STREET STYLE

Color Block

on the Block BY MARIE TORIO @PHOTOSBYMARIETORIO urn in your winter blacks for brighter hues, Astorians, because spring has arrived. Some fashionistas I spotted on the streets of western Queens were ready to take the plunge and try out head-to-toe color blocking, pairing a blue coat with emerald green pants. Others stuck with color on top. Not ready to pack up your neutrals for the season? Try a fun shoe, like a pair of cheetah patterned flats I spotted! No matter how much color locals were incorporating into their outfits, I noticed lots of textured bags and statement sunnies. Take a peek at some of the looks your neighbors rocked this month.

T

Valerie, a stage manager visiting the neighborhood, described her style as “comfy but girly. She paired a floral-print, ruffled, green dress with a two-toned berry bag and white Keds. She topped off her look with purple marble-patterned sunglasses, a velvety, midnight blue scrunchie and a rose gold charm bracelet and watch.

Ella Day, an entertainment and travel business manager/artist, was was enjoying some girl time when I bumped into her. She said her looks are “moody.” I definitely caught on to her moody swag. Her green pants and blue coat were colorful but her booties, shades and bag added a touch of edge to her outfit.

Emily, an adult educator, was heading home after work and ready to relax on a Friday night when I spotted her. She describes her style as “relaxed and earthy,” and she totally nailed that vibe with her loose curls and casually draped, earthtoned scarf. I loved her textured orange sweater peeking through along with her leaf-patterned crossbody bag.

Kim, who works in sales, took a classic black, white and gray outfit to the next level with fun accessories like leopard print flats. She said her style is “easy and comfy with a touch of glam,” which I think is the perfect description. She layered a gold charm bracelet with a gold-andgreen bracelet and added a long necklace to finish off the look.

Kayla (@kaylahedwall) is a fashion designer who was on her day off. She was about to grab a coffee when we met. Her definition of her fashion choices is “classic/’50s with a bit of edge.” Her black skinny jeans paired with her tied top, hoops and shades came together for a perfect ensemble for a laid-back Sunday afternoon. ur local parks and playgrounds are bursting with picnickers, children and pups; restaurant-goers are once again spilling out onto sidewalk cafés and eateries’ backyards; and the ice cream truck is playing its jingle as it drives down the street. MIND + BODY

BELLY DANCING: Good for Brain & Body I

didn’t know what to expect — or what to wear — walking into my first belly dancing class at Sol Dance Center. In my mind, belly dancing involved midriff-baring halters, beaded sashes and dangling earrings. I hoped my leggings, tank top and high pony would cut it. It turned out that the outfits didn’t really matter that night. Some women in the class wore the right accessories, like instructor Debbie Despina Cartsos, who wore a corset-back top and fringed hip scarf from D.Webb Designs, her own dance and streetwear collection. However, most of my classmates were dressed like me. The real focus of the class was to learn how to make the small, concentrated movements with our body to build a foundation to perform a cohesive dance. The class included a mix of people — from their dress, to background and experience, who were all welcoming to newcomers. Both Cartsos and Sol Dance Studio owner Karla Choko said the belly dance community is an inclusive one, for all ages, body types and genders. Students from teens to adults have always been interested in the class, as it involves more “openness” that can feel empowering, Choko said. “It builds confidence,” Choko said. “It’s good for your brain and your body.” Although her studio is known for its Latin classes, like salsa and bachata, Choko, who was born in Mexico, has offered belly dancing since the studio opened 10 years ago, along with almost all styles of dance. Yet belly dancing is as diverse as Queens itself, as the style has touched many parts of the world. The dance style originated in Africa and the Middle East, eventually making its way west, she said. Cartsos, who is Greek, has been teaching at Sol Dance Center for the past five years and now leads the program. She said that growing up, she got hooked on belly dancing watching performers at Greek nightclubs. The Greek style of belly dance, which is called “Tsifteteli,” was mainly brought to Greece by the Asia Minor Greeks during the population exchange with Turkey in the early 1900s, she said, adding that it emphasizes movement of the hips and hands, but has

less rules, allowing dancers to move as they wish to the music. She trained in American Tribal Style, a modern style of dance created by FatChance BellyDance director Carolena Nericcio, and performed with their Manhattan Tribal group for 10 years. She also has a background in the Salimpour method, which began standardizing terminology for the movements in the 1949. “People are usually fascinated by the fact that there are so many different styles of belly dance; for instance, some of the more traditional styles include Egyptian Raqs Sharqi and Shaabi, Turkish Romani, while the newer styles include Tribal, Fusion or American Tribal Style,” Cartsos said. “The one common theme among all the styles is the sense of feeling connected to the earth and allowing the hips to move freely.” As we entered the studio, Cartsos told me she was teaching a fusion-style class. She put on the music, introducing it as an Israeli remix of a Radiohead song. We warmed up by stretching our legs and hips, with some squats, which eased me in. “I can squat. I know the band," I thought, feeling like this was something I M AY 2 0 1 9 I B O R O M A G . C O M

might be able to do, more prepared to roll my belly and whirl around the room. Yet we had to work our way up to that point. Belly dancing is more difficult than the pros make it look, and it takes technique. After warming up, I was surprised when we sat cross-legged, practicing moving one glute at a time, which is used in dance sequences. Belly dancing involves “the isolation of all kinds of situations happening at the same time,” Choka explained. In belly dancing, every movement, be it a small flick of the wrist or turn of one side of the hip, makes an impact; costumes and accessories emphasize the body’s moves and add an element of surprise and allure. The subtleness of the dance allows room for creativity and personal expression within the core movements. While I often go to exercise classes that encourage everything to be tight and exact, it was refreshing when Cartsos encouraged us to be “ooey gooey” with our belly movements.

We learned that the movement of rolling your belly is called an undulation, and dancers do them a few ways: down to up, up to down or side to side. This involves contracting and releasing your abs in a concentrated, intentional way. We practiced these first sitting down, then standing up, moving back and forth across the room. There is also attention to the way the hands move, shimmying and arm posture. We were supposed to keep our arms out to our sides like “eyes,” Cartsos said as she demonstrated with a stage-ready smile — not too stiff but not too bent. As she taught, she made sure students didn’t forget the performance element; Cartsos reminded us of the audience as she moved around the room. By the end, after practicing a few founding techniques, Cartsos demonstrated a dazzling sequence that involved undulations, shimmying, graceful arm sequences and turns set to a sensual beat that finished with an unexpected yet dramatic turn of the head and a flirtatious glance back at the audience. We practiced a few moves at a time, then put them together to a dynamic dance. After the class was over, I found myself taking some of the moves home to my living room. While many, like me, do this for fun, others have formed a belly dancing team that Cartsos trains. The team of five will perform in the school’s annual show Dancesanity Stars on June 22 at Frank Sinatra School of the Arts. This year’s theme is chakras. “We will be dancing to a folkloric fusion choreography with finger cymbals and a fusion number with props,” Cartsos said. And in the spirit of this style of dance she added, “It’s a surprise.” Sol Dance Center offers belly dancing class Monday nights at 7 p.m. The studio also offers a variety of classes from hiphop to salsa to ballet. The first class at the studio is free. For more information, visit soldancecenter.com.

CONCERT FOR EQUALITY

Astoria Choir performs ‘Prayers for Bobby’ this Pride Month BY ALLISON KRIDLE

Every June, New Yorkers celebrate Pride Month with events across the city, including the NYC Pride March, one of the largest pride events in the world. But this year’s Pride Month is especially important, as it marks the 50th anniversary of the historical Stonewall Uprisings that took place in Greenwich Village in 1969.

20

M AY 2 0 1 9

Astoria Choir founder and artistic director Adam Eggleston Fortunately, Astoria won’t be left out of the celebration; the decade-old Astoria Choir is marking this occasion and supporting the queer community in our own borough with the performance of the piece “Prayers for Bobby” on June 8. “When I was planning this season last spring, I realized this June was going to be the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and there was going to be the global pride event going on as well. I felt like it would be an appropriate time to deal with LGBTQ+ issues,” said Astoria Choir founder and artistic director Adam Eggleston. Eggleston decided on “Prayers for Bobby,” a piece based off a true story (and a 1996 book of the same name by Leroy Aarons). The book is about gay teen Bobby Griffith and his mother, Mary Griffith, who both struggled with Bobby’s sexual orientation.

Bobby was taught his whole life through religion and his family that homosexuality was wrong, and the lack of support and acceptance led Bobby to suicide when he was 20 years old. Mary was a devout Christian and churchgoer who did not approve of Bobby’s queerness and thought he could be fixed through prayers. She eventually realized that was not the case. “When I was thinking of pieces that would be appropriate, it was one of the first ones that came to mind, and the more I thought about it, the more it made sense,” Eggleston said. “Plus, the proximity of the composer, he could come up and be a part of the process potentially.” The composer, Jay Kawarsky, is a professor at Eggleston’s alma mater, Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey. Kawarsky wrote the composition shortly after the book was published in the '90s.

“I am a composer and a contemporary music enthusiast, so I am especially thrilled to be performing a concertlength work by a living composer,” said Astoria Choir member Mavis MacNeil. “Often, audiences worry contemporary music might be too weird or alienating, but ‘Prayers for Bobby’ is very musically accessible, which I think is great because its subject matter is so intense and heavy; the contrast between these two components is very effective.” The music tells the story from both the mother’s and the son’s perspectives. “The text of the music is sometimes directly quoting Bobby’s diary or an essay that he wrote while he was still in high school about his feelings, and it also quotes Mary about coming to terms with herself and her beliefs,” Eggleston said. “The book is set up in the same way. It will have a chapter about Bobby and M AY 2 0 1 9 I B O R O M A G . C O M

then one for Mary. It goes back and forth in a non-linear way, where you see how they’re changing throughout the course of their lives and how that culminates to her work as an activist.” The piece delves into how Mary coped with and grappled with her son’s suicide. “‘Prayers for Bobby’ is really about his mother’s transformation in the aftermath of [his suicide] because she had to come to terms with why he would have done this and it forced her to challenge herself to look more deeply into her beliefs and to look more deeply into what her Bible said about homosexuality,” Eggleston said. Mary eventually became an activist and a public figure for gay youth, traveling around the country to talk about the issue of suicide witthin the gay community. She also contributed to the movement of educating children about this issue in school throughout the mid ‘90s. “[I am] thrilled that this concert is happening because it’s great to be participat-

22

M AY 2 0 1 9

ing in the World Pride festival and bringing that into our neighborhood,” MacNeil said. “It is significant for me personally because the world of concert music, like so many other fields, is still predominantly white, male, cisgender and heterosexual, and as a living composer and a queer woman I am proud to be part of an organization that has dedicated an entire concert to LGBT+ issues.” Joining the Astoria Choir for this concert will be two vocal soloists, Elizabeth van Os and Eugene Vargas. Van Os will be singing Mary’s part (soprano) and Vargas will play Bobby (tenor). The narrator, Jana Mestecky, will represent Mary’s voice. Along with the soloists and narrator, the concert will include a chamber orchestra and the entire choir, totaling 100 performers. “When the ‘Prayers for Bobby’ piece was written about 25 years ago there was a statistic that one in three suicides among young people were attributable

to issues of sexual identity, and that hasn’t changed much,” Eggleston said. “That’s the entire point of Mary’s activism. [She] got to the point where she realized her own faults in what happened to her son and also came to realize there must be so many others who are out there and feel like they have nobody to turn to and are contemplating ending it all. Her personal mission became, ‘How can I reach those people?’ and try to tell them they are worthy of love.” All audience members, regardless of sexual orientation or background, can take away the valuable and pertinent message in “Prayers for Bobby.” The concert will be held from 8 to 9 p.m. on June 8 at the Trinity Lutheran Church on 37th Street and 31st Avenue. “The piece in the end has a very hopeful and uplifting message which is that you are loved; you are valued; you are a part of something bigger than you understand,” Eggleston said.

Barbecue in a Beer Garden BY DANIEL GROGAN

W

hen it was announced in 2018 that Studio Square, south Astoria’s answer to the historic Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden, would be permanently shutting its doors, the collective wails from day drinkers could be heard from Socrates Sculpture Park to Steinway Street. For years, the beautiful beer garden had been a premier destination for people looking to enjoy a pitcher on a sunny Saturday or watch the World Cup on a massive screen with hundreds of Croatia fans. Needless to say, the closure came as quite a disappointment. So, when Pig Beach, already a popular restaurant and bar in Brooklyn, made it clear that they planned on stepping in and resurrecting the space as their second location, Astoria let out a sigh of relief. “The preexisting space of Studio Square is an incredible model of what we do at Pig Beach Brooklyn but on a larger scale,” explained Matt Abdoo, the executive chef and creative force behind Pig Beach. “We are huge fans of the inside/outside beer garden style model that can both cater to

30

M AY 2 0 1 9

the smaller parties while at the same time accommodate large groups.” Along with his partners Rob Shawger, Shane McBride, Dennis Lu and Gary M. Kravetz, Abdoo opened the first location in 2016 after a successful stint as a summer pop-up the year prior. Pig Beach quickly became a big Brooklyn hit,

offering up award-winning barbecue in a unique outdoor setting. The concept was simple: “We just wanted to create an atmosphere that was warm, inviting and relaxed that also served incredible barbecue and drinks,” Abdoo said. And it is this perfectly executed vision that Abdoo and his team

are currently working so hard to bring to Astoria, with the goal of opening in the late fall of this year. The food is what Abdoo describes as “delicious, fun and playful barbecue with many regional influences,” and the recipes were carefully developed over several years. “We took our favorite barbecue from our favorite regions and put our NYC twist on it,” Abdoo said. “We also took

32

M AY 2 0 1 9

much inspiration from our culinary backgrounds and applied flavors and ingredients that we love to cook with and eat ... Our baby back ribs, brisket and burger are always our top sellers. Our guests also love our mac ’n’ cheese topped with toasted goldfish crackers.” In fact, Pig Beach’s burger has received a number of accolades, including Eater’s 2016 “Best Burger” award as well as second place in the 2016 New York City Wine & Food Festival’s Burger Bash. The high-quality food is something that Pig Beach is bringing to the space that was previously absent. Now, the killer grub will be just as big of a draw to the Astoria beer garden as the open-air atmosphere. The food is not the only thing that Abdoo and the Pig Beach team hope to improve upon in occupying the space. Studio Square often received criticism from neighbors and community members because of the noise pollution that would occur on busy days or during events.

Addressing these concerns, Abdoo explained, “We have every intention of being a good neighbor. Our vision, style of service and business model are very different from Studio Square, and that in itself will greatly reduce the noise pollution. We are a lifestyle establishment where our guests want to hear the music but more so want to hear each other. Limiters will be applied to all our speakers to prevent excessive sound as well.” While Abdoo will take care to ensure that the partying never becomes a problem for the neighbors, they still plan on showing customers a good time. “We plan to host events in LIC similar to those which currently take place in our Brooklyn location,” Abdoo said. “Those will include guest pit masters, guest chefs, culinary collabs, charity fundraisers, weddings, rehearsal dinners, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, birthdays as well as any other celebrations or occasions our guests would like to share with us.”

Above all, Abdoo explained that he wants to provide Astorians with an environment that is “fun, welcoming, delicious, relaxed and enjoyable.” “We hope to create a place where families with children, professionals of all ages, foodies and all walks of life can come together to enjoy some delicious barbecue, craft cocktails, local beers and drinks,” he added. Abdoo ended by mentioning what I can assume will be one of Pig Beach’s biggest draws: “Pets are also welcome.”

Peace and CAFFEINE BY ALLISON KRIDLE

If you feel crazed and overwhelmed by New York City’s 24/7 bustle, you might be searching for a peaceful place to take a deep breath and relax here in western Queens. I recently found a spot to unwind in Sunnyside’s newly opened business called Chakra Cafe, located on Queens Boulevard.

C

hakra Cafe owner Ahmet Albayrak and manager Daria Kostyshkina started working together two years ago at Albayrak’s other cafe, Cute Cat Cafe in Ridgewood, Queens. Albayrak recruited Kostyshkina to help him run Chakra Cafe, which opened in March. While Albayrak is from Turkey and Kostyshkina is from Russia, they both found their home in Queens.

36

M AY 2 0 1 9

“Ahmet did a good job searching for areas to open Chakra and there a lot of Turkish people in Sunnyside, so he can speak easily with people in the community and it’s close to Manhattan,” Kostyshinka said. “Sunnyside is a community that we are happy to be a part of.” Chakra Cafe certainly stands out in Sunnyside. It feels like an oasis, starting with the light teal sign and entryway and the

lotus flower logo. Albayrak wisely chose to add little hints of nature on the inside by hanging pots of flowers on the walls and using round, wooden tables that look like they came straight from tree trunks. “After [opening my] Ridgewood location, I started looking for another spot. I waited for the Chakra spot for one year. Finally I bought the [former YogurBerry] and created Chakra,” Albayrak said. “It took time, energy but it was worth it. Every single item in Chakra, I spent hours [on], from lamps to tables. Finally here we are.” Anyone who walks into Chakra Cafe can automatically tell that it is a space for relaxation and a place to reset mentally. It is decorated like a home, filled with tinted glass hanging lights, neutral colors and comfortable pillows that rest on the booth seats. “‘Chakra' is [an] energy section in body, so we tried to make [the cafe] harmonious. A place where people can stay

and get a mental rest. Listen to music with friendly people around,” Kostyshkina said. The atmosphere in Chakra feels like a spiritual getaway and fits well into Sunnyside, since locals and those who frequent the area come from all walks of life, hail from various places and practice many different cultures. “I feel at home. First week, I was surprised. A lot of people came and said welcome,” Albayrak said. “That part was amazing and it helped us to be motivated quickly.” Albayrak has enjoyed getting to know his new customers over the past month and said that some people have become regulars very quickly. “[My] favorite part is sitting with people I just met and talk about almost everything. Very liberal and modern people. Friendly and welcoming,” Albayrak said. “We have regular customers already, coming in every day and getting their usuals, like we have been

there for years and it has been just one month. Synergy. That was what we were looking [for] and we got it.” Not only does the energy of Chakra add and fit into Sunnyside, but their menu brings something unlike any other cafe in the area while also remaining familiar. I indulged in Chakra’s iced oat latte, which was better than the lattes I usually find in the city, and baklava, which was nothing less than superb. Chakra Cafe’s menu contains anything you could ever want for breakfast, such as various types of omelettes and waffles (even Nutella) and six different types of bagels. Their coffee selection takes over half of their menu and includes standard drinks like drip, espresso, lattes and cappuccinos, but Chakra also offers specialty drinks like golden and matcha lattes, as well as a signature Turkish blend. “It’s a good place for people to stay for bagels, and there are not many options for breakfast around so we provide op-

tions. Also a lot of coffee, Kostyshkina said. The lunch menu overflows with items for vegan and vegetarians. They have creative light bites like leafy and filling salads and sandwiches packed with veggies, plus meat options like salmon, turkey and chicken. In addition to providing many more feasting options for the neighborhood and caffeine for a lifetime, Albayrak successfully created a cozy space for western Queens residents to rest and unwind. It is a space for comfort, community and harmony. It truly feels like a home away from home.

Try classic Indian dish from Astoria’s Kurry Qulture at The World’s Fare Astoria resident Sonny Solomon brought Queens’ first upscale Indian restaurant to his neighborhood when he opened Kurry Qulture on 30th Avenue in 2015. Solomon hails from the North Indian state of Punjab, as does the restaurant’s chef, Binder Saini. This month, they will be showcasing a classic Indian street food from that region — samosa chaat — at The World’s Fare. While it’s tempting to think of samosa chaat as an Indian version of loaded nachos, it’s really its own thing. The fried vegetable turnovers, packed with potato and peas, are seasoned with whole cumin and coriander, topped with chickpeas, onion, and tomato, and then drizzled with a trio of sauces: mint and tamarind chutneys and a spicy yogurt. Finally, the whole lot is showered with crunchy bits of sev, a chickpea noodle. The resulting explosion of textures and flavors — cool, crunchy, spicy, sweet, sour, and minty — is as exciting as the diverse food scene of Queens itself. “It’s a very, very popular street food in North India, but now it’s all over India,” Solomon said. “People love it!”

@KATRINAMEDOFF @KATYA_M22 inescapable. My favorite moments always involve entering a shop and unexpectedly stumbling upon pieces that make my eyes dance. It’s so wonderful living in a place that is drenched in various types of artwork. BORO: What excites you most about being part of The World's Fare Shopping Pavilion? KB: I am most excited to vend alongside the incredible participants at The World’s Fare! I’m particularly ecstatic to be immersed in the food, music, artwork, fashion and mostly the people! I love interacting and meeting new people, especially in an event as culturally and artistically diverse as this. Excited is an understatement.

BORO: Anything else you'd like to add? KB: Creating is the backbone of this life, whether you’re making art, music, food, dancing, etc. — do it. Do it with intention and do it with love. Surround yourself with those who uplift you. On that note, I want to thank my beautiful best friend, my firecracker of a fiancé and my family for making my time at The World’s Fare a reality.

f you’re headed to The World’s Fare at Citi Field on May 18 or 19, keep an eye out for Astoria resident Kerri Boccard of Kurrabee Art; she’ll be selling her vibrant artwork at the shopping pavilion. We chatted with her about her inspiration, the Astoria arts community and the upcoming World’s Fare: BORO: How long have you lived in Astoria? Kerri Boccard: I am new to Astoria! I moved to my beautiful little Ditmars apartment in October 2018 after living in Florence, Italy, for a year with my fiancé. Seven months in Astoria and I continue to fall in love with it more each day. BORO: Tell us about your artwork. KB: My artwork is personal, yet relatable with a main focus on florals and females. My pieces are often vibrant and whimsical often peppered with a dark twist, allowing onlookers their own interpretation. BORO: What inspires your art? KB: My artwork is truly inspired by myself — amplified emotions, personal experiences and all. I think it is important to realize you can be your own inspiration, your own muse. Painting for me is self-love. It’s a release to place the thoughts from my head onto the tip of a paint brush. For this reason I refer to my artwork as “Brain Flowers” — the thoughts come, grow in my mind and bloom onto canvas. BORO: What do you think of the Astoria arts community? KB: The Astoria arts community is fantastic. From the street art, to the studios and local vendors displaying local artists — it is

lexa Strautmanis and Chris Supino have built their perfect version of home on 28th Street in Astoria filled with meaningful art, plants and hidden trinkets that highlight the couple’s playful lifestyle. But they didn’t get here by following trends or "KonMari-ing" their space; they let their unique interests lead the way. Both Strautmanis and Supino grew up in Manhattan: SoHo and the Upper West Side respectively,

but they have lived in Queens for three years. “There’s a sense of community in Astoria,” said Strautmanis, an artist who works in development at Cambridge in America. “We know all of our neighbors. We know the businesses. We just love it here.” High ceilings were also a priority for the couple when they were apartment hunting, and after walking into their living room, I understand why. A massive, colorful painting is the focal point of the

room, bursting with oranges, yellows and blues, almost Rothko-esque in design. But this piece is completely unique, painted by Strautmanis' grandfather, Edvins Strautmanis (edvinsstrautmanisart.com). It sits behind a low, cream couch that was custom-made, but not for them. “I saw it on Craigslist,” Strautmanis said. “It originally was a custom-built couch for the person who purchased it. I think it was $2,000, or something insane. But I want people to know that you don’t need to have a lot of money to have nice things. In New York City, people are affluent and they get rid of stuff because it’s easier than selling it.” Their “Mad Men” bar on the opposite corner of the room was another Craigslist find, and

originally a desk. The artwork is either their own or gifts. One of the few pieces newly bought is the corner TV stand. The sides are slanted to perfectly nudge into the corner of the room – a difficult find. “We tried to disguise the TV by putting big art around it to make it seem like it’s not just a big black square,” Strautmanis said. “I love television. I wanted a very television-focused room. I’m not shy about like, I love to bingewatch and watch movies, but when you walk in the room, it’s not about the TV.” It’s framed by a “Pacific Rim” poster and a Japanese-style print, a gift from Supino’s mom. “He [Supino] has great taste in pieces,” Strautmanis said. “He gave me lay of the land

in terms of what I wanted to do. He was like, ‘Just give me plants!’ But he takes good care of really nice pieces.” “I care about it,” Supino said, “I just don’t have an eye for this. But individual pieces I’m good at. I like plants, Japanese stuff and video game stuff.” Supino currently works in video games, and Japan has special meaning to them as the first trip they took as a couple. The wooden West Elm coffee table was also picked out by Supino. “That’s the one that everyone has,” he admitted, “but this turns into a table, so you don’t need a dining room table, so I really like furniture that’s multi-purpose in that way.” Like so many city-dwellers, the couple

used small-space hacks like this to take advantage of real estate. They hung shelves up high over the living room entryway to elevate the walls, and placed a large mirrored closet in the hallway to expand the longest part of their apartment. There’s a nook off the living room which doubles as a workspace and extra seating area. It’s bathed in natural light most of the day and is full of plants. Plants are everywhere. But it’s done in a way that livens the space and doesn’t make you feel like you’re walking into a greenhouse. “They liven every room,” Strautmanis said. “The plant will let you know if they are thirsty; they’re not shy about if they’re dying or not.”

There are hanging plants in corners of the living room and nook, cascading off shelves and perched on windowsills, and even in the shower! Their bedroom evokes a true sense of calm. The bedding is neutral, earthy tones and a hand-woven piece hangs above the bed. Another of Strautmanis' grandfather’s paintings hangs on one wall – it’s the brightest thing in the room, but not overpowering. Some of Strautmanis' own work is displayed, too, the largest of which is a nude on paper that hangs in the bathroom (“The bathroom is always the place for nudes, I think,” she said). The second largest of her grandfather’s paintings hangs behind the table in their kitchen, this one smatters of green, gray, white and orange, which they’ve perfectly matched with floral placemats and a vase of wildflowers. Next to the table is a whole bookshelf of cookbooks, a passion of Supino’s. Their fridge faces away from their slim kitchen for easy access, but also allows them to display magnets and prints from their travels. “This is what I want people to know,” Strautmanis said. “There’s a lot of color. There’s a lot going on. There’s something on every wall, but it doesn’t have to feel empty to be a cool space. More is more. This Marie Kondo wave is sweeping the nation, and you know what’s boring? Minimalism and throwing all your stuff away. More is more.” They want their space to be fun, like them. There are little toys hidden throughout their apartment that I would never have found on my own: a little pink bunny on the ledge above their bedroom doorway, a pterodactyl hanging from a woven tapestry, a batman figurine

doing a perfect “warrior two” in the bathroom, a dinosaur with a phone booth on top of the fridge, and so much more. “Make it fun!” Strautmanis said. “We have a lot of games around; it can be fun. It can be fun to be funny.” She’s hoping to help others do the same. “We pay so much for rent. You spend a third of your life asleep in a place; it should be good,” Strautmanis said. “I consult my friends on their apartments, I’ll see a space and I’ll get it.” She just started an Instagram account, @alexafixmyapt, to bring this vision to light. “People can decorate without having a lot of money; it’s just thoughtful space design,” she said. “Right now it’s just for fun, but maybe one day [I'll turn it into a business]. Just to get good furniture out of rich people’s houses and into people’s apartments who can’t afford it. Like the Robin Hood of interior design!” M AY 2 0 1 9 I B O R O M A G . C O M
