naturally-green foods are low in calories, high in antioxidants and phytonutrients, are easy on your glucose levels, and are pretty much carb free. Now don’t be mistaken—of course the way you prepare these foods can change their nutritional value. Here are just a few of our favorite local finds that still keep the green ingredients pretty good for you. We’ll let the pictures do the talking.

It’s Friday at the Falchi Building, and that means a bold new menu of ceviche from the team that opened their stand in the Food Box last month. Mimi and Diego may have been running their lunch counter, Don Tapas, for nearly a month—and they may have even gotten engaged just two months ago—but their story goes back even further by nearly two and half years. The lovers met while they were line cooks at William Hallet in Astoria, where they worked the brunch shift together for one and a half years. Though the two have amicably parted ways with their former employer, they carry with them much of what they learned. In fact, Diego still cooks for Mario Batali at Casa Mono when he isn’t preparing his own dishes.

Venezuela, while Diego moved here from Columbia in ’99. The two have gathered a refined collective palate along the way, as well as a respect for fresh, locally sourced goods. “We use only the highest quality ingredients, and we love to support local businesses,” explains Mimi. The bread is custom-baked from Rollo Mio in Maspeth, and the meats come from Despaña in Woodside. “We have a passion for bringing people together to try new and amazing things.” Things like their tortilla Española, which is a delicate omelet with garlic, onions, and potatoes topped with a smear of aioli dulce made from roasted garlic poached in sweet sherry wine. Everything at Don Tapas is tiny, affordable, and tasty. Now that’s the kind of meal you will want to sink your teeth into.

“Everything we do is made with love,” explains Diego. It’s the kind of love that the customers can taste. Striped bass soaks in a traditional Peruvian salsa creola of cilantro, onions, mandarin, and lime. Shrimp and calamari take on ginger, star anise, yuzu, and sesame seeds topped with wonton strips in a Japanese-Peruvian fusion known as Nekki. Next is a plate pan con tamate—literally bread with tomatoes—the first in a series of what Diego refers to as montadito, or a tapas-sized roll topped with anything. The next baguette is sliced open and stuffed with homemade meatballs, imported manchego, and peppers. My personal favorite is loaded with plump slices of mildly spicy chorizo sausage, caramelized onions, and piquillo peppers. The aim of Don Papas is to offer savory morsels, tapasstyle, from around the world, and this couple has nailed it. Mimi is from

NIGHTLIFE & ENTERTAINMENT

Known as Broadway’s spunky redhead, Kirsten Wyatt is an endearing comedienne, touching vocalist, and creator of characters that stick in your head and heart. She is a shining veteran of the Broadway stage (Annie, Shrek, High Fidelity, Grease, Urinetown, and many more) and the television screen. With her new project, Broadway Nosh, she is inviting us into her Astoria kitchen for delicious recipes, hilarious hijinks, and a lovely glimpse into the lives of some of New York’s most beloved performers.

Kirsten Wyatt and Laura Osnes

Giving Us A Taste of

Great White Way Interview By

Hayley Bridgewater

BORO: In your own words, describe “Broadway Nosh.” Kirsten Wyatt: Broadway Nosh is a web series hosted by me, Kirsten Wyatt, where I cook and chat with my favorite Broadway stars. We like to say I take a delicious bite outta Broadway. Corny? Absolutely. Hello! I’m in musical theater! BORO: Where can we find it and watch it? And how often will it be available? KW: Our premier episode was released February 12. Season 1 consists of 7 episodes that will be released every Thursday (except March 5). You can watch it on www.broadwaynosh.com, and we are also partnering with Broadway.com for this first season! BORO: How did you come up with the idea for the project? KW: The idea for Broadway Nosh has been simmering for a few years now. (Oy. No pun intended.) Anyway, the idea began when I was working at a theater away from home for four months. I don’t know if it was conscious or not, but in an effort to create a family atmosphere, I started cooking for the cast and crew. Most of the time everyone would end up gathered in my tiny apartment after the show and we’d make cocktails, whip up some nosh and rehash the day. That fellowship is what has helped me stay in this business for 16 years. BORO: Has cooking always been an interest? KW: No, But eating has! I taught myself to cook out of necessity. Acting is not the most financially stable career. BORO: Can you give us a tease of the individuals we might be seeing on the show? KW: Our first season is stacked with some of Broadway’s brightest stars. We open with Laura Osnes. Then comes Krysta Rodriguez, The Skivvies,

42 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2015

Lesli Margherita, Telly Leung, Julia Murney, & Lindsay Mendez. BORO: How do you decide on the recipes? KW: The recipe ideas come from my guests - family recipes, something they cook on a regular basis or just something they love to eat. I have yet to meet a Broadway actor who doesn’t like to eat. BORO: How long have you been a resident of Astoria? KW: My husband and I moved to Astoria in 2006. We love it. BORO: Do you feel like Astoria plays a part in this show? KW: Astoria plays a huge part in my life, so it absolutely plays a part in the show. I do as much food shopping as possible in Astoria— mostly Green Bay Organics & Food Bazaar. All my meat is from K & T, the wine in my episodes was from Off the Vine, and the beer from Astoria Bier & Cheese. I wanted to patronize my neighborhood businesses as much as possible. For more information, head to www.broadwaynosh.com where you can watch the latest episode, check out recipes, read Kirsten’s blog, and sign up for the mailing list. You can also follow them on Twitter (@broadwaynosh) Instagram (broadwaynosh) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/broadwaynosh) Production costs were raised via Kickstarter, through 131 generous backers. If you are interested in advertising on Broadway Nosh or broadwaynosh.com or would like to donate to future episodes contact broadwaynosh@gmail.com Check out her debut solo show at 54 Below on March 6th at 9pm Details available at 54below.com/artist/kirsten-wyatt

32-02 Broadway Astoria, NY 11106 (718) 685-2764

P.S. Pizza Shop In a month so focused on celebrating everything green, we have decided to showcase a brand new neighborhood restaurant focused on helping save the green—and by that, we mean your hardearned cash. Just this last week, the brand new Postscriptum Pizza Shop—or P.S. Pizza—opened its doors for the lunchtime crowd. So of course we had to swing by and check it out. Located smack-dab in the middle of one Astoria’s most bustling avenues, the pizza oven is next door to such favorites as Greenbay Organic Marketplace, the Lockwood Shops, Break Billiards, and Omonia Café—just a block from the train on Broadway. But this is one of the only places in the neighborhood where you can purchase the combo of a soup or salad, a whole personal 12-inch pizza, and a soft drink for just ten bucks. Now we think that’s a fantastic deal. The pizza is prepared to order, and may only be ordered by the whole pie. The crust is exceptionally light, buttery, and one of the thinnest around—yet it miraculously maintains its heat. On the classic pie—the only pie offered as a part of the special— that crust is then topped with fresh mozzarella and sprinkled with garlic, sea salt, and oregano, then spotted with dollops of a tangy marinara before being popped into the oven. On our visit, the service was exceptional. Water (infused with lemon) was served and refilled without request, and we were periodically asked how we enjoyed everything.

44 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2015

Beyond the special, a few small plates and salads are also offered during lunch service. Deviled egg fans should definitely order a plate of their egg-on egg rendition. The yolks are spiced with chipotle, whipped until creamy, and then topped with salmon roe and chives. The full pizza menu is also available, featuring ten additional gourmet pies. There is a noticeable south of the border flare, which we found exciting. Better yet, if you are feeling creative, you can go ahead and build your own masterpiece. The palette of toppings for your palate ranges from chihuahua cheese to gouda, gruyere, and ricotta to charred pineapple, roasted cherry tomatoes, sopressata, tinga chicken, and even herb pesto and truffle oil. Starter offerings run the gamut from apple cider braised pork belly to blackened Nantucket scallops, from lobster rolls to ricotta gnudi with truffle peelings. They also serve an intimate selection of wine and beer. And what meal would be complete without a tart apple tatin or a warm plate of crullers served with chocolate and berry sauce for dunking? From our first ladle of Manhattan clam chowder to the tortilla thin pie and fountain soda, we enjoyed a deliciously affordable midday meal. P.S. We will be returning soon!

FOOD & DRINK

Not Your Average KFC

Yes, it is official. There is a new KFC on Broadway in Astoria. And by KFC, of course we mean Korean Fried Chicken. Specifically, fried chicken wings glazed in spicy Korean garlic sauce. But the fried chicken is such a miniscule part of what is being offered at the new Korean eatery, we focused on a whole selection of other dishes to share. The former 1-800-Flowers shop has now officially blossomed into Mokja. “It’s a friendly way of saying, ‘Let’s Eat’,” explains one server. Mokja is the sister to the more informal takeout restaurant in Manhattan, Korean Express. The new digs offer the opportunity for the chef to expand his menu significantly—and that is precisely what he has done. The menu features well over 50 items, covering the whole spectrum of Korean dishes. It is important to note that there is a definite element of fusion involved in the cuisine at Mokja, ranging from preparation to service. While K-Pop bounces joyously overhead, don’t expect everything to follow tradition. The banchan—or side dishes—have been judiciously edited. A tandem ramekin will arrive at the table holding a delicate stack of kimchi and golden medallions of danmuji—better known as pickled daikon radish. The atypical service, however, is best compared to bread service elsewhere—or chips and salsa. They are intended to simply whet the palate and prepare you for the meal to come. So why not try something small to get the meal started? Like a pile of fries topped with kimchi, gochujang mayo, and cilantro. Or perhaps Mokja’s intensely delicious version of steamed dumplings—or order them fried. In Korean, these little potstickers are called mandoo, and they make them at Mokja from scratch. A generous meatball of minced pork with vegetables and spices is wrapped in a thin pasta skin, pinched together into a half moon, and plopped in the steamer. Guests can order four or nine pieces. Soups and stews are also numerous, and can serve either as a starter or a full meal. One of the most robust versions is their Army Stew—a spicy stew with kimchi, pork, tofu, spam, sausage, rice cakes, and ramen noodles. Other classic dishes include versions of pajeon (scallion pancakes) and ddukboki (spicy rice cakes). And of course they serve a

few tasty versions of bibimbap—the popular egg-topped Korean rice medley—which is even available in a stone bowl.

The barbecue seems to be where the chef shines, and some of the most popular dishes include the kalbi (short ribs), pork bulbogi (thinly shaved marinated pork shoulder), pork belly, and baby back ribs. Fried rice reigns supreme in a variety of combos, as well. But we recommend trying the bulgogi sliders. Bulgogi literally translates to “fire meat” in Korean, and has been ranked as one of the most delicious foods in the world. Prime cuts of beef are thinly sliced and marinated in soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, garlic, pepper, and other ingredients, before being grilled to juicy perfection. If you want to stay on the healthier side, perhaps you should try some of their fantastic japchae. Glass noodles made from sweet potatoes are sautéed with a blend of vegetables and your choice of meat. Hearty mushrooms and sprouts provide contrasting textures, and a scrambled egg is playfully laid across the top. For the time being, desserts are minimal (mochi and crème brulee), and they are still awaiting a liquor license. The minimalistic décor includes several lovingly decorated chalkboard menus—one of which previews coming drinks (including soju), and another which maps out the architecture of a bibimbap burger—which will soon be on the menu in a new burger section. But as for now, the menu is already full of plenty of tasty reasons to swing by and give them a try. Service was exceptionally friendly, and the wait staff is quite knowledgeable. If you are unfamiliar with Korean food, think of a bulgogi slider as a fancy sloppy joe. But if you are already acquainted, then you should definitely give them a shot. They are serving plenty of foods you will have a hard time finding elsewhere in Western Queens. They are open for lunch and dinner, and their lunch special allows you to mix and match dishes for a tasting meal you can only enjoy weekdays between 11:30 and 3:30. 35-19 Broadway, Astoria 11106 (718) 721-0654 MARCH 2015 | BOROMAG.COM | 47

BORO: Where did your love of music come from? Costas Baltazanis: I guess my parents were listening to music all the time when I was a kid. My first [attempt at an] instrument was pretending to play drums on my mother’s pots and pans. By the time I was five, I remember I got a melodica as a present. BORO: When did you start playing guitar? CB: At the age of 10, I visited my friend who’d had a couple of lessons of classical guitar, and I was amazed. I went back to my father and I said to him that’s what I want to do. My audience back then was a couple of relatives and a 60-year-old literature teacher in high school. On the other hand, my friend had a rock band, and his audience was about five hundred students. So, I said to myself, ‘no more classical’, and that was the point where I picked up the electric guitar. I would wake up to go to my friend’s house, play guitar, and then do the same thing after school for hours and hours. By then I was listening a lot to AC/DC, Blue Oyster Cult, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and all these great bands. BORO: Where did you study music, and how did you wind up in the United States?

CB: At the age of eighteen, I left my hometown and I went to Boston to study at Berklee College of music. BORO: What was your time at Berklee like? CB: It was a big shock in the beginning—I was very young—that I successfully survived. Being among people from all these different countries and cultures was the greatest thing that ever happened to me. Studying jazz in the place and country where this music was born was definitely the best thing that I could ever do. BORO: How did you wind up in Astoria? CB: I had a couple of good friends living here, and I always thought that it was one of the best places to live. Somehow Astoria always felt like a very nice neighborhood, and very soon felt like home. Astoria is a place where people say hello, they remember your face, and people are very easy to talk to. BORO: Tell me about End of Seas… CB: End of Seas is my personal debut in the States. A get together of some of the greatest musicians I ever played with. The artistic chemistry is great. Something like getting Miles Davis and Pink Floyd on the same stage. BORO: Where can people see you play live? CB: Every Tuesday at 9 o’clock at the Letlove inn in Astoria, and stay tuned for my CD release party in May.

EXPLORE YOUR BORO

Giving Back and Getting More in Western Queens

Story By Gabrielle C. Sherb

Gabrielle is a fundraising and development professional in Manhattan, keeping her finger on the pulse of philanthropy. Contact her at gabrielle@bigtentphilanthropy.com or on Twitter at @philanthropchic. Since moving to the last stop on the N/Q line almost a decade ago, I’ve benefited from all Astoria has to offer—great neighbors, outstanding cuisine, and an easy commute. The moment the train rises above ground from 59th Street into the open air at Queensboro Plaza I take a deep breath and know I am close to home. While I’ve considered myself an unofficial ambassador of Astoria for years, I felt that I was not as connected to the community as I could be. I wanted to know more about the important work being done every day to make Western Queens the safe, healthy, and vibrant place that I love. That’s why I’m thankful for the opportunity to write for BORO Mag and feature organizations, businesses, and individuals who are making an impact in Astoria, Long Island City, and Sunnyside – and how local residents can give back. The first organization to be featured is the Steinway branch of the Queens Library, located at 31st Street and Ditmars Boulevard. The mission of the Queens Library is to provide for the educational, recreational, informational, and cultural needs of everyone in Queens. Originally founded in 1896, the library now boasts 62 library locations, seven adult learning centers, and one family literary center in the Ravenswood section of Long Island City. “While the number one thing people ask for is books, libraries are becoming [more like] program centers,” says Joanne King, Director of Communications for the Queens Library Foundation. “The libraries’ programs teach people of all ages skills they can take into the classroom and workplace.” Across all its branches, the Queens Library offers children’s story times, after school enrichment, and computer workshops, even classes that provide certificates in coding, web design, and app development. 50 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2015

“Every library in Queens is very community focused,” says King. “We don’t do a cookie cutter approach. We do what the community needs.” The Steinway branch, named in honor of the Steinway family, served as an important resource for the German immigrants and their families that were employed by Steinway Piano Factory. Since its incorporation into the Queens Library system in 1956, the library has continued its tradition of helping those in the Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard vicinity. “The area is growing,” says Laurel Hicklin, Community Library Manager. “We’re seeing lots of new people, more requests for library cards, and as a center for new people moving to the neighborhood. We provide free Wi-Fi and work with the local teenagers. We’re proud to be one of the free resources in the neighborhood.”

NIGHTLIFE & ENTERTAINMENT

Patricia Kenny

Dance Collection

{

{

Presented by Queens Theatre and Patricia Kenny Dance Collection, “Spring Collection 2015” will include a series of virtuosic, innovative, riveting and whimsical dances by Patricia Kenny, Charlotte Griffin, and Katarzyna Skarpetowska. PKDC will be joined by renowned guest dancer and choreographer Miguel Quinones, formally of the Parsons Dance Company. Patricia Kenny took a moment to discuss the upcoming show with BORO.

BORO: It is wonderful that Patricia Kenny Dance Collection focuses on featuring new and emerging choreographers. How did you become connected with Charlotte Griffin and Katarzyna Skarpetowska? Patricia Kenny: Upon the company’s original inception, in 2001, an important part of our mission was to support and encourage emerging choreographers. I choreographed two thirds of the repertory and the rest was to be created by my peers in the field whom I invited to work with the dancers. After the guest artist’s dance was created, I would then continue to direct and rehearse their dance until it was performed. They have all graciously allowed us to keep their work in our current repertory and they will periodically come to work with new dancers that join the group and are new to their work. Along with the aforementioned female choreographers, this season, we are incredibly lucky to have Miguel Quinones, previously of The Parsons Dance Company, perform a solo of his own choreography and be my partner in Kismet. He is possibly the most naturally kinetic male dancer I have ever encountered—a true artist. BORO: I understand that a few of your dancers are from right here in Western Queens. How many of your dancers live in Astoria and Long Island City? PK: Yes, that is true. At the moment, two of the PKDC dancers live in Astoria, however, I lived there for ten years myself while I danced with David Parsons, Kevin O’Day and Christopher D’Amboise

and then began my own group. As a matter of fact, many dancers who have been through my company have lived in Long Island city at some point. In a way, the area has been a haven for artists since the 90’s when NYC rental prices began to skyrocket and freelance performing artists could no longer afford the rents. We all began moving out to Queens or Brooklyn in hopes of finding a safe, convenient, and affordable living situation while working and rehearsing in New York City.

BORO: Your past shows feature such beautiful, emotional dancing that seems to tell such a poignant story. How would you describe the story of the upcoming piece, Kismet? PK: The Turkish word, Kismet, means fate or destiny. This new dance depicts and explores pairings, relationships, and the intense “pull” that can exist between two individuals. There is a developing story line in the dance between two specific people that begins together wrapped within the innocence of young love. As the bond develops and consequently evolves to a darker and more conflicted place, they must separate. The “pull” becomes a pushing away from each other, which necessitates their own individual surrender and subsequent growth in order to learn and recognize their own failings and weaknesses. After some time, they are ready to meet again and rekindle their connection. In the end their beautiful magnetism prevails and they do find their story of “Kismet” and the blessing of love and joy together.

BORO: In three words, how would you describe the choreography of Charlotte Griffin? PK: Bright, earthy, and peaceful BORO: Katarzyna Skarpetowska? PK: Powerful, edgey and musical BORO: Miguel Quinones? PK: Liquid, quick, and brilliant BORO: With the onset of You Tube, and even So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing with the Stars, dance has become more widely enjoyed in the public eye. Do you find audiences to be more educated or enthusiastic than they once were? PK: I do believe that some shows have been more enlightening and helpful in cultivating dance audiences than others. The concept of dance as a fine art that must be viewed in a theater, has certainly become endangered when the general public can consume reality show competitions to fill their dance viewing quotas. I guess it can be difficult to get people to see live performances of any sort in a culture that is learning to turn to the “tube” for entertainment. With everything at our fingertips and usually free, it takes more effort in my opinion than it used to, to bring friends, family and even dance enthusiasts to come to a show. Having said all that, I do believe that live dance will always hold a magical place in theater that cannot be experienced in any other medium. It is the reason I have been dancing my whole life, for that beautiful exchange between dancer and audience member and the privilege to tell a story through movement. BORO: As a dancer, who are some of your greatest influences? PK: Many of my early teachers and mentors from childhood, of course, and coming from a family with Aunts and Uncles who were all singers and self taught musicians. My paternal grandfather was a singer and tap dancer during

prohibition, and often performed in the local speakeasies. He taught me the time step when I was around five years old. My dance style and choreography is greatly influenced by my lifetime involvement in sports. I have always been a runner, and I was recruited to college for women’s lacrosse—and had to choose between dance and lacrosse in my college years. Lastly, my love of music, its emotionality and passion, of course, but even more—the way a dance phrase can manipulate the music is everything to my soul. BORO: For such a physically and mentally demanding skill, where does your mind go to tap into the grace and elegance required? PK: Dance is the union of all those concepts. The grace is in the fusion of physicality, musicality, and story and the artistry that develops over the years through experience in life and experience on the stage. BORO: What will the audience of Kismet be most surprised to see? PK: The use of a wide variety of eastern and western composers and the employment of a hip hop, ballet and modern vocabulary to tell the story of fate.
