STREET STYLE

Corey (@coreypparis) was visiting from Connecticut and had just eaten brunch at Queens Comfort. He is a fundraiser development director and considers his style to be “clean and preppy.” His sleek navy coat, striped scarf, leather gloves and Ray-Ban Clubmaster shades gave his look that preppy flair he’s talking about.

Stylin’ Scarves

Writer and filmmaker Carolynn (@carolynncecilia) was on her way to a class at Orange Theory when I spotted her. She described her style as “intellectual menswear and rock ’n' roll.” I love how she paired her leggings with high socks and wellies along with her grey peacoat and colorblocked chunky scarf.

estern Queens doesn't slow down with chilly weather; Astorians are always keeping busy with workouts, classes, brunch and more. And they do it in style — usually with an eye-catching scarf! Whether they donned stripes, plaid, color blocks or fringe, locals were warming up in style. Add in some accessories like retro earmuffs, statement earrings or boots with a funky toe, and you’ve got a great late-winter look.

Research analyst Clarissa (@clarissa.riv) was on her way to brunch when I saw her. She said her style is “minimal,” and I definitely agree. Her look was on the dark-toned side but she added the perfect pieces to compose her ensemble like a high bun, drop earrings and black backpack. It was very minimal but stylish enough to pack a punch.

Hairstylist Catherine (@caotreilly) was on her way to brunch at Sweet Afton with her friend. She refers to her style as “cute and casual.” First, let’s just take a moment to appreciate her gorgeous hair. As for her outfit, she layered a green utility jacket over a long cardigan, paired with an oversize, soft, white fringed scarf. She paired classic pieces like sunnies and a black bag with light, ripped jeans and boots with a unique toe.

Astorian Beth (@bethypetes) was on her way to yoga when I spotted her cute earmuffs. She said her fashion sense is “boho-comfy.” Her belted coat, quilted handbag with a chain handle, colorful pashmina and earmuffs came together in a very bohemian way.

t’s been a winter of highs and lows, with single-digit cold fronts and unexpectedly warm days. We asked our readers to tag us in their Instagrams of how they’ve been spending their winter here in Astoria, Long Island City and Sunnyside. One reader warmed up with a hot drink at Astoria Coffee, while many others braved the cold. Whether they were exploring a wintery Socrates Sculpture Park, doing a handstand on the streets of LIC or playing outside with a sibling or pet, western Queens residents didn’t let the snow stop them from having fun. LOCAL LOVE Old World Meets New

at Irish Pubs Across Astoria BY CLAIRE LEADEN

@CLAIRELEADEN

I

t’s that time of year — when Americans fully embrace their Irish roots, no matter how small of a percentage. But whatever your heritage, if you want to travel to Ireland for St. Patrick’s Day this year without the cost of a plane ticket, Astoria is the place to be. Traditional pubs that have been in the neighborhood for ages are crossing paths with more modern bars opened by the next generation of young Irish owners. The neighborhood offers

@CLAIRELEADEN

classics like the best pour of Guinness in New York, to the brand-new Frozen Irish Coffee — and everything in between. Like most Irish immigrant history in America, the Great Famine — when the entire potato crop in Ireland (the main part of their diet) was completely destroyed by disease — is also what led many Irish people to escape to New York City. In the beginning of the 20th century, immigrants began moving out of Manhattan for a better quality of life. Cheaper

and more stable apartments, an extended subway to Queens, and more job opportunities brought the Irish to Astoria. You can see the influence in the neighborhood — perhaps now almost as much as the first influx. Irish pubs have always been a staple, but more and more have been opening as a population of young Irish increases, who pay homage to their heritage while also taking it up a notch for the next generation. A quick Yelp search places over 20 in the area, at the least.

Cronin and Phelan’s Cronin and Phelan’s, off Broadway between Steinway and 38th Street, may remind visitors of a traditional Irish pub from back in the day — and that’s because it is one. It opened in 1960, and the current owner Michael Peacock, a fellow Irishman from Laois County, took it over in 1990 from the restaurant’s namesakes. It always had a good reputation for the neighborhood, bartender Louise Egleston said, so Peacock kept the name, but he decided to bring classic Irish food to the table since it was previously just a bar.

“He pretty much transformed everything,” she said. “He put in the whole dining area. It went from just sandwiches to an extensive menu.” That menu includes classics like shepherd's pie, fish and chips, chicken curry and bangers and mash. The shepherd's pie and potato salad recipes come directly from Peacock’s mother, Nan. They also bake fresh Irish soda bread every day and have rotating specials — like corned beef and cabbage on Thursdays, beef stew on Tuesdays and cottage pie on Wednesdays, which Egleston said draws regulars for those specific dishes. For libations, the traditional Guinness and also Smithwick’s are on tap, and they also do a luscious Irish coffee with fresh cream as well as hot toddies. “Most of the regulars have been drinking here for 20 years … it’s that kind of bar,” Egleston said. “It has a really good name, especially for the food … people always come in for the food.” With more Irish living in Astoria and therefore more pubs popping up, Egleston said it makes for a community feel. “A lot of neighborhood Irish bartenders come in for food … they get their comfort food and feel like they’re home,” she said. “We’re all friendly with each other and it’s really nice to have, especially when you’re so far from home.”

The Quays Not quite as old but with the same friendly, Irish charm is neighborhood pub The Quays, on the corner of 45th Street and 30th Avenue. It’s been open for 13 years, but the building has always been a bar. Current owner Dee Flattery took it over seven years ago after working there for six years prior, and it attracts a mix of customers: Irish, Croatian and Italian alike, representing Queens diversity. On a Sunday afternoon, regular Christopher Mulqueen said you can find “someone watching soccer, someone watching Gaelic football, someone watching hockey … Everyone gets along and treats each other kindly. I live next door and I can honestly come here and anyone would give the dollar out of their pocket to help me out.” Flattery is a staple in the neighborhood, and customers are likely to be found calling her “Sister Dee” or “Mama Dee.” “She is a gem,” Mulgreen said. “That’s the best way I could put it.” Locals also assert that she pours the best pint of Guinness in NYC — and it’s a full 20 oz., rather than the typical 12 oz. pour. It’s a great pour for a combination of reasons: the keg “lines” are cleaned one to two times a week, she starts with a completely dry glass, and she lets it settle in between pouring. Guinness is their bestseller. Hospitality is important to Flattery, who is from Roscommon County in Ireland. “I want them to feel comfortable,” she said of her patrons. “I want it to be a place where women, or men, feel comfortable coming and sitting down. Especially women … I don’t want them to feel like they’re going to be hit on just because they’re sitting by themselves. Everybody should be welcomed.” The name of the pub refers to a wharf where ships dock, and there is a Quays bar in almost every country in Ireland, Flattery said. “It’s like home,” regular Sandra Mattessich said. “It really is a family,” Mulgreen added. “If you come in here and are respectful and nice, you will fit right in.”

memorate the Irish uprising against England, and celebrates Arthur’s Day in September, the birthdate of the founder of Guinness. They also started an Irish football team (a traditional Irish sport that’s a combination of soccer and rugby) with the New York Gaelic Athletic Association, and represent Astoria all summer long when they play in Gaelic Park in the Bronx. “Astoria became booming with the young Irish [a few years ago],” co-owner Rory Murphy said of opening the space, “so it happened to be really great timing.”

Joseph Byrne, co-owner of The Wolfhound off 30th Avenue, bartended at The Quays until he opened his bar with three other partners in 2016. “We’re a modern Irish neighborhood bar,” Byrne said. “We’re trying to create a traditional pub atmosphere but still be contemporary to Astoria, but not closed off.” More contemporary elements include jazz on Tuesdays, trivia on Wednesdays, happy hour, a cocktail menu with winter drinks like Cadbury hot chocolate and a honey hot toddy, and local beers on tap in addition to the usual Guinness. Since the owners, all Irishmen under 35 that have worked in the neighborhood, are musicians, live music is an important aspect of the bar’s feel. There is live music on Sunday and Monday nights, and they just hosted their nowannual “Trad Week” where they bring over musicians from Ireland and celebrate eight straight nights of traditional Irish music performances. The Wolfhound will host more musical events St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The bar also taps into their more traditional roots with a historical photo exhibition on Easter weekend, to com-

Passage, a block up from The Wolfhound, is also doing a new slant on the conventional Irish pub. The owners, who own Banter in Forest Hills as well, wanted the same thing for both places: to offer classic Irish cuisine and drinks but with a cool twist. “We’re not really a traditional Irish bar, but you don’t want to lose the essence of the Irish pub,” explained partner Michael Mansfield. “So no matter where you go, as long as you have the same heart of the place, I think that’s what counts.” They offer 138 Irish whiskeys — the most in New York City — and do a traditional “Sunday Roast,” which includes a different meat each week, cooked to perfection, alongside potatoes and veggies. The rest of their menu definitely puts a twist on traditional Irish fare with Irish breakfast flatbread, baked Guinness mac and cheese, Jameson spring rolls, and Dubliner cheese sticks. These options are available alongside traditional stews and curries, and some more American takes like burgers. The cocktails also offer a new spin, with their famous frozen Irish coffee, Irish mules and whiskey apple cider. In another more modern move, Passage is very active on social media. Mansfield says they try to make their Irish comfort food “Instagrammable,” and of course, delicious. “If it looks good but doesn't taste good, it doesn't work,” he said. “So it’s got to be both.”

ON DITMARS CATERS TO BRIDES, CELEBS AND LOCALS Native New Yorker Angela Calisti opened Beauty Social Salon in 2014 “after falling in love with our location on a quiet corner in Astoria,” she said. “Fast forward five years and our neighborhood locals have become like family.” That family feel is one of the cornerstones of Calisti’s business. “One thing I have always loved about doing hair is the connections I make with my clients, so it was important to me to make sure my salon reflected that as well,” she said. "As a result, Beauty Social does not feel like your typical salon — once you walk in the door you feel like you are hanging out with a group of your best friends. We work hard to keep the space feeling cool, comfortable and inviting for everyone.” The salon offers a variety of services, including doing the best color in town. “We offer our clients a range of services from your basic cuts and blowouts to dramatic color transformations, dry cutting and seamless hair extensions,” Calisti said. “I have an extensive background in bridal so Beauty Social offers premiere bridal beauty services as well. We also host private client events for groups celebrating bachelor parties, birthday parties, or just a girls’ night out.” Calisti has worked on everything from fashion campaigns to TV shows in her career, and she specializes in getting celebrities ready for events like fashion week, red carpets and movie premieres. “I think the fact that I am able to have an an incredible celebrity client list (Olivia Culpo, Olivia Palermo, Jenna Ortega, Bella Thorne, Sofia Richie, Amanda Steele, Gigi Gorgeous, to name a few) as well as a successful salon with my local clients is a dream come true and something I am extremely proud of,” Calisti said.

EXPLORE YOUR BORO

Astoria’s in Business BY DANIELLE BRODY @DLB1022

Four women in Astoria are turning their passions into new businesses with support from the local community — and often the online community as well. All of these entrepreneurs found a way to tie their roots and personalities into their thoughtful and beautiful products, from pastries to candles. They’ve all loved launching their businesses in the close-knit western Queens community, and they have big ambitions for their projects’ next steps. Find out more about these up-andcomers, and make sure to follow them on social media so you can watch them grow.

Simply Sunday Candles Demetra Metropoulos, an Astoria native, grew up spending cozy Sundays with her family, making dinner and relaxing. She’s (hand) pouring that feeling into a product: Simply Sunday Candles. The graphic design student at Queens College has also always loved candles — the way they look, their fragrance and the feelings they invoke. She realized even the most high-end candles are not that healthy for consumers or for the environment. They often have added chemicals, and when a candle burns to the end and turns black, that soot is unhealthy to inhale.

20

MARCH 2019

Since natural candles are hard to find, “I’ve always wanted to start something of my own and make it different,” Metropoulos said. Her candles stand out because they are hand-poured and are vegan, made with soy wax and no added chemicals or dyes. They also have a wooden wick, as opposed to a cotton wick, which make the candles burn longer and cleaner than traditional ones. Plus, the wooden wicks make a pleasing, subtle crackling sound. Simply Sunday Candles also don’t smoke when they've finished burning. Metropoulos spent January doing research, testing and mixing candles and scents in her kitchen to create the five variations she offers now. These include “Awaken,” “Cozy Nights,” “Relaxation,” “Comfort” and “Endless Love,” featuring combinations of fragrances such as amber and mandarin or sea salt, jasmine and orchid flowers. She launched her website in February, where she sells the candles for $19 each and ships them out herself. The candles’ labels provide another personal touch — they feature the business’s name in her own handwriting, as well as a warm description of the scent. The candles have a rose gold lid and are designed to enhance room décor with a homey feel. For now, she is mostly selling to friends and family and sharing the product with influencers on Instagram, many of whom have reached out. She looks forward to growing the brand with popups in local Astoria shops and expanding her product, especially for the holidays. “There are so many scents,” she said.

Mardhory Cepeda is offering Astorians a slice of sweetness from Brazil. The baker, who studied at culinary school in Brazil, has a ton of experience in the food industry: she worked in restaurants, catering and fine dining for about 10 years in both NYC and in her native country. Now, she’s starting something of her own while staying true to her roots with Kouklet, which to her means “to share love through food.” “I just felt it was time to share things that truly came from the heart,” said Cepeda, who owned a small cake shop in Brazil. Kouklet offers cake rolls, inspired by a Brazilian pastry called “Bolo de Rolo.” Traditionally, they are filled with guava and served with sharp cheese on top, but she has expanded to include a large variety including matcha, strawberry, passion fruit

and chai-spiced chocolate. The fruity flavors fill layers of thin cake, and customers say they enjoy the tasty balance, she said. From her experience at farm-to-table restaurants, she has learned to procure the “freshest local ingredients possible.” Recently, she added a vegan and gluten-free “Everyday Cake” to her menu, based on customer demand. “People comment on how spongey and comforting it tastes,” she said. “They are surprised at the depth of chocolate in the chocolate cake, and the bright orange taste of the orange cake.” Although Cepeda is from Brazil, her new community of Astoria inspires and embraces her business. The neighborhood, which she calls a “melting pot,” welcomes new types of food because it’s so open-minded, she said. Her husband and family, including her parents and younger sisters, help with the business, and she bakes out of a communal kitchen space in Long Island City, Entrepreneur Space. You can order the cakes online and find them in seasonal popups. She hopes to open her own cafe in the future with “Brazilian-style pastries, delicious coffee and communal vibes.”

As a bride-to-be, Caitlin Wunsch will only design wedding invitation she could see herself using. “My one true rule is to design and share only the things I would purchase myself,” Wunsch said. “Cathouse Invitations is my passion project and I, selfishly, want to be proud of the products I create.” Wunsch, who has a background in environmental science and geographic information systems environmental scientist, is a self-taught graphic designer. She has worked on freelance marketing projects and runs an Etsy shop selling family portrait illustrations and vector art during the holiday season. A few years ago, she created a logo for a fake brewery called Cathouse just for her portfolio. When she had the urge to create something new, it led to starting the custom stationery company, and luckily, she already had a name and logo ready. Wunsch creates custom and semi-custom wedding invitation packages and other wedding stationery items such as menus, table numbers, itineraries, ceremony programs, location maps and couple illustration portraits. Her process starts by listening to the customers’ needs and expectations, which she calls her strength, to create their dream invitation. She sketches out her designs, then transposes them into digital form using Adobe Illustrator. She also uses a die-cutting machine to shape her designs and adds paper embossing to add text or an image mold. Wunsch’s plan is to build the brand into a product line of invitations that would be marketed to friends and locals on Instagram. She said through social media, she has found a group of people who act as a source of ideas and support. The creative and ambitious people in Astoria have also inspired Wunsch. “That diversity has inspired a sense of self-love and self-confidence to really be what I want to be,” she said. She said she is working her “butt off” to launch her online shop featuring custom and semi-custom invitations suites and stationery add-ons. As demand rises and new products are added, she plans to open a local office space in Astoria where customers can visit and watch the design and product development process unfold.

Bench Flour Bakers Bench Flour is a nod to Christine Yen’s professional pastry background and her dedication to making everything from scratch — the expression refers to gently tossed flour on a work surface, also known as a bench. She has worked at top New York City bakeries, most recently at Balthazar Bakery. While she was working as head baker at another New York City bakery, Baked, in 2017, she started her own business on the side. The products first sold to the public at the LIC Flea & Food market that summer. Her philosophy is to “create honest, fresh, and just really good food.” The menu changes frequently based on the season and inspiration she gets from ingredients she finds locally and at the farmers market. “This allows for the need for constant creativity, which is a cornerstone of this industry and it’s honestly where all the fun lies,” she said. The cream pie is one dessert that works every season, she said. It has a flaky pie dough base, vanilla bean pastry cream

and seasonal fruit preserves topped with whipped cream. Another favorite is the Chinese sweet red bean cream pie. Yen grew up cooking with Chinese food with her grandmother. Yen has a partnership with The Breakfast Shack, providing pastries that complement owner Joe DeMato’s savory offerings. “We inspire and bounce ideas off each other, which is incredibly fun and part of why we do what we do," she said. "We are so in sync with the way we think and create, a partnership allows us to constantly make new and delicious meals as a collaboration.” Aside from the 30th Avenue food truck, you can find Bench Flour pastries at Dawa’s in Sunnyside and local markets like the monthly Queens Craft Brigade. Yen also does cake and pastry custom orders. The business currently operates out of commercial kitchen in LIC, but a storefront in Astoria is underway and expected to open mid-year. She wasn’t ready to disclose the location just yet, so stay tuned.

A WORLD OF FILM More than 200 films will screen in Astoria during the Queens World Film Festival this month BY STEPHEN LEPORE

A

little bit of Hollywood is headed for Astoria as the Queens World Film Festival returns in late March. This year’s festival — the ninth annual — takes place from March 21 to 31 and will screen over 200 films from 31 countries, including 16 that are world premieres. Artistic director Don Cato highlights issues of inclusion and local flavor in this year’s lineup.

32

MARCH 2019

“There are films from four of our great boroughs and a groundbreaking 79 films by women,” he said. “We are also screening 14 LGBTQ-themed films and 15 films by Asian filmmakers and six films by kids, for kids — we literally have something for everyone.” Opening night is Thursday, March 21, at the Museum of the Moving Image. The program will be a collection of seven

short films under the title “Worldly Vision.” They include “Marguerite,” which was nominated at this year’s Academy Awards for Best Live Action Short. While every night features something special, the standouts are often the “Spirit of Queens” honorees. Nancy Kelly and her partner Kenji Yamamoto will be celebrated for their 1991 film “Thousand Pieces of Gold” on Tuesday, March 26. The film,

which stars Chris Cooper among others, will be presented in a restored 4K format. Former Chief Curator at MoMI David Schwartz will also be feted during the festival and will screen the 1992 Sundance winner “In the Soup” at the museum on Thursday, March 28, to help celebrate. Post-screening, there will be a Q&A with the filmmaker Alexandre Rockwell. The festival closes on March 31, with the annual “Best of” Awards. They’ll be presented in categories including Best Feature, Best Director and honorable mentions. Tickets are now on sale for all films at both the Museum of the Moving Image and the Zukor Theatre, as well as the festival’s website, queensworldfilmfestival.com.

GIVING BACK

Precincts across northern Queens host inaugural prom dress and suit drive BY JENNA BAGCAL @JENNA_BAGCAL

Police officers in northern Queens are helping high school seniors look their best for prom this spring. For the next few months, eight NYPD precincts in Patrol Borough Queens North (PBQN) are accepting gently used formal dresses, suits, belts and shoes to be donated to local high school students. Assistant Chief Martin Morales, the new head of PBQN, organized the dona-

tion drive in northern Queens and NYPD Queens South is running a similar event for local students. Organizers confirmed that there is not a set end date for donations but have set a tentative date for late April. Dresses, suits and accessories will be distributed to students at a to-be-announced event at a local high school. Donors can drop off their items any time to Youth Officers at the following western Queens locations: • 108th Precinct: 547 50th Ave., Long Island City

• 110th Precinct: 94-41 43rd Ave., Corona • 114th Precinct: 34-16 Astoria Blvd S., Astoria • 115th Precinct: 92-15 Northern Blvd., Jackson Heights Precincts located in Ridgewood, Flushing, Bayside and Forest Hills are also accepting donations. Those who cannot make it to the precincts but still wish to make a donation can call to arrange a pickup. For more information on the drive or to schedule a pickup, call Sergeant Colvin or PO Nugent at 718-520-8612. MARCH 2019 I BOROMAG.COM

FOOD + DRINK

The Royal Treatment BY DANIEL GROGAN

The first thing that struck me when I walked into The Royal Underground was the large mural on the far wall of the restaurant. A monochrome Brigitte Bardot-like figure wearing a CBGB shirt sits on a messy bed, smoking a cigarette and staring out the window of her New York City apartment. The painting, done by local artist Mario Saviñon (who also happens to be a bartender at The Royal Underground) is strikingly alluring and provides a smoky romance to the restaurant. Add in the eatery’s plush seating, dim lighting, elegant but accessible menu and diverse whiskey selection, and it’s the perfect spot for a date night or solo session of pensive bourbon drinking.

L

ocated at 36-10 30th Ave. in Astoria, The Royal Underground opened just after Thanksgiving 2018 in the old William Hallet location, and the owners said that the neighborhood has been welcoming. “The response has been very humbling and kind,” said Craig Davis, one of the restaurant’s owners. “As owners, you sit for months on end, literally in the dark, wondering if what you have in mind will resonate with people. It has been truly gratifying to see people smiling on the way out, and to read some of the reviews that guests have taken time to publish online.”

38

MARCH 2019

Alongside Davis is a team of talented and enthusiastic individuals. “The creative force behind the restaurant is chef Gary Anza,” Davis said. “Gary is a Michelin-rated chef with a French culinary background. Working with Gary are retired FDNY force of nature Jimmy Georgilis and kitchen wild thing Luan Giang.” From the beginning, the team hoped to provide an experience that Astorians didn’t realize they were missing: exotic dishes in a unique environment. “Like any restaurant, the concepts grew out of a long series of discussions about what we wanted to be, and what we thought the neighborhood would enjoy,” Davis said. “The whiskey bar concept was

baked in from early on, but we wanted to begin to steer out of the comfort food dynamic that has become ubiquitous in Astoria. We still have elements of some comfort staples of course, but we felt like we wanted to scratch an itch Astoria didn't know it had. If we are lucky enough to have a long, healthy run, we'd like to explore even more eccentricities in our menus going forward.”

The menu, carefully curated by chef Anza, could be described as “fusion,” though the gang is not too keen on this word. “While we aren't huge fans of the term, you could make a case that we fit in the ‘fusion’ category,” Davis said. “Gary is French culinary trained and has done tours of duty at prestigious locations like Bond Street. As a result, our fare has both

Though they are all winners, there have been some favorites among the clientele. “On the food side, the marinated New Zealand lamb chops have been a big hit for us, as well as the braised duck with tart cherry demi-glace,” Davis said. “Drinks like our mescal bad-boy The Atomic Punk,

It is a passport-style club, offering incentives to make your way through our almost 200 bottle collection of whiskeys,” Davis explained. “We will give incentives on

TIDYING

TOGETHER W BY ESTELLE PYPER @ESTIE_PYPER @ESTIEPYPER

alking into the Moores’ home, there is an instant sense of calm — a feeling hard to come by in NYC apartments, let alone one with toddlers in it. The Moores have adopted Marie Kondo-inspired tidying techniques and a “spark joy” mantra, and

their system works wonders for their little family in a railroad-style apartment in Astoria. But it didn’t happen overnight. Tyler and Emily Moore are originally from Kentucky and moved to Astoria eight years ago while Tyler got his master's degree at Columbia. He now teaches at a local school and Emily works as an oc-

They’ve lived in their current apartment on 44th Street for four years now. “In many ways we’ve had to look at our apartment as this living, breathing entity that needs to be changed given the needs that we have,” Tyler said. “So over the four years, we’ve had to modify and adapt our space quite a bit.” They’ve added two humans since they first moved in, so there was some adjusting to do. Their apartment is “railroad style,” meaning the rooms are all connected to each other as if they were passenger cars on a train. When Matilda was born, what was their master bed-

room became the nursery to fit both girls, and the parents moved in to the smaller room. “Tidying really took on a life of itself after I was inspired to flip rooms,” Tyler said. “The process of thinking about how to tidy our things has become really important, and thinking about how we have to tidy now may be different to how we tidy a year from now.” They began following Marie Kondo’s method of tidying from her book, “The LifeChanging Magic of Tidying Up,” and now they’re inspiring others to do the same. In January, about a year after the Moores embarked on their own tidying journey, Tyler started his “Tidy Dad” Instagram account (@tidydad).

“On the surface, not a ton changed, but people would walk in and say, ‘The space feels different,’” Tyler remembered. “They started asking for tips and strategies, and that’s when I started the Instagram page, which then inspired this community to reach out to me.” Tyler now works with clients and families who need inspiration organizing their space — especially if they have kids. “What our tidying philosophy is about is managing your stuff in such a way that your life is enhanced,” Tyler explained. “The reality is, stuff is ever-changing and the kids are ever-growing. How do you develop systems with your stuff that allows your daily living to either be more productive, or more efficient, or just more filled with joy?”

1. Trim the fat The Moores do this in a number of ways. Tyler shared with me three of his biggest “tidying tips” for families, taking me through examples in his own home. But before anything, his foundation of tidying is that everything has a “home.” “When everything has a place, everyone’s able to find everything, and everyone’s able to put it back,” Tyler said. “Which is different from cleaning, which is removing the dirt.” With that in mind, here are Tyler’s tidying tips:

48

MARCH 2019

Aka trimming excess. The Moores started by following Marie Kondo’s sorting steps: clothing, papers, books, komono (everything else) and sentimental items — getting rid of what they didn’t need and keeping only items that were necessary or that brought joy into their home. When they flipped rooms with the girls, Emily and Tyler were left with smaller closet space. Emily took the larger closet, and Tyler took the small, 20-inch-wide side closet, successfully trimming and folding all his clothing down to fit in 20 inches. “It’s thinking about the amount that each person has,” Tyler said. “You have to man-

age the flow of stuff in, the flow of stuff out, and what stays.” This principle helps them maintain their tidy space. In their bathroom, each family member gets a bin underneath the sink of toiletries, and the same rule applies: if you bring something in, something goes out. (Same with their shoe rack.) “With children, it’s this constant influx of new things between changing sizes or interests with toys,” Tyler explained, “so we have to think strategically.”

2. Go vertical (and low!) Going vertical has two purposes for the Moores. One, it’s a design trick for small spaces to give you as much real estate as

possible, and two, it keeps things out of the kids’ reach, such as fragile kitchen items. But at the same time, they’ve kept items low to the ground that they want their kids to have access to so they can contribute to the tidying process as a family. Their kitchen is divided into stations: prep, cooking, eating and storing. Then the lowest drawers have plastic kitchenware that the girls can access. Likewise, their coat rack near the front door has two low hooks for Mabel and Matilda’s jackets. “Them being able to put their things away is so important and instilling in them how we tidy as a family,” Tyler said. “These are the hidden things that do spark joy.”

The painting above Tyler and Emily Moore’s bed was created by their daughters Mabel and Matilda. This is especially palpable in their playroom, which sits in between the main living room and Emily and Tyler’s bedroom. The girls know where everything’s “home” is, and they are eager to tidy when playtime is over.

3. Make it affordable “What I hope separates Tidy Dad from other tidying people on Instagram is that I’m trying to make it economic,” Tyler said. “I want people to see that tidying is within their reach — that you don’t have to go out and buy a bunch of fancy bins.” The Moores do this by making use of the little things: cutting down Amazon boxes to use as storage bins, refurbishing street finds, or sprucing up Ikea items by adding paint. “The other thing is, I want to help other dads feel empowered in the tidying process,” Tyler said.

The Moores hang photos in their closets: a “spark joy” technique.

By working through Marie Kondo’s method of tidying, the Moores have been able to find joy in their home and even outside of it. “[Marie Kondo] says as you hone your decision-making process [while tidying], it actually heightens your decision-making process in all aspects of your life,” Tyler explained. It happened for him when he realized he wanted to go back to teaching from being a dean. “That’s what our tidying philosophy is about: managing your stuff in such a way that your life is enhanced,” he said. “I think I read this somewhere: ‘Home is where you live, not store stuff.’” MARCH 2019 I BOROMAG.COM
